    This paper elaborates upon the status of the Theology of the Body (TOB) among the philosoph- ical and theological disciplines. The TOB is a relevant part of ecclesiastical reflection due to the modern cultural context. The genesis of the TOB is deeply rooted in social, political and econo- mic development of the Western civilization after the Enlightenment and Positivism of the 19th c. The TOB is a part of theology which is a valid and necessary part of the human knowledge. The justification for the TOB comes from its subject matter, which is the human body. The human body transcends physical reality through its actions and points towards the invisible realm of the soul and morality. The TOB needs to be recognized as one of the ontological disciplines rather than a deontological one, only. The TOB can be categorized as a part of fundamental theology within systematic theology.

    Teologia ciała jest ściśle związana z definicją człowieka Jana Pawła II. Jej sednem jest afirmacja męskości i kobiecości, która wyraża się poprzez ciało. W sferze tej znajduje się nie tylko biologiczna struktura płciowa, ale cała sfera zachowań wynikających z płci. Sytuacją, która pozostaje w kontrze do nauczania Karola Wojtyły, jest proponowane (inicjowane konsumpcjonizmem) podejście do ciała jak do przedmiotu, maszyny, od której wymaga się najwyższej sprawności i parametryzacji wszystkiego, maksymalizacji jego możliwości, ale także jako do naczynia, które skrywa duchowe piękno, pozostające w przymusowej i niechcianej zależności od ciała. Dynamiczny rozwój badań wokół cielesności nie doprowadził do jednej powszechnie przyjmowanej antropologii, a spór wokół definicji osoby i znaczenia jej fizycznej struktury, wciąż nie wycisza się. Coraz częściej mówi się o tym, że globalizacja i kultura masowa korzystają z tematu ciało, aby przyciągać konsumpcjonizmem uwagę uczestników życia społecznego, potęgując przy tym „użytkowość” i „użyteczność” ciała. W tym kontekście ważne jest dostrzeżenie propozycji Karola Wojtyły, który korzystając z doświadczeń Tradycji katolickiej, logicznie łączy osiągnięcia nauk teologicznych, antropologicznych, aby następnie przyjrzeć się im przez pryzmat zagadnień etycznych. Dowartościowuje więc ciało (materialne, przygodne, niestałe, śmiertelne, ale niezbędnego, aby wyrazić siebie) i zadaje pytanie jak poprzez nie można wyrazić miłość.
    The theology of the body is closely related to John Paul II's definition of man. Its core is the affirmation of masculinity and femininity, which is expressed through the body. In this sphere there is not only the biological sex structure, but the entire sphere of behaviour resulting from gender. The situation which remains in opposition to Karol Wojtyła's teaching is the proposed (consumerism-initiated) approach to the body as a subject, a machine that requires the highest efficiency and parameterization of everything, maximizing its possibilities, but also as a kind of pot that hides spiritual beauty, remaining in a forced and unwanted dependence on the body. The dynamic development of research around the corporality has not led to a single universally accepted anthropology, and the dispute over the definition of a person and the importance of his or her physical structure remains unsettled. Increasingly, globalisation and mass culture seem to use the subject of the body to attract the attention of the participants in social life with consumerism, enhancing the "usability" and "usefulness" of the body. In this context, it is important to see the proposal of Karol Wojtyła, who, following the experience of the Catholic Tradition, logically combines the achievements of the theological and anthropological sciences and then looks at them through the prism of ethical issues. Consequently, he values the body (material, incidental, unstable, mortal, but necessary to express oneself) and asks how love can be expressed through it.

