    The main target of research in this article is the ballads by Mickiewicz Czaty (The watch), Trzech Budrysów (The three brothers Budrys) in comparison with the ballads by Pushkin Воевода (The waywode) and Будрыс и его сыновья (Budrys and his sons). In particular, there have been compared the artistic specific features of the mentioned works, the role of opposition, the role of ethnic flavour in their structure, language features, peculiarities of rhythm system and stanzaic prosody, functions of aposiopesis, rhetorical questions and exclamations and etc. When finding out the common and the different between the ballads by Mickiewicz and Pushkin, the author of the article points up the difference between the original and the translation. The type of these differences testifies, that the ballads The waywode and Budrys and his sons mediate between the translation and the original creative work and can be considered an independent interpretation of the ballads by Mickiewicz. It becomes apparent especially well in the text of Pushkin’s ballad The waywode.

    This paper will seek to test two methodologies theorizing about translating children’s literature, one of which can be termed as the first theory in this field, shaped by Göte Klingberg and the other, polemical to the first one, introduced by Ritta Oittinen. On the example of children’s classic, Peter Pan and Wendy, it will be argued if the both methodologies allow the analysis of children’s literature translation and can justify most of the changes made by translators.

    The author analyses the interpreting techniques used by Adam Pomorski in his translation of Black Man by Sergey Yesenin. It becomes obvious that the Polish interpreter used traditional methods of text translation, not always keeping the formal, semantic, and stylistic structure of the original text. So, in his version Pomorski emphasized the presence of a second author-creator, i.e. himself, and left traces of his interpreting initiative in almost every line, amplifying translation, introducing unmotivated inversions, using archaic and modernized lexis. Due to such a pretentious manner of Pomorski’s translation the reader received the text which doesn’t always remind Yesenin’s original lines.

    Some hermeneutical notes on the biblical Psalms The article examines two difficult to interpret verses from the Book of Psalms. The analysis compares the Hebrew text, the Septuagint, the Old Bulgarian text (along with its Church Slavonic version) and the Modern Bulgarian synodical translation of the psalms. The proposed reading is based on linguistic, literary and theological observations. In the first analysed verse (Ps. 4:2), semantic illegibility is interpreted as a result of the implicit presence of a specific Hebraism in the translations. In the other case (Ps. 5:9), verbal expression is highly elliptical because of the preference given to the phonetic structure of the verse in the Hebrew original. Hermeneutyczne uwagi o biblijnych PsalmachArtykuł prezentuje dwie różne interpretacje wersów pochodzących z biblijnej Księgi Psalmów. Autorka porównuje przekłady Psalmów, pochodzące z tekstu hebrajskiego, Septuaginty, tekstu starobułgarskiego (wraz z jego cerkiewnosłowiańską wersją) oraz z pierwszego nowobułgarskiego przekładu synodalnego. Zaproponowane odczytanie uwzględnia perspektywę językoznawczą, literaturoznawczą i teologiczną. W pierwszym analizowanym wersie (Ps 4,2) semantyczna nieczytelność jest interpretowana jako wynik bezpośredniej obecności specyficznego hebraizmu w komentowanych przekładach. W innym przypadku (Ps 5,9) ekspresja słowna jest niezwykle eliptyczna z powodu zastosowania obecnej w hebrajskim oryginale fonetycznej struktury wersu.

    Artykuł jest próbą spojrzenia na staropolskie strategie translatorskie w świetle oceny wczesnorenesansowej pracy przekładowej anonimowego tłumacza jednego z mniej znanych dzieł Erazma z Rotterdamu pt. Lingua. Treść rozprawy koncentruje się nie tylko na wskazaniu i omówieniu metod tłumaczenia, ale przede wszystkim odsłonięciu na przykładzie jednego zaledwie wątku sposobów myślenia obu autorów, estetyki słowa, kultury i pragmatyki transponowania zasobów erudycyjnych, wreszcie – dialogu międzykulturowego, jaki bez wątpienia otwiera każda konfrontacja oryginału z przekładem.
    The study attempts to look at Old Polish translation strategies in the light of the evaluation of the early Renaissance translation work by an anonymous translator of one of Erasmus’ lesser-known works, Lingua. The article focuses not only on indicating and discussing the methods of translation, but above all on revealing – on the example of one plot – the thinking procedures of both authors, the aesthetics of words, the culture and pragmatics of transposing erudite resources, and finally – the intercultural dialogue that undoubtedly opens up every confrontation of the original with translation.

