Opis:
A recent study has shown increased warming in the fjords of west Spitsbergen. Their location is critical, as they are situated along the main northward pathway of Atlantic Water (AW) which is a great source of heat to the Arctic Ocean and the fjords. In the light of ongoing warming, we aim to discuss differences between the fjords under northward transformation of oceanic waters. We compared summer hydrographic conditions in two fjords located in two opposite ends of west Spistbergen: Hornsund in the south and Kongsfjorden in the north. The study is based on high resolution CTD measurements collected during Arctic cruises between 2001 and 2015. The emphasis was put not only on differences in water temperature, salinity and water masses but also the freshwater content (FWC), AW transport and heat delivery to the fjords. In general, the water in Kongsfjorden is on average 18C warmer and its salinity is higher by 0.5 compared to Hornsund. It is also characterized by two times greater transport of AW and heat delivery to the fjord. On the other hand, Hornsund reveals two times higher FWC. Both fjords undergo a gradual warming due to an increased presence of Atlantic origin waters. The ongoing warming is accompanied by an increase in variability of temperature and salinity dependent on the domination of the Sørkapp Current (SC) or the West Spitsbergen Current (WSC) on the West Spitsbergen Shelf (WSS). Nonetheless, Hornsund remains more Arctic-type fjord compared to Kongsfjorden, due to stronger blocking by SC.

Opis:
The Baltic is a stratified sea. The upper layer is under the influence of atmospheric and terrestial factors. The mechanisms of these external factors on the surficial and subsurface water layer are well recognised but the vertical exchange in the water body is still not sufficiently investigated. Field measurements at sea are time consuming and expensive. A model of the Baltic Sea distributed to and accessible by institutions investigating the Baltic Sea is advantageous because of easier exchange modelled data. The modelling, especially of the surface layer is important due to the fact that outside the coastal zone continuous measurements of physical parameters is difficult. The comparison between measured in situ and modelled data serves as a tool for the corrections to HIROMB resulting in better approximation of real phenomena occurring in the Baltic Sea. Temperature and salinity values obtained on board rlv Baltica during the POLRODEX'97 expetriment were compared with modelled values. The analysis showed significant differences between in situ measurements and obtained from the HIROMB model.

Since 1987 annual summer cruises to the Nordic Seas and Fram Strait have been conducted by the IO PAN research vessel Oceania under the long-term monitoring program AREX. Here we present a short description of measurements and preliminary results obtained during the open ocean part of the AREX 2016 cruise. Spatial distributions of Atlantic water temperature and salinity in 2016 are similar to their long-term mean fields except for warmer recirculation of Atlantic water in the northern Fram Strait. The longest observation record from the section N along 768300N reveals a steady increase of Atlantic water salinity, while temperature trend depends strongly on parametrization used to define the Atlantic water layer. However spatially averaged temperature at different depths indicate an increase of Atlantic water temperature in the whole layer from the surface down to 1000 m.

Opis:
A new dataset of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Adventfjorden (tributary fjord of Isfjorden, West Spitsbergen) was compared with the results of a study conducted by Zajączkowski et al. (2010) in Hornsund (West Spitsbergen). According to Nilsen et al. (2016), Atlantic water inflow to the Isfjorden Trough occurs more readily than to anywhere else along the shelf of Spitsbergen; thus, we compared the foraminiferal assemblages of the outwash Adventfjorden fjord, located in the Isfjorden system, with glacial Hornsund, located in southwest Spitsbergen. Despite the juxtaposition of Adventfjorden and Hornsund the data revealed varying impacts of shelf-transformed water (STW) on the benthic foraminiferal assemblages. Outer and central Adventfjorden was dominated by Adercotryma glomerata, Recurvoides turbinata and Spiroplectammina sp., reflecting the presence of STW, while abundant Melonis barleeanus in the central area of the fjord indicated a large flux of unaltered organic matter. Only the head of the fjord was dominated by the glaciomarine taxa Cassidulina reniforme and Elphidium clavatum. Foraminiferal fauna characteristic of STW-influenced environments (i.e., Nonionellina labradorica and R. turbinata) were also observed in outer Hornsund. However, the glacier-proximal taxa E. clavatum and C. reniforme were dominant throughout the fjord, demonstrating the impacts of meltwater and high sedimentation. Therefore, it is likely that in Hornsund, glacial impact is a major environmental factor, which is stronger than the influence of STW.

The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.

