W opracowaniu przedstawiono omówienie podstawowych funkcji tribologii jako samodzielnej dyscypliny naukowej. Stanowi ono próbę uogólnienia dość często formułowanych w piśmiennictwie zadań tribologii, przede wszystkim zadań o znaczeniu technicznym. Omówiono społeczne funkcje tribologii. Przedstawiono ewolucję funkcji społecznych wynikającą ze zmienności potrzeb rozwoju techniki. Zwrócono również uwagę na wzrastającą rolę metod i środków ograniczania roli tarcia w mechanizmach.
The article presents the description of the basic functions of tribology as an independent scientific field. It represents an attempt to generalise the tasks of tribology that are quite often formulated in the literature, especially tasks of technical importance. The article discusses the social functions of tribology. The evolution of the social functions of tribology is also presented, which arises from technological development needs. It draws attention to the increasing role of the methods of reducing of the role of friction in mechanisms.

Opis:
Ailments linked to back pain is a serious problem not only medical but also social. Not only elder people but also people in working age suffers from problems related to spine pain. The most common disorders of the spine are pain syndromes of the lumbar part where center of gravity of the human body is located and w here major forces are acting on the vertebrae and intervertebral discs. The market currently offers a variety of spinal implant solutions (FIG 1). In the Metal Forming Institute there is realized research Project entitled Investigations and spine implants functionality evaluation in material and tribological aspects. In the frame of the Project it was designed and manufactured special simulator adapted for intervetebrals pine discs implants investigations. Simulator scheme is presented on FIG. 2. Main goals of the realized Project are: • Investigation of friction-mechanical processes during implant usage. • Evaluation of wear intensity of various types of intervertebral discs and investigations of appearing wear products. • Selection of optimal material and surface machining method providing minimal wear of intervertebral disc elements wear. For experiments there was implant designed by K. Skalski and J. Skoworodko selected [1], which consists of 3 elements: upper liner, lower liner and nucleus pulpous (FIG. 3). Actually there are 3 types of friction couple materials tested: 316L steel - polyethylene UHMWPE – 316L steel, titanium alloy Ti6Al4V – polyethylene UHMWPE and nitrided Ti6Al4V titanium alloy – polyethylene UHMWPE. In fluence of number of cycles on friction coefficient, surface roughness and poliethylene linner thickness change illustrates FIG. 4. As it results from performed investigations, too high hardness level of metal elements (upper and lower clasps) provides to accelerated wear of the polyethylene part. New challenge is application of “metal-metal” friction couple.

The article deals with the experimental detection of the tribotechnical parameters for two different types of sliding bearings which are intended for operation without an additional lubrication due to the increasing requirements in ecology and environment. The dominant tribotechnical parameters of the self-lubricating bearing are the coefficient of friction and temperature. To determine these parameters, an experimental method was applied in this paper. The introductory part deals with materials of self-lubricating sliding bearings, their properties and usage. The experimental part consists of the evaluation of friction characteristics and geometric change of a surface after sliding pairs were being worn. Experimental examined sliding pairs comprise a sliding bearing and the shaft. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of radial force on tribotechnical parameters in order to predict the behavior of examined sliding bearings in real operating conditions.

This paper presents 3D FEM simulation results performed for the power law and JC (Johnson-Cook) material constitutive models for two sets of friction parameters. The friction conditions were tested using pin-on-disc tribometer. Machining tests were carried out using carbide cutting tools coated with a TiAlN monolayer without coolants. The selection of machining conditions was based on real production data. In addition, a real CAD model of the cutting tool insert was implemented. Moreover, an advanced technique of meshing the cutting edge and the grooved rake face was applied. The simulations include cutting forces and cutting temperature. Finally, FEM simulations were compared with measurements in order to improve the simulation strategy.

