Opis:
Surface charging and particles aggregation ascharite are investigated through Zeta potential measurement, XPS analysis, SEM analysis and dissolution experiments. The results show that more Mg2+ are removed from ascharite surface after dissolution, which confirms that incongruent dissolution of ions in the case of certain ionic substances like rmagnesium ions, hydroxyl groups and borate ions can lead to a net charge on surface. Isomorphous substitution of Fe3+ for Mg2+ is also regarded as one factor that causes surface charging behavior, which is in consistent with the experimental data. The dissolution process is analyzed to show more details about the dissolution reactions. The disparity in the bonding energy of B–O and Mg–OH surface groups and the difference in free energy of hydration of surface groups are considered to be the basic reason that lead to incongruent dissolution. Eventually, the effect of surface potential on particles aggregation is analyzed by DLVO theory, indicating that dissolution of ascharite has a detrimental effect on particles dispersion.

Opis:
Small high density lipoproteins (SHDL) contribute to the protection from atherosclerosis, but detailed information about their properties is not available yet. We isolated four of the smallest HDL subclasses that contain apoA-I alone, the small lipoprotein A-I (SLpAI), by their separation on gradient polyacrylamide gel followed by electroelution. Their physico-chemical properties were calculated from their displacement in non-denaturing gradient polyacrylamide gel under the effect of electrical potential. The properties are: Stokes' radii 2.96-3.56 nm; molecular masses 42-70 kDa; net negative charge 7.2-13.5; surface charge densities 3139-4069 -esu∙˙cm^(-2); surface potentials 10.6-15.7 -mV; coefficients of friction 5.74-6.90 × 10-8 g∙˙s^(-1); and diffusion coefficients 5.76-6.94 7× 10-7 cm^2∙˙s^(-1). We found that these particles were of low stability as they underwent molecular transformation into larger particles on storage. The estimated dimensions of these particles do not support ellipsoidal shape, therefore, the most probable shape is spherical; consequently, their hydrated characteristics were estimated. We conclude that these particles have high values of negative surface charge and diffusion coefficients, and are of low stability. Their small Stokes' radii were similar to each other and they are spherical and highly hydrated.

Opis:
The cell-material interaction is significantly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the material surface, including its electrical charge. In this study, the effect of the surface polarity of ferroelectric LiNbO3 single crystals on the adhesion, growth and osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was investigated. The cells were cultured on the normal-to-plane poled and in-plane poled plates resulting in positive, negative and zero surface charge. The number of initially adhering cells on day 1 after seeding, their spreading, shape, and their metabolic activity, production of type I collagen, activity of alkaline phosphatase and mineralization in the following days of cultivation (days 6 and 20) were comparable on all three tested surfaces. However, significant differences were found in the expression of mRNA for type I collagen, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin, i.e. an early, medium-term and late arkers of osteogenic cell differentiation, respectively. On day 20, the expression of type I collagen was significantly lower in cells on negatively-charged than on non-charged surfaces. Moreover, the expression of alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin was higher in cells on positively-charged than on negatively-charged surfaces. These differences were generally more pronounced in standard cell culture medium than in osteogenic medium, which could, at least partly, mask the influence of the material surface properties on the cell behaviour. Thus, positively-charged LiNbO3 surfaces seemed to be more suitable for the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells than the negatively-charged surfaces.
