Opis:
The symbolism of flowers has always been a significant part of cultures around the world due to their functional meaning in daily life. From their decorative to their aromatic role, flowers and their symbolic meaning trigger emotions, convey wishes and represent thoughts that can not be explicitly expressed. In this regard, an elaborate language based on flower symbolism was developed in many societies, to convey clear messages to the recipient. However, in some cultural contexts, although the flower symbolism has social connotations, it is mainly associated with economic references. As flowers are an essential precursor to fruits, they are inevitably a source of expectations and hence foster a set of hopes and dreams, which can ultimately lead to excitement or disappointment.Through a discourse analysis based on factional narratives, this article explores the parameters through which the symbolism of bifaceted meaning of flowers fictionalises a space that refers to the social reality. This association between the fictional world and social reference has highlighted that writing can profoundly be a means of representing social events through the rhetoric of symbolism. Through a sociological reading approach, this paper aims to analyse how the symbolism of flowers informs the rhetoric of disenchantment that can foster a content-based pedagogy in language learning where silencing practices engender imagery to exercise the freedom of expression.

Strawberries were the fruit that the Modernists and Modernism were very fond of. It thus should not be a surprise that strawberries also feature in Modernist prose texts of Katherine Mansfield. Although they make their appearance only in a couple of stories, and then merely for a brief moment, they should not by any means be treated as mere tiny blots belonging to the background. For when we take a closer look at them it turns out that, as is usually the case with Mansfield’s short stories, there is more to it than meets the eye. Seemingly unimportant, often unnoticed and therefore frequently underestimated, this small, sweet, red and fragrant fruit makes a significant statement in every text it is mentioned.

The oral biblical exegesis and oral transmission, or the unwritten tradition, represent pillars in the circulation of texts and ideas since the very dawn of Christianity, both in orthodox and heterodox circles. Namely, this vast topic encompasses the concepts related to the concepts of the written sources and the spoken word, and their interrelation, and, furthermore, to the symbolism of the ear, Logos, and secret teachings (arcana). The role and impact of the oral transmission will be examined on the example of the Bogomils, and this paper will re-assess the importance and function of the oral transmission of the Bogomil doctrine. Therefore, the Biblical exegesis will also be analyzed in that key, and the question of the Bogomil preachers will be addressed. More broadly, the oral transmission of the Bogomil teachings can be observed as one of the modi operandi that the Bogomils resorted to in the aim of propagating their ideas, as well as possibly their interpretative manner to approach the Scriptural material and parables.

The wild boar and the bear have been present in people's beliefs and customs from time immemorial. This was the case both with beliefs of representatives of folk culture – e.g. peasants in Byelorussia or shepherds in Silesia – and with recipients of high-brow and sophisticated chronicles written by medieval historians. The boar and the bear lived side by side, and this common presence – both the real one, connected with their similar habitats, and the proximity in the sphere of material and spiritual culture – could lead to the features of both these animals merging in one image, that is in the Sokola coat of arms, in which one can see a half-boar and half-bear.

Opis:
The present article proves that Augustine, explaining in Enarrationes in Psalmos the texts of Psalms, does not treat references occurig in them, to the moon merely as a part of the descriptions of beauty of the created world, but tries to perceive in it a hidden meaning, the disclosure of which serves the interpreation of different theological questions. For the bishop of Hippo, the moon is a metaphor of God the Creator, of Christ, of the Church and of the human being. With reference to God the Creator, the moon is to remind Christians, that God creating everything as being good and beautiful, He himself is the Good and the Beauty. Furthermore, the motive of the moon is to point to God’s self-sufficiency, his freedom and independence. The moon as metaphor of Christ, in turn, allows to perceive in Him the true God who, through the event of Incarnation, revealed to the human being the eternal plan of salvation. The ecclesiological dimension of the symbolism of the moon, however, introduces the concept of the beginnings of the Church, points out to its persecutions and to the presence of sinful people in it. What’s more, the moon-Church is the mystical Body of Christ and Christi s its Head. It is, furthermore, a Glorious Church that will be reigning with Christ for ever. Through the antropological dimension of the figure of the moon, Augustine exposes to the listeners of his sermons the truth about human fragility, corporality and mortality, moral inconstancy and a necessity for gaining more and more perfection with the suport of the Holy Spirit. The moon is salso to direct the human thinking at the truth of resurrection.

Opis:
Town halls have always been the best example of the aspirations and possibilities of urban communities. The location of the town hall building was related to its central role in the political system and functioning of the town. This was the case, irrespective of the period in which the building was raised, or its size. Its functional and ideological centrality in the urban space was achieved in several ways. The first, dating back to the ancient tradition, is associated with the classical structure of a city based on a rectilinear grid of streets – the town hall takes the place of the Roman praetorium, which was in the castrum at the intersection of the cardo and decumanus. This was not only the case in cities in the Apennine Peninsula, but also in colonized areas – in the towns established on the former sites of Roman camps. If the town hall building was part of a densely developed area, its form always distinguished it from the other buildings, and if it was a free-standing building, it competed with the church buildings with regards to its shape and location. Another way of emphasizing the central role of the main municipal building in the urban layout was to make it the main vertical accent, by accentuating its height with regard to the church towers – as in the solutions associated with the Flemish idea of the beffroi. The third important aspect regarding the spatial composition of medieval cities was the location of the town hall building in close relation to the “dynamic” diagonal axis of the town’s layout linking the town hall with the cathedral or parish church. This kind of layout can be found both on the Apennine Peninsula and in Silesia. The signifi cant analogies, which are visible at first glance, between the functioning of various town hall buildings in various geographical regions far away from one another, confirm the appropriateness of undertaking further research on the various groups of buildings in urban layouts both in the context of contemporary ideas and archetypes that had an influence throughout the whole of Europe, which in this context appears to be a culturally homogenous area.

