Opis:
Structural bioinformatics approaches applied to the alpha- and beta-glycosidases from the GH4 enzyme family reveal that, despite low sequence identity, these enzymes possess quite similar global structural characteristics reflecting a common reaction mechanism. Locally, there are a few distinctive structural characteristics of GH4 alpha- and beta-glycosidases, namely, surface cavities with different geometric characteristics and two regions with highly dissimilar structural organizations and distinct physicochemical properties in the alpha- and beta-glucosidases from Thermotoga maritima. We suggest that these structurally dissimilar regions may be involved in specific protein-protein interactions and this hypothesis is sustained by the predicted distinct functional partners of the investigated proteins. Also, we predict that alpha- and beta-glycosidases from the GH4 enzyme family interact with difenoconazole, a fungicide, but there are different features of these interactions especially concerning the identified structurally distinct regions of the investigated proteins.

Opis:
Hydrogels that possess the ability of gelling in response to changes in the local environment, such as pH or temperature, have been examined extensively recently. In this paper the properties of thermosensitive chitosan hydrogels prepared with the use of chitosan glutaminate and -glycerophosphate are presented. The sol/gel transition point was determined based on the rheological properties. The structure of gels was observed under the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and was investigated by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential themogravimetric (DTG) analy¬sis and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The crystallinity of gel structure was determined by X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD).

Opis:
Thin films of bismuth oxide have been prepared utilizing vacuum evaporation. XRD anyalysis reveal that all the films were tetragonal polycrystalline structure with a preferred orientation along (002) plane. SEM images indicate that the grain size fall in the category of nanosize. AFM results assure that the nanonstructure behavior of thin films. Optical studies show that these films have a direct transition with optical energy gap equal to 2.5 eV.

In order to remove the harmful metal ions in lead-zinc mineral processing wastewater, two natural clay minerals (bentonite and kaolin) were used as adsorbents and Zn(II) ions were the emphasis in this work. The adsorption behaviors including kinetics and isotherms were investigated by batch experiments. In addition, the adsorption mechanisms were studied by means of zeta potential testing, optical microscope and XRD analysis. The results show that the adsorption process can be best described as the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption equilibrium data of bentonite and kaolinite can be respectively fitted best by Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic studies display that the adsorption of Zn(II) onto clays is non-spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum capacity of Zn(II) adsorbed on bentonite and kaolinite respectively reaches to 79.2 mg·g-1 and 6.35 mg·g-1 at 25 °C. The structural differences of bentonite and kaolinite result in the differences in adsorption behavior and mechanism. The interaction mechanisms of Zn(II) with bentonite and kaolinite involve electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, surface complex and precipitation. Bentonite as adsorbent has the potential to remove Zn2+ better than kaolinite.

Opis:
ZnO thin films have been prepared by chemical spray pyrolysis technique CSP). XRD pattern reveals that the preferred orientation was varied with concentration, topography analysis was done by AFM micrograph which confirm the existence of nonstructural films. The optical properties was done by recorded the transmittane and absorbance which were affected by an increase in concentration. The values of optical energy gap obtained from Tauc relation were 3.17, 3.18 and 3.19 eV for 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 M respectively. Urbach energy confirms the decrease in band tail as the concentration increase.

Opis:
Fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) thin films were deposited onto glass substrate at different substrate temperatures by a simple and inexpensive method of air pressure chemical vapor deposition. The substrate temperature was kept constant at about 500°C as the optimum temperature, and air was used as both a carrier gas and the oxidizing agent. A very simple method of characterization were carried on to investigate the electrical and structural properties of the prepared thin films. The electrical parameters variations showed that these parameters vary with substrate temperature ranging from an insulator thin film to a highly conductive layer. X-ray diffraction also revealed the structure to be polycrystalline at higher temperatures compared to amorphous structure for lower temperatures.

Opis:
The structural properties of photorespiratory serine:glyoxylate aminotransferases (SGAT, EC 2.6.1.45) from maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaves were examined. By means of molecular sieving on Zorbax SE-250 column and filtration through centrifugal filters it was shown that dimers of wheat enzyme (molecular mass of about 90 kDa) dissociate into component monomers (molecular mass of about 45 kDa) upon decrease in pH value (from 9.1 or 7.0 to 6.5). At pH 9.1 a 50-fold decrease of ionic strength elicited a similar effect. Under the same conditions homodimers of the maize enzyme (molecular mass similar to that of the wheat enzyme) remained stable. Immunoblot analysis with polyclonal antiserum against wheat seedling SGAT on leaf homogenates or highly purified preparations of both enzymes showed that the immunogenic portions of the wheat enzyme are divergent from those of the maize enzyme. The sequence of 136 amino acids of the maize enzyme and 78 amino acids of the wheat enzyme was established by tandem mass spectrometry with time of flight analyzer. The two enzymes likely share similarity in tertiary and quaternary structures as well as high level of hydrophobicity on their molecular surfaces. They likely differ in the mechanism of transport from the site of biosynthesis to peroxisomes as well as in some aspects of secondary structure.

