Opis:
Introduction and objectives. An increased incidence of depressive disorders observed in recent years in the Polish and world population is a serious health problem. The aim of the study was to compare dietary habits and nutritional status of patients with recurrent depressive disorders, depending on their place of residence. Their impact on selected metabolic parameters was also considered. Materials and method. The study group comprised 96 women and 84 men reporting to the Outpatient Mental Health Clinic at the Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Bialystok in north-eastern Poland. The average age of the women was 46.7±11.7 years, and of men 47.0±11.3 years. In the quantitative assessmentof diets, 24-hour food recall interviews were conducted. Assessment of the nutritional status of the respondents consisted of anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis and biochemical parameters. Results. It was show that the diets of female urban inhabitants were characterized by a significantly lower energy value and total fat content, compared to their rural counterparts. The food rations of men living in the city had a significantly higher energy value, protein content and total FAT, compared to rural residents. It was also noted that urban residents of both genders were characterized by a lower percentage of body fat, both visceral and subcutaneous (women), and a higher water content than rural residents. Conclusions. The study showed dietary errors in all compared groups, regardless of place of residence, which was reflected in the nutritional status of the respondents. The results also indicated that during the declared change in dietary habits, the treatment of depressive patients should include dietary instructions in order to ensure an optimum supply of nutrients.

Introduction and objective. The aim of the study was evaluation of the urban and rural differences in ovarian cancer patients’ characteristics at the moment of diagnosis. Materials and methods. The study comprised women with ovarian cancer diagnosed and treated in the Division of Gynecological Surgery of Poznan University of Medical Sciences between 2004–2011. The patients were divided into 3 groups based on their place of residence: 1) patients residing in large cities (over 50,000 people), 2) inhabitants of small towns (below 50,000 people), 3) women from rural areas. Results. Among the studied groups of patients no differences were found in the FIGO stage at diagnosis (p=0.453), histological grade of the tumour (p=0.916), histopathological types of ovarian neoplasms (p=0.431), median tumour volume (p=0.855), presence of fluid in the pouch of Douglas (p=0.872). Women with ovarian cancer residing in large cities had lower median parity (p=0.0005), higher education level status (p=0.0001), and experienced menarche at an earlier age (p=0.039). There were no differences in the use of oral contraception (p=0.93) and body mass index (p=0.23) between the women included in the study. Conclusions. There were no differences in advancement of ovarian cancer at the moment of diagnosis or in tumour type and size between women residing large cities, small towns and rural areas. Several ovarian cancer risk factors were more common among ovarian cancer patients living in urbanized areas.

