Opis:
In this paper we try to answer the question in what sense social sciences are subjective and in what sense they are objective. We examine only some aspects of this problem. First, we address the question of intersubjectivity, mainly with the ideas of philosopher K. R. Popper. We proceed by proposing the following working definition of objectivity: we understand objective facts as true propositions, the truth of which are independent from a particular observer. We ask whether facts of social sciences are objective in this sense. Then we examine some possible objections to proposed claims and also some aspects of subjectivity of social sciences. We are concerned with the following issues: distribution, imperfection and inconsistency of concrete human knowledge, importance of human purposes, beliefs and opinions and of relations between people or relations of people to things in social sciences. Regarding these problems we are dealing mainly with the work of F. A. Hayek. We also try to show that claims we made about objectivity and subjectivity of social sciences are not contrary to each other.

Opis:
For the philosophers, aesthetics and musicologists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the topic of subjectivity in art music was a controversial issue. According to them the musical art work had to be objective. However since the subjectivity of the performer has an important influence on aspects such as sound, rhythm, tempo and emotional input, her presence was considered an obstacle for achieving objective musical works. Most of the theoretic approaches to art music supported such an idea and showed a negative perspective on performance and, even though few scholars argued about the value of performance, the main trend pointed at the performer’s subjectivity as an endangerment of music as an objective art. This article conceives art music as a sonic and temporal phenomenon and, from this perspective considers that the performer’s subjectivity is an important and active element that plays a key role in the creation of musical art works. From an existential semiotic perspective this article analyses distinct aspects of the performer’s subjectivity and develops an adaptation of this theory created by Eero Tarasti to the study of subjectivity in performance and its relation with temporality. The existential semiotic theory claims that signs are created by subjects in their act of existing. In this manner subjectivity is located as a central element deeply involved in semiosis processes that creates a rich universe of signs and meaning. This article attempts to show that the sonic dimension of art music can be enriched by the presence of the performer’s subjectivity rather than being an endangerment for it.

Some problems are too subjective, too intimate, too proximal, to admit in principle of any scientific solution: Why is anything you? Is there free will? Is death the end? Other problems are too objective, too macroscopic: Why is there a universe? Why is there anything? What is it to be? Why does mathematics exist? Why does anything happen? Scientific explanation is therefore essentially subject to at least two types of limit, subjective and objective, even though other problems prima facie straddle the subjective/objective divide: What is consciousness? Why is there such a time as the present? Why is there any distinction between right and wrong? Classical (Newtonian-Einsteinian) science largely brackets these problems, but the interpretations of quantum physics variously force them upon us. They only admit of solutions if God exists, there is free-will, and, if some existence is your existence, then you are an immortal soul.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the differences in the perception of subjectivity and objectivity in the two perspectives of Catholic ethics dominant after the Second Vatican Council. Both ethical currents, i.e. autonomous ethics (Autonome Moral) and the ethics of faith (Glaubensethik) developed during the intensive theological study period around the time of the Council. The representatives of both currents interpreted some of the Council’s concepts quite differently, which also led to different results. The concept of subjectivity is closely associated with the understanding of the role and importance of conscience, while the concept of objectivity with the theory of normativity. Many eminent theologians and philosophers took part in the discussion around these fundamental issues for moral theology, among others: A. Auer, J. Ratzinger, Hans Urs von Balthasar, B. Stoecke, J. Fuchs, B. Häring, D. Mieth and others. There was also the voice of the pope at the time, St. John Paul II, who in the enc. "Veritatis splendor" outlined a framework for the further development of moral theology, critically referring to some contemporary ethical projects.

In this article, I analyze the issue of subjectivity in the form in which it appears in Charles Taylor’s and Richard Rorty’s writings. Positions of these philosophers aregenerally regarded as contradictory. I will, however, argued that the position on subjectivity represented by Rorty finds its complementation in Taylor’s concept. To do this, I will show firstly that both Rorty and Taylor use the category of contingency, presenting some common thesis about subjectivity. This way I will show that the location of the category of subjectivity and the scope of its use in each of them concept is closely related to the understanding of objectivity accepted by each of them. This will allow then to reconstruct the concept of subjectivity presented by Taylor and Rorty. Next, in the conclusion, I will present such a summary of those two standpoints, which will include justification of the thesis of their complementarity.

