This article presents the most important aspects of the sustainable development policy and indicates the instruments that have an impact on its shaping. In addition, attention was drawn to the fact that issues related to sustainable development (mainly in the context of spatial planning and investment) and environmental protection are also discussed as leading topics in discussions on the quality of life in Europe. In the conclusions for the future, points were identified that prove to be the most important goals for the current and future development of Europe as a whole, namely: promoting sustainable spatial development; strengthening business location; infrastructure optimization; ensuring social stability in areas such as health, education and social policy; careful use of natural resources (promoting biodiversity and supporting material cycle optimization), i.e. helping to ensure that the natural foundations of life are available to the next generation as much as possible; continuation of advanced energy policy (reduction of CO2 emissions in line with target values); strengthening education (continuing to consolidate the education system, improving the conditions for employing teachers, as well as ensuring the financial stability of educational institutions); ensuring the safety of; effective positioning of regions (cooperation between regions that jointly implement key projects and take greater account of common interests at national level).

Mimo nasilającej się krytyki PKB, brak alternatywnej metody pomiaru dobrobytu społecznego powoduje, że miernik obejmujący tylko sferę gospodarczą nadal pozostaje kluczowym parametrem ocen i porównań międzynarodowych. Wypracowanie i upowszechnienie uniwersalnej metodyki pomiaru jakości życia stanowi zatem poważne wyzwanie skierowane w stronę środowiska akademickiego i praktyków. Zdaniem autora, silne, wzajemne relacje nowego paradygmatu rozwoju trwałego z kategorią jakości życia wynikają bezpośrednio z samej jego definicji. Po pierwsze, na podstawie Raportu Brundtland i Deklaracji z Rio można stwierdzić, że rozwój trwały to taki rozwój, który zapewnia zaspokojenie potrzeb i osiągnięcie wysokiej jakości życia współczesnemu społeczeństwu bez uszczerbku dla możliwości realizacji potrzeb przyszłych pokoleń. Po drugie, idea rozwoju trwałego oparta na ładzie zintegrowanym ściśle odpowiada holistycznemu charakterowi jakości życia. Można więc uznać, że realizacja zasad rozwoju trwałego jest tożsama z dążeniami do wysokiej jakości życia, a wskaźniki cząstkowe opisujące rozwój trwały można z powodzeniem wykorzystać do określenia jakości życia.
Despite rising criticism of using GDP as a measure of social welfare, lack of an alternative method causes this purely economic indicator to remain the key parameter for assessments and international comparisons. Developing a universal methodology for measuring the quality of life is thus a serious challenge for both academics and practitioners. According to the author, the strong relationship between the new development paradigm and the quality of life stems directly from the very definition of sustainable development. Firstly, on the basis of the Brundtland Report and the Rio Declaration, it can be concluded that sustainable development is a development that provides satisfaction, fulfils needs and achieves a high quality of life in modern society without prejudice to the possibility of meeting the needs of future generations. Secondly, the idea of sustainable development based on integrated governance closely corresponds to the holistic nature of the quality of life. It can therefore be concluded that the implementation of the principles of sustainable development is synonymous with aspirations to a high quality of life and partial indicators describing sustainable development can successfully be used to gauge the quality of life.

There is a widespread perception that sustainable development is an optimal way of development for the world globally. Sustainability requires a reorientation of global, national and local policies in a way to put the long-term quality of life as a priority. Around the world governments at all levels have been learning how to work with the idea of sustainable development and searching for ways to introduce it into practice. Over the last two decades, there has been an intensive discourse and research about measuring sustainable development. Many initiatives have been undertaken to introduce indicators for monitoring and measuring progress towards sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the meaning of a category of quality of life for sustainable development from global to a local perspective. It gives recommendations for policymaking and suggestions for future research. The paper reviews key findings, research gaps and also discusses policy implications in terms of the importance of quality of life for sustainable development.

