    Opis:
    The article presents the essence of security management in railway transport and to identify the priorities of Poland’s transportation system. The main problem of paper was formulated as follows: How is the Safety Management System of Rail Transport functioning, taking into account national and international legal regulations and existing threats? In the solving of mentioned problem, the following research methods were applied: analogy, definition, analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, modeling and diagnostic survey with expert research sample. The research was carried out with emploees of company PKP PLK S.A. A systemic approach underlies the Safety Management System (SMS) functioning now in Poland. To guarantee the proper conduct of transport, each railway transportation enterprise and each administrator of infrastructure is required to create a system based on effective risk management. Adequately prepared SMS procedures should assure the implementation of risk control means and the monitoring of the effectiveness of the applied solutions in order to warrant the due level of safety. Presently, digital transformation is of major importance to the development of railway transport. New management systems will be based on technologies utilizing the Internet, automatization, robotization, and new tools, such as big data.

    W artykule przedstawiono rynek transportu kolejowego w Polsce, z uwzględnieniem wszystkich rodzajów towarów przewożonych z wykorzystaniem infrastruktury kolejowej. Zaprezentowano najbardziej istotne akty prawne z obszaru kolejnictwa oraz od dokonano diagnozy transportu kolejowego w odniesieniu do zmian, które nastąpiły na przestrzeni ostatnich lat. W artykule poruszono problematykę związaną z klasyfikacją towarów niebezpiecznych, uwzględniając zagrożenia wynikające z transportu niniejszych ładunków. Dodatkowo przedstawiono podstawowe wytyczne dotyczące zabezpieczenia towarów przewożonych transportem kolejowym oraz działania podejmowane na wypadek zaistnienia sytuacji kryzysowej.
    An article constitutes characterization of basic information about rail transport of goods. Firstly, it presents basic information about rail transport such as national and international rules of law, rail’s infrastructure and main companies responsible for the organization of transport. Secondly, paper discussed the threats connected with rail transport of goods and it shows procedures and behaviors which should be taken in case of an accident on the railroad. Another theme mentioned in the paper concerns rescue during the rail transport of dangerous goods. The proposition is to improve existing rescue system what will permit to increase the safety of people and the environment. The Article is finished by a brief summary of content described in it.
