The subject of analysis are – various images, views, perceptions, meanings and interpretations of the countryside and towns in Europe. The terms, words and notions used in the description have a character of historical and spatial relations. The author compares the views of towns and countryside from the beginning of industrial era to nowadays. Examples quoted in the article and situations described by literature, also expressed in sociological, economical papers, as well as in popular opinions, have showed the changing statements in the matter. She draws the attention to the strong points of the village and the rural community. The statements in which towns (metropolitan areas) are considered the “natural” and the only direction for the social development are discussed in the paper.

Tekst jest próbą syntetycznego ujęcia problemu polskiego mieszkalnictwa XX wieku, w nałożeniu się nań modernizmu w architekturze, a zgodnie z polską specyfiką łącząc dodatkowo nową architekturę z na nowo zaistniałym państwem po długim czasie jego nieistnienia. Rozważania rozgrywają się w trzech okresach: międzywojnia, czasów PRL-u i współczesności po roku 1989, czyli czasu po upadku rządów totalitarnych w Europie Wschodniej.
This essey is the trial of the treating the problem of polish housing in XX century. We have here the example of phenomenon of joining the architectural modernism with regaining the independence by polish state after more than hundred years of dependence from the strange powers. Our reflections treat on three periods: the interwar, “The Polish Peoples” Republic and the time after the year 1989, or the fall of totalitarian rules in east Europe.

The article is an interpretation of the novel Ciemno, prawie noc (It’s dark, almost night) by Joanna Bator. It focuses on the specific vision of Wałbrzych, a real city located in the South of Poland. The vision consists of many traditional and present-day patterns entitled to create spatial images. In her novel, Bator examines methods of presenting urban spaces in literature which leads her to constructing a representation of a non-town. Destruction of the emotional sphere of the human personality (the case of the narrator – main character) damages the possibility of habituating the sphere of existence (home, quarter, town, province).

Praca odnosi się do roli, jaką odegrali Żydzi w dziejach Ostrołęki. Historia Żydów ostrołęckich to zaledwie 140 lat – od zezwolenia zaborczych władz pruskich na wejście do miasta do nakazu okupacyjnych władz hitlerowskich, by opuścili Ostrołękę. Historia ta ma jednak własną specyfikę i swoisty koloryt.
The articule refers to the role of Jews in the history of Ostrołęka. It is only 140 years of the Jewish history in this town – from the permission of the annexationist Prussian authorities to enter the town until the order of occupational Nazi authorities to leave Ostrołęka. However, the history of Jews has its own specificity and peculiar tone.

Ostrów Tumski is a part of the islands group in the Old Town in Wroclaw. There valuable monuments of architecture as well as interesting gardens set, mainly baroque, are situated. During siege of Wroclaw in 1945 year this area of the city was considerably destroyed. After the war the most valuable monu-ments were successfully rebuild, but "Bishops gardens" was revaluated only in 1999-2003 years. This set is situated in the back of Southern frontage of Katedralna street - main street leading to the Cathedra. The object consisted of the complex of gardens near the Bishops Palace and gardens of canonical court. It was small geometrically planned out garden, situated general on two levels declining in direction of river, with downstairs, balustrades and stone flowerpots sculptures. No elements of ancient lay out arrangements in general is preserved and only in some cases it was possible to apply the formula of reconstruction. In design and executive works the companies and person organized into associations "Ogrody Dolnoslqskie" took part. Present the "Bishops gardens" became one of the most attractive walking places of Tumski Ostrdw visited by occupants of Wroctaw willingly. The gardens particularly interestingly presenting when looking at them from tower of the Cathedral.

Opis:
The evolution of barriers in the cityscape, from city walls to hedges, proves that their forms depend on structure, appearance and function. The article describes and generally systematizes the trellis fences selected from Wrocław area. The inventories presented in text give an evidence of different forms represented by the metal barriers, illustrating the changing tastes of city residents. The article describes barriers that were classified as unique, interesting or typical of various historical periods. Compatibility between fence and adjacent architecture is usually enhanced by using similar materials, details and proportions.

In the 20s and 30s of the previous century a trend to found recreation towns existed. These were separated settlement units around big cities. Clearly precised functioning - spatial rules for those sets created harmonious settlement units in the suburban zone of huge centres. At that time in the area of Łodź several of such places were found, on all main transport routes which led out of the city. The urbanization processes of the last few dozen years dimmed the boundary of the city, suburban zone and separate settlement units. City - gardens as former settlement units, surrounded by others, separate and accidental sets of summer houses, mansions and other types of buildings were lost in structures and connections.

Opis:
One of the most important consequences of the design relating to human behavior is to facilitate or to discourage contacts between people. The method of shaping of the physical space can affect the way of the social space use. The concept of an interactional space corresponds to a holistic approach of place in which a set of spatial-physical attributes assisting social contacts in a particular location creates a appropriate situation for social contacts. The interactional nature of public spaces in the city is affected by several functional, structural and aesthetic factors of the environment. The presented paper describes these factors and shows on selected examples how they are used in the analysis of interactive features of public space.