    Nowa fala rewolucji seksualnej w swej postaci transgenderowej ogarnęła cały zachodni świat, wywołując w niektórych środowiskach w Polsce gwałtowne żądania pełnego dostępu do edukacji seksualnej, aborcji i antykoncepcji. Zarówno wrogi stosunek do Kościoła, jak i próby dyskredytowania autorytetu świętego Jana Pawła II, towarzyszące tym żądaniom, odzwierciedlają odwieczne napięcie pomiędzy Kościołem a światem, między chrześcijańską a laicką wizją człowieka. Karol Wojtyła od lat pięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku był świadomy, że batalia o sekularyzację tego świata i o prawo do zawłaszczenia dusz ludzkich zostanie przeprowadzona na terenie ludzkiej uczuciowości i seksualności. Małżeństwo i rodzina są tym miejscem, od obrony którego zależy jakość relacji nowoczesnego człowieka z Bogiem. Jan Paweł II wiedział, że delikatne kwestie ludzkiej tożsamości, seksualności i wzajemnych odniesień wymagają oparcia w gruntownym pojęciu osoby. Wzajemnie się uzupełniająca refleksja filozoficzna i teologiczna złożyła się na jego syntetyczną wizję Boga, człowieka, Kościoła i świata. Zastosowanie przez Jana Pawła II personalistycznego klucza do odczytania zjawiska ludzkiej miłości i seksualności, małżeństwa i rodziny okazało się wyjątkowo trafnym wyborem. Ukoronowaniem całej jego personalistycznej refleksji okazała się teologia ciała, w pełni oryginalna rehabilitacja biblijnego, chrześcijańskiego spojrzenia na ludzką miłość. Jan Paweł II uważał, że „miłość, cywilizacja miłości związane są z personalizmem, bo chodzi o osobę zdolną stawać się darem dla drugich, a co więcej, znajdującą w tym radość”.
    The new wave of the sexual revolution in its transgender form has swept the entire western world, causing, in some circles in Poland, violent demands for full access to sex education, abortion and contraception. The hostile attitude towards the Church, as well as the attempts to discredit the authority of Saint John Paul II, which accompany these demands, reflect the age-old tension between the Church and the world, between the Christian and the secular vision of the human being. Since the 1950s, Karol Wojtyła was aware that the battle for secularization of the world and the right to appropriate human souls would be carried out in the area of human emotionality and sexuality. Marriage and the family are the place on which the quality of modern human being’s relationship with God depends. He knew that the delicate issues of human identity, sexuality, and interrelationship needed to be grounded in a thorough understanding of the person. Mutually complementary philosophical and theological reflection contributed to his synthetic vision of God, human being, the Church and the world. John Paul’s II use of a personalistic key to read the phenomenon of human love and sexuality, marriage and family turned out to be an exceptionally accurate choice. The crowning achievement of all his personalistic reflections turned out to be the theology of the body, a fully original rehabilitation of the biblical, Christian view of human love. John Paul II believed that „love, the civilization of love are related to personalism, because it is about a person who is capable of becoming a gift to others, and moreover, finding joy in it”.

    The relation masculinity – paternity is considered according to the John Paul II’ theology of the body. The first problem in that question is relation: nature (quiddity) – person. The author claims that „person has nature” (R. Spaemann) and always it is a male/female nature.  Body nad sex, the impotrant elements of human being ought to be an expression of the person (John Paul II). Relation  masculinity – paternity can be considered in two models. The first one is natural – masculinity is a foundation of paternity; it can be described by such concepts as force, firmness, bravery, risk. The second one is spiritual – paternity is foundation, the important category is „spiritual birth”. It can be described by the terms: power, authority, responsibility, care. Both categories are important in upbringing: masculinity points to realistic, concrete elements in action, paternity – unveils social, cultural and personal aspects of the attitude.
    W niniejszym artykule relację męskość – ojcostwo rozważa się według Teologii ciała Jana Pawła II. W związku z tym centralnym problemem jest związek zachodzący między naturą a osobą. Autor uważa, że „osoba ma naturę” (Robert Spaemann) i zawsze jest to natura męska lub kobieca. Ciało i płeć są ważnymi elementami ludzkiego bytu i powinny wyrażać osobę (Jan Paweł II). Relację męskość – ojcostwo można rozważać zgodne z dwoma modelami. Według pierwszego – naturalnego – męskość jest fundamentem ojcostwa; może być opisana przez takie pojęcia jak: siła, stanowczość, odwaga, ryzyko. Drugi model jest duchowy – fundamentem jest ojcostwo, ważną kategorią jest duchowe zrodzenie; można je opisać poprzez takie terminy jak: władza, autorytet, odpowiedzialność, troska. Obydwie kategorie są ważne w wychowaniu: męskość wskazuje na elementy realistyczne, konkretne, skuteczne w działaniu, ojcostwo ujawnia zaś aspekty społeczne, kulturowe, osobowe postawy.

    Wanda Półtawska belonged to the departing generation of „Columbus”. Born in Lublin, where she was deprived of any of youth well-being, she always preferred to use the term “providence” to describe her adolescence. During the World War II she became the victim of medical experiments in concentration camp Ravensbrück. After the war she lived in Cracow. In her search for spiritual consolation from post-camp trauma she encounters a charismatic priest – Karol Wojtyła. This meeting developed into a genuine friendship, crowned with spiritual adoption. Półtawska turned out to be not only a devoted trustee of the bishop Wojtyła, but also his intellectual superstructure. She was and still is a voice of conscience, advocate of marital chastity und relentless defender of conceived life. Throughout her post-war life she was engaged in numerous initiatives created and developed by bishop Wojtyła, such as marriage counselling or Institute for Theology of the Family. After election of cardinal Wojtyła to the Pope she had been called to Rome, where she soon became an expert on the encyclical “Humanae Vitae”. She worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Studies of Marriage and Family, a subsidiary of Pontifical Lateran University. She also became a member of an elite academy Pro-Vita, where a famous event of miraculous healing from a cancer through the intercession of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina took place. She was present at John Paul II’s death bed. She is also known as author of many scientific and popular-scientific papers dealing with pastoral medicine. She was decorated with numerous medals and awards and is still ready to serve despite her age and devastating illness.