    Статья посвящена популярному на протяжении всего XVIII столетия “Вертоградцу света” – памятнику русской письменности, переведенному с итальянского языка без указания оригинала в начале 1730-х годов Петром Сафроновым. Как удалось установить, это перевод сочинения Idea del Giardino del Mondo врача и писателя из Равенны Томаззо Томаи (1-е издание 1582).
    The paper focuses on an unpublished manuscript known as “Vertogradets Sveta”, a translation from Italian carried out in the early 1730s by Pyotr Safonov. The translation was extremely popular throughout the 18th century. However, the name of the Italian author has not been known to the Russian readers. It is only now that the source of the text has been identified.

    Opis:
    The object of the analysis is the so-called Szczecin episode in its many variants. The episode plays a significant role in interpreting the novel Too Loud a Solitude, the Czech version of which is a source text for a number of foreign translations. As such, the episode creates space for specific translation operations that are possible in some languages (e.g. Polish and German), while impossible in other.
    Štětínská epizoda se nachází ve všech variantách Hrabalova textu, který se nejčastěji nazývá Příliš hlučná samota. V některých z nich se liší v drobnostech, pouze ve verzi nazvané Kluby poezie čtenář nachází možnou, ve smyslu literárních možných světů, motivaci hrdinovy cesty do Štětína, která se v reálném světě ukazuje jako ne úplně pravdivá. Epizoda se dostavuje v alkoholickém opojení a jedná se v ní to, že hrdina díla šlápl do psích výkalů, což mělo za následek podstatný zlom v jeho životě. Hrdina tvrdí, že po dvaceti letech se mu na bleším trhu ve Štětíně podařilo najít znečištěnou ponožku, jakož i zneuctěný sandál. To vše činí překladatelům tohoto díla po polštiny a němčiny možnost uskutečnit takové operace překladatelské, resp. translatologické, které se nikdy nevyskytnou v překladech do jinných cizích jazyků.

    Autorka stawia pytanie o nieprzekładalność „absolutną”, czyli o to, co nie dociera do obcojęzycznego odbiorcy translacji. Na podstawie albumu o zabytkach kultury polskiej przechowywanych w Bibliotece Narodowej w Warszawie, w wersji angielskiej tłumaczonej z polskiego oryginału i mogącej służyć za wzór znakomitego przekładu, ukazuje, jak teksty odnoszące się do sztuki narodowej mogą zawierać takie pułapki dla tłumacza. Mimo doskonałego wykonania przekładu, u docelowego odbiorcy z innego kręgu kulturowego tłumaczenie nie wywołuje tych samych reakcji na specyficzne, inherentne wartości  tekstu pierwotnego, doznawanych przez czytelników należących do społeczności kulturowej tekstu wyjściowego.
    The author asks whether there is such a thing as “absolute” untranslatability. In other words, do situations occur in which the full translatability of a text is prevented no matter how good the translation and how skilful the translator? She examines the English translation of a volume on national heirlooms, items of Polish heritage preserved in the National Library in Warsaw. This translation may be regarded as a benchmark for quality, yet it turns out that recipients not belonging to the Polish cultural milieu will not be able to respond emotionally in the same way as natives to the cultural values inherent in the original text.

    Opis:
    This paper is devoted to the Polish translation of the 16th-century work by Justus Lipsius, entitled De Constantia. The translation was made by the Voivod of Vitebsk Andrzej Kazimierz Kryszpin-Kirszensztein in 1698. When studying Kryszpin's documents in the 18th century, Gedeon Jeleński found a manuscript entitled Stateczność umysłu albo Nauka polityczna o statecznej cierpliwości podczas złych czasów [Constancy of the mind or a political lesson in balanced patience during unfavourable times]. As there were no other hints or indications concerning the authorship of the text, it was credited to Kryszpin. Thus, mistakenly recognized as the original, the work was published by Franciszek Bohomolec in 1769. The author of the paper analyses the principles that Kirsztensztein adopted in the introduction to the manuscript, where he presented how difficult it was to write the text and where he argued that writing it was possible owing to his vast expertise in Antique literature. The techniques that Kryszpin used to keep under cover the relationship between his work and its Latin source are discussed, as are the strategies of how Kryszpin deluded the reader into thinking that his thought was original. The paper ends with an appendix containing Kryszpin's foreword to the reader. This text unveils Kryszpin's clear intention to have the text published. The paper also discusses a selection of remarks on Kryszpin's attitude towards the source text. The preliminary analysis ventured by the author seems to indicate that Kryszpin-Kirszensztein's work is a paraphrase, a vast summary, and a descriptive analysis of Lispius's work and that the two works stay in a relatively loose aesthetic and compositional connection. The closest bond between the two texts obtains on the level of main ideas and thoughts.