This article is aimed to show differences in quality of life regarding education and employment in a given area. The research hypothesis assumes the presence of the difference in quality of life across Poland and of interrelation between the quality of life and the living standards. The studies were conducted on a group of respondents selected intentionally from three provinces. The provinces were selected using a multidimensional analysis and the criterion for selection was the living standards of Polish residents. The studies were conducted as part of the individual Research Grant launched in 2011 under the title: “Living standards and quality of life among Polish residents” 1708/B/H03/2011/40 from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

At the macro level, marketing plays the role of the supply system of a market economy. The basic concept of macro marketing is that of a market system. Macro marketing has traditionally viewed market systems as drivers of economic development and wealth growth. Thus, marketing is seen as a driving force of economic development and, as such – of changes in societal systems. An important part of the development of marketing systems is related to the development of information technology. Thus, it seems interesting to find out the connections in the triangle “information technologies – marketing – welfare”. The focus of this paper is the study of the correlation between the factors indicative of the development of marketing systems, information technologies and the level of welfare. Correlation analysis of data for 58 countries of the world shows that there is a statistically significant correlation between the level of technological development, the degree of Internet penetration, level of economic development and the index of sustainable development. However, the degree of correlation between the indicators of technological development, the level of Internet penetration, the level of economic development and well-being, on the one hand, and the indicator of sustainable development of societal systems, on the other hand, is insignificant. This result can be attributed to a supposed by some scholars contribution of marketing to a growing entropy of societal systems.

In this paper we have given a short account of the shortfalls of neoclassical economics, far removed from Aristotelian political economics, which was considered by him as the art of household management. The objective of it was a flourishing life or the Good Life. The main aim of humankind is the development of a desirable way of living and sustaining the quality of life, also for future generations. In order to achieve that goal, people created a number of institutions to facilitate achieving that end. All institutions, as they are devised for human purposes, cannot be outside human control, they should serve society. In the paper it is argued that the economy, as one of the social institutions, should play a particular role in enhancing human and non-human well-being. The paper contains the proposal of a unified system of measuring institutional and eco-system performance. Moreover, it is argued that among many proposals for the development of new proposals for studying economic matters, ecological economics is the most suitable for researching into the quality of life.

The concept of sustainable development is used in a growing number of new contexts (ever-modernising technologies, developing science, environmental protection, politics) and levels (global, regional, national, institutional, personal). The concept differs depending on an area in which it is used. Business, technologies and politics use typical, already existing approaches to sustainable development. The projection/transposition of sustainable development paradigm into the sphere of education, science, technologies, economy, environmental protection and politics acquire the specifics of a sphere, namely structure and terminology, and has different elements. A wide field of human activity and different levels of the implementation of the concept of sustainable development make the analysis of this development and its implementation in the education sector more difficult. Both scientific and practical educational discourse need common parameters, common dimensions which unify the different areas of sustainable development and allow educators to accurately convey a full picture of this development. In this article, we will highlight educational approach towards a sustainability paradigm by analysing the common dimensions of sustainable development. We will talk about the levels of the implementation of sustainable development by concentrating on education at a personal level. Having applied the triangle of the dimensions of sustainable development (Place, Permanence, Persons), created by L. Seghezzo, to explain and analyse the concept of quality of life, in the article, we will present a three dimensional model of education for sustainable development.
Termin rozwój zrównoważony jest używany w coraz większej ilości nowych kontekstów (technologicznym, rozwoju nauki, ochrony środowiska, polityki) i na różnych poziomach (globalnym, regionalnym, krajowym, instytucjonalnym, indywidualnym). Konsekwentnie będzie on także różnorodnie interpretowany. W świecie biznesu, techniki i polityki wykorzystywane jest tradycyjne, już istniejące podejście. Projekcja/transpozycja paradygmatu zrównoważonego rozwoju w sferę edukacji, nauki, techniki, ekonomii, ochrony środowiska i polityki wymaga określenia struktury i terminologii, składających się z różnych elementów. Różnorodność ludzkich działań na różnych poziomach wdrażania koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju powodują, że badanie tego rozwoju i jego impelmentacja w sektorze edukacyjnym to trudne zadanie. Dyskurs edukacyjny, zarówno naukowy jak i praktyczny, wymaga pewnych wspólnych parametrów i odniesień, które ujednolicają różne konteksty zrównoważoności i pozwalają edukatorom trafnie przekazać wielowymiarowość tego rozwoju. W tej pracy skoncentrowano się na edukacyjnym podejściu do paradygmatu zrównoważonego rozwoju poprzez analizę jego składowych. Przedstawione zostaną poziomy implementacji rozwoju zrównoważonego w odniesieniu do edukacji na poziomie indywidualnym. Dzięki odwołaniu do wprowadzonego przez L. Seghezz‘ego trójwymiarowego podejścia do wymiarów rozwoju zrównoważonego (Miejsce, Trwałość, Ludzie) możliwa będzie analiza i wyjaśnienie koncepcji jakości życia, co prowadzić będzie do prezentacji trójwymiarowego modelu edukacji dla zrównoważonego rozwoju.