The article shows new Dutch urban realizations based on the VINeX strategy. It includes the descriptions of the new Amsterdam housing estates – Borneo Sporenburg and IJburg, Rotterdam urban intervention – The red Apple building, as well as minor scale investments called urban activators – Theater Podium Grotekerkplein and pedestrian tunnel under the Wilhelminaplein square. Quoted examples, diverse in scale – from urban to strictly architectural, are the models of newest landscape design tendencies. Scope and subject-matter of the land revision enables to assert that both – new urban and cultural landscapes – are designed simultanously in The Netherlands. looking at transformed and artificial landscape of Holland, one can understand the need of its restoration or from the start design. New largescale urban investments in The Netherlands are outstanding examples of hi-density housing structures and are worth paying attention to.

Autor prezentuje wyniki badań społecznych z wybranymi mieszkańcami Nowego Stawu na Pomorzu. To małe miasto, które po upadku przemysłu w latach 80. i 90. XX w. poszukuje rozwiązań na wyjście z kryzysu. Badania przeprowadzone w latach 2017 i 2018 dowiodły, że mieszkańcy borykają się nie tylko z brakiem miejsc pracy, ale także z innymi problemami, takimi jak: zdegradowane tereny miejskie, brak miejsc publicznego wypoczynku, dostęp do usług i in. Miasto podejmuje działania naprawcze polegające na szeroko zakrojonej rewitalizacji i rewaloryzacji tkanki miejskiej i pozyskiwaniu inwestorów. W zamierzeniach, oprócz poprawy jakości przestrzeni, ma to stanowić asumpt do rozwiązywania problemów społecznych i spowodować powrót do czasów świetności miasta. W tym kontekście interesującym problemem badawczym wydaje się odbiór społeczny zarysowanych przemian.
The author presents the results of a survey conducted among selected inhabitants of Nowy Staw in Pomerania, a small town, which – after the collapse of industry in the 1980s and the 1990s – is looking for solutions to overcome the socio-economic crisis. Research has shown that the most serious problems faced by the residents, are not only the lack of jobs, but also degraded urban areas, lack of public rest areas, access to services and other facilities. The town undertakes remedial actions, involving extensive revitalization and revalorization of the urban tissue, to attract new investors. Beside improving the quality of space, this is to be the beginning of solving social problems and bringing back the times of town’s development. In this context, social perception of the outlined changes by the small town community seems to offer an interesting research problem.

Mutual relations of towns and rivers is closely connected to the research project elaborated by us entitled: "Transformations town-village and village-town as a shaping factor for cultural landscape". The project includes questions connected with places which are located on the lower stages of the settlement network which are often called downgraded towns. This group includes small towns and villages which descend from larger towns. They used to be selfsufficient units at one time but now are absorbed by nearby cities or connected, creating new cities by joining two or more units. In Lower Silesia region and in neighbourhood areas, the number of such places is quite high, many of them lost their city rights directly after the war in 1945, and while a large number of them retracted those rights, others play the part of commune villages and very few are administrative units (so called "sołectwo"). To present the questions of mutual relations between small towns and the river, the most likely representative places for the whole set were chosen, which at the same time illustrate the influence of the river on historical and modern architecture, and present advantages and threats originated from the neighbourhood of water,and also on shaping of a landscape where river, lake, pool or even a small watercourse or water basin are essential factors. The chosen places were divided into two basic groups - Low-lying, along the course of the Odra river. In mountain areas, in Kłodzko Land and in the Czech Republic. Surface water can in various ways influence the attractiveness of the place where they exist. Near big rivers there is a possibility of organizing river harbours for touristic movements which connect separate places along the river. Appropriate management of river banks which run through separate places can increase the area of terrains intended for leisure and recreation (embankments along the river).

In the article entitled "Phenom-enological method of town landscape researching" according to the author the landscape has been researched for the means of its suitability for intended actions which so far have resulted in a choice of specific research tools and techniques. The whole of the landscape as a uniform body has not been researched because of its complicated and dynamic structure. Phenomenological method of landscape researching is a step in the direction of entire landscape research. Urban landscape, because of its external and internal configuration, densification, mobility and changeability of scenery requires diversification of research methods. In the article it was stressed that phenomenological method of landscape researching can be an effective method all the more that nowadays a description of the town is mainly its functional description not a formal one. A functional description was a characteristic one for town-planning from the previous century when a strict connection of function and form was acknowledged. Earlier town-planning dealt with the form of a town. Functional description could operate with a calibrated view as a basic record, spatially differentiating individual functions assigned to particular town districts. A formal description can not be limited to the view, it will tend to turn to recording techniques elaborated in history for the record of a spatial systems form. The author draws the readers attention to the fact that a superficial glance at carried out town landscape views allows us to state the foreground of all full views which defines traffic and infrastructure operating in it. The second plan is architectonic elevations, monuments, trees and far views. The third plan is buildings and shape of their crowns with the sky as a background. These plans are mostly layered with parallel bands whose height defines the centre of the view orientating vision. The number of views, even in residential parts of a town is limited by density of the urban space and unattractiveness, fortuity of town-planning compositions. In perspective, having deeply researched carried out views, a chance appears to receive interesting results.
