Opis:
The sorption isotherm and sorption kinetics of NH4+by the Fen River reservoir sediment were investigated for a better understanding of the NH4+ sorption characteristics and parameters. The results showed that Q (adsorption content) increased with the increase of Ceq (equilibrium concentration), sorption isotherms could be described by Freundlich equation (R2 from 0.97 to 0.99). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) had a significant correlation with the parameters K and n (R2 was 0.85 and 0.95, respectively). The ENC0 (Ceq as Q was zero) of S1, S2, S3 and S4 was 1.25, 0.57, 1.15 and 1.14 mg L-1, respectively, and they were less than the NH4+ concentrations in reservoir water. The sediments released NH4+ to the Fen River reservoir water and acted as a pollution source, in the form of complex and heterogeneous adsorbents. The NH4+ adsorption kinetic process was composed of ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ reaction patterns and could be fitted using both Elovich equation and Pseudo second-equation. More than one-step may be involved in the NH4+ sorption processes, and interior diffusion was not dominant ion action.

Opis:
The paper presents tests set-ups for experiments on sorption kinetics and gas filtration kinetics in a porous medium. It was observed that two phenomena occur in these processes: transportation of gas into the porous solid and settling of gas molecules on the walls of the solid or within its volume. An experiment was carried out in which a thin resistance thermometer was quickly taken out of an argon stream and placed in carbon dioxide or the other way round. The measurement made it possible to determine the sorption time constant. It was demonstrated that the sorption rate is much higher than the filtration rate. Thus, filtration is the process describing the rate at which gas molecules penetrating the porous substance are adsorbed or desorbed. The sorption time constant is not >50 m. In the second experiment, the author determined the rate at which gas is liberated from coal grains. The measurement method was based on measurement of the pressure of desorbing gas in constant volume. The experiment involved measurement of the pressure of the gas liberated from the coal grains in a closed chamber. The kinetic curves obtained in this way were used to determine the carbon dioxide coefficient in coal grains. During the experiment, particular focus was put on the initial stage of gas liberation (up to 0.4 s). The slower process of gas transporting in the porous structure of coal is the transporting of gas through a coal briquette. Experimentally implemented variety of boundary conditions allowed for a more complete verification of the assumed theoretical model and possibly for the exact determination of filtration parameters. The experimental set-up built for this purpose, allows for pressure and temperature measurement on the briquette side surface.

Opis:
Dozens of thousands of tons of pesticide waste have been stored since 1950s. The corrosion of concrete bunkers and wells where the expired pesticides are deposited causes the risk of toxic leakage due to deteriorating conditions of these constructions. Such hazardous spill might be transported by underground waters in the form of so-called underground inflow and subsequently might reach a network of surface waters. Evaluating the adsorption potential of natural sorbent for pesticide was the main goal of this research. The adsorption balance was examined in order to analyze the influence of the adsorption mechanism of HCH molecules on vermicompost. The adsorption of HCH isotherms by vermicompost at constant temperature was tested experimentally. The Freundlich, Langmuir and BET’s adsorption isotherm models describe the experimental data within the acceptable error ranges. The Freundlich model proved to be more suitable for the experimental data. The form of isotherms indicates that HCH is adsorbed as a monolayer; therefore no obstacles occur in order for water and pesticide molecules to cover the adsorption surface.

Opis:
Here, we report the fabrication of supermacroporous monolith sorbents for acidic dye removal via chitosan cross-linking with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDGE) in acidic medium at sub-zero temperature. The developed porous structure with the thickness of polymer walls in the range of a few microns and a high content of primary amino groups determined the high sorption capacity of the sorbents toward Alizarin Red in a broad pH range (2–8). Due to the cross-linking via hydroxyl groups of the chitosan, the static sorption capacity of the fabricated materials was higher than that of chitosan flakes, even for sorbents cross-linked at EGDGE:NH2-chitosan with molar ratio 2:1. The monolith sorbents were mechanically stable and supported flow rates up to 300 bed volumes per hour. The breakthrough curve of Alizarin Red sorption showed that the effective dynamic sorption capacity was 283 mg/g, and 100% of the dye could be removed from the solutions with concentration of 100 mg/L. The monoliths can be regenerated with 0.3s M NaOH solution and used in several consecutive cycles of sorption/regeneration without loss of efficacy.

Opis:
This article presents the influence of chitin amination on the effectiveness of RB5 and RY84 dye sorption. For chitin and chitin modified by amination, the optimal pH of sorption and the maximum sorption capacity were determined in relation to two reactive dyes: Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and Reactive Yellow 84 (RY84), differing in the active group and molecular weight. Three sorption models were used to describe the experimental data: Langmuir, Langmuir 2 and Freundlich. The highest sorption capacity was obtained for aminated chitin for both tested dyes: 386.53 mg/g for RB5 and 261.56 mg/g for RY84. In the case of sorption on unmodified chitin, the sorption capacities were lower: up to 235.65 mg/g.d.m. for RB5 and 208.88 mg/g.d.m. for RY84. The modification of chitin by amination has a beneficial effect on the amount of dye adsorbed in the process. The adsorptive capacity increased by 1.6-times in the case of RB5 and 1.25-times in case of RY84.

