Herethis paper is review on monographical pulication „Filozofia słowa. Zarys dziejów” [The Philosophy of the Word. A Short History] by Bolesław Andrzejewski. The Polish philosopher’s book is one and only publication which dares to present and contrast concepts and theories on the word which appears in the history of Western Civilisation from the times of ancient Greek philosophers, through Christian thinkers and German romantics and representants of Enlightenment, ending with English and American pragmatists and positivists, not to omit prominent linguists like Ferdynand de Saussure, Noam Chomsky, Ernst Cassirer or Wilhelm von Humboldt. Original view of the author on philosophy of language makes the reviewed book unique, since Andrzejewski tries to break through the analytic, so common nowadays, paradigm and proposes to run the consideration concerning language in the spirit of lingua ac communitas, so to speak, he treats language basically as a tool for interpersonal communication and a way of gaining understanding within community.

The text presents the project of multimedial, contemporary verbal environment research which uses a category of speech genres (Bakhtin). Focusing on the secondary genres (genres of verbal creativity) it justifies the argument that „The world is not dead. It’s merely changing it’s skin” (Dick Higgins), and therefore in the living verbal environment we deal with changing, heterogeneous media of verbal expression that determine, in part, ways of being and describing genres. This paper presents performance, text and hypertext as a basic means of existence of the verbal forms in contemporary culture; means which demand an adequate category of description and research tools in order to avoid textualization of multimedial genres and not to treat them like a literature.

In this article we find lexicographical reflections on the German (and Polish) dictionaries primarily in the context of the amount and structure of the contained therein lexemes. The author weaves considerations about the type of dictionary entries and how they can be lemmatised, eg. putting in dictionaries often only parts of compound words (eg. Affen-, Hunde-, -frei, -hungrig) to productively contribute to the development of vocabulary (eg. Affenschnell, Hundehitze, sozialversicherungsfrei, sexhungrig). The article also touched upon the issue of online dictionaries (digitized) and the increasingly important issue of foreign words, particularly English. The object of the considerations are mainly the Duden dictionaries, and also Wordbooks from Adelung, Klappenbach / Steinitz, Doroszewski, Zgółkowa, Żmigrodzki et al.

The present paper focuses on the linguistic image of the Oriental world depicted in the essay–afterword to the book of short stories Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement [Women of Algiers] by Assia Djebar. Entitled after the famous painting by Eugène Delacroix the book’s aim is to show the history of Algeria and of Algerian women since the short visit paid to the country by the French painter up to 1980s.The author of this paper wants to focus on the language Assia Djebar uses in her text. Thanks to the recurrence of some keywords she manages to render in her text the typical way of describing the Oriental world in 19th century (the Romantic fascination for Oriental lands and customs) and afterwards the seclusion and submission of Algerian women resulting from patriarchal tradition.However, it seems that Assia Djebar uses her language as a cubist painter (by the way, she refers in her essay to the painting Women of Algiers by Picasso), she deconstructs the linguistic reality to create a new world for Oriental women where, at least linguistically, seclusion changes into final liberation.

Opis:
The article covers the antithesis of positive and negative knowledge and its projection on the field of language. By the example of the Sermon on the Mount, the thesis of non-discursive nature of word and its contrasting to speech is affirmed. In connection with the antithesis under consideration, such questions of phenomenology are addressed as embodiment of meaning in a word, essential irrelevance of existing institutions and instances of the language. Distinction is made between authentic appeal and institutional methods of identification presented in nominal discourse.

This article is devoted to the apothegm understood as a literary genre. The aim of the article is to present the etymology of the very word as well as gather and organize the distinctive features of the genre by referring to the Greek, Roman and early modern tradition in order to highlight those aspects that indicate its evolution. What is more, the article also points out the differences between the apothegm and other cognate genres, such as proverbs, maxims, gnomes, dicta, anecdotes and aphorisms. The apothegm is presented as an exceptional genre since, by emphasizing the conciseness and wit of “speech activities”, it enhances sensitivity to current circumstances. Aptly, the apothegm strengthens a singular, wittily articulated and highly individual verbal reaction to a situation that occurred at an exceptional moment. The article especially points to the philosophical aspect of the apothegm, that is, its anthropological dimension. The apothegm is the form of the word, capable of expressing all intricacies of human nature, becoming an equivalent to history or biography. Thus approaching apothegm, that is, as a literary genre, allows it to be considered as an adequate reflection of one’s personality, combining the constant with the singular and the changeable in human nature. Therefore, the genre borders on rhetoric, history, biography and philosophy.

