Opis:
Glasshouse experiments were carried out in Wagner pots containing 6 kg of soil. The amounts were compared of Zn, Pb and Cd taken up by the crop of spring wheat from contamination introduced into the soil or upon leaves. The heavy metals were labelled with the radioactive isotopes 65Zn, 210Pb and 115Cd. The experiment was performed as a series of independent analyses in four replications. The dynamics of the labelled heavy metals translocation from contaminations sprayed on the upper or bottom side of the flag leaf was also tested. The highest concentration of 65Zn was found in the straw and grain of wheat. Much higher amounts of the metals appeared to have been taken up by the plants from leaf contamination than from the soil. The highest dynamics of translocation from leaves to other vegetative and generative organs of plants was that of zinc.

The home surroundings (109 places) of 120 children with diagnosed toxocarosis were examined to assess if the presence of 7Toxocara spp. eggs in the soil corresponds with the occurrence of clinical cases. 31 places (28.4%) were found to be contaminated. The highest level of soil contamination was revealed in rural and suburban regions (15.6% and 11.9%, respectively), while in urban areas it was 0.9%. These results confirmed that soil contamination might be recognized as a very important factor in the epidemiology of human toxocarosis.

Opis:
One of the most important problems threatening the health of natural resources and, in turn, the food safety of societies is environmental contamination. Heavy metals are considered as the environmental pollutants. The entry of heavy metals into the soil is done through the atmospheric sources and mostly via melting plants, oil refieries and power plants. Due to the mazut consumption in some seasons, power plants are considered as a threat to the soil. This study was conducted with the aim of evaluating contamination of some heavy metals including copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, and nickel in the soils around the Shahid Salimi power plant, Neka located in Mazandaran province, north of Iran. One of the greatest threats is the possible contamination of cultivated paddy by pollutant elements. A number of 50 samples from the soil around the power plant were taken from a depth of 0–20 cm within the form of a regular grid and the concentration of the corresponding metals was measured in each of them. The mean background concentration of copper, nickel, lead, zinc, and cadmium was 36.2, 339.8, 90.8, 13.8, and 0.20 mg∙kg, respectively. The maximum mean contamination factor belongs to nickel, lead, copper, zinc, and cadmium, respectively. The frequency of the obtained contamination evaluation classes indicates that the majority of the analyzed samples have a medium level of contamination. Copper, nickel, and lead belong to the class of very high contaminants. By comparing the concentrations of the heavy metals of studied region with quality standard of Iranian soil resources, presented by the Department of Environment Protection of Iran, it was observed that the concentrations of cadmium, zinc, and copper have been signifiant at the level of 5% based on the standards determined by the agency for agricultural uses, environmental standard and groundwater level. In other words, they do not have conflct with the determined standard at any of the three levels.

Opis:
Four metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) were assayed in soils within the impact zone of the Miasteczko Slaskie Zinc Smelter (southern Poland). The investigated area is afforested and has been subjected for a long time to intensive deposition of metal-bearing dusts. Soil pHKCl varied broadly from very acidic (pHKCl = 3.4) to slightly alkaline (pHKCl = 7.2). Organic carbon (Corg) content fluctuated within a large range, i.e., 5.5 - 66.4 g kg-1, whereas the cation exchange capacity (CEC) was in most cases markedly low (from 1.4 to 5.9 cmol(+)kg-1), with exception for two sites (C and D) exhibiting values of 26.8 and 15.1 cmol(+)kg-1, respectively. Total Zn, Pb and Cd contents exceeded manifold their respective levels in the Earth crust (reference value - RV)) as well as those suggested as background levels for Poland (BLP). The assessment of the contamination of soils by these metals was undertaken on the basis of geoaccumulation indices (lgeo), contamination factors Cl and degrees of contamination (Cdeg). The overall metal contamination represented practically two classes: low contamination for Cu; considerable to extreme contamination (in ascending order) for Zn, Cd, and Pb. The contribution (BLP-based assessment) of each metal to the degree of contamination index varied from 2.14 % (for Cu), via 26.33% (for Zn) to quite equally for Cd and Pb, both representing 35.22% and 36.32, respectively. It is worth pointing out that copper was the sole metal to threaten the least (Figure 1) the soils of the investigated ecosystem.

