Opis:
The paper approaches the problem of a research of a Christian dimension of literature and theatre in the period of the crisis of Christian anthropology, which has been deeply felt at the end of the 20th century. Destructive elements have appeared in the understanding of the history and the role which Christianity has played in the construction of the world. The fruits of the contemporary culture have become sour; they contradict achievements of humanism and create an entity which has been named by Pope John Paul II as the “culture of death”. A researcher of the 20th century literature and theatre in his/her attempt to reach to the source of these processes and reveal real roots of the European culture must make an “incision” with Logos or with “the Light of the Gospel” on the body of the work created by this culture. So, that, as a result of this “incision” the elements which poison it might be eliminated. In this way a transcendental dimension of the European culture could be revealed and a proper description could start; proper because it could undertake the type of anthropology which had been revealed in the Bible and later developed by Judaism and Christianity.

By approaching Ślub (The Marriage) as an epistemological dilemma of a human being who has been caught in a trap of the stage, the author proposes to reread and interpret a new W. Gombrowicz’s drama from a performative perspective. While relating to the title of Tadeusz Kantor’s cricotage Ślub w manierze konstruktywistycznej i surrealistycznej (A Wedding in the Constructivist and Surrealistic Style), the author aims to demonstrate the multi-faceted performative impact of Gombrowicz’s drama within the context of the dissolution of the principles and referential forms of metatheater.

Opis:
A superior aim of the article was to prove that Zbigniew Herbert’s lyrical works in an unusually clear way gravitate towards drama and theatre. To prove this, the author of the thesis revealed the relationship between the, coming from the volume Hermes, Dog and the Star, lyric At the Gate of the Valley and a mystery play which should be understood not only as a medieval variant of religious drama but also more widely that is in terms of outlook or as an anthropological, historiosophic or metaphoric category. The author of the article showed that for the mystery character of the work speaks not only the subject taken from the Bible or non-Aristotelian action but also sacred character of space-time and, above all, martyrological plot of the lyrical text, showing the suffering of individual characters of the poem as a mirror reflection of the torment of the Saviour. He also noticed that at the beginning of the lyric Herbert used verse which under certain conditions may resemble medieval ways of versification, also typical of dramatic mystery forms and he tried to prove that the author of The Report from a Besieged City, composing his mini drama, used also a film way of watching the stage and the events happening on it. Setting about revealing the relationships between the above-mentioned lyric and a mystery play, the author of the article first showed these signs which indicate the dramatic and theatrical provenance of the poem. He proved that the lyrical subject resigned from the direct characterization of the depicted world and let speak specific stage characters using different forms of dialogue. He showed that the author constructed the statements of individual characters in such a way as to overload them with the surplus of information, typical of stage dialogues. He also proved that the events that the reader follows from the position of the spectator, take place in a specific scenery and the dramatis personae not only have clear psychological construction but they also, as it is proper for the show, use a variety of visual and acoustic signs concerning both the performer and the space. The author of the article deeply hopes that with his thesis he will contribute to enriching traditional analysis of Zbigniew Herbert’s lyrics with such ways of reading that let notice dramatic and theatrical character of his poems.

Równoległe, zbieżne i przeciwstawne widzenie opowieści filmowej i teatralnej, która stanowi jej cześć, to trzy wersje – zawsze dialogicznej – intertekstualności typu „teatr w filmie”.
Parallel, convergent and opposing vision of the story in theatre and the story in film, which forms its part, are the three, always dialogical versions, of intertextuality of the kind “theatre in film”. Often, the mere mention of the title, a quote or excerpt introduce an important semantic load, which through the diffusion of the senses modifies and complements the meaning of the main action on the screen. A theatrical spectacle, that is included in the film as a “quoted expression”, brings about – depending on the competences of the viewer – a full set of its meaning. Embedded in specific contexts, movie plots in which there are productions of Shakespeare, Goethe or Wyspiański, show how current are the classic texts in our culture, and their message is confronted with the political and social reality. This observation is particularly interesting in conjunction with the historical realities of oppressive power and censorship of the communist period during which most of the films constituting the source material of this text was made.

This article is an attempt to show the non-professional reception of literature and theatre of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by ‘a young theatre amateur’ from Cracow. It reveals the dilemmas of a patriot who was convinced about the obligation of art to serve the nation, while at the same time she was interested in the ideas of Nietzsche and the theme of art as a temple propagated by “Chimera”. Elżbieta Kietlińska (b. 1881) who received no secondary education, had no job, and never founded a family, did not work, did not belong to any organisation, had no artistic ambitions, for many years lived on art, which gave meaning to her life. Intimate confessions of this inhabitant of Cracow show a spontaneous acceptance by young people of Słowacki (in particular), but also of Mickiewicz and Krasiński, and did not resist to accept the pre-first night performances of plays which ‘were not written to be staged’. Among her contemporaries she considered Wyspiański – the playwright and theatre artist to be the greatest authority: matter-of-factly and vividly she writes about his work as stage manager. Of modern European dramaturgy she most valued and deeply experienced Russian drama. With appreciation, but not uncritically, she was watching the work of Ibsen. She was fascinated by the genius of Wagner as a composer. She was the opposite of a ‘Philistine’. Her opinions, thoughts and emotions, may be the subject of all kinds of studies by the researchers of culture of the period of modernism.

