The paper discusses the issue of tannery sewage sludge management as one of the barriers in reaching sustainable development in the tanning industry. The Authors present the main characteristics, and its origins, of tannery sludge limiting the possibilities of their treatment and review the proposed solutions found in literature. The paper focuses on identifying the strong and weak points of the most commonly used methods used for sewage sludge treatment as well as presents some novel approaches which remain at laboratory stage.

The article examines the scientific vision of the development of Ukrainian industry as a key factor of the economic system that can be modernized and formed a basis for industrial growth, through which Ukraine will be able to achieve the global goals of sustainable development proclaimed by the 70th UN Assembly. The authors consider new approaches to diversification and integrated proportional industrial development with the possibility of preserving and restoring both traditional industrial manufacture. Purpose: The main aim of the research presented in this article was identification and categorization of the main production waste generated in the textile and clothing industry and their impact on the environment in the context of sustainable development, together with the presentation of several proposals for solutions to the problem of production waste. Nowadays, through the newly emerging EU directives, the increasing population and consumer lifestyle, thus the huge amounts of generated waste, the problem of waste coming from textile and clothing industry will increase and it will be more important to find new solutions to it. Design/methodology/approach: In the research presented in this article, an analysis of the literature on the processes of the textile and clothing industry was used; waste generation from these industries and their impact on the environment along with the concept of sustainable development. Findings: The management of waste from the textile and clothing industry is an important factor influencing the sustainable development of the economy, both in the world and in Poland. Under the newly created EU directives, it will be a very important issue in the future, which will require urgent addressing this topic and finding optimal solutions in the context of sustainable development or the circular economy. Research limitations/implications: In the future, research will be continued in the field of production waste management in the textile and clothing industry, their disposal or recycling. Practical implications: This article provides an overview of quantitative research and diversity of waste from the textile and clothing industry in Poland and in the world. This review shows the importance and scale of the problem and allows for further continuation of research to manage the generated waste. The author has also collected concepts for the further management of post-production waste, which she presented in the article, but they require a broader and more detailed analysis. Originality/value: Based on empirical research, the article shows the scale of the problem that, through the new EU directives on the circular economy and sustainable development, will be a forward-looking and important issue. Additionally, the article presents concepts for waste management from the industrial and consumer perspective.

Głównymi wyzwaniami dla omawianej gałęzi przemysłu są: ograniczenie zużycia energii w procesie produkcyjnym oraz wprowadzanie regulacji dotyczących zrównoważonego rozwoju na poziomie globalnym, aby zapewnić konkurencyjność dla producentów w różnych miejscach na świecie.
The article presents the concept, goals, directions and challenges for sustainable development in the steel industry. The implementation of changes towards sustainable development will help influence environmental protection and reduce climate change and environmental degradation by ensuring resources for future generations and the possibility of further development of civilization. However, the steel industry, as one of the pillars of economic development, is particularly vulnerable to various types of production regulations. The main challenges for the industry in question are to reduce energy consumption in the production process and to introduce sustainability regulations on a global level to ensure competitiveness for producers in different parts of the world.

Managing a sustainable supply chain is a concept related to many areas of the economy. Its efficient functioning depends on the implementation of SDG activities and the development of industry (first-fourth/fifth industrial revolution). Due to the likelihood of different priorities in the implementation of the sustainable development goals, it is important to build such relationships, e.g. in the supply chain, so that their implementation could take place under similar conditions. Digitization, or the circular economy concept (CE), create an opportunity for the SME sector to build relationships as part of industry networks, for instance, where the managed supply chain would have a common and realistic goal to achieve. This goal will be a priority in business models based on sustainable development. The article presents the results of research regarding the furniture industry in Poland (key industry, referred to as smart specialization). The results of the analysis show that the industry has a large production potential, and the natural resources used in it are constantly increasing. However, there are doubts raised by the lack of stability in the dynamics of the sold production in the industry. Ultimately, the business model of the industry supply chain should focus on the environmental aspect (sustainable management of the raw material supply chain) and on eco-friendly consumption (sustainable management of the product supply chain), so that it can be managed in a sustainable way.

