The paper presents the studies of metal wettability using two methods: the sessile droplet and immersion ones. Based on the measured contact angles, there was calculated apparent surface free energy from the acidic–basic approach and the contact angle hysteresis. The advancing contact angles measured using the immersion method exhibit a little higher values than those measured by the sessile droplet method. The application of the immersion method leads to obtaining higher contact angle hysteresis. Both methods give different values of contact angles but they can be applied independently for estimation of metal surface wettability.

The article describes the studies which have been conducted on the dynamic wetting of quartz grains by EPIDIAN 5 resin and by this resin with an addition of 5 wt. %, 20 wt. % and 30 wt. % of xylene at different temperatures. In the case of the investigated resin, the wetting process dynamics is best described by a logarithmic function: theta = A Int + B0, where: theta is the contact angle after time t, and A and B0 are constants characteristic of this process at a given temperature. It has been proved that with 5 wt. % addition of xylene both constants assume a value different than zero. With addition of 20 wt. % and 30 wt. % of xylene, the State of equilibrium is reached almost immediately, and it is expressed by a zero value of constant A. The infrared spectroscopy did not reveal the presence of any chemical reactions between the EPIDIAN 5 resin and xylene, thus confirming that the chemical structure of xylene molecule affects the type of interaction and proves the non-active behaviour of xylene as a diluent. The importance of the studies for foundry sand practice has been stressed.
W artykule przedstawiono badania dynamiki zwilżania kwarcu przez żywicę EPIDIAN 5 z dodatkiem 5% wag., 20% wag. i 30% wag. ksylenu w różnych temperaturach. Dla przebadanej żywicy, proces dynamiki zwilżania najlepiej opisuje funkcja logarytmiczna: theta = - A Int + B0, gdzie: theta jest kątem zwilżania po czasie t, zaś A i B0 stałymi charakteryzującymi proces w danej temperaturze. Wykazano, że wartość obydwu stałych przy dodatku 5% wag. ksylenu jest różna od zera. Przy dodatku 20% wag. i 30% wag. uzyskuje się praktycznie natychmiastowy stan równowagi, któremu odpowiada zerowa wartość stałej A. Badania spektroskopowe w podczerwieni nie wykazały reakcji chemicznej pomiędzy żywicą EPIDIAN 5 a ksylenem, potwierdzając tym samym wpływ struktury chemicznej cząsteczki ksylenu na rodzaj oddziaływań i jego nieaktywny charakter jako rozcieńczalnika. Podkreślono wpływ przeprowadzonych badań dla praktyki mas formierskich.

Spreading of water droplet on sphalerite surface was quantified at molecular level and was utilized for comparison of the wetting properties of sphalerite protonated and hydroxylated surfaces. Molecular dynamic simulations were used to characterize the wetting of sphalerite (110) plane. Experimental contact angles of water droplet on sphalerite surfaces were measured and the results were compared with simulated contact angles to ensure that the simulations are accurate enough for calculation of spreading factors. Shape descriptors such as perimeter, area, Feret’s diameters and circularity were used to characterize the shape of droplet-sphalerite interface at molecular level. Using the shape descriptors, different spreading factors were defined and calculated spreading factors were correlated with simulated contact angle. It was shown that spreading factors which were defined as the volume of water droplet divided by the area and Feret’s diameters, with correlation coefficient of 0.98 and 0.97, can be used as accurate tools for wetting comparison of functionalized sphalerite surface at molecular scale. Proposed approach also can be used for investigations on the effect of surface chemical and physical anisotropies on preferred wetting in specific direction at molecular scales.

