Opis:
The research on the effectiveness of removing heavy metals from water solutions by bacteria was carried out at the laboratory of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the University of Zielona Góra in 2007-2008. The research covered bacterial strains isolated from sludge, soil and water. The tests concerned the effect of 3 heavy metals: Pb (0,1%), Cu (0,1%) and Zn (0,1%). The results prove that due to the presence of heavy metals, the size of colonies was much lowered in comparison with the control pan. Some of the strains, reader doesnt know numbers in the 0,1% concentration of Cu and Zn in the culture scale. It turns out that this concentration was completely hazardous with respect to the growth of those bacterial strains. Considering all the heavy metals under analysis, it was found that Cu had the most hazardous effect on the growth of 4 bacterial strains, then Zn and Pb. Under the influence of 4 bacterial strains, the content of the metals that after 7-day long incubation remained is different depending on metal and bacterial strain. Removing Heavy Metals by bacteria from Water solutions heavy metals by bacteria from water solutions: Pb (34,38%), then Cu (29,69%) and Zn (21,88%). The content of the heavy metals removing by 4 strains was from 65,62% to 78,12%. The biggest amount removing was for Zn (78,12%) and the smallest for Zn (65,62%).

Opis:
In the presented studies an influence of the strong static magnetic field on the process of copper adsorption on activated carbon was analysed. The magnetic field was generated by the annular neodymium magnets, placed at the bottom of the glass reactors, with the magnetic induction value at the surface equal 0.517 T. Additionally, during the study an effect of temperature on the adsorption process efficiency and its susceptibility to the external magnetic field was also investigated. As a result of the study, it was found that using a magnetic modification can increase the efficiency of the adsorption process up to 80%. However, such a strong influence of the external magnetic field was observed only in the case of relatively low initial and equilibrium concentration of the adsorbate. With the increase of the equilibrium concentration, stimulating nature of the magnetic field weakened significantly until finally at an equilibrium concentration about 80 mg/dm3, it was almost negligible. In addition, it was also found that the magnetic field modifications were much more efficient if the adsorption processes were conducted at the higher temperature.

Opis:
The adsorption of copper ions from synthetic aqueous solutions on natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) was examined. In order to determine the rate of adsorption and the copper uptake at equilibrium, a series of experiments were performed under batch conditions from single ion solutions. Equilibrium data were evaluated based on adsorption (Langmuir and Freundlich) isotherms. The adsorption kinetics is reasonably fast. In the first 20 min of the experiment, approximately 80% of Cu2+ ions is adsorbed from the solutions. Data obtained from the kinetic experiments have been described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model as well as by the Weber–Morris and Furusawa–Smith models.

Opis:
Application of phytoremediation process for the purification of the environment, particularly of surface water (running or standing) may be a future alternative to existing standard purification methods, in particular for heavy metal removal. Numerous hyperaccumulators are known which can be used for the purification of water, soil or sediment such as Salvinia or Lemna lemnids, occurring in temperate climates, and thus on the territory of Poland. Ability of mercury accumulation by Salvinia natans and Lemna minor was analyzed. The phytoremediation ability of lemnids was compared depending on their origin - commercial (artificial) cultures and those obtained from the natural environment. Phytoremediation process was carried out for a period of 14 days for the concentration of 0.15 mg Hg/dm3 and 0.2 mg Hg/dm3. It was found that both Salvinia natans and Lemna minor show a significant increase in biomass in the presence of mercury, even up to 76% for Lemna minor and 40% for Salvinia natans. The result of this increase was incorporation a considerable amount of mercury in the tissues of plant. The quantity of mercury in plants biomass was in the range of 41.16-115.28 mg Hg/kg DM, while in the control samples - only 0.2-0.6 mg Hg/kg DM.