The article is an analysis of the function of dystopia in The Silver Dream of Salomea by Juliusz Słowacki. In this drama, dystopia is identified with an evil place which is the important part of space solutions in the world represented in the piece. A new view of Ukrainian steppe representation is possible thanks to this perspective. The analysis is focused not only on space solutions, but also on theatrical metaphors that represent the inside space of the steppe. As a result of the dystopic perspective, the formal solutions which reinforce the mystical concept of the world presented in the drama become quite conspicuous.

The Israeli theatre scholar Shimon Levy describes the works of Samuel Beckett using the category of “offstage,” i.e. what is “backstage” or “behind the scenes.” This notion is also suitable to describe the plot of An-sky’s play The Dybbuk. The plot, which follows the wanderings of the soul of a prematurely deceased lover, is based on a continuous interplay between the explicit and the implicit, the revealed and the concealed, the present and the absent. Applying the category of “offstage” as an analytical tool allows for speaking about the supernatural forces which are depicted in the play, while replacing religious nomenclature with a glossary of terms from the field of theatre.

Opis:
The previous attempts to present Tadeusz Miciński’s The Polish Thermopylae on the stage ended in either a complete failure or at least unfulfilled expectations. The multi-dimensional text-charade, full of numerous historical and philosophical references, constitutes a true challenge for an audience and a director. The ideological potential of the text encourages risky updates and simplifications. The plot of Miciński’s play is set in the years 1787–1813, starting with the meeting of King Stanisław August with Empress Catherine II and ending with the death of Prince Józef Poniatowski in the Elster River; yet, it takes place in the head of the dying prince. The Polish Thermopylae condenses time in a mysterious way and provokes the spectator to interpret historical events from the perspective of a mystery play. Jan Klata, the director, abandons allusions to a mystery play, uses many cliches from the sphere of pop-culture, and exposes the presence of the grotesque in Miciński’s play. In his impressive post-modern show, reality is arranged like a video clip: a juxtaposition of war and sports and erotic conquest, a conventional presentation of Empress Catherine II as the insatiable Messallina, a gymnastic amploi of Patiomkin as an allusion to Putin’s muscle flexing are not an intellectual challenge for the contemporary audience. And the ideal of Miciński’s theatre is the theatre being the judgement of conscience, the theatre being the mirror, the “mouse-trap” that never becomes out of date.

Opis:
The paper depicts the most recent literature as regards the relations between the cult to Dionysus and the Greek theatre. We find here the views of, among others, S. Goldhill, who showed the social and political aspect of the festival in honour of Dionysus, and thereby he pointed to Dionysus as the protective deity of the polis. R. Friedrich criticized this point of view. He discusses the transitory stage between the rite and the fully developed tragedy. He stated that at the source of the drama one finds ἱερὸς λόγος, dealing with Dionysus' special passion (his suffering, death and resurrection). Another scholar who touched upon this problem is R. Seaford. He directed our attention to the Dionysian myth. The scholar treats that myth and cult as elements of the social process forming the polis rather than as a source of tragedy. The theme which is of interest for us here is dealt with by P.E. Easterling. She pointed to a strong link between the Dionysian festival and dithyramb. She laid a great stress on the significance of the satyr drama which – according to her – was supposed to demonstrate the „animal” spirit of the audience. Undoubtedly, this wildness has something to do with Dionysus – the god of dance, singing, wine, and joy. This is on what the scholar bases her theory as regards the relationship between the cult of Dionysus and the theatre. Now D. Paleothodoros, while discussing this relationship, grounds his theory on the archeological research of the Athenian agora. His research indicates that the cult of Dionysus and dramatic festival were introduced to Athens at the time of the reign of the sons of Pisistratus.

The first wave of feminism in Poland consisted of a wide range of events. All women who were educated, independent, and professionally active and successful were regarded as feminists (regardless of their self-identification). Women of the theater, i.e., playwrights, directors, actresses and scenographers, who occupied themselves with “womanly subjects” in the 1920s and 1930s, created feminist theater which was important though it did not last long. In numerous feminist performances, theatrical productions dealt with subjects such as women in control of their own sexuality and bodies, women’s full participation in life, as well as economic independence and equal rights for women. Feminists in Polish theater, for example, Zofia Modrzewska, Maria Morozowicz-Szczepkowska, Irena Grywińska and Marcelina Grabowska, were typically not treated seriously by male critics, who were condescending, scornful, and unable to transcend their male perspective.

