Opis:
Innovation in construction is presented as a necessary aspect in the answer that the construction industry must provide to solve its negative impact on the environment. Original and innovative research is only part of the work to be accomplished. More important is the implementation of innovation in practice, where traditions are strongly rooted in society, and safety and long term reliability are required. Lessons from nature and study of durable examples handed down from the pasts serve as guidelines to innovative approaches that contribute to sustainability.

Opis:
One of the biggest challenges of recent civil engineering is the need to make it sustainable by implementing environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions. The search for new materials and technologies is an important and current issue also in the strengthening of soft soils. In the soft soil stabilization process, conventional materials (cement and lime) are being replaced by waste materials, such as stone slurry waste, spent coffee grounds, rice husk ash, crushed waste concrete and glass, natural fibers, sawdust, waste tire rubber and plastic waste materials. Appropriate waste admixture content contributes to soil reinforcement by reducing compressibility and increasing maximum density and shear strength. The application of waste as an admixture is an economically and ecologically beneficial method of soil improvement. It eliminates the cost of materials and helps to reduce the problem of waste disposal, which is sometimes very expensive and problematic. The study aims to analyze the effect of waste materials on improving the physical and mechanical properties of soils based on the research results presented in the literature.

Opis:
Smart design upcycling of post-production display panels into new creative materials to support the sustainable development of a circular economy in the furniture industry. The economy is currently transforming from a linear economy to a circular economy. This is increasingly supported by policy, legislation, industry, and academia. A circular economy means more efficient management of renewable natural resources, which has implications for businesses’ bioeconomies, as expressed in the sustainable development goals of the United Nations’ 2023 Agenda. Our study contributes to solving a research gap by seeking to answer several questions: How can post-production residues be used to improve a company’s bioeconomy? Can they bring profit to a company while saving natural wood? Is upcycling using the smart design of post-production a helpful solution for material and cost savings in the bioeconomy? The outcome of our study is twofold. From a creative input perspective, we show the creative possibilities of upcycling production residues. For business models, we refine the conceptualisation of a sustainable SME circular bioeconomy through the profit gained from such a product solution. Based on our research, we present conclusions and suggestions for small and medium-sized enterprises, scientists, designers, and technologists to help the furniture industry transition from a linear economy to a sustainable circular economy. This promotes company profitability and growth and helps to save natural wood.
