Throughout the centuries, the more-than-literal interpretation of the Bible was present in the tradition of the Church. Symbols made out of biblical literary motifs expressed deep theological and human concepts. They made visible what otherwise was invisible. Our article presents three symbols rooted in the biblical text that acquired new spiritual meanings in the ancient and medieval interpretation of the Scripture: wings, tree and bow.

Punktem wyjścia naszej refleksji jest najpierw próba zdefiniowania pojęcia symbolu w oparciu o analizę zakresu jego ewoluowania począwszy od starożytności, aż po czasy współczesne. Następnie przedmiot naszych analiz stanowi wartość poznawcza symboli w religii rozpatrywana z punktu widzenia ich funkcji i znaczenia. W tym kontekście działaniem koniecznym staje się potrzeba weryfikacji przestrzeni relacji między symbolem a językiem religijnym oraz specyfikacja symboli religijnych rozpatrywana pod kątem ich istoty, warstw i nieredukowalności.
The start point of our reflection is an attempt to define the meaning of a symbol. This endeavour is based on the analysis of the spectrum of its evolution, beginning from the ancient times right until the present day. The subsequent subject of our study is the epistemic value of religious symbols looked at in terms of their functions and meanings. In that aspect it is vital to verify the substance of a relationship between the symbol itself and the religious language, as well as to specify the said symbols based upon their essence and irreducible complexity.

The understanding of the function of symbols both in traditional and post-modern societies is one of the main tasks of contemporary anthropology. It is particularly apparent in the theoretical reflection of Victor Turner, a scholar who together with Clifford Geertz is thought to be the leading representative of symbolical anthropology. The explanation and interpretation of the symbols of religious rituals must in the very beginning emphasize the theoretically meaningful difference between a symbol and a sign. The processual-temporal analysis of symbol assumes that it is a living and active bearer of central values, such that dominate in a culture under investigation.

W artykule krótko ukazana jest bogata historia symboliki koła w kulturze. Przedstawiono definicję mandali w perspektywie koncepcji C. G. Junga. Zaprezentowano także wybrane dzieła kilku współczesnych artystów związanych z filmem oraz sztukami wizualnymi, którzy wykorzystywali motyw koła w swojej twórczości. Na zakończenie opisane zostały mandale wykonane przez pacjentkę w procesie terapii oraz mandala stworzona przez uczestniczkę warsztatów pokonferencyjnych
This paper presents briefly the history of the symbolism of the Circle in culture. The concept of „mandala” has been described from the perspective of C. G. Jung philosophy. A selection of works by several contemporary artists associated with cinematography and the visual arts, who used this motif in their works, has also been discussed. The last part of this paper contains a description of the mandalas made by a patient during her treatment, as well as the mandalas designed by a participant of post-conference workshops.

Realizamos una descripción comparativa del símbolo de la cruz, en tres espacios rituales distintos de la Ciudad de Rosario y Gran Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Estas manifestaciones de carácter simbólico representan los diversos contextos socioculturales en los que están insertas y los procesos históricos que les han dado origen. La Comunidad de San Francisquito está en la zona oeste de la ciudad y en el relato de su historia emerge el período caracterizado por la “Imagen del Cristo Crucificado” (Tiempo del Concilio Vaticano II). La cruz analizada y que caracteriza ese período fue modelada por un albañil que no era escultor, en agradecimiento y en conjunto con el párroco de la época. La Cruzada del Espíritu Santo es una Asociación Católica, y en nuestra ciudad tiene como referente al padre Ignacio, párroco de Natividad del Señor. A finales de 2006, la parroquia inauguró una cruz de metal de 12 metros, construida a pedido y en agradecimiento al padre Ignacio por un empresario metalúrgico en las afueras de la ciudad. En el Oratorio dedicado al “Gauchito Gil”, en Funes, Gran Rosario, se encuentra una cruz originaria de Mercedes, Corrientes, dónde está el centro de veneración a este santo popular. La misma es considerada sagrada por su origen, ya que es un exvoto dejado en el santuario por un devoto del Gaucho y que es encomendado para que se traslade a Rosario.

