The article is an interpretation of the novel Ciemno, prawie noc (It’s dark, almost night) by Joanna Bator. It focuses on the specific vision of Wałbrzych, a real city located in the South of Poland. The vision consists of many traditional and present-day patterns entitled to create spatial images. In her novel, Bator examines methods of presenting urban spaces in literature which leads her to constructing a representation of a non-town. Destruction of the emotional sphere of the human personality (the case of the narrator – main character) damages the possibility of habituating the sphere of existence (home, quarter, town, province).

This study examines the perception of space and the mental landscapes in Joseph Roth’s travel reportages from southern France. Particular focus will be placed on the articles that Joseph Roth wrote for the “Frankfurter Zeitung” and collected in a book published posthumously, in 1956 with the title Im mittäglichen Frankreich and afterwards under the title Die weißen Städte. In this text the relationship between the real topography, the literary representation and the subjective point of view of the author, might give us a new definition of the concept of “space” and “belonging” beyond language. The aim is to analyze the representation that Joseph Roth gives us, through his articles, that builds up new spaces and is in relation with the actual place and with the topography of the individual and collective memory.

The article considers the consequences of spatial turn. This turn didnot limit itself merely to the creation of a new methodology and researchtools. Instead it covered a much wider scope, as it allowed conclusions to bedrawn not only on cultural discourse but also transformation within otherareas of research as politics, patterns of common memory andideology,as well as a change in the processes of establishing the rulesof sociallife. The awareness of the extent to which space determines the conditionsof existence was directly linked to the perception of human activity asinherently “located”. The growing interest into the spatial dimension ofindividual and collective experience provides an insight into the issue froma broader perspective. At the same time the topographical turn contributedto the reformulation of other basic terms such as language, subject, culture,literary and artistic practice, and finally, the research and the researcher’sposition in its own right.

The maritime and overseas journeys of the idea of anthropologyThis article discusses the very concept of anthropology, which was born at the end of 19th century, termed the “history of ideas”, and still exists in contemporary literary theory, especially as part of what is referred to as “spatial turn”. As with the similar concept proposed earlier by Ernst Curtius, it is focused on topics treated as the autonomous component of an anonymous, unpersonal, and in fact unhistorical discourse. On the contrary, the article tends to prove that travelling theories were always strongly connected with travelling theorists. In contrast, the author attempts to consider the interrelations between the two conceptions of anthropology: the philosophical and the linguistic, taking into account the material left in texts connected with the journey from Göteborg to New York by Roman Jakobson and Ernst Cassirer. The reconstruction of their possible discussions on board proves that the boundary between their projects, usually drawn in the history of culture, is weaker than could be supposed. Morskie i zamorskie podróże idei antropologiiArtykuł podejmuje dyskusję z koncepcją antropologii kulturowej wyłonioną po tzw. zwrocie spacjalnym i skupioną na wędrówkach pojęć. Ze względu na depersonalizację rozważanego materiału wciąż mieści się ona w modelu XIX-wiecznej jeszcze proweniencji, bliska historii idei i topice. Dyskusja została przeprowadzona na materiale nielicznych świadectw wiążących się z podróżą morską z Europy do USA, a w istocie ucieczką przed kolejną falą nazizmu, podczas której doszło do przypadkowego spotkania Romana Jakobsona i Ernsta Cassirera. Rekonstrukcja ich możliwych dialogów podczas piętnastu dni rejsu, wsparta na metodologicznej propozycji historii domyślnej wyprowadzonej z praktyki filologicznej Tadeusza Zielińskiego, pozwala odkryć silne związki między ich projektami, a tym samym między koncepcjami antropologii filozoficznej i antropologii lingwistycznej. Wyłaniające się ze świadectw tekstowych konwergencje podważają rozgraniczanie obu tych modernistycznych projektów, zwykle dokonywane w historii dyscypliny. Pozwalają także na reinterpretację rozpowszechnionych ujęć postawy profesjonalizmu uznawanej za typową dla uczonego nowoczesnego i utożsamianej z politycznym i społecznym niezaangażowaniem.