Opis:
High-latitude fjords, very vulnerable to global change, are impacted by their land and ocean boundaries, and they may be influenced by terrestrial water discharges and oceanic water inputs into them. This may be reflected by temporal and spatial patterns in concentrations of biogeochemically important constituents. This paper analyses information relating to the total suspended matter (TSM) concentration in the Porsanger fjord (Porsangerfjorden), which is situated in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea. Water samples and a set of physical data (water temperature, salinity, inherent optical properties) were obtained during two field expeditions in the spring and summer of 2014 and 2015. Bio-optical relationships were derived from these measurements, enabling optical data to be interpreted in terms of TSM concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability of TSM concentration, which was strongly influenced by precipitation, terrestrial water discharge and tidal phase. Spatial distribution of TSM concentration was related to the bathymetry of the fjord, dividing this basin into three subregions. TSM concentrations ranged from 0.72 to 0.132 g m−3 at the surface (0–2 m) and from 0.5 to 0.67 g m−3 at 40 m depth. The average mineral fraction was estimated to be 44% at surface and 53% at 40 m.

Opis:
Obszary wewnętrznych zatok fiordu Hornsund stanowią zróżnicowane i podlegające dynamicznym zmianom środowisko.
The Hornsund fjord is located in the southwest part of Spitsbergen. This part is situated in the area of dynamic changes because of two periodically upcoming flows of water, warm West Spitsbergen current and cold East Spitsbergen current. These currents are changeable by means of their specific activities due to variable flow of some waters to the fjord that occur seasonally as well as in many years time. The changeability of physico-chemical conditions of the fjord waters have been monitored for many years by terms of warm years as well as seasonally. Despite of thorough literature conveying the issue of physico-chemical conditions of Isbjornhamna's waters there is not sufficient pieces of information tackling with some conditions that are in numerous bays in the depth of Hornsund fjord. During the biological research in Hornsund concerning inner bays in July of 2000 and 2002 year the measurement of temperature, salinity and conductivity of bottom layers of water were made. The research included the following bays: Brepollen by the forehead of Horn glacier, Hyrne glacier, Mendelejew glacier, by the eastern side of Treskelen peninsula, Samarinvagen, Adriabukta, Austre Burgerbukta, Gashamna and Isbjornhamna. The conducted analysis were done for the water layers that lie 1 meter over the bottom. The research was being done was that moment of intensive flows of glacier waters. The measurement were repeated in 2002, moreover almost for the same positions. When the research was being conducted the Hornsund fjord was under the influence of warm waters on the surface by West Spitsbergen current, according the analysis of the data of surface waters taken by NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Centre. As a result of the analysis conducted some great variability of water temperature and salinity for some bays and profiles has been found. For the given positions almost similar values were found by means of two research series (2000 and 2002). The results show indicate to the variability of water layers lied in the given glacier bays. The rise of temperature of bottom waters both in Isbjornhamna and Brepollen that has been noticed during the period of 20-30 years indicates constant warming. The results of various research as well as the conclusions about the long-term lasting warming of the bottom waters available from literature can provide evidence that during the period of 20-30 years there is a change of intensity of West Spitsbergen current. Thus there is a significant change and conversion of water mass filled Hornsund.

Opis:
Under warming climates, heat waves (HWs) have occurred in increasing intensity in Europe. Also, public interest towards HWs has considerably increased over the last decades. The paper discusses the manifestations of the summer 2014 HW and simultaneously occurring coastal upwelling (CU) events in the Gulf of Finland. Caused by an anticyclonic weather pattern and persisting easterly winds, CUs evolved along the southern coast of the Gulf in four episodes from June to August. Based on data from coastal weather stations, 115 days-long measurements with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP) oceanographic complex and sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images, the partly opposing impacts of these events are analysed. Occurring on the background of a marine HW (up to 26°C), the CU-forced SST variations reached about 20 degrees. At the 10 m deep RDCP mooring location, a drop from 21.5 to 2.9°C occurred within 60 hours. Salinity varied between 3.6 and 6.2 and an alongshore coastal jet was observed; the statistically preferred westerly current frequently flowed against the wind. Locally, the cooling effect of the CUs occasionally mitigated the overheating effects by the HWs both in the sea and on the marine-land boundary. However, in the elongated channel-like Gulf of Finland, upwelling at one coast is usually paired with downwelling at the opposite coast, and simultaneously or subsequently occurring HWs and CUs effectively contribute to heat transfer from the atmosphere to the water mass. Rising extremes of HWs and rapid variations by CUs may put the ecosystems under increasing stress.