This paper presents an over - view of the changes in the image of Wrocław (Poland) in the post-war period. The most important and permanent symbols of the city have been listed: Rynek (the Market Place), Ratusz (the City Hall), Ostrów Tumski with Cathedral, green areas and parks, Hala Stulecia. The survey from 2007 shows a big importance of immaterial values in perception of Wrocław, that is the aura of the city, pleasant people and unique history. The paper also tries to predict possible changes in the image of Wrocław in the future.

Since the middle of the 1980s French Canadian novelist Sylvain Trudel has constantly put his characters in contentious situations from which they try to escape by way of creating alternative worlds at the same time real and fantastical. This device takes the characters away from their trite everyday life and into a symbolic and mystical universe. The synthème seems to be fit into that symbolic frame. Through the child’s point of view – which seems then to become some sort of secret language – each object belonging to the realm of the profane becomes tinted with a sacred meaning. Synthème and symbol would then be considered as vehicles for the sacred, that which shows through Sylvain Trudel’s novels.

The example of Mogila’a personal involvement in the cause of revival and reunification of Eastern Christianity in the Republic of Poland in the first half of the 17th century into one organism wins recognition among the supporters of the religious idea of unity. On the other hand, the methods that he used in the realization of his conception o f bringing the Churches together are an object of controversy among the Orthodox faithful. That is why today it is impossible to say univocally whether the Orthodox metropolitan can be a symbol of reconciliation.

Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje problem zmian w postrzeganiu symbolu jako istotnego czynnika życia duchowego w łonie filozofii neoplatońskiej. Wydaje się, że to starożytni neoplatonicy pogańscy pierwsi zdali sobie sprawę z tego, jak wielką rolę posiada symbol we wznoszeniu się duszy ku Bogu. Włączyli oni do rozumienia filozofii jako drogi do zjednoczenia z Jednym zaczerpniętą z Wyroczni Chaldejskich i Pism hermetycznych naukę o obrzędach teurgicznych, podczas których używano świętych symboli. Pierwsza część tego artykułu podejmuje próbę ukazania spotkania filozofii z tak pojętym rozumieniem symbolu. Szczególnie ważne dla rozumienia późniejszego pojmowania symboli przez Mikołaja z Kuzy miały używane w najwyższej części rytów teurgicznych symbole matematyczne. Druga część artykułu ukazuje w jaki sposób Pseudo-Dionizy Areopagita przekształca naukę swoich pogańskich poprzedników. Najbardziej istotnym elementem nauki Dionizego jest swego rodzaju wyłączenie symboli z porządku kosmicznego i umieszczenie ich w porządku zbawczym, który gruntuje się na Objawieniu. Prawdziwe symbole dla Pseudo-Dionizego to znaki sakramentalne obecne w liturgii Kościoła. Taka transformacja rozumienia symbolu sprawiła, że symbole matematyczne utraciły swoje wcześniejsze znaczenie. Powyższe analizy umożliwiły ukazanie w ostatniej części niniejszego artykułu kolejnej transformacji rozumienia symbolu, która miała miejsce w filozofii Mikołaja z Kuzy. Piętnastowieczne odrodzenie neoplatonizmu i pitagoreizmu spowodowało powrót do mistycznego traktowania symboli matematycznych, ale jednocześnie zostały one odarte ze rytualnego kontekstu obecnego w starożytnych tekstach.
This article considers the issue of changes in the understanding of symbols as an integral part of spiritual life in Neoplatonic philosophy. It seems that ancient Neoplatonic philosophers were the first who clearly realized the importance of symbols to spiritual life. However, it happened due to the influence of the mystical Chaldean and Egyptian thought transferred to philosophical investigation by the Chaldean oracles and Corpus hermeticum. The late Neoplatonic thought of Iamblichus and Eastern Neoplatonic schools used symbols and rituals as integral parts of philosophical investigation, understood as having a mystical goal. Especially mathematical symbols played a significant role, because they were used in the most advanced theurgical rituals. This analysis of the pagan Neoplatonic philosophy permits us to show properly the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, who creatively transformed the teaching of his pagan predecessors, by incorporating ancient Neoplatonic tradition into Christian theology. Pseudo-Dionysius excludes liturgical symbols from the order of the cosmos and transfers them to the plane of Salvation grounded in Biblical Revelation. Only true symbols are used in the liturgy of the Church, and thus mathematical symbols are no longer needed in the ascent of the soul to unity with God. The third part analyzes the meaning of symbolism in the thought of Nicolas of Cusa. Thanks to the rediscovery of ancient pagan Neoplatonism and Pythagorean thought, Cusanus also brings new life to the mystical meaning of mathematics. Mathematical symbols once again become an important part of the mystical ascent of the soul, but this time without their ritual context.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest zaprezentowanie specyficznego spojrzenia na dydaktykę, jej teorie i perspektywy praktyczne. Intencją autora jest ukazanie teoretycznych rozważań, opisujących zagadnienie symbolu w dydaktyce w zakresie zadań edukacyjnych szkoły współczesnej. Realizacja takiego celu wymaga zrekonstruowania podstawowych wyznaczników samego symbolu i jego ontologicznego ujęcia w perspektywie dydaktyki symbolu. Wyrażam przekonanie, że symbol może stać się kategorią humanistycznej teorii kształcenia ogólnego, ukazując jego możliwości realizacyjne.
The purpose of this text is to present a specific view on didactics, its theories and practical perspectives. The author intends to show theoretical considerations describing the issue of the symbol in teaching in the scope of educational tasks in a contemporary school. The implementation of this aim requires the reconstruction of the basic determinants of the symbol itself and its ontological approach to the didactics of the symbol. I am convinced that the symbol can become a category of humanistic theory for general education, showing its implementation capabilities.