Artykuł zawiera rozważania poświęcone prozie najnowszej i jej edukacyjnemu znaczeniu. Interpretacje tekstów Filipa Springera, Julii Fiedorczuk, Anny Janko czy Andrzeja Stasiuka mogą zostać uznane za przykłady działań analitycznych, pozwalających pokazywać powiązania między najnowszą literaturą a globalnymi oraz lokalnymi problemami trapiącymi ludzkie społeczności i zbiorowości. Spuścizna zwrotu przestrzennego we współczesnej humanistyce to zarazem wiele przemian, do których doszło nie tylko w ramach kulturowych dyskursów. Ważnym przekształceniom podległo postrzeganie innych obszarów badawczych, takich jak polityka, wzorce pamięci oraz ideologii, a także przemiany reguł wspólnotowego życia. Wzrost zainteresowania przestrzennym wymiarem doświadczeń jednostkowych i zbiorowych doprowadził do przeformułowania podstawowych zagadnień, takich jak język, podmiot, kultura, praktyka literacka i artystyczna, a także przedmiot badań oraz pozycja badacza w sferze nowych kompetencji.  
The article contains a consideration about contemporary prose and its educational values. Interpretations of books written by Filip Springer, Julia Fiedorczuk, Anna Janko, Andrzej Stasiuk may be treated as examples of connections between nowadays literature and global and local problems that torment our societies. The consequences of spatial turn in humanistic researches bring many changes, not only on cultural discourses. There are also important transformations of other areas of research, as politics, patterns of common memory and ideology, as well as the processes of establishing the rules of social life. The growing interest into the spatial dimension of individual and collective experience provides to the reformulation of other basic terms such as language, subject, culture, literary and artistic practice, and finally, the research and the researcher’s position in the sphere of his new rights.

Autorka do dotychczasowych reinterpretacji postkolonialnych w badaniach nad literaturą środkowoeuropejską dołącza grupę tekstów powstałych w lub w odniesieniu do czasów socjalistycznych. Omówione teksty autorstwa Bohumila Hrabala, Mirona Białoszewskiego i Wolfganga Hilbiga przy użyciu stylistyki karnawału kreują różne przestrzenie kontestacji oficjalnego dyskursu o subwersywnym potencjale: knajpę, dworce i bazary oraz świat podziemnego Berlina.
The article reports the state of research on the space in literature, starting with the findings of the structuralists, through semiotics, to anthropology and the spatial turn. It argues that the modern return of the space took place due to the popularity of the post-colonial theory in literary studies. The author adds a group of texts created in or in relation to the socialist’ times to the existing post-colonial interpretations of the Central European culture. The texts by Bohumil Hrabal, Miron Białoszewski and Wolfgang Hilbig, discussed using the carnival stylistics, create different spaces of contestation of the official discourse, which posses a subversive potential: a pub, railway stations and bazaars and the underground world of Berlin.

An increased interest in space in the humanities can be referred to as a spatial, topographic or topological shift. This article is an attempt at organizing these concepts and defining the fundamental differences between them. Based on the findings of European and American researchers (including Edward Soja, Sigrid Weigel, Ernest W.B. Hess-Lüttich, and Joseph Hillis Miller) and a Polish literary scholar (Elizabeth Rybicka), the author tries to distinguish, and define the relationship, between spatial, topographic and topological shifts. This article was inspired by the terminological chaos in the Polish humanities.