Opis:
Background. Changes to the body and its proportions, especially body mass, are frequently and critically assessed by the young according to peer pressure and opinions prevalent in their living and home surroundings, as well as through role models created by the media; particularly those promoting fashions for having a slim figures. The desire to achieve this ideal, is thus responsible for adolescents undertaking a variety of actions/behaviour to regulate their body weight. Objective. To compare healthy lifestyle behaviour in secondary school pupils living in towns and the countryside who have variable weights and heights associated with a self-assessment of body mass. Material and Methods. Subjects were n=1,279 pupils aged 13-15 years, attending secondary school. Those from the countryside environments were n=273 (136 boys and 137 girls), whilst those from urban areas, (towns) were n=1,006 (512 boys and 494 girls). Both weights and heights were measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) determined. Threshold values for overweight, obesity and underweight, were used to assign BMI groups according to the procedure of Cole et al. Perceptions on how subjects assessed their body weight and remedial actions so arising, were surveyed using the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (YRBS) questionnaire. The relationships between the factors studied were subjected to log-linear analysis and their significance evaluated by Chi2 test using a significance level of p≤ 0.05. Results. No significant differences were found in the observed frequencies of overweight, obesity and underweight groups between students from the different environments studied. Pupils having a normal body mass constituted 68.9% of total subjects. There were also no differences seen in body weight perception between the various environments. Approximately 70% of subjects properly assessed their own body mass, however the methods of its assessment differed between boys and girls. The main ways adopted for regulating body mass was found to be exercise and diet in both student groups. Significantly more girl pupils living in towns, (54.9%) did physical exercises, aimed at weight reduction, compared to those living in the countryside (43.8%). Conclusions. Only small differences in observed frequencies of height-weight were seen between urban and rural dwelling pupils; the same being true for lifestyle behaviour in controlling weight. Irrespective of residence, two thirds of pupils, aged 13-16 years, correctly assessed their own body mass. In children and adolescents, improving self-awareness of body proportions can be achieved through educating on what the significance of having a healthy BMI is, effective ways of its estimation and safe methods for regulation.
Wprowadzenie. Cel. Celem badań było porównanie zachowań zdrowotnych związanych z postrzeganiem własnej masy ciała uczniów miejskich i wiejskich gimnazjów o zróżnicowanych proporcjach wagowo-wzrostowych. Materiał i metody. Materiał obejmował dane pomiarowe i ankietowe 1279 uczniów w wieku 13-16 lat, z dwóch różnych środowisk: wiejskiego (273 uczniów – 136 chłopców i 137 dziewcząt) i miejskiego (1006 osób – 512 chłopców i 494 dziewcząt). U młodzieży zmierzono wysokość i masę ciała, wyliczono wskaźnik BMI. Z kwestionariusza Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) uzyskano informacje o ocenie własnej masy ciała oraz działaniach podejmowanych w celu jej zmiany. Do ustalenia związków pomiędzy analizowanymi czynnikami, wykorzystano analizę log-liniową. Istotność statystyczną otrzymanych zależności oceniano testem Chi2 na poziomie istotności p≤ 0,05. Wyniki. Około 70% badanych właściwie oceniało własną masę ciała, lecz chłopców i dziewczęta różnił sposób jej oceny.

Knowledge of surface runoff characteristics allows creating better conditions for landscape management, whether rural or urban. We focused on a determination of a volume of surface water runoff and it velocity in this paper. A direct measurement was done on an experimental area with three different slopes in a laboratory. Results of direct measurements were compared with results from a model SMODERP and NRCS method used in GIS environment. The velocity of surface runoff was also calculated by a mathematical equation used in literature. The results of surface runoff volume from GIS were equal in all cases, but not the velocity. The results of SMODERP simulation and direct measurements are similar. The calculated velocity was the highest in case of first slope, and the lowest in other cases. Differences of the velocity varied in a range 1.10 - 11.06 %. The volume of surface runoff varied more, mainly the results of NRCS Curve Number method in GIS (up to 41 %). The results show that the higher slope, the higher runoff velocity and volume is.

Introduction. Supracondylar fractures of the humeral bone are frequent injuries in children. It has been affirmed that supracondylar fractures have an excellent prognosis when proper treatment is applied. Objective. Present of the statistical relationships between fractures occurring and patient’s development period; the relation between development period and site of the fracture and statistical relationship between development period and gender of the patients. Also indicated are the place of residence of the hospitalized patients and time of admission to the Clinic after injury. Materials and method. Research was based on the data of paediatric patients treated in the Clinic for Paediatric Surgery, Traumatology and Paaediatric Orthopaedics, and Rehabilitation Clinic of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland, between 1986- 2010. An independent Chi-square Test was used for statistical analysis (c²). Results. The majority of patients were admitted to the Clinic on the day of injury. Of these patients, 71% lived in the urban area of the Lublin region where all the children received medical care in hospital directly after trauma; 29% of children came from the rural areas of the Lublin region, and 10% of them were admitted to hospital 24 or more hours after the injury. Conclusion. 71% of patients lived in the urban areas of the Lublin region and the main cause of injury was a fall from a higher level onto an outstretched upper left limb. Most supracondylar fractures of the humeral bone concerned children at school and adolescent age. Despite the fact that some of the hospitalised children lived in the rural areas of the Lublin region, the majority were admitted to the Clinic directly after trauma and received timely treatment.

