The article is summarized with conclusions.

    Antonina Kłoskowska publikując w 1964 roku „Kulturę masową” nie tylko zaprezentowała swój stosunek do tej postaci manifestacji kultury, ale także wypracowała podstawowe instrumentarium jej analizy. W precyzowaniu przez autorkę pojęcia kultury jako obszaru badań ważne miejsce zajęły inspiracje zaczerpnięte z semiotyki. Z czasem kwestie semiotyczne znalazły się w centrum rozważań A. Kłoskowskiej dotyczących określenia pola zainteresowań socjologii kultury. Ich podsumowaniem była „Socjologia kultury” z 1981 roku. Zawarte w niej ustalenia były później punktem odniesienia dla tekstów drukowanych w latach dziewięćdziesiątych minionego stulecia. To prawda, że wówczas już same kwestie semiotyczne nie zajmowały pierwszoplanowego miejsca w tych studiach, ale w zadziwiający sposób współbrzmią te teksty z propozycjami rozwijanymi w obszarze semiotyki, w podejściu wyodrębniającym się jako semioetyka. Nie tylko są więc one odpowiedzią autorki na wyzwania współczesności, ale mogą być źródłem inspiracji dla nowych pokoleń czytelników.
    Antonina Kłoskowska, publishing in “Mass Culture” in 1964, not only presented her approach to those types of cultural manifestations, but also elaborated the basic set of instruments for their analysis. In the author’s specification of the concept of culture as a specific area of scientific research, she took special inspiration from the field of semiotics. Over time, semiotic issues and questions became the focus of her considerations as she defined her own field of interest in the sociology of culture. She encapsulated her research interests in “The Sociology of Culture” in 1981. Her postulates from this article later became the focal point for her work in the 1990s. While it’s true that questions concerning semiotics per se were not the main focus of these studies, her texts resonate in a surprisingly way with propositions rooted in the field of semiotics, resulting in the development of her unique approach based on semioethics. Thus not only do the author’s postulates represent a contemporary challenge, but they also constitute a source of inspiration for a new generation of readers.

    The article presents the rise of Polish cultural studies into a scientific discipline and academic trend, placing it in a broader perspective of culture as such and of early-modernist intellectual approaches to it. Revealing the philosophical, social and political context behind cultural studies, the paper uses it as a background to discuss different approaches to reflection on culture which cultural studies had to confront on its path to its cultural identity. This is where culture in its general theoretical dimension meets the specific Polish historical conditions.

    One of the most powerful ways in which we can globalize knowledge, and sociology, is to figure ways in which leading intellectual figures within insufficiently articulated knowledge cultures might inform readings of the other’s work. With the recent revivals of Antonina Kłoskowska and W.E.B. Du Bois in Polish and US sociology respectively, it is a propitious time to figure the ways in which their scholarship aligns, contrasts, and can mutually transform. In particular, the two are both concerned for how marginalized communities with their associated subjectivities engage dominant cultures, but Kłoskowska works within a national/regional frame and Du Bois a global and racial one. Too, Du Bois theorizes from within that marginalized community, with political pointedness, not from outside it or with any attempt to refrain from value judgements. Finally, while Du Bois blends Marxist accounts with a culturally rich account of Blackness and its others, Kłoskowska offers a more semiotic and intersubjective hermeneutic view of how various fusions of horizons might also create a more open world. Those who extend Kłoskowska’s tradition exemplify that very potential while Du Bois, in his very conditions of existence, made racism’s hardest shell manifest. Figuring exemplars of national and racial leadership might, however, invite powerful figurations of the future, but only when their cultural and political constitutions are made explicit.

