Opis:
The main purpose of this article was to highlight the potential for enhancing positive silvicultural effects and their dependency on the management method in Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. stands. We therefore assessed the impact of natural and artificial regeneration on vitality and health, compaction, surface coverage and seedlings height. Another important goal was to assess the severity of damage in the selected forest sites. A comparative analysis was carried out based on results from field work conducted in the autumn 2010 in the Forest District Nowa Dęba. As part of this field work, also the breeding quality of the analyzed pine renewals was assessed. The obtained results indicate that natural regeneration of Scots pine under the conditions of a fresh coniferous forest as well as a fresh mixed coniferous forest is the most reasonable management practice. In wet mixed coniferous forests however, the naturally regenerating Scots pine seedlings are of lower silvicultural quality and growth parameter values compared to those in artificially regenerated stands. In fresh mixed broadleaved forests, naturally regenerated Scot pine trees showed slightly lower silvicultural quality and vitality than artificially regenerated trees. Our results indicate furthermore that there are indeed conditions under which the restoration of Scots pine in the Nowa Dęba Forest District using natural regeneration is preferable. We also found that the employed method of renewing has a significant impact on pine growth parameters in the moist mixed coniferous forest habitat. Naturally renewing pines are characterized by a lower overall viability, but at the same time natural regeneration provides a larger number of individuals with the best viability (1st vitality class), which can be a valuable selection basis for trees used in breeding.

The paper reports on the results of the provenance experiment with Pinus sylvestris L. of the SP IUFRO 1982 series. The analysis comprised taxation parameters, specifically productivity. Polish populations appeared to be superior ones. Northern and southern provenances were found to represent an inferior quality of the analysed parameters. The dependence of traits on latitude of origin can be described by parabolic equations. Southern populations show poorer adaptation to the Supraśl environmental conditions than the northern ones.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the impact of land relief on site index and growth parameters (height, diameter, slenderness) of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands on inland dunes in the Toruń Basin (N Poland). The study was conducted on 150 plots situated on north− and south−facing dune slopes (54 pairs of twin plots) as well as in intra−dune depressions (42 plots). Height and diameter of ten the thickest pines per 0.1 hectare was measured, and next site index as a potential height of a stand at the age of 100 years was calculated. As the results of the used equation, site index was strongly (R²=0.58) negatively biased to age, so the bias was removed using an elaborated regression model. For stands older than ca. 20 years, the clear higher site index values as well as higher heights and diameters were found for intra−dune depressions than for slopes of the two studied aspects. This was explained by the occurrence of much more fertile and moister soils in depressions. The only age class for which the advantage of site index and growth parameters was not stated for depressions was the youngest class (≤20 years old). This was likely caused by the competitive impact on young pines of Calamagrostis epigejos which prefers intra−dune depressions on inland dunes and forms in forest floor usually dense cover in this position. Impact of contrasting slope aspect was clearly related in the study to age of a stand. For the youngest studied age class both site index values as well as heights and diameters were lower on north− than on south−facing slopes. This was explained by the effect of weeds which form more dense cover on slopes of this aspect than on sunny slopes. For older stands; however higher site index values as well as heights and diameters were revealed for north−facing slopes, due to pines likely took advantage of higher moisture of soils occurring in this place. With reference to slenderness, regardless stand age the parameter was regularly the highest for north− than both for south−facing slopes and depressions. Because of the revealed distinct higher productivity of intra−dune depressions in normally dry and poor in nutrients dune landscape, it could be reasonable to use the depressions to introduce admixtures of broadleaved tree species into pine monocultures on inland dunes.

This paper describes the variability of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) provenances in the IUFRO experiment located in Rogów (central Poland). The silvicultural quality and growth of 17 European provenances at the age of 28 years were examined, including height, diameter at breast height, standing volume, straightness of stem and health status. Populations from Poland (Spała, Miło−młyn, Rychtal), Germany (Betzhorn, Lampertheim), France (Haguenau) and Hungary (Pornóapáti) characterized by the best growth parameters. In contrast, pines from Northern (Russia, Sweden) and Southern (Turkey, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina) Europe were smaller and thinner and, as a result, with lower standing volume. The smallest differences of pine populations were found in tree height. The highest mean tree height (11.68 m) was reported for Rychtal (Poland) provenance, while the lowest (6.77 m) for Çatacik (Turkey). The overall mean tree height in the whole experiment was 9.83 m. Diameter at breast height (dbh) varied more than the tree height. The highest mean dbh (129.91 mm) was reported for Haguenau (France) provenance, while the lowest (72.85 mm) again for Çatacik (Turkey). The overall mean dbh for all provenances equaled 107.12 mm. The highest differences of pine populations were found in the standing volume. The highest standing volume (19.05 m3/ha) was obtained for Pornóapáti (Hungary) provenance, while the lowest (163.72 m3/ha) again for Çatacik (Turkey). In terms of silvicultural quality, the northern provenances were classified as the best ones because of high proportion of trees with straight stems. The largest share of tress with straight stems occurred in the population of Serebryanskoe from Russia (60.8%), while the smallest of Haguenau from France (6.9%). The populations from Southern Europe (Maočnica, Prusačka Rijeka and Çatacik) show poor adaptation to environmental conditions of central Poland.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to characterise the influence of plant spacing on the survival and growth of pines in dry and fresh coniferous forest habitats after almost 40 years since stand establishment. In this study, we compared seven types of spacing, including square, rectangular and triangular configurations, with initial densities ranging from 6944 units/ha to 15 625 units/ha. The research covered two sites where no tending interventions of selective character were performed throughout the growth period. We found that habitat conditions had an influence on tree survival as well as growth in thickness and height in the pine forest stands. In the less fertile habitat, where competition between trees was less intense, about 1,5 to 2 times more trees survived than in the more fertile habitat. Pines growing in the fresh coniferous forest were taller and had substantially larger diameter breast heights (dbh) in comparison to pines of the dry coniferous forest. Additionally, habitat conditions had an influence on the spacing effect correctness of the analysed features. In the poorer habitat this influence was stronger, which showed in a greater differentiation of the analysed parameters as compared to the more fertile habitat. Average dbh values of all trees on the Płock surface increased with decreasing initial density and ranged from 8,24 cm in variant A (15 625 units/ha) to 9,79 cm in variant C (6944 units/ha). On the Łąck surface, trees growing at a lower density (variants C and E) were significantly thicker than trees growing at densities between10 000 units/ha and 15 625 units/ha (spacing variants A, B, F, G). Furthermore, our results showed a significant influence of habitat conditions and plant spacing on the thickness of pines belonging to the 1st biosocial class. Moreover, we found a positive influence of triangular-shaped spacing on the trees' thickness increment in the fresh coniferous forest, which confirms reports from other authors. Hence, we can deduce that triangular spacing enables trees to make better use of their surrounding space which positively impacts on their growth parameters. Based on these results, we can conclude that, in pine forests, there is a significant influence of habitat conditions on tree survival and growth in thickness and height. This study also showed significant differences between the types of plant spacing and their effect on pine shafts in the II age class. However, a relationship between height growth rate and initial density was not observed. In both of the investigated habitats, the highest trees were observed at densities around 11 500 units/ha with triangular spacing enhancing this effect.

