Opis:
Dendrochronological analysis and measurements of selected features of the cones allowed to describe the influence of the over−regional factors and the origin of trees on the increment pattern of Norway spruce growing in north−western Poland outside its natural range. Trees from study sites in the Świerczyna Forest District that is located farther southwards than the others characterise different course of tree growth. One of these sites stands out from the analysed group in terms of biometric features of the cones. The origin of the trees seems to decide on the spatial distribution of the increment pattern in a little way.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the analysis of taxation characteristics of 20 Polish provenances of Picea abies (L.) Karst. In 1996, spruce from Istebna Bukowiec was taken as a standard provenance, which generated the highest yield while in 2001 – the provenance from Zwierzyniec Lubelski. This is indicative of an interaction between assessment results and age, as well as of the existence of spruce populations which are more productive than the spruce from Istebna Bukowiec. It is advisable to continue studies concerning identification of spruce genetic resources in Poland.

Opis:
The paper presents investigation on influence of root shortening on growth of 2−years−old Norway spruce seedlings after their development in the nursery. Measurements of basic morphological features reveal that strong length reduction increases regeneration of spruce root system. Together with that, slight decrease in height and diameter increment of the main shoot can be observed. Shortening of spruce roots improves significantly the balance between above− and belowground parts of the seedlings as well.

Opis:
As there are different views concerning the relationship between branching type and timber quality, the present paper attempts to evaluate this relationship. The studies were carried out on 32 sample plots located within the boundaries of two natural ranges of Norway spruce in Poland: north−eastern and south−western. The selected trees were examined for the type of branching, height and diameter at breast height, timber quality, size classes or groups in a butt−end section, and kinds or varieties of wood defects having an effect on timber grade classification. The analyses did not show any clear relationship between branching type and timber quality of Norway spruce.

Opis:
On the basis of sectional measurements of diameters of trees from 5 sawtimber spruce stands in the Beskid Śląski and Beskid Żywiecki, a non−linear shape model for spruce stems has been developed using a trigonometric model [Bi 2000]. Subsequently, the accuracy of the proposed solution has been evaluated and compared with the accuracy of a linear model [Socha 2000]. The discussed non−linear model for describing the shape of stems is quite satisfactory, however, with regard to the accuracy of the determination of the stem morphological curve and volume this solution is inferior to the linear model.

Opis:
The paper presents assessment results of the accuracy of uniform height curves developed for mountain spruce stands of Poland [Bruchwald, Wróblewski 1994]. The empirical material was collected in 171 spruce stands in Beskid Zachodni. Moreover, the relationship between the errors of uniform height curves and dendrometric characteristics of stands was also analysed. The research results demonstrated that the accuracy of uniform height curves is close to the accuracy obtained by applying the height curve developed for a given stand.

Opis:
The taper model presented in this paper was built for the mountain spruce stands in medium age classes. The model was described by multiple regression equations determining the thickness of a tree stem at different relative heights. Three variants of equations were proposed. In the simplest equation, d.b.h. and tree height were the explanatory variables while in the remaining equations height and thickness at half of the stem height were additional variables. The solution proposed in the paper allows for a precise estimation of the volume of stems and stem sections. At the same time it is free from systematic errors. The developed taper model can find practical application in determining tree shape, volume and timber assortment classes in forest inventories, standing tree quality assessment and stand pricing.

Paper presents two variants of the method of assessment the damage to the Norway spruce stands that were determined on the basis of the crown development. The first one is based on the tree's defoliation, the other – on the tree's damage index W that includes defoliation (feature A), condition of the tree−top (feature B) and tree's vitality (feature C). Mean defoliation or index W is used to determine one of the four classes of the stand damage. The accuracy of both variants was worked out and minimum number of sample trees required within assumed standard errors of assessed features. Alarming picture of Norway spruce stands in Polish Carpathians and Sudety Mountains appeared for the damaged stands prevail while there is no undamaged stands.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine whether differences exist between the selected characteristics of Norway spruce cones and seeds depending on their location in the crown. The study was performed in two spruce tree stands growing under mountainous conditions (the Beskidy Mountains, southern Poland). In winter 2015, the cones were collected from 60 standing trees located in the two selected seed stands – Ujsoły and Rycerka. From each tree, the cones were collected from three crown zones: top, central and bottom differing in terms of light conditions. Two characteristics of the cones and six characteristics of the seeds were analysed. To determine quantitative and qualitative traits of seeds standard methods for seed testing were applied. Significant differences between the populations were determined for cone weight and fraction of full seeds, weight of 1000 seeds and germination capacity. The crown zones differed significantly in terms of fraction of cones in the parts of the crown and mass of one cone as well as weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity. Moreover, a significant intra−population variation was observed for a majority of the analysed characteristics (fraction of full seeds, weight of one cone, weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy, and germination capacity). However, no statistically significant interaction between population and crown zone was observed. A significantly lower contribution of cones in the bottom zone of the crown may affect the economic viability of the commercial harvest. On the other hand some of the important seeds traits (e.g. weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity) were significantly better in the bottom and central part of the crown than in the top zone. There are no justified circumstances (both qualitative and quantitative) to perform the cone harvest only from the top zone of the crown.

