Opis:
The paper presents the results of the research on tree diameter structure in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands growing on mine dumps and pits reclaimed for forestry. The diameter structure of stands was characterised using statistical concentration and dispersion measures and compared with five theoretical distributions: beta, gamma, logarithmic−normal, normal and Weibull's. The studies were conducted in eight pine stands in age classes I (below 20) and II (21−40) age classes growing on the rehabilitated areas of the Bełchatów, Piaseczno, Szczakowa and Smolnica mines.

Opis:
The objectives of the study were (1) to determine the models of diameter at breast height (dbh) distributions in single−storied mixed stands with fir Abies alba Mill. and beech Fagus sylvatica L. as well as (2) to assess the usefulness of Weibull distribution to approximation of empirical dbh distributions for distinguished models. In the Carpathians (southern Poland) and in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (central Poland) 36 sample plots ranging in size from 0.1 to 0.4 ha were established. To identify the dbh distribution models in single−storied stands with similar empirical dbh distributions, the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) with the Jaccard's measure and the Ward's minimum variance agglomeration method was used. To approximate dbh distributions, the Weibull distribution was employed. Single−storied mixed stands with fir and beech, with the mean age between 50 and 70 years at the dbh, were characterised by a large diversity of dbh distributions. Three groups of stands (I, II, III) differing, among others, in average dbh were determined (fig. 1). In these groups the average dbh ranged from 23.5 to 32.6 cm, from 18.9 to 25.1 cm, and from 13.7 cm to 19.6 cm, respectively. Within these groups, seven models of unimodal distributions were selected (figs. 2−4; tab.). The models are characterised by varying degrees of asymmetry with the highest number of trees from less than 30/ha to more than 300/ha which occurred mainly in the dbh classes between 9 and 33 cm (models AS1, SM1, AS2, AS3, AS4, AS5, SM2). The results of χ² test indicate the high flexibility and suitability of Weibull distribution for modelling of such types of dbh structures.

The objectives of the study were (1) to determine the models of diameter at breast height (dbh) distributions in two− and multi−storied mixed stands with fir Abies alba Mill. and beech Fagus sylvatica L. as well as (2) to assess the usefulness of single Weibull distribution and two−component mixture of Weibull distribution to approximation of empirical dbh distributions for distinguished models of dbh structures. In the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, 21 sample plots ranging in size from 0.2 to 0.4 ha were established. To identify the models of dbh distributions, in two− and multi−storied stands with similar empirical dbh distributions, the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) with the Jaccard's measure and the Ward's minimum variance agglomeration method were used. To approximate dbh distributions, the single Weibull distribution and the two−component mixture of Weibull distribution were employed. In two− and multi−storied mixed stands with fir and beech, with the mean age between 50 and 70 at the dbh, four models of dbh distributions were determined (fig. 1). Two of them were decreasing, strongly asymmetric (OS and OJ models; fig. 2) and the other two were increasing in the initial phase and decreasing in the final, having two maximums (DM1 and DM2 models; fig. 3). In the stands with the complex structure mixed distribution should be used to approximate empirical data. The analysis revealed high suitability and versatility of Weibull distribution both as single form and two−component mixture.

Opis:
The study aimed at analyzing the oak population structure was performed on the 29−hectare plot representing stands dominated by spruce in the strict reserve of the Białowieża National Park. It revealed that oaks represent two distinct cohorts: the old, emerged in the late 1800s, and the new that is being established in the area subject to mass decline of spruce. We suggest that the first regeneration wave was the result of ceasing the frequent ground fire regime that prevented the regeneration of trees except for pine. The current wave has been prompted by a set of changes in the habitat quality, following the breakdown of dense spruce−dominated stands. These changes, such as access to sunlight, accelerated decomposition of spruce litter, local exposure of mineral soil, and protective structures of lying spruce logs, provide regeneration advantage to oak and other intolerant species.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to recognise the structure (sex, height, diameter) and vitality of European yew (Taxus baccata L.) population in the ‘Cisy nad Liswartą' reserve (50°46'27,12"N 18°47'11,86"E). The field investigations were performed in years 2005−2009. We measured diameter at breast height, diameter at root collar and height of all yews in the reserve. Sex of the individuals was determined as well as their health condition was classified into one of five classes. Total number of life and dead yew specimens (with height over 0,5 m) accounted to 466. Majority of the population grew in dense stands (stand density index 0.5−0.7). Sex was described for 55% of the population. Number of female individuals was 142 (30%) and male 116 (25%). Lack of or small crown transparency was found for 30% of life yew trees. The share of high transparency crowns equalled 11%. Damage caused by the game (especially deer) was older than 10 years and found for 42% life trees. Seedlings occurred under the canopy of 47 mature trees (10% of population). 15 relevés were established in the investigated stands. Natural regeneration of yew was found on 11 of them. 5 characterised with small number of yew seedlings. The greatest number of seedlings equalled 200 individuals. It was found that the number of yews higher than 0.5 m decreased in comparison to the previous surveys. Female and male yew trees occurred in the reserve, so the generative breeding is possible. Health condition of the analysed yew population is moderate. Problems with survival of the seedlings was observed. The special treatments should be recommended – cutting of some competitors to give more light for natural regeneration and fencing the greater number of yew seedlings.

Opis:
The paper presents the stand structure in the "Zdroje" common yew nature reserve in Szczecin. In 2006 the stand was built by 1848 trees that belonged to 14 species. Scots pine was the most numerous species (1067 trees). There were also 533 common yews. The other species were represented by 1−76 specimens. The diameter structure of six the most important species as well as the height structure of a common yew were analysed. Changes in the height structure of a common yew over 28 years were presented as well. No natural regeneration of common yew was observed.