    Papież Franciszek 8 października 2013 roku ogłosił decyzję o zwołaniu Synodu o rodzinie. Nowością był fakt, że synod odbył się w dwóch etapach: w roku 2014 jako synod nadzwyczajny, a w roku 2015 – zwyczajny. 19 marca 2016 roku papież Franciszek podpisał posynodalną adhortację Amoris laetitia, która światło dzienne ujrzała 8 kwietnia. W adhortacji znajdziemy 50 cytatów z nauczania Jana Pawła II na temat małżeństwa i rodziny, przede wszystkim w rozdziałach IV i V adhortacji, w których mowa jest o teologii ciała Jana Pawła II. Celem artykułu jest odwołanie się do katechez i innych tekstów Jana Pawła II na temat miłości małżeńskiej obecnych w adhortacji, tak by można było umieścić Amoris laetitia w szerszym kontekście nauczania Jana Pawła II i zbadać, na ile ostatni dokument o miłości w rodzinie jest twórczą kontynuacją wcześniejszego nauczania Kościoła na ten temat.
    Pope Francis on 8 October 2013 announced the decision to convene the Synod on the family. The novelty was that the Synod took place in two stages: in 2014 as extraordinary synod and in 2015 ordinary.On March 19, 2016, Pope Francis signed the post-synodal exhortation of Amoris laetitia which appeared on April 8th. In the exhortation we find 50 quotes from the teaching of John Paul II on marriage and the family, especially in chapters IV and V of the exhortation, which speaks of the theology of the body of John Paul II. The purpose of this article is to appeal to the catechesis and other texts of John Paul II on conjugal love present in the exhortation, so as to place Amoris laetitia in the broader context of the teaching of John Paul II and study how the last document of love in the family is a creative continuation of the earlier Church teaching on the subject.

    W związku z ostatnimi synodami biskupów (2014 i 2015 r.) pojawiła się w społeczeństwie dyskusja na temat dopuszczania osób rozwiedzionych, którzy ponownie zawarli związek z innymi osobami, do Komunii Świętej. Problem ten dotyka zagadnienia nierozerwalności małżeństwa. Jan Paweł II w odpowiedzi na kryzys wynikający z „plagi rozwodów” przedstawiał w swoim nauczaniu Boży zamysł wobec małżeństwa i rodziny, broniąc nierozerwalności małżeństwa. Podstawą normy dotyczącej nierozerwalności dla św. Jana Pawła II jest rozmowa Jezusa z faryzeuszami (Mt 19, 1–9), w której Chrystus nie tylko potwierdził normę, ale odwołał się do biblijnego „początku”. Podążając za tym nauczaniem, papież konsekwentnie buduje swoją antropologię opartą na opisie stworzenia człowieka. Fundamentem jego wizji jest soborowe nauczanie, że człowiek „nie może odnaleźć się w pełni inaczej jak tylko poprzez bezinteresowny dar z siebie samego” (Gaudium et spes 24). Małżeństwo jest wspólnotą osób (communio personarum) opartą na całkowitym i bezinteresownym darze z siebie, co zakłada nierozerwalność małżeństwa. Ponadto instytucja małżeństwa ukierunkowana jest na pełnię sakramentalną, którą osiąga wraz z przyjściem Chrystusa. Jako sakrament małżeństwo uczestniczy i wyraża nierozerwalną miłość Chrystusa do Kościoła. Na tej podstawie, antropologicznej i sakramentalnej, św. Jan Paweł II broni nierozerwalności związku małżeńskiego.
    Owning to the 2014 and 2015 Synods of Bishops a question has been raised and discussed in a society about admitting the divorced and remarried people to Holy Communion. This question, in fact, pertains to the teaching of the Church on the indissolubility of marriage. John Paul II responding to the crisis caused by the “plague of divorces” showed God’s plan for marriage and family. He claimed that the conversation between Christ and the Pharisees (Mt 19:1–9) was the source of the moral norm about the indissolubility of a marital bond in which Jesus not only confirmed the norm but also reffered to the biblical “beginning”. Following Christ’s teaching, the Pope consequently developed his anthropology based on the account of creation. The foundation of his view on human being is the conciliar teaching that man “cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself” (Gaudium et spes, 24). Marriage is a communion of persons (communio personarum) based on the total and sincere gift of self which demands the indissolubility of the bond. Moreover, the institution of marriage is oriented towards its sacramental fulfilment in Christ. As a sacrament, marriage participates and expresses the unbreakable bond between Christ and the Church. John Paul II was a firm defender of marriage indissolubility who drew his teaching on these two premises, anthropological and sacramental.