The use of symbols in politics is an important topic that is subject of many research projects. From the viewpoint of political science, man creates various signs to which certain values and meanings are attributed. The article describes the results of a survey of the University of Warsaw students’ opinions concerning the presence of selected nationalistic and fascistising symbols in the public sphere. It also presents the current state of research concerning in politics, research questions, the formulated hypotheses and the research methods used. The article also describes selected symbols used by national, nationalistic and fascistic organisations. The article also outlines how the symbols associated with the extreme right are perceived by the young people in Poland and what significance it could have in the context of the current political trends. The author underlines the importance of public opinion polls concerning nationalistic and fascistising symbols, especially in the context of the growing wave of nationalism and the extreme right in Europe. The survey, carried out in 2021-2022, revealed that the majority of the respondents negatively appraised the selected nationalistic and fascistising symbols, such as the black sun, the falanga or the Celtic cross. At the same time, some respondents found it difficult to identify individual symbols, which point to the need for more educations as regards the history and ideologies associated with those symbols. The conclusions drawn from the survey indicate the need for more education and greater sensitivity to those issues among young people, who are the future of our society.

This article seeks to apply a cognitive definition to describe the symbolism of numbers. First, the theoretical aspects of the ethno-linguistic research method are outlined. This part presents the main foundations of the method, in particular, a cognitive definition as a mean of reconstructing the linguistic and cultural imaginary from the anthropocentric perspective. The concept of a symbol is presented as well, as a fundamental category in deciphering the meaning of the world by traditional culture bearers. The second part of the article presents a practical application of the theory, the cognitive definition of the number seven. The pre-existing sources (data from published dictionaries and monographs), as well as data collected by the author in the course of fieldwork, are ordered using “facets”, which reflect the semantic structure of the number seven in the folk culture. The cognitive definition of the number seven consists of the following facets: “name”, “collections”, “equivalences”, “number as a measure”, “semantics of the seventh item”. The proposed definition is not yet a completed project and can be extended by other domains.

This article is devoted to show the common grounds of Czech and other European literature. Images of birds have an imposing tradition of use in Czech literature. They are characterized by a variety of meanings and history of existence. There are both traditional and everyday folklore images, such as mythologeme of raven for the first one, and geese for the second, which have different semantic workloads. Discussion of the image of birds in the Czech literature is the basement of conclusions about the common ground that brings Czech and European literature together. Moreover, it also gives us more details about Czech national identity, the specifics of its literary schools and movements and the originality of the author’s vision of the world.
