    The article deals with the subject of searching the nature of the consecrated virginity in the Church. This analysis is based on the theological and liturgical aspects defined by Ordo Consecrationis Virginum and Ordo Professionis Religiosae. Therefore we take the assumption that the most appropriate criterion of its interpretation in the Christian reality can be found in the principle: lex orandi – lex credendi. From this perspective the consecrated virginity is perceived as positive reality as far as faith celebration is concerned. The liturgy describes virginity as a gift offered to man by God’s people. Faith is also a prize and through the liturgy it is able reach its highest point. Virginity glorified in the Christian reality becomes a present as well as it is not only connected with but also filled with faith. Virginity consecrated under liturgical circumstances gains both ontological and dynamic features typical of worship. This sequentially allows to understand that virginity is not simply the result of ascetic effort, nor it is the physical adornment of a believer. In fact it spreads on the whole person who is being revived by sacraments. It makes them improve by personal commitment marking their route through the history of salvation.

    Many postulates are put against the contemporary theology. The most important among them are learning of a high level and pastoral care. On the one hand, there is postulated that theology must be careful, systematic and organized in terms of scientific knowledge. It comes in this case to a clear determination of its nature and methods that constitute every field of research as a science, and then to a consequent sticking to the chosen methods. A supplementary postulate concerns such a scientific doing theology, which allows to specify its position compared to other sciences. On the other hand, a postulate is formulated that theology is supposed to have higher level of pastoral care. It is a postulate that appears almost commonly in circles associated with the formation of priests. This is understandable, since theological studies have to prepare for the pastoral care service. The circles of secular theology students speak rather about the “practicality” of theology, although it is in fact the same. The postulates mentioned above are discussed in this article on the basis of reflection on the subject of theology, its nature and method, also on some theological lecture contents and on the spiritual quality of this lecture. There is paid particular attention to possibilities of pastoral theology, but formulated under explicit scientific criterion.
     Pod adresem współczesnej teologii stawia się wiele postulatów. Najważniejszymi z nich są naukowość i pastoralność. Z jednej więc strony postuluje się, by teologia była staranna, systematyczna i uporządkowana pod względem naukowości. Chodzi w tym przypadku o jasne określenie jej natury i metody, które konstytuują każdą dziedzinę badawczą jako naukę, a potem konsekwentne kierowanie się wypracowaną metodą. Postulat uzupełniający dotyczy takiego naukowego uprawiania teologii, które pozwoli określić jej miejsce w stosunku do innych nauk. Z drugiej strony formułuje się postulat większej pastoralności teologii. Pojawia się on niemal powszechnie w kręgach związanych z formacją kapłańską. Jest to zrozumiałe, ponieważ studia teologii mają przygotować do pełnienia posługi duszpasterskiej. W kręgach świeckich studentów teologii mówi się raczej o „praktyczności” teologii, chociaż w gruncie rzeczy chodzi o to samo. W niniejszym artykule zostają omówione wspomniane tutaj postulaty na gruncie refleksji nad przedmiotem teologii, jej naturą i metodą, nad niektórymi treściami wykładu teologicznego oraz nad jakością duchową tego wykładu. Szczególna uwaga zostaje zwrócona na możliwości pastoralne teologii, ale formułowane w świetle wyraźnego przyjmowania kryterium jej naukowości.

    This article raises the question of the mutual relation between theology and prayer. Theology is knowledge about God – the Holiest – and should carry out research in a holy manner, contributing to the holiness of the person who is connected with theology as a teacher or a student. The question of the relation between theology and prayer belongs to the most fundamental issues concerning the method of theology to which we should constantly refer as to an important source of guidelines for today. This article first focuses on certain statements which appeared in the past centuries and which discussed the relation between theology and prayer, trying to find the adequate approach to the spiritual and scientific situation in the field of theology in those times. After this introduction, it presents the view that prayer may be used in service of theology. Theology, on the other hand, in its full and traditional sense, is total and complete only then, when it constitutes the foundation of piety and leads to prayer. Theology through prayer can permeate the inner life opening itself to the state when we belong to God who resides in our heart.

    Theology has always required to have its raison d’ệtre justified. This was particularly visible when universities began to emerge, the reflection on a scientific method was developed and new fields of study appeared. Even St Thomas Aquinas understood the need to legalize theology as a science. He was very scrupulous about it and paid attention to the methodological coherence. Since a man has been seeking salvation the necessity for science showing the way towards it evolved as well.Despite the different cultural circumstances and the modified concept of a science a question reappears. If a contemporary man is as sensitive as possible, the answer should be provided together with the challenges that our faith is to meet.This article proves that the validity of theology can be done within three existential areas that a human being is interested in. These include searching for meaning, freedom and wisdom. It is absolutely true that we need a science which will help us reach this goal. Notwithstanding theology is the best way to accomplish it.