Semi-metallic brake pads are quite a good choice for performance-driven automotive industries, because of improved braking performance in a more comprehensive range of temperatures. In this study, a semi-metallic brake pad is fabricated through a powder metallurgy processing technique with two compositions of powders with a different weight ratio of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), flash, Aluminum oxide (Al2O3), Barium sulfate (BaSO4), Phenolic resin, Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), Graphite for automotive application. A well-distributed composition was indicated by the microstructure, which exhibited a uniform dispersion of hard particles throughout the matrix. BP-20Cu-20Fe specimen exhibited a high hardness value of 171Hv. Under higher loads of 70 N, the specimen BP-20Cu-20Fe showed excellent wear resistance, with a low wear rate of 1.072×10-6 g/Nm. On the other hand, specimen BP-20Cu-20Fe showed a notable 35% increase in friction coefficient when the load was increased from 30 N to 70 N.The surface morphology, elemental distribution, and worn surface features and characteristics are examined using advanced instrumental techniques.

W artykule zaprezentowano dydaktyczne aspekty tribologii. Przeanalizowano funkcje przedmiotu w programie dydaktycznym. Omówiono różne warianty miejsca tribologii w procesie dydaktycznym. Przedstawione warianty udziału tribologii w procesie dydaktycznym oraz świadomość jej interdyscyplinarności pozwoliły na określenie prawdopodobnych funkcji, jakie może spełnić tribologia w procesie dydaktycznym. Przeanalizowano także sugestie ogólne z zastosowaniem ich do dydaktycznego ujęcia tribologii.
The article presents aspects of teaching tribology. The functions of the subject in the teaching programme are analysed. The different variants of the place of tribology in the teaching process are described. Presented variants of tribology in the teaching process and awareness of its interdisciplinary enabled the identification of probable function that tribology can meet in teaching process. Also, there were analyzed the general suggestions and their application into teaching approach to tribology.

Investigations include alloying the PMHSS6-5-3 steel surface layer with carbide and ceramic powders WC, VC, TiC, SiC, Si3N4 and Al2O3, using the high power diode laser (HPDL). Laser treatment is especially promising for solving contemporary surface engineering problems making it possible to focus precisely the delivered energy in the form of heat in the surface layer. The structural mechanism was determined of surface layers development, effect was studied of alloying parameters, method on structure refinement and influence of these factors on the mechanical properties of surface layer, and especially on its abrasive wear resistance. The fine grained martensite structure is responsible for hardness increase of the alloyed layer. The tribological wear relationships were determined for laser treated surface layers, determining friction coefficient, and wear trace shape developed due to the abrasive wear of the investigated surfaces. Comparison of the laser treatment parameters and tribological properties of surface layer after remelting and alloying with hard particles of the PMHSS6-5-3 steel using the high power diode laser to obtain the optimum service properties is the outcome of the investigations carried out.

Titanium and its alloys are one of the most popular metallic materials used in medicine for many years. Their favorable mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance and good biotolerance in an environment of tissues and body fluids, cause that they are widely used as construction material of orthopaedic dental and neurological implants. Their disadvantages are poor tribological properties manifested by high coefficient of friction, scuffing and tendency to formation of adhesive couplings. In many research centers the works on improving the unfavorable tribological properties of titanium alloys are conducted. They rely on the use of modern methods of surface treatment including the thermo-chemical methods (nitriding, carburizing, oxidation) and the synthesis of thin films using PVD and CVD methods. In the presented work the glow discharge oxidation was applied to improve the surface properties of two-phase Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb titanium alloys. The results include a description of the obtained structure of the surface layer, surface topography, micro-hardness, wear ratio and corrosion resistance. The obtained results indicate changes in the surface layer of the material. The surface hardness was more than doubled and the depth of increased hardness region was up to 85 microns. This, in turn, several times decreased the wear rate of the modified materials while reducing the wear rate of the countersample. At the same time the carried out thermo-chemical treatment did not cause any structural changes in the core material. The oxidation process preferably influenced the corrosion properties of titanium alloys. Both, significant increase in the corrosion potential (approx. 0.36 V), as well as increased polarization resistance were observed. The modified surfaces also retained a high resistance to pitting corrosion.