The article presents the argumentation for the issue of the rural cultural landscape in visual perception. The Author conducts her reflection in the light of three turns, namely: cultural, iconic and the spatial one. She stressed that the degraded rural environment as well as demolished cultural landscape is the proof of erroneous theoretical and methodological assumption of research. She points the wrong patterns of spatial planning as consequences of the lack of humanistic view in disciplines dealing with space. The critical reflection against the lack of such values as: love of home and localities, tradition, respect for space in historical and geographical aspects is the main axis of the author’s narration. The more humanistic approach is badly needed to implement the requirement of geography with “human face”. According to Author, who has shared the Roger Scruton’s opinion, the protection of the rural cultural landscape requires the strong appreciation the conservative values of culture, rather than “progressive” ones. At the end of the text she argue the tendency – observed among some young researchers – to diminish the role of sight in human experience because of his affiliation to the West. She tried to challenge the “culture of rejection” (of sight) as the important factor of human – sensitive and intellectual – experience helping against the demolition and annihilation of polish villages.
W artykule omówiono wybrane kwestie związane z badaniami wizualnej percepcji krajobrazu kulturowego wsi. Autorka dokonała analizy w świetle trzech zwrotów, a mianowicie: kulturowego, ikonicznego i przestrzennego. Podkreśliła, że zdegradowane środowisko wiejskie oraz zniszczony krajobraz kulturowy są dowodem błędnych założeń teoretycznych i metodologicznych. Wskazała, że niewłaściwe wzorce planowania przestrzennego są konsekwencją braku humanistycznego spojrzenia w badaniach struktur przestrzennych. Główną osią narracji autorki stał się problem niedoboru takich wartości, jak: przywiązanie do miejsca, tradycja, szacunek dla przestrzeni w jej historycznych i geograficznych aspektach. Z refleksji tej wynika bezpośrednio, że humanistyczne podejście jest bardzo potrzebne do wdrożenia geografii z „ludzką twarzą”. Według autorki, która podziela zdanie Rogera Scrutona, ochrona wiejskiego krajobrazu kulturowego wymaga docenienia tradycyjnych wartości kulturowych. W artykule wskazano także na obserwowaną wśród młodych badaczy tendencję do umniejszania roli percepcji wizualnej. Autorka kwestionuje „kulturę detronizacji” wzroku, który jako element doświadczania przestrzeni przez człowieka w istotny sposób pomaga w walce przeciwko degradacji krajobrazu polskiej wsi.

The article starts with the analysis of respective definitions and considerations regarding the term Rathaus in different languages (German, Italian, English and French). Subsequently the origins of town-halls are taken into closer consideration, a topic which – seen from the standpoint of modern city-marketing – plays a decisive role for the “ranking” of towns. As a synonym for the evolution of civic and urban liberties in Italy as well as north of the Alps the chronology of the evolution of town-halls as well as their topographical placement within the urban pattern are of greatest importance. More explicit considerations are given with regard to town-halls in Austrian towns. An excellent basis for this analysis is the data provided by the series of more than 60 volumes of the Österreichischer Städteatlas (edited 1982–2013). In the end an overview to the respective research with hints to some deficits and possibilities for further investigation is given. It should especially be indicated that the “Rathaus”-topic can and should play a much greater role within actual trends of research (“spatial turn”).

In the art of the 20th century, space became the basic material. Today, digital media and VR and AR technologies are used to cross the visual and space barriers, but always at the expense of experiencing reality. The spatial turn in culture results from the post-avant-garde ideas of art that cuts itself off from ancient art. Using the example of the fresco by Andrea del Pozzo from the Sant’Ignazio church in Rome, we will show analogies between baroque illusionist painting and digital visual media. It turns out that contemporary art arrives at the space issues that have been practiced in architecture and art since antiquity. The space created by painting illusion as a total work of art exhibits many features of contemporary art and the phenomena of VR and AR such as intermediality, immersion, interactivity. Spatial turn arguments can be used to enhance the potential of classic painting language in architecture.

