Opis:
Interpretation of sensor data from machine elements is challenging, if no prior knowledge of the system is available. Evaluation methods must adapt surrounding conditions and operation modes. As supervised learning models can be time-consuming to set up, unsupervised learning poses as alternative solution. This paper introduces a new clustering scheme that incorporates iterative cluster retrieval in order to track the clustering results over time. The approach is used to identify changing machine element states such as operating conditions and undesired changes, like incipient damage or wear. We show that knowledge about the evolving clusters can be used to identify operation and failure events. The approach is validated for machine elements with slide and roll contacts, such as ball screws and bearings. The data used has been captured using vibration and acoustic emission sensors. The results show a general applicability to the unsupervised monitoring of machine elements using the proposed approach.

Opis:
Machine learning has been widely used in manufacturing, leading to significant advances in diverse problems, including the prediction of wear and remaining useful life (RUL) of machine tools. However, the data used in many cases correspond to simple and stable processes that differ from practical applications. In this work, a novel dataset consisting of eight cutting tools with complex tool paths is used. The time series of the tool paths, corresponding to the three-dimensional position of the cutting tool, are grouped according to their shape. Three unsupervised clustering techniques are applied, resulting in the identification of DBA-k-means as the most appropriate technique for this case. The clustering process helps to identify training and testing data with similar tool paths, which is then applied to build a simple two-feature prediction model with the same level of precision for RUL prediction as a more complex four-feature prediction model. This work demonstrates that by properly selecting the methodology and number of clusters, tool paths can be effectively classified, which can later be used in prediction problems in more complex settings.

Opis:
Collaborative Clustering is a data mining task the aim of which is to use several clustering algorithms to analyze different aspects of the same data. The aim of collaborative clustering is to reveal the common underlying structure of data spread across multiple data sites by applying clustering techniques. The idea of collaborative clustering is that each collaborator shares some information about the segmentation (structure) of its local data and improve its own clustering with the information provided by the other learners. This paper analyses the impact of the quality and the diversity of the potential learners to the quality of the collaboration for topological collaborative clustering algorithms based on the learning of a Self-Organizing Map (SOM). Experimental analysis on real data-sets showed that the diversity between learners impact the quality of the collaboration. We also showed that some internal indexes of quality are a good estimator of the increase of quality due to the collaboration.