Policies are not only being expressed by symbols and rituals, but their transmission and the use are being shaped by symbolic meanings. They teach how to understand world, putting it in order and help to overcome feeling of the chaos. To a large extent a so-called political reality is being created by symbolic meanings, even if it is hard for us to be reconciled with it. With the help of the appropriate selected set of multi-sensual, dramatic measures the political ritual allows more or less to capture participants and shape social imagination according to intentions of his organizers. Reconstructing or confirming existing political order the official ceremony with its performative nature tries with similar power as the ritual to involve its participants, seeks to generate feeling and images preferred by the authority. 10 January 1920, in accordance with provisions of the Treaty of Versailles the Republic of Poland took back Pomerania (annexed by Kingdom of Prussia in 1772 during First Partition of Poland). According to this, the special celebration was organized on the Puck Bay one month later. An episode with throwing the platinum ring into waters of the Baltic, called Poland’s Wedding to the Sea became soon the most important event in the great national story about the return of Pomerania to the motherland. It established the paradigmatic pattern for another state celebrations, which confirmed the northern boundary of Poland symbolically and state’s territorial integrity. Events in 1945 and 2010 were the variants of Poland’s Wedding to the Sea settled in their own historical context. On the one hand these ceremonies served as performative instruments for national legitimization of the power, but on the other hand they were used by political elites for creating and playing their own, different vision of the state.

Wierzenia ludowe podkreślają znaczenie psa w gusłach, magii, a nawet leczeniu, prezentując go jako zwierzę niezwykłe. Pojawia się on również w takich sferach, jak heraldyka, numizmatyka, sfragistyka, a także znaczki pocztowe i medale. Dzisiejsza kultura masowa wytworzyła szereg nowych odniesień do psa w filmie, literaturze, komiksie, animacji, łącząc w sobie bogactwo symboliki wypracowane przez wieki, zwłaszcza ikony wierności i oddania.
The dog has accompanied humans ever since the dawn of time. It has taken part in hunting, served as a guardian of property, and as a pet for entertainment. It has been associated with positive qualities such as loyalty, devotion, vigilance and attachment. Over the centuries, it has gained a number of representations in culture and art, both positive and negative. It is worth noting that, besides the cat, it is the only animal which has appeared in all cultures and beliefs from the dawn of time down to the present day. In antiquity, it had already gained a special place in the court of the pharaohs, as well as in the pantheon of the gods in Egypt or among the Greek gods as their companion. It was present in the lives of the rich and the poor, and was used for various purposes. Not surprisingly, the rich biblical symbolism, which, interestingly, in the Old Testament, has negative overtones, was later replaced by positive interpretations in the New Testament, the writings of the Church Fathers, and hagiographies. The dog has thus been not only a symbol of fidelity, devotion, self-sacrifice and courage, but also one of licentiousness, greed and hostility, as is shown in this study, which makes reference to various biblical and artistic themes. Folk beliefs emphasise the importance of the dog in witchcraft, magic and even healing, presenting it as an unusual animal. It is also featured in such spheres as heraldry, numismatics, sphragistics, and on postage stamps and medals. Today’s mass culture has produced a number of new references to the dog in film, literature, comics and animation, all of which combine the wealth of this symbolism developed over the centuries, especially as icons of fidelity and devotion.

The Book of Leviticus appears as a compilation of fragmentary cultic and ethical prescriptions, coming from different periods of religious history of Israel. The synchronic analysis, started by Mary Douglas, proved that the editor of final version of Leviticus was a great artist, with a religious goal. Leviticus is a book that presents multiple layers of meaning. In this article the Book of Leviticus was considered from the Religionswissenschaft point of view. The text was divided on a major blocks according to its theme, and then asked what message was delivered through each one of them; and subsequently, what was message of the whole Book. Careful analysis of vocabulary, as well as the time and place of action, allow to suggest a new structure - the four final chapters might serve as the endings for three blocks of text. The theme leads the reader from the temple to the community; from the present to the future.

Sanctus Amor is the only intravital storybook by Nina Petrovskaya, dedicated to Sergey Auslender. The title of the book, borrowed from the poem by Andrey Bely, initiates a literary polylogue addressed to several lovers of Petrovskaya: to Bely, as he once was her teacher of heavenly love; to Valery Bryusov, as he was Petrovskaya’s beloved one at the time of publication; to Auslender as the addressee of dedication and a new contender for being Petrovskaya’s favorite. Sanctus Amor represents the ideal of the Saintly Love, the manifesto which Petrovskaya followed rigorously in real life. Her letters to Bryusov and Vladislav Khodasevich reveal multiple congruences with the novels of Sanctus Amor, which demonstrate the inextricable character of life and literature in Petrovskaya’s worldview. The paper is devoted to the analysis of Sanctus Amor in the aspect of life-creating practices and its meaning in the literary dialogue with Auslender. Sanctus Amor is a complicated prescriptive symbolic message designed to proclaim its own, and to program another’s, concept of love.