    Sacred music acts as a service for liturgy and is in fact the service for faith mysteries. So if you want to say something reasonable from a theological point of view on the theme: sacred music, its elements and ways of manifestation you have to begin with understanding of the mystery in the faith of the Church and in the theology. This article treats therefore of the mentioned above. In this way there is emphasized that if you talk about sacred music you can speak about it only on the basis of faith in the mystery thus creating the right spiritual climate in which the music can be experienced and further creatively developed.There is paid particular attention to the issue of worship being the appropriate environment to use sacred music and the reference point for its creation. The point is the music is supposed to serve in deeper experiencing of faith mysteries in worship. The final conclusion is as follows: the mystery, whose sacred music is in fact on service, is the mystery of „spirit and truth” (Jn 4, 23). If sacred music subordinates to spirit and truth of the faith mystery and does not treat itself as another reality, the music will be always open to the mystery realizing its the most appropriate function to lead a man to joy in God, whose fullness is achieved in an attitude of adoration.

    Although Christianity is not “a religion of the book” in the common understanding of this expression, however the Bible constitutes its support, programme and verifying criterion. That is why over the centuries the text of the Bible was always scrupulously enshrined and transferred. This article focuses on the subject of how the optimal text of the Bible was searched for at the University of Paris in 13th century. The advent of universities and a new character of theology as a scientific study created a need for a proper text of the Bible, the same for everyone and easily available. Thus the academic necessity rapidly increased the popularity of the biblical text but also prompted the need of its correction. The study was a difficult task, but the problems were soon overcome. The final version of the text satisfied the scholars and met the criteria of the ecclesiastical tradition. Concurrently a lot of significant theoretical reflections emerged which affected the profound understanding of the nature of the biblical text and the ways of its interpretation. These achievements appeared to be valuable in centuries to come and the numerous conclusions drawn in 13th century remain relevant even today.
    Chociaż chrześcijaństwo nie jest „religią księgi” w potocznym rozumieniu tego określenia, to jednak księga Pisma Świętego stanowi jej oparcie, program i kryterium weryfikujące. Dlatego też w ciągu wieków zawsze starannie dbano o to, by tekst biblijny był odpowiednio przechowywany i przekazywany. W tym artykule zwracamy uwagę na to, w jaki sposób poszukiwano optymalnego tekstu Biblii na uniwersytecie w Paryżu w XIII wieku. Powstanie uniwersytetów i nadanie naukowego charakteru teologii sprawiło, że powstał problem przygotowania odpowiedniego tekstu biblijnego, jednakowego dla wszystkich i łatwo dostępnego. Potrzeba akademicka szybko wpłynęła więc na popularyzację tekstu biblijnego oraz na potrzebę jego skorygowania. Proces opracowania nie był łatwy, ale mimo powstających trudności dość szybko z nim się uporano. Wypracowano tekst, który w końcu zarówno zadowalał uczonych, jak i spełniał kryteria tradycji eklezjalnej. Przy okazji pojawiło się wiele ważnych refleksji teoretycznych, które wpłynęły na pogłębione rozumienie natury tekstu biblijnego oraz na sposoby jego interpretacji. Z tych doświadczeń korzystano w kolejnych wiekach, a wiele wniosków, które wyprowadzono w XIII wieku, zachowuje swoją aktualność do dnia dzisiejszego.

    This study focuses on two issues, namely: the issue of the contemplative character of theology (it deals with the nature of theology), and the question of how other academic disciplines – especially anthropological ones – may contribute to theology. The latter is an attempt to point out certain possible interdisciplinary applications of theology, and to open to the subject of its study and to the formulated proposals concerning particularly understanding of man and his life on earth. The issue of a contemplative character of theology, deeply rooted in its own history, has to struggle today with two phenomena: anthropological reductionism and the preference given to action. The question then arises: why cannot such tendencies be accepted uncritically? Contemporary theology faces a serious challenge because it has to include in its study a positive contribution made by humanities for understanding of man. However, a question may be asked: how to take advantage of the achievements of these disciplines so that the theological reflection may preserve its specific character and serve a deeper understanding of faith and its essence.