The aim of this research paper is to present laser surface treatment technologies, investigation of properties of the HS6-5-3-8 high-speed steel \ alloying with ceramic particles using High Power Diode Laser. Selection of laser operating conditions is discussed, as well as beam face quality after remelting, hardness, micro hardness test, wear resistant. Remelting of the steel with introducing into liquid molten pool the alloying additions in the form of ceramic powders, causes significant increase of properties of surface layer of investigated steel in comparison to its analogical properties obtained through conventional heat treatment, depending on the laser beam power implemented for remelting. The increase of hardness of surface layer obtained throughout remelting and alloying with carbides by high power diode laser is accompanied by increase of tribological properties, when comparing to the steel processed with conventional heat treatment.

Opis:
A significance of tribology for construction and maintenance of machines, particularly in motorization, is discussed in the paper. Examples on negative and positive effects of friction are given. An attention has been paid to opportunities of preventing negative friction effects, based on tibological knowledge which should be used not only in an operation process of technical equipment but also in the phase of their design. A close relationship between the development of tribology, a safety level and economics of machines operation, especially motor vehicles, is emphasized. The DT-12 Scania internal-combustion engine as an example of complex tribological system, the Audi Q7 car AL 420-6A six extension automatic gear transmission as an example of complex tribological system, the rolling friction power as a vehicle driving power, economical effect of 15W/40 oil replacement with OW/30 oil, the logical model of piston - cylinder set in a dynamic state are presented in the paper.

The main aim of the presented research was examination of new tribological pairs made of different types of steel. Materials of disc probes were submitted to unusual heat treatment processes and salt bath nitriding. The research is focused on the friction coefficients and mass losses of the material probes. Based on the results it was noticed that the best wear resistant pair was bearing steel 100Cr6 coupled with high speed steel S705. The lowest friction coefficient appeared for the pair bearing steel 100Cr6 and maraging steel C350.

The study of the thermal, wear and corrosion properties of developed nanocomposite coatings of Zn-Al2O3 and Zn-Cr2O3 was carried out. The coatings were produced by electrodeposition technique from chloride acidic bath. Laboratory tube furnace was used for the thermal analysis. The wear test was performed using CETR tribo-tester dry reciprocating tester. The hardness properties were investigated using diamond base Dura microhardness tester. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) affixed with energy dispersive spectrometry was used to study the morphological characteristics, before and after wear deformation. The corrosion degradation behavior was observed using linear polarization technique in 3.5% NaCl. In all the interaction, the effects of the incorporated Al2O3 and Cr2O3 nanoparticulates on zinc rich coatings were found to have an excellent influence on the wear, corrosion and thermal stability properties. The fabrication and properties exhibited by the alloys were therefore found to be satisfactory and shows good predictability and applicability.

A class of very important industrial-grade biolubricants was synthesized from plant-derived fatty acids (oleic and isostearic acid) by direct esterifi cation of trimethylolpropane according to novel effective and high selective method using Sn bis(2-ethylhexanoate) as catalyst. Model transesterifi cation reactions were performed with oleic and isostearic acids to optimize the reaction conditions to obtain maximum content of TMP triesters. Used specifi c homogeneous Sn catalyst allows to obtain TMP esters with very high content of triesters, above of 94 wt% without deep vacuum purifying distillation. Both TMP esters were evaluated for their physicochemical and tribological properties using ASTM standards. Both TMP esters exhibited high viscosity indexes and excellent low temperature properties.