    In the field of sociological studies of culture, more and more attention is being paid to the so-called prosumption. Based on the already existing general concepts related to it, the author presents its functioning in the sphere of popular culture, proposing the term: culture of prosumption. More and more frequently the enterprises within the entertainment industry seek their ways to success in a grass-root emergence of groups of acquirers working for a culture text. The use of the amateurs’ participation has become a dominant business model. The aim of the article is to organize the state-of-the-art knowledge on prosumption. Additionally, the author proposes a convenient way of diagnosing its mechanisms – it is easiest to describe the culture of prosumption through the analysis of the most engaged recipients, namely the fans, who constitute the avant-garde of the culture. The fans illustrate all the essential features of pop-culture prosumption.
    W socjologii kultury coraz większą uwagę poświęca się tak zwanej prosumpcji. Bazując na już istniejących ogólnych koncepcjach z nią związanych, autor przedstawia jej funkcjono- wanie w sferze popkultury i wprowadza pojęcie „kultura prosumpcji”. Dziś przedsiębiorstwa z branży rozrywkowej drogi do sukcesu upatrują w wykształceniu oddanej grupy nabywców, pracujących na rzecz danego tekstu kulturowego. Autor proponuje sposób diagnozowania me- chanizmów kultury prosumpcji – najłatwiej przez badania najbardziej zaangażowanych od- biorców, to jest fanów, stanowiących awangardę kultury prosumpcji. W przypadku wielbicieli najwyraźniej uwidaczniają się wszystkie istotne cechy prosumpcji popkulturowej. Aby zobra- zować tezę o podstawowej roli fanów, autor prezentuje, jak badanie środowisk fanowskich pomagać może w odkrywaniu prawidłowości globalnego zróżnicowania kultury prosumpcji. W artykule zaproponowane zostają kryteria, na podstawie których sądzić można o stanie owej kultury w różnych rejonach świata.

    The phenomenon of publication, in the same year, of two books having identical titles, is enough to study the theory presented therein. Both books feature the notion of culture, which was broadly elaborated by both authors: Antonina Kłoskowska and Raymond Williams already in their earlier analyses. It turns out, however, that no matter the title of a book interesting to us, culture is tackled differently in both of them. Williams seems to keep using anthropological definition of culture, while Kłoskowska suggests sociological approach. A reflection on culture by the English academic has shaped the character of British cultural studies and their subsequent follow-ups around the world. A question arises, to what extent the sociological approach by Kłoskowska may give impetus to cultural research in Poland, especially when symbolic culture appears beyond the principle of autotelism.

    The author juxtaposes the ideas contained in the classic essay “Urbanism as a Way of Life” (1938) by the Chicago sociologist Louis Wirth with the Americanism of the New York painter Edward Hopper (active approximately 1900–1967). She seeks parallels between the sociological description of urban conditions and the paintings of an artist who was called the illustrator of the American lifestyle. At the beginning, she discusses American spatial philosophy and the premises of urban researchers connected with the Chicago School. Then she compares a portion of Wirth’s essay and Hopper’s work in terms of their portrayal of the metropolitan lifestyle. She describes the sociologist’s and artist’s pessimistic visions of urbanism, in which urbanization produces the depersonalization of interpersonal relations, isolation, anomie, and the consequent loneliness of individuals.

