Opis:
Basic soil chemical properties were assessed in a long-term tillage and crop rotation experiment 15 years after its establishment on a Chernozem in Raasdorf (Austria) with four tillage treatments – mouldboard ploughing, no-till, deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage – and two crop rotations. The following parameters were assessed: pHCaCl2, pHH2O, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, total organic carbon and total carbon. Among which, pHCaCl2, pHH2O, and total carbon increased with soil depth while electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, and total organic carbon decreased with soil depth. The differences between tillage treatments occurred after 15 years in the upper soil layer from 0-5 cm with higher values of electrical conductivity under no-till, deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage than with mouldboard ploughing, higher values of cation exchange capacity and total nitrogen for no-till than for mouldboard ploughing (with deep conservation tillage and shallow conservation tillage showing intermediate values) and more total organic carbon for no-till and deep conservation tillage than for mouldboard ploughing. At a 5-10 cm depth, electrical conductivity was higher for no-till than for mouldboard ploughing. Values of pHCaCl2 and pHH2O did not differ between tillage treatments in any soil layer. In deeper soil layers, tillage did not affect the analysed parameters. Crop rotation did not affect any of the analysed soil chemical properties.

Opis:
This study presents root colonization of Deschampsia cespitosa growing in the immediate vicinity of a former Pb/Zn smelter by arbuscular mycorhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septated endophytes (DSE) at different soil depths. AMF spores and species distribution in soil profile were also assessed. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) and DSE were found in D. cespitosa roots at all investigated soil levels. However, mycorrhizal colonization in topsoil was extremely low with sporadically occurring arbuscules. AM parameters: frequency of mycorrhization of root fragments (F%), intensity of root cortex colonization (M%), intensity of colonization within individual mycorrhizal roots (m%), and arbuscule abundance in the root system (A%) were markedly higher at 20–40, 40–60 cm soil levels and differed in a statistically significant manner from AM parameters from 0–10 and 10–20 cm layers. Mycorrhizal colonization was negatively correlated with bioavailable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations. The number of AMF spores in topsoil was very low and increased with soil depth (20–40 and 40–60 cm). At the study area spores of three morphologically distinctive AMF species were found: Archaeospora trappei, Funneliformis mosseae and Scutellospora dipurpurescens. The fourth species Glomus tenue colonized roots of D. cespitosa and was observed in the root cortex at 20–40 and 40–60 soil depth, however, its spores were not found at the site.

Opis:
The research was conducted in 268 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands, separately on soils of different moisture – non−gleyic (215 plots) and gleyic (53). The site index (B) of every Scots pine stand was determine as mean height of the ten thickest trees per 0.1 hectare, recalculated for the base−age of 100 years. The results show clearly negative relationship between the pine site index and pH values, that is probably caused by positive impact of soil acidity on (i) mycorrhiza symbiosis and (ii) nutrients releasing from minerals in weathering processes. The optimum soil pH for Scots pine site index was defined as regarding ca. 4.5 pHH2O and 4.0 pHKCl. There was not stated any impact of CaCO3 content in soil parent material on pine growth. The soil depth was positively related to the site index only when non−gleyic soils were concerned. On gleyic soils any relation between soil depth and pine growth was found. The results showed that in different soil moisture conditions, properties of opposite soil zones play the key role for the pine growth. When pine was planted on non−gleyic soils, the site index was much more related to properties of deeper horizons and parent material than of topsoil, while on gleyic soils the site index was correlated to properties of surface soil layer mainly.
