Opis:: Each day more than 3,000 people are killed in the transport system worldwide, most of whom are victims of road accidents. Poland, just like the other EU countries, experiences a disproportion between the number of road accidents and other transport accidents. Each mode has a different safety management system with different databases, transport infrastructure authorities and accident investigation bodies, systems for tracking the movement of vehicles, trains and ships. Although significantly dissimilar, transport modes and their safety management systems can be improved through integration and the use of good national and international practice in the entire transport sector. This is in line with the European Union's policy, which in its 2001 White Paper encouraged member states to undertake work on a European methodology of independent transport safety investigation. ZEUS Project with its aim to build a structure of integrated transport safety system in Poland is an example of the work. International experience shows that an independent investigation agency working across all modes of transportation can most effectively improve safety. An intermodal agency provides economy of operation, transfer of safety lessons between different modes of transportation, the advancement of new and innovative investigation techniques and the ability to focus on key issues of concern in all modes. It is therefore suggested that serious consideration be given to a unified independent agency wherever it is feasible.

Opis:: Ensuring transport safety is one of the key areas of transport companies' operations. Management and organization processes not only in the intermodal transport are associated with decision-making in regard to adequate load securing, which is exposed to the inertia forces resulting from the movement of transport means. Regardless, the responsibility of individual entities in the process and the applicable insurance, the basic aspect to ensure transport safety is the correct securing of the cargo. In the article, the authors present elements of calculation models for different methods of securing cargo. Calculations were performed for the selected type of load on the specific semi-trailer meeting the requirements of the XL Code adapted for intermodal transport. The analysis of safety management in transport in the aspect of decision-making about the method of securing the cargo was also made.

Opis:: Transport of oversize cargo is a specific form of transport service. Specialised equipment is required for its implementation, while the number of people involved in the transport process itself is much higher than in the case of classic road transport form. This paper presents the problems related to permits and penalties that are used in the carriage of oversize cargo and the problems of transport safety in relation to the techniques of fixing oversize loads in road transport.

Opis:: During the transportation of goods, damage and destruction of the transported cargo constitute a very large part of the damage. The most common direct cause of damage is an improper arrangement and securing of the transported load. An improperly secured load may pose a threat to the transporters and bystanders. Incorrectly secured loads can fall from the vehicle, obstruct movement, and cause injury or death. In addition, improperly secured loads can cause injury or death in heavy braking or a collision. The way the load is distributed and secured on the vehicle can negatively affect driving behaviour, making it difficult to control the vehicle. This article presents the conditions related to the transport of loads in road transport, describes both the forces that act on the load during the journey of a vehicle and the most important techniques for securing loads in road transport.

Opis:: Shock absorbers in modern cars have asymmetric damping characteristics corrected by overflow valves. Their indicator diagrams are far from being elliptical. Defective shock absorbers may lead to excessive amplitudes in vibration accelerations, excessive car body rolls, both lateral and longitudinal, excessive braking distance and destruction of the car components or road surface. The paper discusses methods of testing shock absorbers mounted or removed from the car. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods are used as bas is for the assessment. It is pointed out that the methods should not assume linear characteristics of springs and damping elements. Testing methods can be divided as follows: - those referring to shock absorbers removed from the car, - those referring to shock absorbers mounted in the car. Methods used for testing shock absorbers removed from the car are those performed on indicator test rigs provided with mechanical-electric or electrohydraulic extortion system. Such test rigs have measuring devices to enable recording of indicator diagrams relative to the absorber damping force in function of piston stroke with deflection and reflection. Among a variety of testing methods, those requiring no removal are by far preferred by Vehicle Control Stations or diagnostic lines. The methods can be divided asfollows: -free vibration type, -forced vibration type.

Some methods of dimensioning traffic safety are proposed, especially geometrical methods that are useful in short-term traffic control.

Opis:: Author of this publication identifies safety requirements regarding maritime transport of dangerous goods class 1. Various modes of transport are used to hazardous materials that often include maritime transport of hazardous materials, such as explosives. Dangerous Goods’ refers to items that are potentially dangerous during transportation. The above paper is based of techniques in ship operations, as well as the desirability of having more comprehensive recommendations which included dangerous goods. Dangerous goods have special transport requirements to eliminate or minimize the risk of injuring people or damaging property and the environment. The Recommendations are aligned with relevant IMO codes and the IMDG Code in particular. The above article is based on the results of safety research on maritime transport of hazardous materials, as Sworn Expert of the Polish Chamber of Maritime Commerce.