In 1940, in attempts to solve the Four Color Problem, Henry Lebesgue gave an approximate description of the neighborhoods of 5-vertices in the class P5 of 3-polytopes with minimum degree 5. This description depends on 32 main parameters. (6, 6, 7, 7, 7), (6, 6, 6, 7, 9), (6, 6, 6, 6, 11), (5, 6, 7, 7, 8), (5, 6, 6, 7, 12), (5, 6, 6, 8, 10), (5, 6, 6, 6, 17), (5, 5, 7, 7, 13), (5, 5, 7, 8, 10), (5, 5, 6, 7, 27), (5, 5, 6, 6, ∞), (5, 5, 6, 8, 15), (5, 5, 6, 9, 11), (5, 5, 5, 7, 41), (5, 5, 5, 8, 23), (5, 5, 5, 9, 17), (5, 5, 5, 10, 14), (5, 5, 5, 11, 13) Not many precise upper bounds on these parameters have been obtained as yet, even for restricted subclasses in P5. In 2018, Borodin, Ivanova, Kazak proved that every forbidding vertices of degree from 7 to 11 results in a tight description (5, 5, 6, 6, ∞), (5, 6, 6, 6, 15), (6, 6, 6, 6, 6). Recently, Borodin, Ivanova, and Kazak proved every 3-polytope in P5 with no vertices of degrees 6, 7, and 8 has a 5-vertex whose neighborhood is majorized by one of the sequences (5, 5, 5, 5, ∞) and (5, 5, 10, 5, 12), which is tight and improves a corresponding description (5, 5, 5, 5, ∞), (5, 5, 9, 5, 17), (5, 5, 10, 5, 14), (5, 5, 11, 5, 13) that follows from the Lebesgue Theorem. The purpose of this paper is to prove that every 3-polytope with minimum degree 5 and no vertices of degree 6 or 7 has a 5-vertex whose neighborhood is majorized by one of the ordered sequences (5, 5, 5, 5, ∞), (5, 5, 8, 5, 14), or (5, 5, 10, 5, 12).

In this study, we have investigated the structural, electronic, and elastic properties of the M₂CdC (M = Ta, Zr, and Hf) MAX phases, using the first-principle methods based on the density functional theory. The calculated formation energies revealed that these compounds are thermodynamically stable in the hexagonal MAX phase. The stability is confirmed by the elastic constants and the conditions of mechanical stability criterion. Also, we have determined the bulk and shear modules of the Young modulus and the Poisson coefficient. The band structures indicate that the three materials are electrically conductive. The chemical bond in M₂CdC is covalent-ionic in nature with the presence of metallic character. For the density of states the hybridization peak between M d and C p occurs in the lower energy range. We have found that there is no gap for these materials due to the existence of a maximum peak of DOS around Fermi level.

Mixed Fe2O3 - NiO thin films have been prepared by chemical Spray pyrolysis technique onto glass substrate preheated to 450 °C. The thickness of thin films was found to be (400 ±20) nm. XRD measurements reveal that all the film exhibit polycrystalline hexagonal wrutzite with a preferred orientation along (104) plane for pure and 10 % and 20 % Ni, while for the rest the structure was amorphous. AFM analysis indicate a nanostructure for all the films. The optical energy gap was found to be increased from optical transitions seems to be direct and the optical energy gap seems to be increased from 2.5 to 2.69 eV as the percentage of NiO increase.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of modification by heat-moisture treatment (HMT) combined with microwave pre- and post-treatment (MW) on the physicochemical, structural and digestive properties of potato starch. The light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the structural properties of starch. FT-IR and XRD spectra implied that MW and HMT destroyed the double helices and crystalline structure of potato starch. The relative crystallinity of modified starch granules (15.17–18.17%) was lower than that of native starch (19.39%). In the case of physicochemical properties, the modified starches had higher pasting temperature (68.8–93.0oC) and setback viscosity (807–3168 cP), but lower peak viscosity (1315–3662 cP) and breakdown viscosity (17.3–78.3 cP) than that of native potato starch, which were 68.5oC, 496 cP, 6598 cP and 2526 cP, respectively. The HMT and MW modifications significantly increased the content of slowly digestible starch and resistant starch. The resistant starch content of starch obtained by HMT combined with MW post-treatment was significantly higher than that of starch obtained by HMT combined with MW pre-treatment and single HMT. These results may promote good understanding of the effects of HMT combined with MW pre- and post-treatment on physicochemical properties and digestibility of potato starch, and wide utilization of microwave and heat-moisture techniques in starch modification.