The focus of this article is on the conformity of quality of life indicators reformed by the institutions of the European Union with the concept of sustainable development. The reform was launched in 2009 under the title GDP and beyond – Measuring progress in a changing world. The issue is presented from the perspective of conclusions drawn on the basis of philosophical analysis of the problems we need to solve in order to design the indicators adopted to sustainable development concept, such as defining quality of life, needs, objective and subjective quality of life measurements, existence of universal quality of life indicators (on the example of gross domestic product). In order to describe the tools used to perform the analysis, the issue of theoretical status of sustainable development philosophy is approached.

Artykuł jest próbą prezentacji głównych wymiarów filozoficznego dyskursu na temat zrównoważonego rozwoju. Dotyczy takich kwestii, jak: - swoistość filozoficznego dyskursu w stosunku do perspektyw poznawczych nauk społecznych i ekonomicznych; - filozoficzne podstawy zasady zrównoważonego rozwoju; - filozoficzne ujęcia zrównoważonego rozwoju wraz z ich typologią (ze względu na kryteria ontologiczne, antropologiczne, aksjologiczne i historiozoficzne), - filozoficzne problemy zrównoważonego rozwoju (jakość życia, sprawiedliwość, racjonalność, postęp i utopia). W artykule są rozpatrywane zagadnienia potrzeby prowadzenia badań filozoficznych w zakresie zrównoważonego rozwoju, sposobów rozumienia pojęcia filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju (w tym potrzeby konstruowania tego typu koncepcji filozoficznych) oraz sensowności realizacji projektu zrównoważonego rozwoju jako kolejnej wersji sfalsyfikowanej - zdaniem współczesnych filozofów - oświeceniowej filozofii społecznej.
The article is trying to present main dimensions of philosophical discussion about sustainable development. It is touching issues like: - peculiarity of philosophical discussion in relation to the cognition perspectives of social and economical sciences; - philosophical basics of sustainable development principle; - philosophical depiction of sustainable development with its classification (including cognitional, antrophological, axiological and historical criteria), - philosophical problems of sustainable development (the quality of life, justice, rationality, progress and utopia). The article is considering the need to conduct philosophical researches in the area of sustainable development, ways of understanding the concept of sustainable development (including the needs of formulating such philosophical conceptions) and reasonableness of realization of sustainable development project as - in opinion of contemporary philosophers - another forgeable version of Enlightenment social philosophy.

Na potrzeby artykułu przyjęto, że zrównoważony rozwój jest traktowany nie tylko jako zdolność systemu do utrzymania zrównoważonego rozwoju terytorialnego w zakresie ochrony środowiska, ale także uwzględnia jego cechy społeczno-kulturowe. Zdaniem autorki polityka rozwoju ekologicznego powinna być integralną częścią reform strukturalnych koniecznych do wspierania silnego, bardziej zrównoważonego i sprzyjającego włączeniu społecznemu wzrostu gospodarczego, który można zainicjować poprzez następujące działania: • zwiększanie wydajności; • zwiększenie zaufania inwestorów poprzez większą przewidywalność; • otwarcie nowych rynków poprzez stymulowanie popytu na „zielone towary, usługi i technologie”; • konsolidację fiskalną poprzez mobilizację dochodów z podatków ekologicznych oraz poprzez eliminację szkodliwych dla środowiska subsydiów.
We live in a society where economic growth has become as a mantra for all politicians and businessmen. It is obvious that economic growth is crucial with regards to quality of life, happiness, prosperity, education, health, etc. However, after reaching a certain level of life it turns out that economic growth is no longer so important. In the paper the author attempts to identify and justify the most important dilemmas, which according to the author are to be found in contemporary discussions about economic growth and sustainable development.
