Opis:
The antimicrobial impact of visible violet and blue light has been known for more than a century but hardly been applied for purposeful pathogen reduction or prevention. The disinfecting properties of wide-spread warm-white and cool-white light emitting diodes (LEDs) are investigated by irradiation of staphylococci with different LEDs and varying doses. Additionally, the combination of a white and a violet LED illumination is examined. Both white LEDs exhibit an antimicrobial effect, which seems to be dominated by the blue parts of the LED emissions. Unfortunately, the antimicrobial effect is weak in realistic illumination applications. Additional violet LEDs can significantly enhance this impact without a large change in human color perception. This allows reasonable applications in certain medical and domestic environments without endangering humans.

Opis:
Iron-carbon-codoped mesoporous titania nanocrystallines were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method based on the self-assembly technique using polyethylene glycol sorbitan monostearate (Tween 60) as template. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N_{2} adsorption, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and transient photocurrent responses analysis. The photocatalytic activity of Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} nanoparticles were evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO), p-nitrophenol (PNP) and biphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation. It was found that the as-prepared Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} sample showed excellent photocatalytic activity compared to undoped TiO_{2}. The highest activity was obtained for Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} sample calcined at 520°. The enhanced photocatalytic performances were attributed to the synergetic effects of good crystallizing action, appropriate phase composition and slow recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers. Based on the experimental results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism of as-prepared Fe-C-codoped TiO_{2} photocatalysts was also proposed and discussed.

Opis:
Objectives: Nowadays more and more newly introduced light sources (tungsten-halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL) and light-emitting diode (LED) lamps) are used in households. It is important to know whether their radiation poses any possible risk for human health or not. These light sources emit optical radiation not solely in the visible spectrum. Other bands emitted by these sources, i.e., ultraviolet and infrared, are potentially hazardous for human health. The visible light, especially the blue light, could also damage human retina. The purpose of this study was to determine the ultraviolet (UV) and blue light (BL) emissions from halogen bulbs, CFLs and LED lamps, and to evaluate them from the point of view of possible health risks for general public. Material and Methods: The exposure of UV and BL emissions from 19 types of CFLs, 11 types of halogen lamps and 4 types of LED lamps produced by different manufacturers were measured at 200 mm distance from the source. Results: The exposures to UV and BL were below the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) exposure limits in spite of the very conservative assumption of the assessment. Conclusions: Results of this study indicate that the UV and BL radiation from the newly introduced lamps does not exceed the current exposure limit values and thus, in comparison with the former incandescent bulbs, does not result in a higher risk for general public.

Opis:
Effect of visible light on the process of accelerated oxidation of dye contained in red paprika powder. The effect of temperature and visible light intensity on changes in ground paprika colour was investigated. In determination of changes in colour parameters there were used the colour space L*. a*, b*, the total colour change TCD and sample whiteness index WI. Investigations were carried out at three lighting intensity levels of D65 light (6000, 4500, 0 lx) at storage temperature (30º, 40º, 50ºC). The DOE model for investigation planning included in Statistica Program was used in investigations. The validation investigations were carried out to verify the model. Colour changes in the investigated samples were connected, first of all, with their lighting intensity and less so with storage temperature. A two-stage process of colour changes in the samples illuminated with the light of intensity 6000 lx was found. The carried out investigations can be used in predicting the time of changes in colour parameters of ground paprika exposed to intense radiation in the range of visible light.
Wpływ światła widzialnego na proces przyspieszonego utleniania barwnika zawartego w proszku z czerwonej papryki. W pracy badano wpływ temperatury i natężenia światła widzialnego na zmiany barwy mielonej papryki. Do określenia zmian parametrów barwy wykorzystano przestrzeń barw L*, a*, b* oraz całkowita zmianę barwy TCD, wskaźnik białości próbki WI. Badania przeprowadzono dla trzech poziomów intensywności oświetlenia światłem D65 (6000, 4500, 0 lx) w temperaturze przechowywania (30°, 40°, 50°C). W badaniach wykorzystano model planowania badań DOE zawarty w Programie Statistica. W celu weryfikacji modelu przeprowadzono badania walidacyjne. Zmiany barwy badanych próbek były związane przede wszystkim z intensywnością ich oświetlania, w mniejszym stopniu z temperaturą przechowywania. Zaobserwowano dwuetapowy proces zmiany barwy dla próbek oświetlonych światłem intensywności 6000 lx. Przeprowadzone badania mogą być wykorzystane do przewidywania czasu zmian parametrów barwy zmielonej papryki wystawionej na działanie intensywnego promieniowania w zakresie światła widzialnego.

Opis:
Nano-sized Y- Ag doped and co-doped TiO2 particles were synthesized using the sol–gel method and Ti(OBu)4 as TiO2 precursor. Their structural and optical properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), FT-IR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. The photocatalytic activity of these materials was investigated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model reaction under visible light irradiation. Ground state diffuse reflectance absorption studies reveal that both Y and Ag dopant cause deviations of the band gap to higher energies attesting that co-doping the TiO2 with Y and Ag could enhance the photocatalytic activity by delaying the electron–hole recombination by means of higher energy band gaps. Co-doping TiO2 at a level of 4% (Y, Ag) samples leads to a significant decrease in the crystallite size of photocatalyst and containing both anatase and Ag/AgCl components. However, the high photocatalytic performance is attributed to an efficient electron-hole pairs separation at the photocatalyst interfaces in addition to localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag particles. The development of these visible light- activated nanocatalysts has the potential of providing environmentally benign routes for water treatment.