Opis:: The work presented in this paper is the experimental study of square aluminum columns under dynamic axial impact loading. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of foam filling to the crushing behaviour of the columns. Four columns were tested, i.e. a single walled column, a single walled column filled with aluminum foam, a double walled column, and a double walled column filled with foam. The single walled column was 55 mm wide and 1.3 mm thick. The double walled column was prepared by inserting a square column of 38 mm wide and 1.15 mm thick inside the single walled column. The column was made of aluminum extruded alloy AA 6063 T1, and the insert material was the closed cell aluminum foam (ALPORAS) with density of 440 kg/m3. The tests were carried out using a dropped weight impact testing machine that had been built specifically for this purpose. The results showed that filling the aluminum foam to the columns increase their crushing resistance force, where the increase is of the singlewalled column is higher than that of the double-walled column. Filling the foam to the columns reduce the high crushing force peak for both columns as well. This experimental results confirm results of other researcher.

Opis:: In today's automotive industry, companies are organized into simultaneous engineering teams to develop their new products. The new way of doing business enables some companies to develop their new products quicker and cheaper with higher quality and reliability. In the past few years there has been the tendency to increase the safety of vehicles by introducing intelligent assistance systems that help the driver to cope with critical driving situations. These functions are characterized by the active control of the driving dynamics by distributed assistance systems, which therefore need a reliable communication network. The faults in the electronic components, which control these functions, are safety-critical. However, the assistance functions deliver only an add-on service in accordance with a fail-safe strategy for the electronic components. If there is any doubt about the correct behaviour of the assistance system, it will be switched off. For by-wire systems, without a mechanical back-up, a new dimension of safety requirements for automotive electronics is reached. After a fault the system has to be fail-tolerant until a safe state is reached. realizing that road vehicles, mostly commercial vehicles taking part over proportionally in accidents, become more and more complex indicates that suitable and adaptable analysis methods are crucial to be applied with appropriate certification body.

Opis:: Transport is one of the final stages in the sales of the produced batch. The authors conducted research on the basis of the comparative analysis based on selected manufacturing companies. Opis:: The paper discusses the need of additional equipment of trucks which are already being in use in Poland with the devices of the indirect visibility which enable to observe much bigger area in the neighbourhood of the vehicle. A large number of accidents are caused by drivers of larger vehicles who are not aware that other road users are very close to or beside their own vehicle. These accidents are often related to a change of direction at crossings, junctions or roundabouts, when drivers fail to detect other road users in the blind spots, which exist in the immediate area around their vehicles. The increase of the indirect visibility from the driver's seat improves safety of the participants in the road traffic. Over 400 people lost their life in the EU in of these accidents. Most of the victims of such accidents are pedestrians or two-wheelers, a particularly vulnerable category of road users. Implementation of the EU Directive 2003/97 (which is obligatory for the new vehicles) to the vehicles earlier registered can be done by replacement and installment of the new mirrors which contain bigger areas. This paper shows the results of the research on the independence of minimum dimensions (s, w) of mirrors class V and its placement on values of radius of curvature. It contains much bigger area than it is due to demands. Author also made a proposition on how to solve the problem of the limited visibility on the inclined crossing of roads and on enlarged crossing while turning left.

Opis:: Knowledge of the improved management of traffic flows and its effect on road safety is an important component in the process of sustainable road network development. Having in mind the fact that so many road traffic casualties occur, a key priority in European Transport Policy is making Europe's highways as safe as possible. The mentioned objective is attained by means of sustainable safety. The various traffic models, developed on the base of the characteristics of different road users and their often conflicting requirements, have a vital role in the mentioned process. This paper investigates the applicability of existing traffic flow models in the efforts to achieve sustainable safe road traffic. This characteristic is limited, because these models are based, primarily, on traffic conditions of cars or motorized vehicles of similar characteristics. The aim of the paper is to contribute to sustainable safe road traffic, emphasizing the need to develop the models which must be taken into account of the users of different transport modes having conflicting requirements.

Opis:: A vehicle hitting a traffic barrier creates a major threat to traffic safety as a result of displacement of components of the barrier by the forces transferred from the vehicle. We built a theoretical model of the dynamics of such processes and behaviour of concrete barriers set on various types of surfaces. We calculated the displacement as a function of vehicle impact energy and barrier base. We completed analytical approximation for our calculations and we referred the theoretical results to experimental test results. This validated our model of barrier and vehicle movement dynamics as fully qualified for use in the planning of safer barriers and evaluation of barrier effect on traffic. Basing on our calculations, we determined that a second-order polynomial can be used for describing the lateral displacement of a barrier placed on various types of surfaces for a wide range of impact energies (actually, from O to 120 kJ). The courses of the approximating function represent an efficient model for determining the maximum lateral displacement of a concrete barrier on impact of a B or C segment vehicle.
