Opis:
The presented research concerns 11-year-old Greek students’ mental representations of the mechanisms of vision in conditions of natural and artificial light, as well as the persistence of those representations in terms of the two different states of lighting and the expression form of the provided answers (oral speech; sketches). The study consisted of two phases: test interviews and an interview process, where personal interviews were conducted with 30 participants. The results showed that the 11-year-old pupils employed the majority of the vision schemes that are included in the international bibliography; however, they tended to use the Sea of Light mechanism and a new scheme the researchers called Illumination of the Object. The schemes employed, however, are not consistent, either throughout the different states of lighting, or in the 3-D and 2-D world.

Opis:
This article summarizes current knowledge on the genetics and possible molecular mechanisms of human pathologies resulted from mutations within the genes encoding several myosin isoforms. Mutations within the genes encoding some myosin isoforms have been found to be responsible for blindness (myosins III and VIIA), deafness (myosins I, IIA, IIIA, VI, VIIA and XV) and familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (β cardiac myosin heavy chain and both the regulatory and essential light chains). Myosin III localizes predominantly to photoreceptor cells and is proved to be engaged in the vision process in Drosophila. In the inner ear, myosin I is postulated to play a role as an adaptive motor in the tip links of stereocilia of hair cells, myosin IIA seems to be responsible for stabilizing the contacts between adjacent inner ear hair cells, myosin VI plays a role as an intracellular motor transporting membrane structures within the hair cells while myosin VIIA most probably participates in forming links between neighbouring stereocilia and myosin XV probably stabilizes the stereocilia structure. About 30% of patients with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have mutations within the genes encoding the β cardiac myosin heavy chain and both light chains that are grouped within the regions of myosin head crucial for its functions. The alterations lead to the destabilization of sarcomeres and to a decrease of the myosin ATPase activity and its ability to move actin filaments.

The experiment is aimed at investigating the factors that may modulate the costs of cross-modal visuo-haptic recognition of scenes. Participants learned a scene either visually or by touch (in the latter case they were blindfolded); then, following a delay, they identified the scene using the same or changed modality. The level of difficulty was adjusted by introducing two or three changes in the placement of scene elements at the recognition stage. It has been demonstrated that the costs of modality change, related to both decreased accuracy of recognition and extended time for making decision, occur only in a situation when a significant burden is imposed on working memory, i.e., with tactile learning of a scene and a high level of difficulty of the recognition task.

Opis:
For Primate Stefan Wyszyński, the past of the nation was an important element creating the identity of the nation, on whose behaviour its future depended. Maintaining the memory of the history of the nation, which, in the primate’s thought, was constituted when Mieszko I was baptised in 966, was one of the priorities of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński’s teaching. For this reason, it was also a part of the world-view dispute between the Primate and the communist authorities of postwar Poland, whose aim was to erase many pages of history from national memory or to give them a different meaning as a condition for creating a „new” society based on the Soviet model. In the evaluation of the past, falsified in the People’s Republic of Poland, the Primate used „his own domestic and national sense” and „proper evaluation of the spirit”. The theological perspective allowed the Primate to look at the painful and tragic pages of history, including the lost national uprisings, as a sacrifice modelled on the sacrifice of Christ, necessary for the resurrection of Poland. According to Primate Wyszyński, the history of the nation was a reservoir of values, co-shaped by faith and the Church, from which future generations could draw in the struggle to regain independence in 1918 and regain sovereignty.

The world of environmental engineering science is moving briskly and steadfastly in a newer vision and a newer age ahead in the civilisation’s progress. Global water shortage has become a primordial issue in present day human civilization. Environmental regulations and ecological restrictions has to be reassessed and rejudged at this critical juncture of history and time. In a similar vein the importance of membrane science and the applicability of environmental engineering techniques stands in the midst of immense optimism and scientific vision. Analytically, membrane separation science will bring environmental engineering science to the newer vision of zero discharge norms. Zero discharge norms and environmental engineering paradigm has an umbilical cord which has a decisive effect on ecological balance. The primordial and the decisive factor in global water shortage is the issue of ground water contamination and its subsequent remediation. Nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and other membrane separation processes in today’s scientific world and scientific vision stands in the midst of inimitable hope and optimism.

Environmental engineering is moving briskly and steadily from one challenging phase to another. The world of challenges are immense as well as far-reaching. Advanced oxidation processes today stands in the midst of immense scientific vision, scientific understanding and invincible scientific challenges. The effectivity of degradation quality of ozone and hydroxyl radicals is outstanding and path-breaking. Environmental concerns and subsequent environmental regulations are the burning issues of our present day civilization. Novel separation processes as well advanced oxidation techniques are the plausible solutions for zero-discharge norms and effective environmental engineering paradigm. The question of effective environmental engineering techniques comes into the horizon of a scientist’s mind. Amongst the advanced oxidation techniques, ozonation or ozone-oxidation stands today in the new millennium as the most effective environmental engineering techniques. Wastewater treatment and provision of clean drinking water are unquestionably the primordial issues of present day mankind and the ever-alert civil society. The visionary challenges are moving from one avenue of environmental disaster to another. Environmental disaster – both manmade as well as natural has plunged our civilization to unending catastrophe. These environmental calamities are harbingers of more immense and impending environmental disasters. The scientific paradigm and the scientific domain needs rethought and needs to be restructured. In the face of these immense environmental calamities, the thrust areas of novel separation processes and advanced oxidation needs immense retrospection. In such a critical juncture of history and time, this treatise effectively addresses the questions of zero-discharge norms with respect to new discoveries in the field of advanced oxidation processes particularly the field of ozonation.