    Problematyka dotycząca ciała na pewno należy do najbardziej aktualnych we współczesnej kulturze, a tym samym także teologia musi ją uwzględniać w swoich poszukiwaniach, jeśli ma uczestniczyć w tym, co najbardziej zasadnicze dla człowieka. Tradycja teologiczna zwraca uwagę, że także postać Maryi, szczególnie Jej dziewictwo, zawsze wpływała na pogłębione rozumienie ciała i jego przeznaczenia, a tym samym na osobowe i moralne odniesienie do niego. Wobec współczesnej, pilnej potrzeby odbudowania godności ciała zachodzi m.in. wyraźna potrzeba powrotu do kultu maryjnego i do naśladowania cnót Maryi, ponieważ w tej perspektywie można uchwycić i właściwie kształtować relacje między duchem i ciałem, między mężczyzną i kobietą, a tym samym oddziaływać na kulturę, czyniąc ją bardziej przyjazną człowiekowi.
    The question concerning human body certainly can be counted among the most urgent issues in the modern culture. Therefore theology as well has to include it among the fields of its research if it wants to participate in a most vital discussion for contemporary man. Theological tradition focuses upon the figure of Mary, and especially on Her virginity, emphasising that She has always ameliorated the profound understanding of the body and its destiny and concurrently its personal and moral context. In the face of contemporary, urgent need for the restoration of the dignity of the bodythe return to Marian devotion and following Her virtues is definitely required. Only in this perspective it is possible to grsap and properly cultivate the relation between the body and the soul and further between man and woman, and by the same token to influence the culture making it more friendly for people.

    In modern theology once again there is a lively interest in a category of beauty. Today it is often said that theology should follow the “way of beauty”. The strength of beauty stems from the fact that it has a very special character and that it is connected with a remarkable cogency. Undoubtedly, theology taking an aesthetic point of view is much more definite and influential. Among the introductory questions that should be answered while discussing this kind of theology I would suggest taking a closer look at the changes that occurred down the centuries in the understanding of a relation between creative activity and religious experience. The aim of this “parable” is to present the spiritual situation in which we are now. Thanks to that in a further part of today’s reflection we will be able to formulate certain criteria which will serve as a basis for effective search for the way of beauty in theology, so that it could be the answer to real sensitivity of contemporary man who is caught in a particular spiritual condition. It can be argued that finally it is all about the spirituality of man in which the need for beauty and art is manifested with all its obviousness.

    Wśród wielu wyzwań, przed którymi stoi dzisiaj Kościół, z nową siłą powrócił w ostatnich latach pluralizm kulturowy. Pozostaje niewątpliwym zadaniem teologii włączyć się w formułowanie konkretnych propozycji, które pozwoliłyby Kościołowi zmierzyć się z tym wyzwaniem w duchu tradycji i konkretnych doświadczeń wpisujących się w pamięć kościelną. Kluczową sprawą pozostaje pamięć o zasadach teologicznych, którymi należy się kierować, podejmując to wyzwanie. Na niektóre zasady zwracamy tutaj uwagę, starając się włączyć w debatę społeczną, niestety, nie zawsze poprawną, która toczy się w tej chwili.
    Today the Church has to face numerous challenges. One of them – the cultural pluralism – has recently came back with a new strength. It is an unquestionable task of theology to take part in formulating specific propositions which would let the Church tackle the problem on the traditional level as well as with respect to particular experiences which remain in the memory of the Church. The thing which cannot be neglected is the memory of the theological principles which have to be observed while facing this challenge. Therefore some of these principles are discussed here as an attempt to join the public debate, regrettably not always appropriate, which is currently taking place. In the present situation an appropriate programme of action could be looked for on the basis of the tradition of the Church. In the light of the analyses that were carried out, this programme could be summarised in the following way: accept positively authorised cultural diversity; contribute to the sanctification and salvation of those cultures exposing and eliminating those elements which introduce contrast between them and the word of God; point out wider perspectives of human, social and cultural maturity, which are opened by faith and its dynamic manifestations.

