    Opis:
    Black alder is a species capable of producing sylleptic shoots. This process is also detected in alders at older age. The objective of this work is to characterise sylleptic shoots and to determine the role they play in the formation of crown branching. The empirical material used in the experiment was collected in the north and south of Poland and considers both young and old trees.

    Answer for the following questions was obtained basing on the empirical material collected on 48 sample trees: (1) from which of the axillary buds on the main shoot the side shoots will grow out, (2) which of the side shoots have the greatest survival chance, and (3) which of the axillary buds will remain dormant. Obtained results enabled, together with so−far published ones, to elaborate model of the development of branching for silver birch. In that way, another step that leads to the determination of the criteria that could be applied in assessment of the damage to the given tree species was realized.

    Opis:
    Decrease in emission of harmful gases and dusts in industrialised regions of Poland triggered improvement of forest health. Results of research dealing with pine stands in the Olkusz Forest District prove that. It was shown that number of side shoots growing out in the whorl rose up to 4−5. Trees developed height increment over two times higher than the model one and as a result height growth rate increased. Examined stands moved to the higher site index class during last 25 years. The need of further research on growth processes of trees being under anthropogenic influence was emphasised.

    Opis:
    Research on length of the main shoot, number and length of internodes and side shoots was carried out on the basis of measurements on 50 birches. The paper describes average values, dispersion and correlation of investigated features. Obtained results are the first step in the attempt to build a model of Common birch crown development and to specify tree damage criteria.

    Opis:
    Knots are remnants of branches left on the stem or visible in the side of the tree. They affect wood quality and its final utilisation. The rate of self−pruning depends on many factors, including tree species. The balance of assimilation and disassimilation to a considerable degree determines natural clearance of branches. The aim of the study was to determine the dynamics of natural clearance of branches in European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) varying in breast height diameter and height. Analyses were conducted in stands of different age classes. After mean sample trees were felled (selected according to Urich I) macroscopic observations were conducted, classifying individual zones of the stem into separate classes according to the rate of self−pruning. Analysed traits were found to vary considerably. A strong relationship was shown between breast height diameter, tree height and the length of the knot−free zone. The crown of the analysed forest−forming species retains similar relative length throughout the life of a tree.