Opis:
The author deals with the auditorium of the Greek theatre in a twofold meaning: as a part of the stage building and as its audience who took seats in the theatre during performances. The first part of the paper depicts the following issues from the historical point of view: the auditorium of the Greek theatre as instanced by the most characteristic remnants of the ancient theatrical buildings, that is the size of the audience, its division into blocks of seats, benches for the audience, seats and seats of honour. The second part deals with the theatrical audience: their number, their social composition, their behaviour during performances, relations between the stage and the audience. The latter aspect is more particularly exposed in the paper; the close relations between the spectators and actors have been discussed on the example of the texts of dramas (tragedy and ancient comedy) that have been preserved until now. As far as other particular issues are concerned, one should stress that the author is in favour of women in the theatre both during agons (dramatic contests) of tragedies, and in comedies, disputing in this matter with the opposite view presented by S. Goldhill (of 1997).

This is a reassessment of the work of Tadeusz Rittner, a bilingual Polish/German writer and dramatist from Galicia who won much acclaim in the early decades of the last century. This article examines his narrative and dramatic strategies by focusing on his drama Lato (Summer), published in 1913. It is a story about a timid young man who, after hearing from his doctor that he will not live much longer, turns suddenly into a bold and shameless seducer. This could be the stuff of a conventional, farcical exposure of middle class hypocrisy, yet in Rittner’s drama it becomes a fascinating study, never far from Czekhov and Witkacy, tapping all the resources of realism, irony and grotesque to show the whole spectrum of human emotions. The article argues, contrary to the traditional consensus, that his art owes a great deal to Vienna, where he spent most of his life. The peculiar combination of lightness and earthiness, the essence of the Viennese spirit, is crucial for his achievement – the creation of convincing and timeless dramas of human emotions, which expose the precariousness of interpersonal relations. This interpreta-tion of Lato sets it free from the realistic-naturalistic straitjacket imposed upon it by a succession of theatre directors who thought of it as an anachronistic farce rather than a comedy of manners with sparkling dialogue and intelligent alteration of tragedy and comedy, seriousness and buffoonery.

Prehľad prekladov slovenskej drámy v Poľsku v rokoch 990—2005 berie do úvahy dve oblasti obehu dramatického textu: jednak divadelnú, a jednak literárnu oblasť ako dva priestory priameho styku príjemcu s textom preloženého dramatického diela.
The review of polish translation of slovak drama between 1990—2005 regards two areas of dramatic text’s circulation. They are: scenic area and literatury area, which are also two spaces for direct contact between recipient and a text of a drama’s translation. During an indicated time slovak drama were staged by polish theatres seldom, stagings of radio-plays were dominated. The reason is in insufficiency of slovak drama’s translations in polish. Translations from before 1989 weren’t published, they loos at translators’s archives and now stage managers haven’t approach to them. From the beginning of 90. years only four translations of slovak drama were published. They also weren’t staged by polish profesional theatres. The direct presence of slovak drama in Poland is almost zero. This situation is only slightly owing by translators’s decision about a text to translating. It’s also slightly owing by a quality of translations like a final effect of a translators’s choices during his work. The minimal knowlegde of polish recipient anout slovak drama and theatre is also very important agent.

Teatr przekazujący doświadczenia wykorzenionych i osadzonych, dając im szansę mówienia własnym głosem, pozwala przełamać „historyczną amnezję” grup wykluczanych i pozbawionych przeszłości. Otwiera tak postkolonialną perspektywę widzenia rodzimej historii. Omówione w artykule teksty i przedstawienia to Niech żyje wojna! Pawła Demirskiego, Transfer! Jana Klaty i wyreżyserowana przez Marcina Libera inscenizacja dramatu Trash Story Magdy Fertacz.
The article describes the changes in discourse in recent Polish historical plays on the basis of texts about the Recovered Territories. The characters in the play are the people left on the margins of great history: the Germans deported from the territories of pre-war Germany that became part of Poland after World War II and the people from the East resettled by the authorities to this land. The theatre that transfers the experience of the uprooted and the resettled gives them the opportunity to speak with their own voice. The theatre breaks the „historical amnesia” of those who used to be excluded and voiceless. It opens a new, postcolonial perspective on Polish history. The discussed texts and plays are Paweł Demirski’s Niech żyje wojna! (Long live the war!), Transfer! by Jan Klata and Marcin Liber’s staging of Trash Story written by Magda Fertacz.