Poniższe opracowanie zawiera informacje dotyczące stopów kobaltu stosowanych w stomatologii oraz medycynie. Praca zawiera przegląd literatury opisujący ogólne właściwości stopów kobaltu. Opisano także wpływ warunków wytwarzania i wykorzystywanych dodatków stopowych na strukturę oraz właściwości mechaniczne tych stopów. W opracowaniu umieszczona została metodyka przeprowadzonych badań oraz uzyskane wyniki. Do badań wybrane zostały dwa stopy na osnowie kobaltu Co-CrMo-W oraz Co-Cr-Ni-Mo. Pierwszy z nich wytworzony został techniką odlewniczą drugi natomiast wyniku obróbki plastycznej. Przeprowadzona została analiza składu chemicznego, a następnie badania tribologiczne in vitro zrealizowane na tribotesterze typu „ball-on-disc”. Przedstawiona została porównawcza charakterystyka tribologiczna tych stopów.
This study provides information about the cobalt alloys used in dentistry and medicine. The work includes a review of the literature describing the general properties of cobalt alloys. In addition it describes the impact of the manufacturing conditions and alloy additives used , on the structure and mechanical properties of these alloys. The research methodology and the results obtained has been presented in the study. Two cobalt-based alloys Co-CrMo-W and Co-Cr-Ni-Mo were selected for the tests. The first one was prepared with the use of casting technique whereas the second was obtained due to plastic forming. An analysis of the chemical composition and in vitro tribological tests with the use of tribotester of "ball-on-disc" type was conducted. Comparative tribological characteristics of these alloys has been presented.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań tribologicznych materiałów zastosowanych na elementy łożysk tocznych. Celem badań było określenie właściwości tribologicznych elementów wielkogabarytowego łożyska tocznego krzyżowego, wykonanych ze stopu aluminium serii 6xxx, metodami obróbki plastycznej oraz serii 7xxx metodami metalurgii proszków. Badania zrealizowano z wykorzystaniem testera tribologicznego T-05 (ITeE – PIB) pracującego w układzie badawczym typu blok – pierścień. Do badań tribologicznych wytypowano skojarzenie separator – pierścień łożyska (aluminium – aluminium) oraz separator – rolka (aluminium – stal). Próbkę stanowił nie-ruchomy blok z promieniem, wykonany ze stopu aluminium EN AW-6060 lub EN AW-7075 dociskany stała siłą F = 100 N do przeciwpróbki, którą był pierścień wykonany ze stopu aluminium EN AW-7075 po procesie anodowania lub ze stali 100Cr6, obracający się ze stałą prędkością 100 obr/min. Testy tarciowo-zużyciowe zrealizowano na drodze tarcia 2000 m w temperaturze otoczenia (23°C) bez udziału środka smarnego, z zastosowaniem warstwy proszku nanoMoS2, z zastosowaniem smaru Tytalit lub z zastosowaniem warstwy proszku nano-MoS2 i smaru Tytalit. Proszek nano-MoS2 nanoszono na powierzchnię współpracującą bloku metodą kulowania, a smar Tytalit nakładano na powierzchnię współpracującą pierścienia bezpośrednio przed rozpoczęciem testu. Wykazano, że naniesienie na współpracującą powierzch-nię bloku warstwy proszku nano-MoS2 oraz wprowadzenie do strefy tarcia smaru Tytalit, wpłynęło znacząco na zmniejszenie oporów tarcia w badanych węzłach tarcia, a tym samym zmniejszyło zużycie materiału.
This article presents the results of tribological tests of materials applied in roller bearing parts. The goal of tests was to determine the tribological properties of parts of a large-size cross roller bearing made from 6xxx-series aluminum alloy by means of metal forming methods and from 7xxx-series aluminum alloy by means of powder metallurgy methods. Tests were conducted using a T-05 tribological tester (ITeE - PIB) working in a block – ring testing system. The bearing’s separator – ring (aluminum – aluminum) and separator – roller (aluminum – steel) pairs were selected for friction tests. The sample was an immobile block with a ray, made from EN AW-6060 or EN AW-7075 aluminum alloy, pressed with a constant force of F = 100 N to the countersample, which was a ring made from anodized EN AW-7075 aluminum alloy or 100Cr6 steel, rotating at a constant speed of 100 rpm. Friction and wear tests were performed over a friction path of 2000 m at ambient temperature (23°C) without lubricant, with the application of a nano-MoS2 powder layer, with the application of Tytalit grease, or with the application of a layer of nanoMoS2 powder and Tytalit grease. Nano-MoS2 powder was applied to the friction surface of the block by ball burnishing, and Tytalit grease was applied to the friction surface of the 2 ring immediately prior to testing. It was demonstrated that applying a nano-MoS2 powder layer to the block’s friction surface and introducing Tytalit grease into the friction zone significantly reduced friction resistance in the tested friction pairs and thus reduced material wear.