Understanding the mechanism by which oil is displaced from the porous medium requires knowledge about the role of wetting and capillary forces during EOR. Knowledge of the effect of wettability on oil production is also a key point for understanding the behavior of multiphase flows in the reservoir. A literature review indicates that wettability is one of the ma in factors controlling and regulating the distribution of oil and water in the reservoir rock. Therefore, the resolution of problems associated with the calculation of oil resources, operation and analysis of core deposits, must take into account the wettability of rock. Therefore, the study of such phenomena as wettability is still valid today. In the paper reservoir rock wettability and its types were desc ribed. Direct and indirect methods of determining the wettability were characterized, the graph of capillary pressure is used to characterize the wettability. In order to determine the effect of wettability on multiphase flow in porous media are discussed petrophysical parameters: capillary pressure, relative permeability and hydrocarbon saturation of the rock. Shales have become one of the main unconventional gas resources in the world. However, physicochemical properties of rocks are still at the center of research. There have been conducted major researches in wettability of shales by fluids and advances in understanding and control of shale rock wettability. Also influence of interfacial phenomena on a production capacity of reservoirs have been made. The aim of this study is to find a relationship between type of fracturing fluid used during shale gas recovery and shale rock wettability. The study is the first step to evaluate conditions, under which wetting occurs most intensely, how it can be controlled by changing a composition of fracturing fluid and how this composition effects the wetting mechanism. We present a characterization of porous materials by a capillary rise method to study shale wettability by water, oil and other fluids. This work describes the experimental contributions to understand the shale rock/fluid interactions through inquire of fluid role in wettability of shale rock.

The paper focuses on assessing wettability of surfaces modified with ionic liquid solutions. Dialkylimidazolium chlorides have been selected as the test group, because of their immediate availabil-ity and limited previous research. Contact angle of selected ionic liquid solutions have been measured with two methods: capillary rise test and simplified sitting droplet analysis, performed by means of digital camera. During tests the extremely high viscosity of dialkylimidazolium chlorides has been observed to drop rapidly with prolonged exposition to atmospheric moisture and measured experimentally with Karl-Fischer titration and viscosity measurements. Contact angles of selected ionic liquids have been presented.

The measurements of the advancing contact angle of water, glycerol, formamide, ethylene glycol, diiodomethane, α-bromonaphthalene, 1,2,3-tribromopropane on unoxidized and oxidized galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, djurleite, bornite and covellite at the temperature equal 293 K were made. Additionally, the measurements of the force air bubble detachment from these sulfide minerals including also chalcocite in water were performed. Using the values of the obtained contact angle of water, glycerol, formamide, ethylene glycol, diiodomethane, α-bromonaphthalene, 1,2,3-tribromopropane the components and parameters of the unoxidized and oxidized sulfide minerals surface tension were calculated. For this calculation the van Oss et al. method was applied after analysis of the components and parameters of the surface tension of liquids used for contact angle measurements. Taking into account the contact angle of water on the sulfide minerals, the detachment force of air bubble from these minerals in water was determined using our equation and comparing to that of measured one. As follows from the measurements and calculations the wetting properties of sulfide minerals and the stability of mineral-air bubble depends to a larger extent on the degree of sulfide minerals oxidation than on the type of mineral.

Ionic liquids are widely used in supported ionic liquid membranes technology, especially in gas separation and purification processes. This work characterizes the ability of ionic liquids to wet commercially available porous supports used for such purposes. Characterization of supports and membrane phases was carried out in order to determine factors influencing wetting process. Experimental method based on capillary rise is widely used for porous media characterization (i.e. pore radius, contact angle). Measurements of penetration distance or liquid mass are two main experimental methods, in which the Washburn equation is a basic instrument to analyze the obtained results. However, polymeric porous supports do not meet Washburn assumptions and the method is loaded with human errors, so the sessile drop method was used. The rate of wetting influences swelling effects and therefore changes in permeation path during gas separation processes are observed. Influence of ionic liquids structure on wetting and swelling of porous supports was investigated. The families of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (Cnmim), ammonium (Nnnnn), 1-alkyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium (CnPyrr) and 1-alkylpyridinium (CnPy) compounds with variable alkyl chain lengths in cation structures and changeable anions were taken into account in wetting and swelling experiments.