So-called “codes” were intended to be tools regulating social positions but they do not meet general expectations in the current form. They contain lots of semantic and construction defects, and they are, above all, strongly relativised. It gives their commentators plenty of possibilities to manipulate the regulations existing in codes in a decidedly arbitrary way. The formal parts of the code do not display their subjective character, which negatively impinges on their social reception itself. The future editing of codes has to go in the direction of “homo-hominis”, but not in their excessive formalisation. The herewith draft has made up only modest illustration of a considerably wider phenomenon culturally called “an excessive formalisation of social life, simultaneously with tendentiousness of its reception”.

The article attempts to present the impact of the co-existence of the Slavic and Germanic world on the formation of Slavic loanwords in German. The study focuses chiefly on the Russian loanwords in German. It presents and describes cultural, historical, political, and economic reasons for the transfer of the lexical elements of Russian origin to German. The aforementioned factors include: the impact of the hanseatic trade, political alliances, and conflicts. The work refers to loanwords of Russian origin that entered German throughout the ages. The article provides examples of words that describe typical Russian phenomena (e.g. Tundra), which counterparts had not existed in German before.

L2 learners may try to pick up the unknown word’s meaning from a dictionary. Many different factors, such as how important the meaning of the word is in the passage, the number of unknown words, and the reason the students are working on it, etc., affect the frequency of the student’s use of the dictionary for help. However, trying to guess the meaning of the unknown word from the context before consulting a dictionary is more beneficial since this may help the learners to pick the correct meaning relevant to the text. Using a dictionary should be limited to those unguessable words whose meanings can hinder the learner’s understanding.

This scientific contribution on human cognition and knowledge, which, among other things, is ma- nifested in the social sphere of communication, intends to clarify not only the importance of mystery but also the phenomenon of the human being and its limited capacity. The presented study aims to draw the attention of readers who specialize mainly in applied, specialized cognitive psychology to elementary processes that allow information to be captured, registered, evaluated and subsequently transmitted in the world of the media. All of this thanks to the diverse variability manifested in hu- man perception (psychological experiences, events, perceptions,...); visualization capacity (memory, fantasy...); imagination (reconstructive, creative, hallucinations...) and especially thinking, the basic process of intellectual understanding.

An article entitled Words Mean. Words Look. Words Sell (Themselves) focuses on three issues: dominance of the use of English loanwords over attempts to create their Polish equivalents (as a result of which a product, a process, an event, or an artefact promoted by the English-speaking culture is adopted together with its name), a trend whereby words (and titles composed of words) become images (through a choice of font, a non-standard use of lowercase and uppercase letters, or an inclusion of non-letter characters, e.g. parentheses), and ascribing to words present in micro-acts a promotional function, advertising the entire product – a text. The trends discussed in the article are not new, but it is their intensity level that is new.

This article presents German loanwords in the Polish language. Its aim is twofold: to discuss words of German origin in Polish, as well as to stress Polish-German language contacts and their influences on vocabulary (a significant number of German loanwords refer to the building industry). The analysis will not only deal with the meaning and etymology of particular words, but will also scrutinize their description in the dictionaries of Polish edited by Doroszewski and Sobol.

At the present stage of technological development of websites, critical difference between the word and the image breaks down. It means we are not able to distinguish them from one another at the operational level (at the program level). Furthermore, in view of the presentation of the website, building process of the visual composition of the website is carried out neither according to the function of words (narrative), nor according to analog image (representation), but by the surface distribution of the data. Website becomes infographics, which abstract a fundamental system of lines and shapes from reality and transforms them into a basic form of rectangles (diagrams, graphs, tables, forms).