Przedmiotem artykułu są zmiany zachodzące w badaniach nad przestrzeniami kulturowymi wywołane kryzysem teoriopoznawczym w obszarze badań nad kulturą i przebiegające równolegle z dyskusjami dotyczącymi nowych teorii miejskich. W artykule postawiono cztery tezy: 1) nauka poznaje i performuje przestrzenie; 2) studia kulturowe rozwijają zwrot przestrzenny, zwrot topograficzny i zwrot geograficzny; 3) zwrot przestrzenny uaktywnia pułapki w badaniach transdziedzinowych; 4) urbanizacja jest planetarną praktyką kulturalizacji przestrzeni. Wychodząc z założenia, że przestrzeń stanowi nie tylko przedmiot poznania, lecz także konstrukt badań naukowych (zwroty: przestrzenny, geograficzny, topograficzny i ekologiczny), poszukuje się odpowiedzi na pytanie, jakie miejsce zajmują czynniki i przestrzenie kulturowe w nowych epistemologiach miejskości.
This paper explores and discusses the experimental, critical and self-reflexive changes in the fields of cultural spaces research such as cultural studies, cultural geography and urban studies. It seeks to contribute to current debates on space in the context of epistemological crisis in cultural studies and contemporary urban theory. The key thesis are: 1) Science explores and performs cultural spaces; 2) Cultural studies develop spatial turn, topographical turn and geographical turn; 3) Spatial turn activates trick questions in trans-field research; 4) Urbanisation is a planetary practice of culturalisation. Based on a review of epistemological search on urban space, this article considers how researches have attempted to situate knowledge by suggesting different concepts of space and of the urban. It is note that these concepts often struggle to provide meaningful estimates of important factors of urbanisation. This implies that whilst the study of cultural space remains difficult, epistemologies and methodologies of cultural urban studies can be infiltrate by set at variannce disciplines.

In the context of the significant literature on Marc Augé’s concept of non-places, including its various applications in different disciplines, and also constantly growing legal geographical analyses, it is striking that, to date, there have been no more focused discussion on non-places and the law. This paper aims to begin filling this noticeable gap. It focuses on an original presentation of Augé’s concept and distinguishes three levels of non-places: their objective, material level (e.g. the buildings of non-places); the intersubjective, social level (the specific, distinctive feel of non-places, such as anonymity and detachment); and the purely individual, subjective level (the way particular people assess a specific non-place). The paper not only argues that Augé is already sensitive to the law in his original account of non-places, but also that the law – while directly irrelevant for the subjective level – is nevertheless very important for the objective and intersubjective levels of non-places, as, ultimately, it is a co-constituting factor of these aspects of the discussed type of sites.
W kontekście obszernej literatury na temat koncepcji nie-miejsc Marca Augé, włącznie z jej wieloma aplikacjami w różnych dziedzinach, a także stale rozwijanych geograficzno-prawnych analiz, zaskakujące jest, że dotąd nie przeprowadzono bardziej skupionej dyskusji nad nie-miejscami i prawem. Celem tego artykułu jest rozpoczęcie wypełniania tej luki. Skupia się on na oryginalnym ujęciu koncepcji Augé i wyróżnia trzy poziomy nie-miejsc: ich obiektywny, materialny poziom (np. budynki nie-miejsc); intersubiektywny, społeczny poziom (specyficzna, wyróżniająca atmosfera nie-miejsc, taka jak panująca w nich anonimowość i poczucie zdystansowania), oraz wyłącznie indywidualny, subiektywny poziom (to, jak poszczególni ludzie oceniają konkretne nie-miejsce). W artykule przekonuje się nie tylko do tego, że Augé jest uwrażliwiony na prawo już w jego pierwotnym ujęciu nie-miejsc. Ponadto prawo – jakkolwiek bezpośrednio nieistotne dla subiektywnego poziomu – jest bardzo ważne dla poziomów obiektywnego i intersubiektywnego nie-miejsc, jako, ostatecznie, czynnik współkonstytuujący te aspekty komentowanego rodzaju miejsc.