The measurements of advancing contact angle of water, glycerol, formamide, ethylene glycol, diiodomethane, α-bromonaphthalene, 1,2,3-tribromopropane and aqueous solution of n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (OGP) on unoxidized and oxidized synthetic chalcocite at the temperatures equal to 293, 303 and 313 K were made. Using the obtained contact angle values of the pure liquids the components and parameters of the unoxidized and oxidized synthetic chalcocite surface tension were calculated. For this calculation, different methods based on the Young equation were applied. It follows that the surface tension of both forms of chalcocite does not practically depend on the temperature in the range from 293 to 313 K. Taking into account the calculated values of components and parameters of unoxidized and oxidized chalcocite surface tension their wettability by the aqueous solution of n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside was considered. It appeared that wettability of the unoxidized chalcocite by aqueous solution of OGP can be predicted on the basis of the chalcocite surface tension components and parameters.

In this study, multiscale advancing contact angles for glycerol/water drops at silica surfaces are reported for millidrops, submicron-drops, and nanodrops. Selected silica surfaces were muscovite, silicon, and talc. The contact angles for millidrops (1–2 mm) were determined by the traditional sessile drop technique. For submicron-drops (0.1–1.0 μm), a hollow tip Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) procedure was used. The contact angles for nanodrops (~7 nm) were examined from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. The results were compared to evaluate the effect of drop size on the contact angle. In the case of the hydrophobic talc surface, the 75° advancing contact angle did not vary significantly with drop size. For the hydrophilic muscovite surface, the water drop wet the surface and an advancing contact angle of about 10° was found for the millidrops and submicron-drops. However, for the MD simulated nanodrops, attachment and spreading of the ~7 nm drop created a 2D film of molecular dimensions, the contact angle of which was difficult to define and varied from 0° to 17°. Perhaps of equal interest from the MD simulation results was that the spreading of the glycerol/water nanodrop at the muscovite surface resulted in crystallographic directional transport of water molecules to the extremities of the 2D film. Such separation and segregation left the center of the film with an increased concentration of glycerol. Based on these results, the line tension, which has been found in other investigations to account for contact angle decrease with a decrease in drop size, does not seem to be a significant factor in this study.

Wettability in the silver/carbon system was examined by the sessile drop method under vacuum at the temperature of 1243 K. Vitreous carbon, diamond and graphite were used as solid substrates. after wettability tests, the solidified Ag/C and Ag-X/C (X - 1 wt.% Ti or Zr) couples were subjected to structural characterization by SEM and EDX analysis. liquid pure silver does not wet these substrates and shows week adhesion, regardless of the type of the carbon material used. the introduction of 1 wt.% carbide forming additions Ti or Zr into silver changes dramatically the interaction in the Ag/C system leading to the formation of continuous reaction product layers (TiCx and ZrCx, respectively) at the drop/substrate interface. these interfacial layers are responsible for good wetting and high work of adhesion between agti1 and AgZr1 alloys and all types of carbon materials examined in this study.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań zwilżalności w układzie srebro/węgiel wykonanych w atmosferze próżni, w temperaturze 1243 K. Pomiary kąta zwilżania wykonano metodą leżącej kropli na podłożach z węgla szklistego, diamentu i grafitu. Po testach zwilżalności wytworzone pary materiałów Ag/C i Ag-X/C (X - 1% wag. Ti lub Zr) poddano analizie strukturalnej metodami SEM i EDX. Ag/C jest układem niereaktywnym, w którym srebro nie zwilża węgla. Prezentowane badania wykazują, że dodatek 1% wag. Ti lub Zr do srebra powoduje obniżenie kątów zwilżania i wzrost wartości pracy adhezji w układzie Ag/C niezależnie od typu materiału węglowego. Jest to związane z powstawaniem na granicy kontaktu kropli z podłożem węglowym warstw przejściowych zawierających węgliki TiCx lub ZrCx.

Controlling the bubble size is a major concern in enhancing transport performance in gas-liquid systems. The role of wettability of diffuser surface on bubble size is the subject of the current work. The study inspects the contact angle of a set of liquids on HP ceramic diffusers using the Washburn method. The results demonstrate that organic liquids like toluene, methanol–water (1:1 v/v), ethanol– water (1:1 v/v) and decane have small contact angles of 12.9, 37.5, 24.4 and 22.5 respectively. Water has a lower wettability than the organic compounds where the contact angle was about 67.4. The effect of wettability of the bubble size is investigated by measuring the size of air bubble produced using the same diffuser material. The results of bubble size measurement demonstrates that with liquids of small contact angle, i.e. good wetting properties, small bubble sizes are produced in comparison with liquids with a higher contact angle. The study demonstrates the viability of Washburn method in characterization of wettability of porous diffuser, which was verified by measuring the bubble size produced. A high reduction in bubble size can be obtained by a carefully chosen diffuser material that provides better wettability.