    Tradycja teologiczna przekazuje nam bardzo jasne przekonanie o statusie naukowym teologii, nie wahając się jednak podkreślać także jej wymiaru mądrościowego. Do potrzeby rozwijania tego wymiaru powraca się we współczesnych poszukiwaniach dotyczących metody teologii, zachowując oczywiście jej status naukowy, odpowiednio przystosowany do potrzeb duchowych naszych czasów. W artykule zostaje zaproponowane, w jaki sposób można by dzisiaj kontynuować w sposób metodycznie uzasadniony takie ujęcie teologii. Zostaje podkreślone, że odniesienie do mądrości odpowiada temu, co dzisiaj nazywa się zaangażowaniem nauki w życie społeczne i kulturowe, a tym samym zostaje także pokazany aspekt praktyczny teologii, która pozostaje pierwszorzędnie nauką spekulatywną. W takim też znaczeniu jest ona nauką kościelną znakomicie pozostającą w służbie Kościoła i uczestniczącą na swój sposób w jego misji.
    Theological tradition sends a clear message about the scientific status of theology and at the same time it emphasises its sapiential dimension. The need for the development of this dimension is recurrently taken up in the discussions over the method of theology, but of course, with the simultaneous maintenance of its scientific status appropriately adapted to spiritual needs of our times. This article proposes the way in which today such a perspective on theology could be pursued in a methodically justified way. It is highlighted that the reference to wisdom is relevant to what is today described as the involvement of science into social and cultural life, and coincidentally the practical aspect of theology which in the first place remains a speculative science is also demonstrated. In the same sense theology remains a church science which above all stays in the service of the Church and participates in its own way in the mission of the Church.

W obecnym momencie historycznym, pośród wielu wyzwań, na teologii spoczywa zadanie ukazania, że jest ona pełnoprawną nauką akademicką pośród innych nauk. Świadczy o tym zarówno przedmiot, którym jest tajemnica Boga, jak również funkcja dydaktyczna. Na umocnienie znaczenia naukowego teologii mogłoby wpłynąć mocniejsze akcentowanie jej specyfiki badawczej oraz unowocześnianie dydaktyki teologicznej.
    Theology has been a rightful branch of science for a long time. Obviously, it has its own specific character stemming both from its subject and scientific method, as well as from its specified ecclesiastical mission to which it remains subordinate. Theology is an entirely ecclesiastical science. Among other challenges pointed out by the theologians, theology has to show that it is a rightful academic discipline amid other sciences. It is acknowledged by its subject which is the mystery of God, as well as by its didactic function which consists in the transferring of the content which results from this mystery. Placing a stronger emphasis on its specific research character and on the modernization of theological didactics might support the scientific significance of theology. These very issues constitute the main subject of this article

    The life of the Church from the very beginning is connected with searching for Her own identity which has its expression in the forming of the profession of faith. The testimonies of this fact can be found already in the Old Testament, which is shown in multifarious doctrinal formulas which are handed over by the apostolic proclamation which is based on them. In a relatively short time these formulas were gathered as a whole, first in the profession of faith used during the right of Baptism and later, especially in a profession of faith which is called the Apostles’ Creed. It has preserved its significance and superior role in theology and preaching to this day although in reality its role has been diminished especially in preaching. This paper recommends the return to the Apostles’ Creed and to its inspiring role. The most important thing is to present its doctrinal message which highlights the need for the holistic, Trinitarian and Christological perspective in reference to theological issues. Today, the Apostles’ Creed can play the same role in the organisation of Church proclamation, which admiring the so called original kerygma falls into short-sighted interpretations and restrictions, resulting in the weakening of Christian identity.
    Życie Kościoła od samego początku związane jest z poszukiwaniem własnej tożsamości, której wyrazem jest formowanie się wyznania wiary. Świadectwa tego znajdujemy już w Nowym Testamencie, o czym świadczą rozmaite formuły doktrynalne, na których opierasię i które przekazuje przepowiadanie apostolskie. W stosunkowo krótkim czasie te formuły zostały zebrane w jedną całość, najpierw w chrzcielnym wyznaniu wiary, a potem zwłaszcza w wyznaniu wiary nazywanym Symbolem Apostolskim. Zachowuje on swoją wagę i pierwszorzędną rolę w teologii i w przepowiadaniu do naszych czasów, chociaż w praktyce jego rola uległa pomniejszeniu, zwłaszcza w przepowiadaniu. W niniejszym artykule proponuje się powrót do Symbolu Apostolskiego i do jego inspirującego naczenia. Chodzi przede wszystkim o wydobycie jego przesłania doktrynalnego, które zwraca uwagę na potrzebę całościowego, trynitarno-chrystologicznego, ujmowania zagadnień teologicznych. Taką samą rolę może on odegrać w porządkowaniu dzisiejszego przepowiadania ościelnego, które zachwycając się tak zwanym kerygmatem pierwotnym, popada w krótkowzroczne interpretacje i zawężenia, czego rezultatem jest osłabianie tożsamości chrześcijańskiej.