    Dzisiejsze spojrzenie na dzieło Antoniny Kłoskowskiej prowadzi do podjęcia dwóch kwestii ogólnych. Pierwsza z nich dotyczy istoty kultury, a także jej historii oraz obecnego stanu. Druga odnosi się do statusu socjologii kultury jako jednej z dziedzin wiedzy o kulturze. Obydwa te zagadnienia rozpatrywane są na dwóch poziomach: rzeczowym (czym jest kultura? czym jest socjologia kultury?) i dyskursowym (jak kształtowały się dzieje pojęcia kultury i pojęcia socjologii kultury?). W tych ramach omawiam następujące problemy: kultura w tzw. węższym rozumieniu a kultura duchowa; socjologia kultury a socjologia kulturowa; autoteliczność a autonomia kultury; homogenizacja a hybrydowość kultury; oraz dystancjacja a dedystantacjacja. W tych kontekstach nawiązuję w szczególności do koncepcji Alfreda Webera, Jeffreya Alexandera, Theodora Adorno i Karla Mannheima.
    A contemporary look at the oeuvre of Antonina Kłoskowska leads to consideration of two general issues. The first of these concerns the essence of culture as well as its history and current state of affairs. The second question involves the status of the sociology of culture as one of the domains of knowledge regarding culture itself. Each of these issues is discussed on two separate levels: culture as substance (what is culture? what is the sociology of culture?), and culture as discourse (how have the notions of culture and of the sociology of culture been formed?). It is within this framework that the following problems are addressed: culture in a narrower sense of the term vs. intellectual culture (Geisteskultur); the sociology of culture vs. cultural sociology; the autotelicity vs. autonomy of culture; the homogenization vs. hybridity of culture; and, finally, distantiation vs. de-distantiation.     For sociologically oriented research into memory, the finding of connections between cultural mechanisms of constructing the past and their socio-structural effects is important. In this context, a principle linking phenomena of memory, culture, and social structure should be of use. This article is devoted to Yuri Lotman’s concept of the semiotic memory of culture, which the author believes could serve as a generative rule for this type of research in the sociology of culture. In the case of studies on social memory, Lotman’s concept constitutes a methodological bridge between phenomena of social memory and the transmission of culture, enabling the question of how the memory of the individual participates in collective memory to be answered.

    Refleksje Georga Simmla poświęcone kulturze są dziś bardzo często przywoływane na gruncie nauk społecznych i humanistycznych. Wiele z tych sądów uważa się za wyjątkowo innowacyjne, a wręcz prorocze względem rozpoznań wypracowywanych przez intelektualistów pod koniec XX i na początku XXI wieku. Biorąc to pod uwagę, dokonuję w niniejszym artykule zestawienia analiz autora Filozofii pieniądza ze współczesnymi pracami z dziedziny teorii i socjologii kultury. W pierwszej części tekstu zwracam uwagę na to, w jaki sposób refleksje Simmla dotyczące zależności między kulturą obiektywną i subiektywną, a także transcendowania jako immanentnej cechy jednostki, wpisują się w aktualne debaty poświęcone relacji między strukturą a sprawstwem. W kolejnej części odnoszę się do rozpoznań Simmla poświęconych fragmentaryzacji i indywidualizacji kultury oraz coraz większemu znaczeniu konsumpcjonizmu w życiu społecznym, wskazując na ich przydatność w analizach kultury współczesnej. W zakończeniu artykułu zamieszczam – obok podsumowania – ogólniejsze refleksje na temat znaczenia rozwiązań przyjętych przez Simmla w radzeniu sobie z wyzwaniami stojącymi przed teorią i socjologia kultury w XXI wieku.
    Georg Simmel’s reflections on culture are very often invoked in the contemporary social sciences and humanities. Many of his thoughts are considered to be exceptionally innovative, and even prophetic towards analyses that have been developing since the end of the 20th century. Taking this into consideration, in this article I compare Simmel’s works with contemporary papers on the theory and sociology of culture. In the first part of the article, I draw attention to the way in which Simmel’s reflections on such topics as: the relationship between objective and subjective culture and transcendence as an immanent feature of an individual resemble current debates devoted to the relationship between structure and agency. In the second part, I refer to Simmel’s analyses of the fragmentation and individualization of culture and the growing importance of consumerism in social life. I emphasise that they may be used as an analytic frame for reflections on contemporary culture. In the closing part, I include – along with the summary – more general reflections on the importance of Simmel’s thoughts in coping with the challenges facing the theory and sociology of culture in the 21st century.

    The article deals with selected processes taking place in contemporary cultural space. These phenomena have profound impact on the quality of social inclusion, the level of cultural participation, and the identity formation and cultural awareness of citizens, which are the fundamental determinants of the design and conduct of animation in the local environment. To the author, analysis and deconstruction of these processes the basis for the discussion of the identity of modern cultural animators.