The aim of the research was to measure the wettability of wood surface protected with three ionic liquids differing in terms of cation and anion structure as well as fungicidal properties. Herbicidal ionic liquids with functional anion, nitrate(V) with cation derived from natural coconut oil and ionic liquid with dodecylbenzenesulfonate anion were tested. The investigation was carried out on pine wood Pinus sylvestris L. The presented results indicate that the ionic liquids containing 12-carbon hydrophobic alkyl chain in their structure, i.e. [DDA][ABS] and [ArqC35][NO3], worsened wood wettability, thus improved the protection of wood against water.
Przedstawiono badania zwilżalności drewna zabezpieczonego powierzchniowo trzema cieczami jonowymi, o zróżnicowanej strukturze zarówno kationu, jak i anionu oraz skuteczności działania grzybobójczego. Zbadano „herbicydowe ciecze jonowe” z funkcyjnym anionem, azotan(V) z kationem pochodzenia naturalnego z oleju kokosowego oraz ciecz jonową z anionem dodecylobenzosulfonowym. Badania wykonano na drewnie sosny Pinus sylvestris L. Wykazano, iż ciecze jonowe zawierające w strukturze 12-weglowy, hydrofobowy łańcuch alkilowy [DDA][ABS] oraz [ArqC35][NO3], wprowadzone do drewna wpływają na pogorszenie jego zwilżalności, a tym samym na zwiększenie jego odporności na działanie wody.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono sposób wytwarzania, właściwości i zastosowanie powłok hydrofobowych na bazie krzemionki. Warstwy te wytwarza się wykorzystując niereagujące z wodą silany. Co więcej powłoki te mogą zapewnić nie tylko dużą odporność na działanie cząsteczek wody, lecz także lepszą odporność na ścieranie i twardość oraz zachowują wysoki stopień przejrzystości. Do osadzenia tych powłok wykorzystuje się nieskomplikowane metody zol-żel. Są to metody nakładania na różne powierzchnie, bez konieczności stosowania specjalnych i wyszukanych rozwiązań technologicznych. Powłoki te nadają się jako przezroczyste i łatwe do utrzymania czystości powierzchnie dla wielu dziedzin zastosowań, w tym m. in. sporcie, motoryzacji, przemyśle budowlanym, optyce czy w naszych domach.
The method of conversion, properties and usage of hydrophobic coatings on the bases of silicon dioxide is presented in the article. These layers are formed by use the silanes which are not react with water. What is more, these layers could provide not only great resistance to the effect of water molecules, but also better resistance to the effect of abrasive action and hardness as well as keeping the top stair of the transparency. Uncomplicated methods such as zol-zel are used to settling these layers. There are methods of putting on the various surfaces, without necessity of usage specific and sophisticated technological solutions. As a transparent and simple to keep in the cleanness surfaces these layers found application in various field such as sport, motorization, building industry, optical system whether in our houses.

Opis:
Celem pracy było przeprowadzenie badań zwilżalności warstwy wierzchniej oraz oznaczenie swobodnej energii powierzchniowej dla wybranych typów materiałów stomatologicznych. W badaniach zrealizowanych w Zakładzie Mechaniki Doświadczalnej i Biomechaniki Politechniki Krakowskiej wykorzystano model Owens’a-Wendt’a, wymagający zastosowania dwóch cieczy (jednej polarniej, drugiej dyspersyjnej).
The aim of this study was to conduct studies of wettability of the surface layer and the surface free energy determination for selected types of dental materials. In a study carried out at the Department of Experimental Mechanics and Biomechanics, Technical University of Cracow model was used Owens-Wendt'a, requiring the use of two liquids (one polar, the other dispersion).