Opis:
The paper was aimed at determination of the effect of different tree density in the naturally regenerated monotypic and even aged young Scots pine stands growing in the fresh coniferous or mixed fresh coniferous forest sites on their further development. Research was carried out in Nowa Dęba Forest District (south−eastern Poland). A total of 12 research plots (160×40 m) were established in the selected stands. Plots were divided into 4 equal square pieces (40×40 m), where different methods of tending were applied (variant A – control, variant B – thinned, leaving 16 thousand trees/ha, variant C – thinned, leaving 10 thousand trees/ha, variant D – thinned, leaving 6 thousand trees/ha). The thinning was carried out in April 2007. In subsequent years (2007−2010), selected elements of stand structure like: height, height increment, density and damage resulting from abiotic and biotic factors were determined. Tree density significantly influenced both height increment and qualitative (tree shape) characteristics of naturally regenerated young pine trees. In the course of early thinnings, the number of trees needs to be reduced approximately down to the 10−16 th. stems/ha in the first stage of growth (seedlings), and further down to about 6 th./ha in the coppice stage. Such density enhances the chance of good growth and silvicultural quality of the stand. Noteworthy, even the heavy thinning does not significantly impact the actual proportion of both biotic (e.g. ungulate browsing) and abiotic (e.g. heavy snow) damage in the young naturally regenerated Scots pine forest stands.

Opis:
Different methods of logging slash management (LSM) and methods of soil preparation (MSP) can create different conditions for the growth of forest trees. This occurs through variation in soil aeration, tree nutrition or microbial conditions. These factors are modified by climate, soil fertility, treats from insects or fungal pathogens and renewed species. The aim of this study was to compare effects of three LSM methods: 1) crushing and mixing with the soil by Mery Crusher, 2) chopping and leaving on the soil surface, and 3) removal from the clear−cut, and three MSP: 1) double−mouldboard forest plough LPz−75, 2) active plough U−162, and 3) forest mill FAO−FAR FV 4088 on biometric parameters, density and survival of six−years old Scots pine seedlings. Field research was conducted in Narol Forest District (south−eastern Poland). The soil in the study area was classified as brown podzolic, formed on loose sands with typical mor humus. The experiment was established by planting 10 000 one−year−old pine seedlings per hectare, after clear cut and followed by a two−factor block design consisting of nine variants distinguished on the basis of LSM and MSP randomly assigned to each of the three blocks. Tree height and root collar diameter were measured three times, at the end of 1st, 3rd and 6th growing season. The results showed no statistically significant differences in the size of the analyzed parameters of planted seedlings. Seedlings in the variant with site preparation by crusher and forest mill were slightly higher and thicker. This indicates the better trophic conditions in that variant. LSM did not affect either seedlings density or their survival. A slightly higher survival rate and tree density occurred in variants with crusher regardless of soil preparation method. It follows that, all presented experimental variants give similar results. Therefore, selection of the most appropriate methods of site and soil preparation should primarily respect ecological and economic indicators, and such local factors as microclimate, mainly precipitation, site fertility and threats from pests and fungal diseases.

The paper provides information concerning the growth of pine, spruce, oak, beech and fir stands based on the research conducted by the European Forest Institute in a number of the European countries and in Poland. Noteworthy i.a. is the increase in volume increment of spruce and pine in some stands in Germany up to 250% of the values given in the yield tables. Since the early fifties of the past century beech and sessile oak in Bavaria have exhibited an increase in the height growth and volume increment. Their values markedly exceed those provided in the tables. Fir, similar to spruce, pine and beech shows the reduction in the increment and dieback in the regions under heavy industrial pollution. However in other regions under the impact of air pollution the response of pure and multispecies stands with the share of fir was positive. In Poland, a rapid decline in the dbh increment in three tree species (fir, spruce, pine) in the seventies was greater than in the sixties. In 1981−1989, fir showed a favourable growth in diameter; this positive tendency was noticed in the whole range of fir distribution in Poland, though the increment did not return to the level before its decline. The pine increment regenerated after 1990. The poorest increment was found in spruce in the eighties following its collapse in the seventies (Żywiecki and Śląski Beskid).