Historia idei pokazuje, że obiektywność to całkiem nowe pojęcie. Jej epistemologiczne znaczenie wynika z nowożytnej idei poznania jako procesu produktywnego, twórczego i konstrukcyjnego. Właściwości te nabierają szczególnego znaczenia w naukach społecznych. Nauki te wnoszą do nowoczesnej problematyzacji wiedzy w kategoriach obiektywności nowe aspekty – praktyczny i intersubiektywny. Główna teza artykułu brzmi następująco: w przeciwieństwie do nauk przyrodniczych warunki obiektywności poznania w naukach społecznych mają specyfi czny sens o b i e k t y w i z a c j i s p o ł e c z n y c h p r a k t y k, a nie technologicznej obiektywizacji wiedzy. Ontologiczne podstawy obiektywności nauk społecznych mają charakter praktyczny a nie technologiczny.
History of ideas shows, that objectivity is quite new. Its epistemological signifi cance emerges from modern idea of cognition as a productive, creative and constructional process. These features has acquired special signifi cance in social sciences. Social sciences contribute to this modern problematization of knowledge in terms of objectivity practical and intersubjective aspects. The main thesis of the paper is as follows: In contrast to natural sciences the conditions of objectivity of cognition in social sciences has specifi c sense of o b j e c t i v i z a t i o n o f s o c i a l p r a c t i c e s and by no means technological objectivization of knowledge. An ontological foundation of objectivity of social sciences has practical, not technological sense.

Gaston Milhaud rejects the principle of contradiction if it is conceived as an absolute and universal rule. He claims that it only holds in some narrowly defined circumstances. According to him, the greater is mental contribution to an act of cognition the more appropriate is the application of the principle of contradiction. My analysis of his views shows that he wanted to emphasize the differences between the objective reality and its mental or linguistic representations rather than undermine the logical principle of contradiction. Parallels can be noted between Milhaud’s views on contradiction and Leon Chwistek’s theory of the multiplicity of realities, as well as Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz’s concept of the cognitive role of language.

Opis:
The potential of Feminist Jurisprudence is mainly built on its criticism of Traditional Jurisprudence. Through the deconstruction of the latter’s main categories such as objectivity, justice, equality, and rationality, Feminist Jurisprudence aims to demonstrate that Traditional Jurisprudence tends to mask inequality, exclusion and lack of recognition rather than being able to bring about change or provide the values under research. What is more, FJ indicates a wide range of topics that are not explored by Traditional Jurisprudence and thus have nochance to be dealt with using traditional tools. As a result, Feminist Jurisprudence provides a separate language, a different epistemology and methodological tools that can broadenaccess to justice including all subjects by giving them recognition. What follows from these two approaches to jurisprudence and two distinct sets of epistemological assumptions isa different understanding of the subject and a different vision of social relations. As Feminist Jurisprudence convincingly shows, traditional law, with its inclination for objectivity defends legal norms as part of the legal and social order rather than an individual autonomy and integrity of subjects. In this paper I would like to suggest a middle-way solution going beyond the dualistic categories of objectivity and subjectivity. The proposal calls for a deep structural change of the legal discourse as the only one that really matters from the feminist point of view.

The article proposes the hypothesis that on the basis of analytical and interpretative practices, when describing, analysing and interpretating moving images, a dichotomous, binary division into objective and subjective images is a highly questionable move: it does not lend itself to an absolutely unequivocal resolution. In film, as in the field of moving images as a whole, there is no objective narration, just as there is no subjective narration. What emerges is an ostensibly dependent narration (or ostensibly independent), blending and merging both of these aspirations in diverse ways.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to explain how the subjectivity of perceptions of the social world is generated, and clarifies some issues related to the reconciliation of its multiple reflections. The author describes the rules and mechanisms inherent in the process through which subjectivity is transformed into social objectivity. This is effected by exploring the paradigm of the multitude and its two traditions - differentiating and consolidating ones. The paper concludes with a description of the basic findings resulting from the analysis of this paradigm as well as a discussion of its advantages, limitations and its relation to the positivist paradigm.