Opis:
Nickel has been listed as a priory control pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Compared with other methods, the combination of vegetation and the addition of mineral sorbents to heavy metal-contaminated soils can be readily applied on a large scale because of the simplicity of technology and low cost. Halloysite and zeolite, among others, can be used for this purpose. A greenhouse study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using natural zeolite, as well as raw and modified halloysite for the remediation of simulated Ni-contaminated soil. The soil was spiked with five doses of nickel, i.e. 0 (control), 80, 160, 240 and 320 mg·Ni kg-1·soil. The average accumulation of heavy metals in nickel-contaminated soil was found to follow the decreasing order of Ni>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb. The highest reduction of Pb content was observed in soil samples taken from pots containing 80 and 160 mg·kg-1 of Ni along with the addition of modified halloysite. The strongest effects were caused by natural zeolite, which significantly reduced the average content of chromium. Contamination at 320 mg Ni·kg-1

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to estimate the environmental and health risk of the Šar Mountains (Kosovo) for depleted uranium contamination. The risk assessment of the contamination is needed since, in the spring of 1999, conflict with bombarding took place in the territory of the Western Balkans, during which depleted uranium ammunition was used. In Serbia and Montenegro, such tests were performed; based on them, some territories were decontaminated. Šar Mountains is particularly important as it is one of the few water-rich areas in Kosovo. Therefore, soil and water samples were taken from characteristic places in the Šar Mountains aquatorium. Tests of the samples were performed under well-controlled conditions. The measurement uncertainty was less than 5%. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that there was no contamination of the Šar Mountains with depleted uranium. This conclusion can be extended to the broader area around the Šar Mountains, as it is a safe area surrounded by high mountains

Opis:
The research on soil and consumption yield quality at the impact zone of the petrochemical plant in Płock (ZRiP), conducted in the 1970s and 80s, proved that the emissions from the plant threatened the agricultural production within the area. As the emission levels from the ZRiP have signifi cantly dropped in recent years, analyses were conducted in order to assess the current content of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils as well as in wheat grain and potato tuber cultivated within the area. The results showed that the soils were not contaminated with above mentioned heavy metals, but the level of cadmium was exceeded in potato tubers collected from three research points and in wheat grain collected from one point.
W przypadku zawartości analizowanych pierwiastków metalicznych w plonie konsumpcyjnym stwierdzono nadmierną ilość cynku w bulwach ziemniaków (we wszystkich próbach) i ziarnie pszenicy (w jednej próbce).

Soil samples and snails – Helix pomatia Linnaeus, 1758 specimens were collected from the region of Małopolska. Research based on soil from this area showed a differentiated degree of environmental contamination, which influenced the composition of elements that build mollusc shells. Concentrations of Pb, Mn, Cd, Fe, Zn and Cu in the snail shells and soil varied between localities. The highest of these concentrations were found in the soil in the city of Cracow. They were higher than those measured in the regions outside the city, 7 times in the case of Cd, and up to 123 times higher for Cu. Positive association between soil pollution and shell contamination can be observed (rs ≈ 0.9). A high concentration of metals in the environment and their bioavailability causes long-term accumulation of these elements in Helix pomatia shells.

The aim of this study was to compare the amount of radiocaesium in chosen compartments of environment in two localities of Košice vicinity (Košice and Jasov). Prevailing part of radiocaesium is in the upper layer of soils and specific activity of 137Cs in the first layer for locality Jasov in 2001 achieved 21.49 Bq.kg 1. Transfer factor values estimated for mixed grasses and for individual years varied within the range of 0.22 to 0.56 at locality Košice and of 0.09 to 0.19 at locality Jasov. On the base of results from modified Tessier sequential extraction method we determined that more than 50% of this radionuclide is in the soil in not extractable fraction. From studied species of mushrooms in sample of Rozites caperata the specific activity achieved 1822.0 Bq.kg 1 d.w.
