Opis:
The major goal of this study is to determine the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the tissues and bones of Red Hybrid Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) taken from two distinct sites in Terengganu state, Malaysia, namely Kijal and Paka. Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb)were the metals examined. Soil analysis also was carried out for the same elements. The tissues and bones of the fishes were separated before further analysis was made. Drying process technique was used to determine the moisture content for all samples at 80°C for 24 hours. Water content ranged between 70 & 77%. Triplicate samples were evaluated by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) to find out heavy metals concentration. Oven and Teflon beakers were used to fully digest all solid samples at 120oC for 3 hours. Highest readings of Zn, Ni and Pb were found in the fish bone for the samples collected from both mentioned locations. However, different pattern was noticed for Cu where higher values were found in the tissues for the same samples. Values of Pb in the tissues were higher than the acceptable value in edible fish by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); 1 ppm and Malaysian Food Act (MFR) & World Health Organization (WHO); 2 ppm, whereas values of Cu, Zn were in the acceptable range set by the same organizations. No values recommended for Ni by MFR. In general heavy metals in the bones and tissues from both locations can be sorted in descending order as follows; Pb>Zn>Cu>Ni. Soil samples collected from both locations showed different pattern where high concentration was found for Zn followed by Pb then Cu and Ni. Moreover analysis for soil samples collected from Paka River showed higher content for all elements compared to Kijal. More investigation is needed to clarify whether this contamination is solely from industry or due to geology of the area.

Opis:
This research aims to determine the composition of the best filter media on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) production performance. The method used in this research is experimental methods use Completely Randomized Design (CRD), which consist of four variables and three replications. The variable used is (A) without media filter (Control); (B) combination of cotton, bio ball and charcoal; (C) combination of cotton bioring and charcoal; (D) combination of cotton, Japanese matt and charcoal. The test fish used 180 tilapia fish with 7-9 cm length size. Tanks that used measured 60 cm x 30 cm x 36 cm as many as 12 pieces. The density during the research was 15 tails per tank. Duration of maintenance is 40 days. The feeding level is given by 5% of fish body weight. Water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, and nitrate) were observed every 10 days for 40 days. Other parameters are survival rate, absolute length and weight growth, specific growth rate and feed convertion ratio observed every 7 days for 40 days. The results showed that the best composition of filter media for tilapia production performance was combination of cotton, bioball, and charcoal. Tilapia production performance obtained a combination of cotton filter media, bioball, and charcoal with 100% survival rate, length growth 2.17 cm, weight growth of 9.91 g, and specific growth rate of 2.3% and feed conversion ratio of 1.88.

Opis:
This research conducted to determine the optimum water current models for growth performance and survival rate of tilapia fingerlings (O. niloticus) in circular tanks. The method used in this research is Completely Randomized Design (CRD), which consists of three treatments and four replications. The treatments are circular tanks without water current (control), circular tanks with 0.1 m s-1 water current and circular tanks that combine 0.1 m s-1 water current with venturi aeration. Tilapia fingerlings were kept in circular tanks with 30 cm diameter and 37 cm of height, with water level of 30 cm. 50 fingerlings with size of 2-3 cm were reared in every circular tank. The feed is given 3 times daily with a feeding rate of 5% from biomass. Absolute growth rate, specific growth rate, survival rate, feed conversion ratio and feed efficiency were observed every ten days, while water quality was assessed weekly. After 42 days of rearing, the results showed that the 0,1 m s-1 water current combined with venturi aeration had the highest dissolved oxygen level (6.5-7.3 mg L-1), the lowest ammonia levels (0.15-0.20 mg L-1), 92% survival rate, 1.17 g absolute growth rate, 3.65% specific growth rate, 1.3 feed convertion ratio and 77.8% feed efficiency.