The paper explores the issue of the application of selected theories of European inte-gration (intergovernmental and supranational) to explain the position of the Polish Justice Law and Justice party with regard to the functioning and future of the EU. The party, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is a political formation which is actively engaged in the debate on the shape of the EU, pertaining to both its theoretical and practical policies. The ongoing debate has taken the form of battle between neo-functionalism and state-centric intergovernmental approach. The author believes that the main theory that explains the Law and Justice party’s approach to European issues is inter-governmentalism which aligns well with the concept of “Europe of Motherlands” adopted by the party. It proclaims the primacy of nation state and its interests in the process of European integration. This is tantamount to refuting the view that the EU can develop only in accordance with the neo-functionalism’s spill-over logic which will eventually lead to the formation of a European federation.

Summary. Little is known about cognitive mediators of colour-flavour perception when they are atypically combined. We explored the possibility that cognitive style and sensory sensitivity may act as intermediaries and might explain interpersonal differences in making heuristic decision based on visual cues. 55 participants (M = 21.42; SD = 2.12) were ask to complete two questionnaires. Afterwards they were presented with three coloured samples of sweetened milk and asked to select perceived flavour. Almost all participants used visual cue in determining what flavour the beverage was at least in one sample. Neither reflection nor self-awareness did significantly relate to correct recognition of the flavour. Nevertheless negative significant association was found between sensory sensitivity and self-awareness (rho = -0.40; p < 0.01).The results also indicate that women more frequently made heuristic decisions. Findings confirm that the importance of visually acquired information exceeds that from other senses. The results indicate that people either focus on their inside or on the environment.

Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to present the validity of the investment of a production plant in the development of production automation. The optimal use of production lines is the way to achieve the right return on investment and profits. Any unplanned stops reduce profitability of production and do not allow to achieve high production output. The introduction of various types of safety devices and process automation allows to prevent unwanted events. In particular, relieving employees of their responsibility and thus avoiding breakdowns caused by operator error can lead to an effective increase in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).The publication presents a study of the impact of the use of a vision system on increasing the reliability of the production system. As a result, an effective vision system based on a 3D sensor has been developed, which protects the production line against collision of the robot's chuck plate with final products, thus not leading to the collision and destruction of the robot's tools. The camera has been implemented in the robot's control system, which excludes the need to change the settings, because the necessary change of work parameters is made automatically via the communication interface, thus making the work easier for employees when retooling the production machine between orders. Increasing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness and high level of Return Of Investment (ROI) allow for an unequivocal decision on the importance of the investment decision. The financial expense allowed for increasing the efficiency and productivity of production line, which contributes to the growth of the company's competitiveness. The predictability of lead time has been significantly improved, which led to an increase in customer satisfaction.

Opis:
In recent years the progress in algorithms optimization has resulted in many solutions in the area of fully automatic reconstructing of 3D model of any object from a sequence of non-metric images. An important step in the formation of a 3D model is so-called matching process of homologous points in the sequence of images. This stage is still a bottleneck for the reconstruction of objects consisting of uniform surfaces, such as sculptures, reliefs, or even the human body. The solution may be to apply an artificial variety to surfaces by covering them with a random texture pattern. A wide range of multimedia projectors, with increasingly higher resolutions and luminosities, enables us to perform the projection of any texture on the object, and then to register it. In this article, we present the idea of creating an artificial pattern, a structure that will provide significant improvement of automatic point identification stage, and the proper mapping of homologous points in the sequence of images. While creating a pattern allowing easy feature extraction does not present much of a problem, assurance of its uniqueness for the whole object for matching purposes, requires a deliberate idea. Statistical formulation of the problem demonstrates the high efficiency of the method.

Opis:
One of the contemporary political powers characterised by an ambivalent attitude toward state authority are extreme organisations. Agata Kałabunowska undertakes this issue in the chapter The vision of authority in political programmes of contemporary German extreme right organisations, which aims at depicting the attitude of selected radical organisations toward a broadly defined authority. Based on qualitative content analysis of political programmes, declarations and performances of five German right-wing organisations the author tackles the question about their attitude towards the actual state authority, as well as about their desired model of executing power. Several elements of the far right’ criticism towards authorities have been analysed, such as subservience to the foreign power of international organisations, faulty immigration policies, pressure within political parties or excessive bureaucratisation. The author points out that the multitude of far right’ arguments against current authorities is not equaled by quality or quantity of suggested political alternatives. The potential efficiency of suggested solutions is uncertain, which is accompanied by lack of exact vision on how to put them in practice, which makes these proposals unrealistic. What is more, due to the fact that the German extreme right does participate in the contested political game its message seems untrustworthy. The far right appears not capable – and definitely not willing – to fix the current system, allegedly depriving the nation from its real influence on the decision making process. This observation leads to the conclusion that the far right’ ideal vision of exercising power would be based on negation or distortion of current solutions. Although it was not possible to outline how this ideal would look like in details, the author concludes that we can expect from the extreme right that its imagined political authority will be inconsistent with liberal democratic rules, albeit not necessarily authoritarian nor totalitarian.