    Jednym z głównych wątków bogatego magisterium św. Jana Pawła II jest tematyka antropologiczna. Pytanie o człowieka, o jego naturę, jego egzystencjalny etos i ostateczne powołanie, które odnajduje w Bogu, było tematem pierwszej, programowej encykliki Redemptor hominis. Jednak geneza zainteresowania tematem człowieka była wcześniejsza i sięga początków formacji intelektualnej i duchowej Karola Wojtyły, a także jego pracy kapłańskiej. Znaczącym elementem tej historii jest duszpasterstwo młodzieży akademickiej w Krakowie. Stało się ono nie tylko praktycznym polem doświadczenia człowieka, ale i inspiracją do naukowej refleksji filozoficzno-teologicznej. Jej owocem były dwa dzieła, w których Wojtyła formułuje zarys swojego personalizmu integralnego: Miłość i odpowiedzialność oraz Osoba i czyn. Zawarta w nich analiza podmiotowości człowieka będzie później fundamentem jego nauczania o godności osoby ludzkiej, której najgłębszy fundament znajduje się w stworzeniu człowieka na obraz i podobieństwo Boga, w odkupieniu dokonanemu przez Chrystusa i powołaniu człowieka do wspólnoty miłości z Bogiem w wieczności. Artykuł przedstawia zasadnicze linie tego rozwoju, począwszy od pierwszych konferencji na temat człowieka skierowanych do krakowskich studentów, aż po teologię ciała, rozwijaną w trakcie środowych audiencji w Watykanie.
    One of the main themes of the rich magisterium of St. John Paul II is an anthropological theme. The question about man, his nature, his existential ethos and the ultimate vocation he finds in God was the subject of the first, program encyclical Redemptor hominis. However, the genesis of his interest in the topic of man was much earlier and dates back to the beginnings of the intellectual and spiritual formation of Karol Wojtyła, as well as his priestly work. A significant element of this story is the pastoral care of the university students in Krakow. It has become not only a practical field of the experience of every human being, but also an inspiration for the scientific philosophical and theological reflection. Its fruit were two works in which Wojtyła formulates an outline of his integral personalism: Love and responsibility, and Person and act. The analysis of the human subjectivity contained in them will later become the foundation of his teaching on the dignity of the human person, whose deepest foundation is being created in the image and likeness of God, redemption by Christ and man’s vocation to communion with God in eternity. The article presents the main lines of this development starting from the first conferences on the topic of man addressed to students in Krakow to the theology of the body, developed during the Wednesday audiences in the Vatican.

    St. Irenaeus as a western figure has a different exegetical account of Genesis which provides some of the foundational principles for his theological concepts of the ‘new Adam’ and recapitulation. The western theological tradition has instead taken the approach handed down by St. Augustine which is seen in St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. This article will describe the difficulties of Irenaeus’s view while also showing the faults of the Augustinian position as shown in John Paul II while comparing the fruit of both in order to develop a synthesis that can encapsulate the fruit of both positions.
    Święty Ireneusz jako postać teologii zachodniej wyróżnia się swoistą egzegezą Księgi Rodzaju, która wyznaczyła fundamenty dla jego teologicznych koncepcji „nowego Adama” i rekapitulacji. Zachodnia tradycja teologiczna przyjęła zamiast tego podejście przekazaneprzez św. Augustyna, które widać w teologii ciała św. Jana Pawła II. W niniejszym artykule opisuję trudności poglądu Ireneusza, jednocześnie ukazując wady stanowiska Augustyna rozwijanego przez Jana Pawła II, i porównuję owoce obu koncepcji w celuwypracowania ich syntezy.