Opis:
The operation of large power plants, including power stations, and combined heat and power stations, causes the emission of significant amounts of gaseous pollutants into the environment. As a result, in the urban and agricultural areas occurs a pollution of undesirable gaseous substances, such as nitrogen and sulfur oxides. This is especially dangerous for living organisms, soil and water, because, in combination with water vapor, these pollutants are the cause of acid rain. In addition, nitrogen oxides participate in the formation of ground-level ozone, which affects both human health and the condition of existing vegetation. Therefore, the distribution of air pollutants (NO2, SO2 and O3) in the selected urban and rural areas, under the influence of power plants, located in the Lodz Voivodeship, in Poland, in Central-Eastern Europe, was analyzed for a 10-year period (2007-2016). As a result, it was possible to evaluate the impact of the entry into force of Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 “on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe” on the changes in emissions and concentrations of pollutants in selected locations. As a result of the analysis, a significant decrease in the concentration of SO2 (by 75% in the urban area and by 59% in the rural area), and small changes (from - 8% to + 12%) in NO2 and O3 concentrations in ambient air were found. This indicates the effectiveness of actions aimed at reducing SO2 emissions, however the influence of the power plants on the concentration of air pollutants in these areas is not clear. At the same time, considering the criterion of permissible concentration of ozone and nitrogen dioxide, although the air quality did not improve, the air quality index can be considered as being in the category of "good".

Opis:
Unemployment is traditionally a phenomenon analysed by economists. Recently these investigations are often run with use of methods allowing for identification of spatial autocorrelation on the labour market. The aim of the study is to analyse spatial interrelationships of the unemployment rate between Polish regions (NUTS2) and then to verify if any results can be interpreted through a perspective of the urban-rural classification for NUTS 3 regions applied by the European Union. Research covered the period from 2004 to 2014 and was based on the data of the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The global and local Moran’s statistics were applied. Results prove existence of spatial patterns on labour market in Poland - local statistics indicate that outliers and clusters of similar regions occur.
Badanie z wykorzystaniem danych GUS objęło lata 2004-2014. Zastosowano globalną i lokalną statystykę Morana.

The aim of this study is to identify rural and urban patterns of consumption expenditure and to evaluate whether convergence occurs between them. The results based on Household Budget Surveys data from the years 2006-2015 prove that the rural consumption pattern is less sustainable compared with the urban one and that they are akin to each other. The value of expenditure on higher needs (restaurants and hotels, leisure and culture) in rural households grows faster than in urban households, which proves some convergence between them.

Opis:
Introduction. Dental caries is still a social problem in many countries, including Poland. Through epidemiological studies conducted in index groups among children and adults, it is possible to monitor its progress and take appropriate action. The Podlaskie region is an area where the severity of dental caries in children has been the highest in the country for a few years, both in urban and rural settings. Objective. Evaluation and comparison of indicators of the progress of caries – Decayed Missing Filled Teeth (DMFT) – in 12-year-olds from the urban and rural areas of north-eastern Poland, measured between 2003–2010. Materials and method. In 2003 and 2010, respectively, 445 children were examined: in 2003 – 188: 101 boys, 87 girls; 98 from urban areas, 90 from rural areas, and in 2010 – 257 adolescents: 134 boys, 123 girls; 157 from urban areas and 70 from rural areas. The study protocol was strictly subordinated to the WHO study monitor guidelines. DMFT indices were evaluated in particular years. The distribution of their individual components was then compared and analyzed. The outcomes resulting from the place of residence and gender of the adolescents were taken into account. In the statistical analysis, Shapiro-Wilk test and Mann-Whitney U test were used. Results. In 2003, the mean value of DMFT was 4.76, and in 2010 it decreased to 3.36 (p<0.0001). In 2003, DMFT was 4.42 in the rural areas, and after 7 years it has risen to 4.77. There was a significant decrease in the value of the index (from 5.08 to 2.82, p<0.0001) in the urban areas. No significant differences based on gender were observed between these years. Conclusions. The values of caries intensity among 12-year-olds from the Podlaskie region, both in rural and urban areas, are still high. Among children from the rural areas, dental caries progression is more visible and has not improved during the years 2003–2010. These findings should lead to the development of programmes for the inhabitants of rural areas.