Halloysite is commonly occuring in Poland a natural mineral which, due to its structure is very popular among researchers. First of all, the large number of sorption areas and their various selectivity makes the material capable of adsorbing the compounds of different nature at the same time. As a result, there is a lot of possible applications. In addition, ease of functionalization of the surface of the material increases its sorption capacity and makes its more attractive.

This paper summarises the results of methanol sorption on three selected coal samples from Polish collieries. These coals differ in terms of their degree of metamorphism (coal rank), petrography and elemental composition. It was found out that during the sorption of methanol, the sorption capacity is closely related to the structure of the coal surface and the amount of sorbed polar substance tends to decrease with the higher degree of metamorphism. Experimental data were plotted as isotherms. Empirical measurements were supported by thermodynamic analysis of aliphatic hydrocarbons sorption. The procedure is based on the Multisorption Model (MSM) designed for describing small molecules sorption in different types of carbonaceous materials (hard coals, lignites, active carbons).

The aim of the study is to assess the removal effectiveness of phosphorus compounds by using lanthanum-modified bentonite. This material was produced by the Australian company Phoslock® Water Solutions Pty Ltd. According to the company, Phoslock® has substantial capacity to bound phosphate anions. The investigation was carried out in steady conditions in laboratory model with beakers. The results of the study are related to the determination of hydraulic load, time of mixing and time of sedimentation. Research with synthetic wastewater was conducted in 4 beakers which were mixing by 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes respectively. Samples for analyzing were taken from each beaker after 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 24 hours of sedimentation. Studies were conducted to determine the optimal dose of Phoslock® with a known concentration of phosphate anions PO43- in artificial wastewater, time of mixing and time of sedimentation. All samples were taken before and after the treatment with Phoslock® and they were analyzed with following parameters: pH, total suspended solids, conductivity, turbidity, color and phosphate concentration. The carried out investigations confirmed high efficiency of phosphate anions PO43- removal (over 95%), and the final concentration as average was 0.1 mg/dm3. The application of Phoslock® for phosphate anions PO43- did not change the pH of final effluent.

The influence of the degree of deacetylation of chitosan from the range of DD = 75–90% on the effectiveness of sorption of nitrates from aqueous solutions was investigated. The scope of the research included: determining the effect of pH on the effectiveness of N-NO3 binding on chitosan sorbents and determining the sorption capacity of chitosan sorbents with different degrees of deacetylation after 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes. The effectiveness of sorption of nitrates on chitosan sorbents increased in the series DD=75% < DD=85% < DD=90%. Regardless of the degree of deacetylation, the sorption effectiveness of nitrates on chitosan was the highest at pH 4. The amount of nitrate-related sorbents was the highest after 30 min of sorption. A process time which was too long resulted in desorption of nitrates. The maximum sorption capacity for chitosan with the degree of deacetylation DD = 75, 85 and 90% was 0.59 mg N-NO3/g, 0.60 mg N-NO3/g and 0.87 mg N-NO3/g, respectively.

Measurements of activity concentrations and speciation of 137Cs in bottom sediments of the Curonian Lagoon were carried out in samples collected in 1999-2003. In addition, the sorption-desorption processes of caesium in disturbed bottom sediments of fresh and sea water systems were investigated in long-term experiments (up to 375 days) in order to better understand the caesium behaviour during the Baltic Sea water flooding events to the Curonian Lagoon. The modified Tessier method was used to study caesium associations with geochemical phases of bottom sediments. The effect of carbonate coatings of bottom sediments on the Cs sorption-desorption process was observed. The comparative analyses of 137Cs solid phase speciation in bottom sediments after 241 and 375 days of the sorption experiment with that of the 137Cs speciation, determined in the same sediment sample before the sorption experiment, indicated that after 375 days of sorption the equilibrium was not reached, however, the Cs distribution in geochemical phases was found to be close to equilibrium. The desorption experiments evidenced the release of caesium into solution from regular exchange complex and transfer from other phases to the frayed edge sites on the layered clay minerals with its further fixation in the crystal lattice. The remobilization of "fixed" caesium was not observed, on the contrary, the redistribution of caesium with its subsequent fixation in clay minerals was observed, and on a time scale its fixation kinetics was comparable with the sorption experiment. This study showed that flooding events of sea water contaminated with caesium can cause a significant accumulation of caesium in the bottom sediments of the Curonian Lagoon and result in the redistribution of 137Cs activity concentration in the bottom sediments from one area to another.

Adsorption of carbon dioxide on activated carbons has become extremely interesting in the field of energy and environment. Activated carbon is either used as a model to understand sorption processes on coals as a part of research on CO2 geological storage/Enhanced Coalbed Methane or as an adsorbent for processes such as natural gas treatment or CO2 separation from flue gas. The paper presents results of high-pressure CO2 sorption at the temperature of 318K on two similar activated carbons (Filtrasorb 400 and WAZ 0.6-2.4 mm) where one sample of WAZ was not subjected to any pretreatment procedure. Experimental results were fitted with three parameter Langmuir and therefore it was possible to calculate CO2 adsorbed phase densities. The WAZ activated carbon has a slightly lower sorption even though it was pretreated with the same procedure. The untreated sample of WAZ exhibited sorption which was lower over 15%. Calculated adsorbed phase densities differ between the activated carbons and the lowest value was obtained for the untreated WAZ sample (21.0 mol/dm3).