The paper illustrates the introduction of ecological innovations by a Polish company operating within the rendering industry. The investment resulted not only in the management of large amounts of waste, but also enabled their re-use, thus contributing to environmental protection. However, this is not the only effect of the investments. An improved innovative production process enabled the company to improve its financial situation and, consequently, to gain the position of one of the leaders in the rendering industry in Poland. The methods applied in the research included a descriptive method, a case study method, a personal interview and ratio analysis of financial statements from the examined company. The study used data and materials provided by the company.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie przykładu wprowadzenia innowacji o charakterze ekologicznym przez polskie przedsiębiorstwo działające w przemyśle utylizacyjnym. Inwestycja ta spowodowała nie tylko zagospodarowanie znacznych ilości odpadów, ale umożliwiła także ich ponowne wykorzystanie, przyczyniając się tym samym do ochrony środowiska naturalnego. Nie jest to jednak jedyny efekt przeprowadzonych inwestycji. Udoskonalony, innowacyjny proces produkcji pozwolił przedsiębiorstwu poprawić sytuację finansową oraz w konsekwencji osiągnąć pozycję jednego z liderów w przemyśle utylizacyjnym w Polsce. Metodami badawczymi były metoda opisowa, analiza przypadku, metoda wywiadu osobistego oraz analiza wskaźnikowa sprawozdań finansowych badanej firmy. Wykorzystano dane i materiały udostępnione przez przedsiębiorstwo.

Kryzys klimatyczny i jego następstwa stanowią dziś temat rozpalający szeroką dyskusję wśród wielu środowisk. Silną presję na władze państwowe, ale także pośrednio na świat biznesu, nałożył w 2015 roku ONZ, uchwalając Agendę 2030. Chęć przystąpienia do działań na rzecz zrównoważonego rozwoju (ZR) wyraziły 193 państwa. Jak odnajduje się w tym biznes? Jak radzą sobie branże zwyczajowo uznawane za szkodliwe dla środowiska, np. górnictwo? Czy oznacza to ich koniec? Te i inne pytania rodzą się po zapoznaniu z Agendą 2030, znalezienie odpowiedzi na nie stanowi cel niniejszego artykułu. Okazuje się, że biznes, także sektory o wydawałoby się negatywnym wydźwięku, w kontekście ich wpływu na środowisko, z nowego ładu potrafią czynić przewagę konkurencyjną. Aspekty związane z ZR znajdują swoje odzwierciedlenie w znakomitej większości strategii największych spółek wydobywczych na świecie. Kierunki wyznaczane przez ZR przynoszą korzyści otoczeniu przedsiębiorstw, ale już dziś widać wyraźny trend, w którym spółki swoją odpowiedzialną i zrównoważoną postawę starają się przekuwać na własny sukces.
The climatic crisis and its consequences are the issues provoking and an extensive discussion among various parties. A fierce pressure on authorities and, indirectly, on business representatives was posed by the UN in 2015 by adopting the “2030 Agenda” (Sustainable Development Goals). 193 countries have declared the willingness to join the initiatives aimed at sustainable development. How has the business answered to that call? Is any progress being made in the traditionally polluting industries, i.e. the mining sector? Does it mean that their time has come to an end? The above is one of many doubts rising upon getting familiar with the SDG. In the meantime, it turns out that the business, including the environment-harming industries, is learning how to benefit from the new order and make it their competitive advantage. The sustainable development initiatives are being reflected in the vast majority of mining companies’ strategies. Directions set by the principles of sustainable development are aimed at bringing benefits for the business environment. However, we can already see that there is a clear tendency of companies attempting to make use of their responsible and sustainable approach. They consider it as an important part of their future success.