Opis:
Creating innovative methods of treatment and regeneration of damaged tissues or organs is a key challenge of the twenty-first century. The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of producing and characterising the properties of self-organising chitosan hydrogels prepared with the use of chitosan lactate/chloride and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate as a cross-linking agent. The structure and supramolecular architecture of the biomaterials were evaluated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and polarised optical microscopy. Biological studies assessed cytotoxicity by contact with a human colon adenocarcinoma cell line. The colourimetric resazurin assay showed that the obtained chitosan hydrogels are non-cytotoxic materials. Thus, self-organising biomaterials hold great promise for application in tissue engineering.

A new distribution called Generalized Odd Fréchet (GOF) distribution is presented and its properties explored. Some structural properties of the proposed distribution, including the shapes of the hazard rate function, moments, conditional moments, moment generating function, skewness, and kurtosis are presented. Mean deviations, Lorenz and Bonferroni curves, Rényi entropy, and the distribution of order statistics are given. The maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to estimate the model parameters, and finally applications of the model to a real data set are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed distribution.

The height of a face in a 3-polytope is the maximum degree of its incident vertices, and the height of a 3-polytope, h, is the minimum height of its faces. A face is pyramidal if it is either a 4-face incident with three 3-vertices, or a 3-face incident with two vertices of degree at most 4. If pyramidal faces are allowed, then h can be arbitrarily large, so we assume the absence of pyramidal faces in what follows. In 1940, Lebesgue proved that every quadrangulated 3-polytope has h ≤ 11. In 1995, this bound was lowered by Avgustinovich and Borodin to 10. Recently, Borodin and Ivanova improved it to the sharp bound 8. For plane triangulation without 4-vertices, Borodin (1992), confirming the Kotzig conjecture of 1979, proved that h ≤ 20, which bound is sharp. Later, Borodin (1998) proved that h ≤ 20 for all triangulated 3-polytopes. In 1996, Horňák and Jendrol’ proved for arbitrarily polytopes that h ≤ 23. Recently, Borodin and Ivanova obtained the sharp bounds 10 for trianglefree polytopes and 20 for arbitrary polytopes. In this paper we prove that any polytope has a face of degree at most 10 with height at most 20, where 10 and 20 are sharp.

Opis:
W celu oszacowania prawdopodobieństwa przerwania ciągłości ściany tętniaka aorty brzusznej (AAA) konieczne jest zbadanie warunków obciążeniowych odpowiedzialnych za to zdarzenie, a także identyfikacja zmian zachodzących w strukturze ściany tego naczynia w procesie rozwoju schorzenia. Stąd, głównym celem prezentowanej pracy jest określenie mechanicznych oraz strukturalnych właściwości ścian tętniaków aorty brzusznej oraz preparatów zdrowych aort. W tym celu zastosowano test jednoosiowego rozciągania próbek wyciętych z pobranych preparatów w dwóch prostopadłych do siebie kierunkach: wzdłużnym oraz obwodowym, a także przeprowadzono histologiczne badania mikrostruktury ściany naczyń. Na podstawie przeprowadzonego testu wytrzymałościowego wykreślono krzywą naprężenie-odkształcenie dla każdego przebadanego przypadku i wyznaczono charakterystyczne wielkości opisujące wytrzymałość oraz sztywność przebadanych próbek. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na istotny wzrost sztywności w przypadku preparatów ścian tętniaków, co szczególnie zaznaczyło się w kierunku obwodowym.
To estimate when an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) may rupture, it is necessary to understand the forces responsible for this event and structural alterations lead to changes in the mechanical properties of the tissue. Hence, the main goal of presented study is determination and assessment of mechanical and structural properties of the walls of normal abdominal aortas and abdominal aortic aneurysms. With this end in view uniaxial tensile tests of the specimens cut out from the walls of abdominal aortic aneurysms and normal abdominal aortas in two directions - longitudinal and circumferential - have been carried out and histological study has been performed. On the basis of these tests the stress-strain relationships have been determined for each investigated specimen and the maximum tangential modulus as well as the ultimate tensile strength has been assigned. The results indicate the increase of tissue stiffness in the case of abdominal aortic aneurysms, especially in the circumferential direction.
