    В статье впервые всесторонне изучено русское классическое искусство на сцене профессионального украинского национального театра "Русская Бесида" с момента его основания до Первой мировой войны (1864–1914). В статье рассказывается о переводчиках драматургии М. Гоголя, О. Островского, Л. Толстого, М. Горького, А. Чехова, датах премьеров, режиссеров и актерской труппы. На основании тогдашних обзоров в статье проанализировано значение иностранной драмы для развития украинского театрального искусства в Галиции.
    It the article is comprehensively explored for the first time the Russian classical plays on the stage of the professional Ukrainian National Theater of «The Ruska Besida» Circle from the moment of its foundation to the First World War (1864–1914). It tells about the translators of the dramaturgy of M. Gogol, O. Ostrovsky, L. Tolstoy, M. Gorky, A. Chekhov, dates of premieres, directors, and acting troupe. Based on the reviews of that time in the article is analyzed the significance of foreign drama for the development of Ukrainian theatrical art in Galicia.
    W artykule po raz pierwszy wszechstronnie zgłębiono rosyjskie sztuki klasyczne na scenie profesjonalnego Ukraińskiego Teatru Narodowego Towarzystwo «Ruska Besida» od momentu jego powstania do I wojny światowej (1864–1914). Opowiada o tłumaczach dramaturgii M. Gogola, O. Ostrowskiego, L. Tołstoja, M. Gorkiego, A. Czechowa, datach premier, reżyserów i trupy aktorskiej. Na podstawie ówczesnych recenzji w artykule przeanalizowano znaczenie dramatu obcego dla rozwoju ukraińskiej sztuki teatralnej w Galicji.

    India’s rejection of Macmillan’s English Classics series constitutes an important counter-origin that exposes and dismantles underlying assumptions about how colonial Indian readers valued and consumed Shakespeare. In this paper, I examine the failure of Macmillan’s English Classics series to bring about Indian assimilation to British values. I specifically consider Kenneth Deighton’s Shakespeare editions in the series and argue that Deighton’s Shakespeare attempted to utilize its extensive explanatory notes as a primer on Englishness for Indians. The pedantic notes, as well as the manner in which the texts were appropriated into Indian educational systems, were determining factors in their ultimate failure to gain widespread popularity in the colony. The imperial agenda that insists upon one dominant, valid discourse led to Macmillan misreading the market and misreading an already viable field of Shakespeare studies in India. Reflecting on narratives and histories surrounding the origins of Shakespeare studies in India, as well as how Shakespeare’s works were produced for the colonies and the way in which they were duly rejected, reveals how exchanges of power and capital between metropole and colony shape Western systems just as heavily as they do others.

    An overview — even cursory — of literary culture in Lithuania in the first decades of the nineteenth century indicates there were many people who pursued poetry writing. According to Piotr Chmielowski, such a phenomenon did not exist then to this extent and with such intensity in any other part of Poland’s territory. As proof, in one of his works, he lists more than seventy names of poets who in the years 1815– –1822 had their poetry printed on the pages of journals published at the time. This number, certainly, does not fully reflect the scale of the said phenomenon. It should be noted that young people strove for a place on local poetry Parnassus, for example, also through parlor readings or through entries in memory books. Those young poets were often satisfied with minor, fleeting poems, handed from one person to another, without hope of the fruits of their poetic labor appearing on the pages of periodical press. Unfortunately, few of these poets possessed “talent above the mediocrity”, hence few manged to impress their audience. The paper aims to present selected views of contemporary audience concerning the poetry as its members also made an attempt at evaluation of the poems and aesthetic valorisation of the authors’ talent.