Opis:
The objective of this research was to describe the horizontal distribution of trees in the managed Norway spruce stands located in the Sławno Forest District. The knowledge of that stand feature may be useful for the forest management in natural as well as in artificial stands. This paper presents the analysis of the spatial pattern of trees belonging to the different diameter classes in two separate stands. Majority of the living trees in both stands characterised with random spatial distribution. Trees with small (≤20 cm) dbh were localised in groups the most often.

The paper presents the criteria for assessment of the damage to Norway spruce determined on the basis of its crown development. Three features were included: condition of the assimilation apparatus (feature A), condition of the tree−top (feature B) and tree vitality (feature C). Feature A is based on the defoliation. Feature B assesses the length of the last height increments and their branching models. Feature C includes the loss of branches in the middle part of the crown, the presence of branches of 2nd and higher orders as well as condition of proventive sprouts (developed from dormant buds). Determined criteria may be applied in the methods of assessment of the damage to stands and larger forest objects e.g. management region, forest region, nature−forest regions.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to determine the testing standard of root growth potential of European tree species: pine, spruce and larch. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during the dormancy season (February−March). The experimental variants consisted of two methods of seedling storage: the cold store and traditional storage pit. The obtained results revealed that the tested species had poor root growth capacity when compared to Burdett scale and their response range is between 0 and 3. It was noted that the storage method stimulates root production. As a rule the seedlings stored in the pit had higher root growth response than those stored in the cold store.

Opis:
The study was conducted in 2015 in six spruce stands situated in different forest districts administratively belonging to the Regional Directorate of Forests State in Krosno. Each spruce population was represented by 30 trees and assessed in terms of their current health status. Genetic analyses were performed based on shoot samples from each tree using nine nuclear DNA markers and one mitochondrial DNA marker (nad1). The health status of the trees was described according to the classification developed by Szczepkowski and Tarasiuk (2005) and the correlation between health classes and the level of genetic variability was computed with STATISTICA (α = 0.05). Nuclear DNA analyses revealed a low level of genetic variability among spruce populations (only 3% of the total genetic variation (FST = 0.028) and a high variability within populations (97%). The total heterozygosity in all stands (HT) was calculated as 0.646. Based on UPGMA analysis, the most genetically similar populations are spruce stands in the Bieszczady National Park and the Ustrzyki Dolne Forest District, which have the smallest genetic divergence of all populations (DN = 0.0165). Our analysis of the mitochondrial gene nad1 revealed the presence of six different haplotypes “a”, “a1”, “b”, “c”, “d” and “d1”. Comprising 56% of all haplotypes, “a” was the most common showing a predominant impact on spruce migration from the Carpathian area. The analysis based on mitochondrial markers (by Nei) revealed a heterozygosity of 0.525. Based on the observations of disease symptoms, 29% of the trees belong to health class 1,30% to class 2,28% to class 3 and class 4 contains 13% of trees. The comparison between health status and the level of genetic variation in the analyzed stands showed a positive correlation. Spruce stands with better health were also characterized by a greater degree of genetic variability. Since most of the investigated spruce populations shared the mitochondrial haplotype “a”, we have ascertained their Hercynian- Carpathian origin. Only one stand (Cisna) had a high frequency (43.3%) of the Nordic haplotype “c” suggesting that this provenance is derived from the Baltic post-glacial refugium of P. abies in Europe.
