Opis:: The paper is an attempt to determine the testing standard of root growth potential of European tree species: pine, spruce and larch. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during the dormancy season (February−March). The experimental variants consisted of two methods of seedling storage: the cold store and traditional storage pit. The obtained results revealed that the tested species had poor root growth capacity when compared to Burdett scale and their response range is between 0 and 3. It was noted that the storage method stimulates root production. As a rule the seedlings stored in the pit had higher root growth response than those stored in the cold store.

Opis:: Debarking of trees and foraging on the phloem is an economical problem for forestry in North America. Scientists in America investigated the feeding behavior of black bears (Ursus americanus) during the spring while this problem was only partially investigated in Poland. In the Polish Carpathians most damage occurs on coniferous trees such as fir Abies alba, larch Larix decidua and spruce Picea abies.

Opis:: Every year, scaling plants buy (up to tens of tons) cones which needs to be peeled. After the process of scaling, the cones themselves are waste, which is partly sold. The problem of waste disposal is especially severe in plants where the processing is performed by electrically-powered scaling cabinets, but the problem does not apply to facilities where pellets are burned to produce heat. We examined the heat of combustion and calorific value of the residues from scaling plants that can be used in the production of refined wood fuels. The residues consist of the empty cones of pine, spruce, larch as well as husks and stems of silver fir. Additionally, we conducted measurements of the heat of combustion for wood and cones of each species and compared them to their respective calorific values The results revealed that the average calorific value of the cones is in the range 17.81–19.86 MJ/kg. Our work showed that empty cones have a significantly higher calorific value and heat of combustion than the wood of spruce, larch and fir. In the case of pine, cones and wood did not differ significantly. These results led us to the conclusions that empty de-scaled cones can be utilized as a valuable primary solid fuel or fuel additive for the production of refined products for the local market. Due to the low annual production of cones in comparison to other materials such as sawdust and wood chips, pine cones should be used as a supplement, to enrich fuels of inferior quality by enhancing their energetic properties.

Opis:: The main objective of this study was to demonstrate a relationship between the direction and effectiveness of impact of particular tree species on soil properties and the initial site fertility. The studies were conducted on two neighbouring experimental plots with different forest site types (fresh mixed coniferous forest – BMśw and fresh mixed deciduous forest – LMśw). The analysed species Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), European larch (Larix deciduas Mill.), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) and penduculate oak (Quercus robur L.) were planted in three replications on 400 m2 plots. It was stated that: 1) the humification processes ongoing under the canopy of the analysed tree species are, to a large degree, determined by the type of forest site; 2) under the same tree species the content of calcium and nitrogen in the nitrate form was found to by markedly lower in the BMśw forest site; 3) in the BMśw forest site, the pH and electrolytic conductivity of the soil under the majority of the analysed tree species were lower; 4) the degrading impact of coniferous species on soil was noticeably stronger on the poorer BMśw forest site.

Opis:: The seeds of forest trees usually transfer numerous fungi species, including pathogens, facultative parasites and saprotrophs. The aim of the present work was to determine qualitative and quantitative composition of fungi inhabiting the seeds of 10 trees species i.e.: birch (Betula pendula Roth.), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), red oak (Quercus rubra L.), common oak (Quercus robur L.), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.), black alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaerth.), fir (Abies alba Mill.), European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst). The seed samples were obtained courtesy of 5 forest districts located in the south−eastern Poland. Mycological analysis was performed in the years 2012−2013. Each time, the study included 100 surface−disinfected seeds of particular plant species. As a result of the study about 2000 colonies of fungi representing 26 genera and above 39 species were isolated. The most frequently occurring species were: Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Trichoderma koningii, Epicoccum nigrum, Phoma spp. and Cylindrocarpon destructans. Moreover Discula spp., Phyllosticta spp., Pyrenochaeta spp., Rhizoctonia solani, Alternaria consortiale were obtained only from the seeds of deciduous trees while Truncatella angustata and Sphareopsis sapinea exclusively from the seeds of coniferous trees. The genus Fusarium was represented by 8 species and among them F. avenaceum, F. oxysporum and F. sporotrichioides dominated. Moreover Penicillium spp., Epicoccum nigrum, Trichoderma koningii, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Chaetomium globosum and Trichothecium roseum were commonly isolated while the other species of fungi were present in smaller numbers. Isolation of numerous fungi species which may cause mold of sowing material, seedling blight as well as leaves and needles spot, indicates their big threat for seeds during storage and for plants in the initial period of growth in a nursery. The obtained results show that the seeds, besides the infected soil, are a very important source of infection for young plants.