Zrównoważony rozwój jest koncepcją wypracowaną w drodze wieloletnich negocjacji i prac na arenie międzynarodowej, której głównym celem jest poprawa jakości życia społeczeństw w czystym środowisku naturalnym. Skupia ona w sobie trzy aspekty, tj.: ekologiczny, społeczny i ekonomiczny, a realizowanie działań w wymienionych trzech obszarach zmierza do osiągnięcia efektywnego rozwoju. W artykule zaprezentowano teoretyczne podstawy koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju i branży spożywczej w odniesieniu do polskiej gospodarki oraz działania, jakie powinny podejmować wszystkie przedsiębiorstwa spożywcze, aby przedstawiana koncepcja była skuteczna. Celem pracy jest wskazanie, iż w przedsiębiorstwach przemysłu spożywczego korzystne jest realizowanie działań wspierających zrównoważony rozwój, a także jak te działania wyglądają. Wykorzystane w artykule metody badań polegają na analizie danych zastanych. Analizie zostały poddane istniejące już dane wtórne, wcześniej zgromadzone i przetworzone przez instytucje publiczne, co jest metodą deskresearch. Ponadto, zastosowano jednocześnie analizę treści i pisemnych komunikatów tekstowych. Część artykułu, na którą składa się przegląd działań, jakie powinno się realizować w przedsiębiorstwach przemysłu spożywczego, powstała w wyniku gruntownej analizy literatury dotyczącej: zrównoważonego wznoszenia budynków, zrównoważonego personelu, zrównoważonego zarządzania, ekologicznych innowacji produktowych, opakowaniowych i technologicznych, zrównoważonej produkcji i utylizacji odpadów opakowaniowych. W części badawczej artykułu wyjaśniono, w jaki sposób przedsiębiorstwa przemysłu spożywczego powinny realizować swoją działalność, by była ona zgodna z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju. Dzięki temu możliwe jest poznanie odpowiedzi na podane pytania badawcze. Czy przemysł spożywczy ma duży wpływ na powstawanie produktów opakowaniowych? Jaki powinien być zrównoważony produkt, co go cechuje i jak go projektować? Jacy powinni być pracownicy zatrudnieni w przedsiębiorstwach charakteryzujących się cechami zrównoważenia, jak również czym wyróżniają się współpracownicy i dostawcy. W jaki sposób powinna być realizowana produkcja, aby w jak najmniejszym stopniu negatywnie oddziaływać na człowieka i przyrodę? Które surowce i w jaki sposób oszczędzać, żeby nie doprowadzić do ich całkowitego zużycia?
Sustainable development is a concept developed after years of negotiations and disputes on the international stage. Its main goal is to improve the quality of life of societies in a clean environment. It focuses on three aspects: ecological, social, and economic. It is imperative to carry out the activities in these three areas so that all the problems important for building a long-term business strategy are addressed. This will make it possible to achieve effective development. In this paper, the author presents the theoretical foundations of the concept of sustainable development in the food industry in relation to the Polish economy and the actions that all food businesses should take in order for the presented concept to be effective. The purpose of the work is to show why businesses in the food industry are benefiting from actions that promote sustainable development and how they behave. The research methods used involve analysis of available data. The existing secondary data previously collected and processed by public institutions are analyzed (a desk research method). In addition, content analysis is conducted, where written messages are examined. The paper, which includes an overview of activities recommended for food industry companies, was developed through a thorough literary analysis of sustainable building, sustainable staffing, sustainable management, innovations regarding ecological products, packaging and technologies, sustainable production and disposal of packaging waste. The research section explains how food business operators should implement their activities to ensure that they are sustainable. Thanks to this, it is possible to find the answers to the following research questions: Does the food industry have a major impact on the formation of packaging products? What should the sustainable product be, what characterizes it and how to design it? What should employees working for sustainable companies be like? What should be the characteristics of the collaborators and suppliers of a sustainable company? How should production be implemented so as to have a minimal negative impact on people and the natural environment? Which raw materials to save, and how to do it so as not to exhaust them completely?

The circular economy is the economic model that has been applied for a long time in the world. This model is applied at all three levels: micro (enterprise-level), intermediate (industry level, industrial zone level), and macro-level (local level, regional level, or national level). Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry has been having important contributions to the socio-economic development of Vietnam. However, this industry also causes lots of issues about environmental pollution. In the context of resource depletion, environmental pollution and the cost of exploiting and processing increases with the deep exploiting process; the tastes of utilizing resources, minimizing environmental pollution, and creating more value-added for this industry are inevitable requirements. Because of the tasks, applying the circular economy model into this industry (both intermediate and micro-level) is the urgent solution for the sustainable development of the Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry. The paper uses a combination of research methods such as theoretical research, case study research, statistical data analysis, etc., to propose the circular economy model for the Vietnamese Coal Mining Industry and some solutions to deploy this model into the industry's operations towards sustainable development.

At present, the development and optimization of methods to eliminate the consequences of soil contamination with hydrocarbons is gaining increasing economic and social importance; it is the basis for sustainable development of the oil industry. Within the frames of the scientific research, a review of literature was carried out in the sphere of utilization of organic wastes from the food industry in reclamation of oil-contaminated soils; an experimental study of efficiency of the use of wastes from the brewing industry in the process of bioremediation of oil-contaminated soils was conducted and phytotoxicity of these wastes was determined. Experimental research was conducted at different initial concentrations of oil in the soil, which allowed to establish the optimal range of oil pollution level at which the efficiency of brewing waste use is the highest. Thus, at low concentrations (1000–2000 mg/kg), the dynamics of oil concentration decrease in the soil remained preserved throughout the whole duration of the experiment, and the efficiency of oil destruction in the soil exceeded 98%, which confirmed the overall efficiency of application of brewing waste for reclamation of oil-contaminated soils.

Opis:
Coal is one of the most precious mineral resource, mining and mineral processing contributes to the economic development. In Vietnam, coal mining industry is economically profitable. However, this industry shows several disadvantages such as low productivity, wasting resources, negative environmental impact. Therefore, the State of Vietnam need to improve the coal mining governance to raise revenues, avoid wasting resources and meet the requirements of sustainable development. The paper aims to evaluate State governance of coal mining industry in Vietnam, and shows the advantages and disadvantages of this governance. Therefore, this paper proposes the strategies and solutions to improve coal mining governance in Vietnam towards sustainable development. The structure of the paper includes: (i) Literature review of the importance and requirements of state governance of coal mining industry towards sustainable development; (ii) State governance of coal mining industry in Vietnam; (iii) Proposals to improve State governance of coal mining industry towards sustainable development in Vietnam.
