Opis:
Numerical simulation experiments with a high-resolution circulation model were carried out to study nutrient transport from different depths to the surface 10-m layer during an upwelling event along the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland in July 1999. The initial nutrient distribution is based on field measurements performed in the north-western part of the Gulf. Wind forcing covering the period of the upwelling along the northern coast was turned through 180◦ to simulate an upwelling along the southern coast. The simulation results showed that the main phosphorus transport to the upper 10-m layer occurred from depths shallower than 30 m for the upwelling events along both the northern and the southern coasts. Nitrogen transport to the upper 10-m layer was the largest from depths of 40–55 m for the upwelling along the northern and 40–65 m for the upwelling along the southern coast. Simulated cumulative volume transports to the upper 10-m layer from different depths showed that the contribution from deeper layers was larger in the case of the upwelling along the southern coast. The reduction of wind stress had a bigger influence on water transport from the deeper layers.

Opis:
The paper presents results of a study of near-bottom currents, lithology and morphodynamics on the shore-zone of the Vistula Spit in Russia and on the western shore of the Sambian Peninsula. The measurements were conducted in 1991 and during the period of 2005-2009. The study involves the analysis of the synchronous and statistical parameters of the currents together with wind, grain-size and sorting coefficient distributions for the deposits of the beach and underwater slope, and also the analysis of the morphology and morphodynamics along the east coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It has been shown that under conditions of an acute angle between the seaward wind vector and the coastline the strongest and the most stable longshore currents are formed. An increase of the angle leads to a decrease of velocity and stability of these currents. Under conditions of the wind normal to the shore (90°) in the sector of the curved coast Yantarny - Baltiysk (west wind), convergence of the currents is observed. The assessments of annual capacities of the longshore sediment transport for the coastal segment at the Sambian Peninsula and the deformation volumes on the underwater slope at Baltiysk are summarized. A hypothesis is proposed that the sector of 5-15 km north of Baltiysk under the existing wind-wave conditions is the zone of convergence and the discharge-resulting sediment transport. The assumption of the prevalence of migratory and whirl circulations along the shore zone of Vistula Spit is put forward. It is noticed that entrance moles of Baltiysk considerably impact on parameters of the currents and flow of deposits along the coastline at the length of 3-4 km.

Opis:
A plethora of physical parameters, such as hydro-, litho- and morpho-dynamic char- acteristics, are essential for understanding the response of coastal systems to intense sea states in terms of sediment transport and shoreline evolution. Nowadays, numerical models are extensively applied to meet the above needs and support coastal planning and management. In the present work, a 2DH dynamic modelling system is used for simulating the hydrodynamic and meteorological/ oceanographic characteristics of the Saronic Gulf, in order to examine circulation patterns and predict sediment transport phenomena under high wave conditions at the coast of Varkiza, a sandy beach in the southern Attica, Greece. Time series of wind and wave data were used as input at the open boundaries of the model domain while the model was calibrated and validated through (linear and directional) statistical measures with respect to in situ wave measurements, since there was lack of hydrodynamic data at the site of interest. The simulation period of the model was between January 3 and February 19, 2013, with consecutive high waves in-between. The good agreement of the numerical results from the wave and hydrodynamic model with in situ measurements confirmed the suitability of the model for the support of sediment transport rates at Varkiza coastal segment. Model results reveal that there is a counter-clockwise water circulation during high waves that contribute to the erosion of the examined beach, which is also confirmed by independent field measurements.

Opis:
Głównym źródłem NOₓ (NO i NO₂) jest działalność człowieka (energetyka, transport), a w mniejszym stopniu procesy naturalne. Tlenek azotu powstaje w wysokich temperaturach, głównie w procesach spalania paliw. W atmosferze ulega on utlenianiu ozonem lub tlenem atmosferycznym do ditlenku azotu, a następnie do azotanów. Badania wykonano w okresie od 10.02. do 31.12.2005 r. wykorzystując stację monitoringu imisji zanieczyszczeń powietrza w Kortowie. Ciągły pomiar stężenia NO i NO₂ wykonywano analizatorem chemiluminescencyjnym MLU 200E (API-Teledyne, Inc. USA; dolny próg wykrywalności 0,4 ppb), a parametrów meteorologicznych zestawem firmy Laboratori di Strumentazione Industriale s.p.a. (Włochy). Największe stężenia NO₂ (rzędu 12 µg·m⁻³) w miesiącach zimowych notowano w przypadku wiatrów wiejących z kierunku lokalizacji niskiej emisji (kilka osiedli z paleniskami domowymi), natomiast w miesiącach letnich (6-7 µg·m⁻³) z centrum Olsztyna i najbliższej ulicy o znacznym ruchu samochodowym. Odmiennie kształtował się poziom NO w zależności od kierunku wiatru. W okresie zimowym nieutleniony jeszcze NO napływał z kierunku pobliskiej arterii komunikacyjnej oraz najbliższego osiedla domów jednorodzinnych. Z kolei latem prawie wyłącznie ze źródeł komunikacyjnych.
The main source of NOₓ (NO i NO₂) is human activity (power engineering, transport). Natural processes play a much less important role. Nitrig oxide is produced at high temperatures, mainly during fuel combustion. In the atmosphere it is oxidized with ozone or atmospheric oxygen to nitrogen dioxide, and next to nitrates. The experiment was conducted over a period from February 10 to December 31, 2005, using data provided by the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station in Kortowo. Continuous measurement of the concentrations of NO and NO₂ was performed with a chemiluminescent analyzer MLU 200E (API-Teledyne, Inc. USA; lower detectable limit 0.4 ppb). Meteorological parameters were determined using a system manufactured by LSI s.p.a. (Italy). In the winter months the highest NO₂ concentration (approximately 12 µg·m⁻³) was recorded when the wind was blowing from the direction of a low emission location (several housing estates with domestic furnaces), whereas in the summer months (6-7 µg·m⁻³) - when the wind was blowing from the city center and the nearest street characterized by a high traffic density. The relationship between the NO level and the wind direction differed. In winter non-oxidized NO came from the nearby traffic artery and an estate of detached houses, while in summer - almost entirely from traffic pollutant sources.