    Aby wiernie odtworzyć obraz rodziny nakreślony przez św. Jana Pawła II, należy wspólnie z nim zastanowić się nad źródłem, specyfiką i ostatecznym celem wspólnoty małżeńskiej i rodzinnej. Takie poszukiwania prowadzą do odkrycia szczególnej drogi, na której członkowie rodziny odnajdują Boga i żyją Nim, a przez to stają się coraz bardziej sobą. Papież bowiem podkreślał wyraźnie, że w obliczu współczesnych zagrożeń, osoba, małżeństwo i rodzina bardziej niż czegokolwiek innego potrzebują otwarcia się na tę Prawdę, która jest fundamentem ich istnienia i miłowania. W dobie obecnej debaty wokół małżeństwa i rodziny, która znalazła swój oddźwięk również w pracach Synodu Biskupów, odkrycia wymaga ciągle proroczy charakter spojrzenia św. Jana Pawła II na mał-żeństwo.
    In his catechesis Man and Woman He Created Them, St. John Paul II reveals marriage and family as a sacrament of communion between God and humanity. The truth of the nuptial mystery (sacramentum magnum) and the living out of that truth in human experience (ethos) form the image of the spirituality of marriage and family. Created in the image and likeness of God and consecrat-ed in the love of Christ and his Bride, the Church, men and women live the full and fruitful gift of themselves. In this way they don’t close themselves to what’s natural, but they build the domestic Church, where they become truly themselves. The Holy Spirit permeates the spouses with the grace of the sacrament, so they can form „one flesh” and build the communion of the family, transform-ing all its members through the Eucharist, prayer and sacramental reconciliation. From this truly human love, which finds its proper measure only in union with God, grows a particular way able to lead the spouses, parents and children to their mutual sanctification.

    Charakterystyczny dla współczesnej kultury dualizm antropologiczny, który rozdziela człowieka na dwie różne sfery: materialną i duchową, uniemożliwia rozmowę na fundamentalne dla współczesności tematy, dotyczące ciała, płci, seksualności. W swojej filozoficznej i teologicznej antropologii Jan Paweł II zmierzył się z tym błędem, tworząc pojęcie sensu ciała, oblubieńczego i rodzicielskiego. Artykuł jest próbą zastosowania tego pojęcia, kluczowego dla tzw. „teologii ciała” Jana Pawła II, do krytycznej refleksji na temat rozszerzonego rozumienia ojcostwa i macierzyństwa, zrywającego więź pomiędzy biologicznym pochodzeniem dziecka i emocjonalną, realną więzią z rodzicami.
    The anthropological dualism characteristic of contemporary culture divides the human being into two distinct spheres: material and spiritual. As a result, it is almost impossible to talk meaningfully today about certain topics of fundamental importance: the body, sex, and sexuality. In his philosophical and theological anthropology, John Paul II challenged this error by creating the concept of the spousal and parental sense of the body. The present article is an attempt to apply this concept, key to the so-called “Theology of the Body” of John Paul II. Through critical reflection we can arrive at a broader understanding of fatherhood and motherhood, a way of thinking that breaks the bond between the biological origin of a child and the emotional, real bond formed with his or her parents.

    Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie relacji wiary chrześcijańskiej i kultury w jej specyficznym obszarze, który wyznacza ludzka cielesność i seksualność. W teologicznej antropologii Jana Pawła II, której część stanowi tzw. teologia ciała, seksualność winna stanowić uprzywilejowane miejsce objawiania się tajemnicy życia Bożego. W tym ujęciu płciowość człowieka nabiera wyjątkowego sensu z uwagi na swą zdolność do wyrażania osobowego daru. Ta hermeneutyka daru zostaje skontrastowana ze współczesnym kulturowym statusem seksualności, której symptomatycznym wyrazem jest m.in. sztuka filmowa oraz jej społeczny odbiór. Przykład dwóch produkcji filmowych ujawnia naznaczenie tej sfery kultury złem o niespotykanej dotąd w historii skali. Postulowanym lekarstwem na tę sytuację jest promocja idealnego ujęcia miłości seksualnej oraz kształtowanie właściwego etosu odbiorcy kultury i sztuki – etosu widzenia.
    The article presents the problem of the relationship between Christian faith and culture in its specific area which is marked out by human corporeality and sexuality. In view of theological anthropology of John Paul II, in what is called theology of the body, sexuality should be a privileged place of revealing the mystery of the life of God. In this perspective, human sexuality receives special meaning because of its ability to express a personal gift. The hermeneutics of the gift is in contrast with contemporary cultural status of sexuality, film art and its social reception being a symptomatic expression of it. The example of two films shows that this particular area of culture is marked by an evil in a scale unprecedented in the history. Postulated remedy for this situation is to promote the ideal image of sexual love and the formation of the proper ethos of the recipient of culture and art – the ethos of seeing.
