There are two main subjects raised in the article, meaning the development of the occupation of a social worker and the pursuit to make the work for the ones in need professional. The latter has its genesis in the actions taken in the period of annexation. Trials to nd an efficient method to help people in dealing with life crisis have not been fully achieved yet although lasting over a century. Therefore, there is a question whether and in what extend may the practice of the following decades be used to build the occupation of a social worker, which will gain a status of a profession.

In order to determine the initial level of formation of professional and legal competence of the future social workers were used methods adapted by the author “Motivation of professional activity” by Zamfyr (Рамендик, 2013, p. 123) (in modification of Rean), which gave us the opportunity to diagnose the students‟ motivation for professional activity. It is based on the concept of internal and external motivation. We can talk about the internal type of motivation if the activity in itself is significant for the individual. And if in the basis of professional activity motivation lies the aspiration to satisfy other needs (in particular, reasons of social prestige, salary, etc.), in this case we can talk about the external motivation. External motives differentiated on external positive and external negative.

The authors explore the complexities of human dignity, analyze human dignity as a concept and its position within the framework of today's social work practices. Autorzy dokonują analizy złożoności zagadnienia godności ludzkiej oraz godności ludzkiej jako koncepcji oraz jej umiejscowienia w ramach dzisiejszych form i praktyk pracy społecznej. W związku z tym autorzy rozważają tematykę pojmowania godności ludzkiej, w tym godności ludzkiej jako wartości społeczno-prawnej, jej istotności dla pracy społecznej w ogóle oraz z racji podstawowych wartości relewantnych dla pracy społecznej. Autorzy egzaminują ewolucję podejść pracy społecznej wobec godności ludzkiej koncentrując się na działalności organizacji międzynarodowych, ich członków stowarzyszonych i partnerów związanych z pracą społeczną, których zadaniem jest m.in. promować oraz dbać o przestrzeganie wartości godności ludzkiej w dostarczaniu codziennych praktyk i usług pracy społecznej.

Jednym z podstawowych narzędzi stosowanych w pracy socjalnej w większości krajów europejskich jest kontrakt socjalny. Stanowi on rodzaj porozumienia między pracownikiem socjalnym a osobą (lub rodziną) korzystającą z pomocy, które dokładnie określa i opisuje wzajemne zobowiązania, wymagania, prawa i zakres odpowiedzialności obu stron. Według założeń kontrakt ma być efektywną metodą diagnozy problemów klienta oraz mobilizować obie strony do intensywniejszej pracy na rzecz umożliwienia klientowi osiągnięcia pełniejszej kontroli nad własnym życiem. Niestety w praktyce pracy socjalnej oraz jej prawnym i instytucjonalnym kontekście tkwią różnego typu ograniczenia i przeszkody mogące prowadzić do wypaczania założeń leżących u podstaw stosowania kontraktu. W niektórych sytuacjach, za pośrednictwem kontraktu pracownicy socjalni i ich klienci realizują interesy i osiągają cele odmienne od założonych. Artykuł pokazuje sposoby, warunki i ograniczenia stosowania kontraktu socjalnego w Polsce (na przykładzie łódzkiego MOPS).
One of the basic tools used in social assistance in the majority of European countries is a contract. It is an agreement between a social worker and the person who benefits (or their family) which defines and exactly describes their mutual obligations, expectations, rights and responsibilities. Theoretically, a contract is supposed to be an effective way to identify the client’s problems and to make both sides work harder to enable the client to gain greater personal autonomy. Sadly, there are various limitations and difficulties in social work practice and in the legal and organizational context capable of distorting the principles of a contract’s completion. Through the contract, both workers and clients sometimes realize different interests and achieve different goals than were expected. The article shows the ways, conditions and limitations of fulfilling the contract in Poland.

In the light of rules of labour law a social worker has the same status as every different worker employed. The law does not “favour” workers, and surely quite justly. Therefore, all workers are even in the light of the majesty of law. And this makes up the superb interpretation for deliberations being conducted here (even in the sense of law). However, except for clear formal and legal criteria, there are different criteria for the worker no less important than their clear legal aspects. The herewith article has just treated about them (it concerns personal character traits). So, what is this “social worker”? It is an exceptional worker due to the following reasons: - it is a people-oriented job, but in a different way than a teacher’s job, a doctor’s job, or a clergyman’s job. A social worker does not act as a healer, but fully as a carer, so in the sphere of the material and spiritual existence, - a social worker co-exists with a person he looks after. He is emotionally involved with that person, - a social worker is not a clerk. He does not work from … to …, but in accordance with the specific nature of the situations and problems, - a social worker must possess not only professional qualifications, but should be well-mannered and at a suitable ethical and moral level of development. These are really demanding criteria, - a social worker shares his fate with the fate of the aggrieved party. It makes this work exceptional and peculiar, - a social worker becomes in certain situations someone like a confessor for a person receiving help, - social work is something more than “public relations”, - social work is, first of all, dedication and devotion, and it makes up its exceptionality, - a social worker is a servant of a person waiting for help. He is also an adviser and a consoler. Not everyone can be a social worker, because apart from education and qualifications, he has to have a kind of “calling”, the inner need of the spirit.

The definition of social work is relatively young but at the same time it is of the most progressively developing professions nowadays. The aim of the article is the analysis, the comparison and the description of global trends and national standards of ethics in social work practice. Ethics is presented as an integral part of social work - as a profession and an academic discipline. Codes of ethics are important tools for sensitising people who perform and study social work, although these do not replace their own, internally motivated sense of responsibility. This article discusses not only the current International Code of Ethics and the Slovak Code of Ethics for Social Worker and Social Work Assistant but also it demonstrates the diachronic aspect with regards to changes in the last two decades in the international and national understanding of the profession and ethics of social work.

Contemporary society around the world is highly volatile and therefore any support system that responds to the real needs of people must be constantly evolving. As a result, new and innovative solutions appear in the social welfare system. However, the analysis of public policies and programs shows that many good ideas are not implemented in the daily work of employees who directly support clients. There is a resistance on their part to novelty and their openness to the implementation of new concepts is limited. The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of openness to change. The study was conducted on a group of 186 social welfare workers (132 social workers and 54 family assistants). Two research categories were adopted: declared and actual openness to change. The results of the study showed that social assistance workers declare a high level of openness to change, but their measured level of real openness is actually low. Although employees declare great support for new solutions, they do, in fact, have very low tolerance for uncertainty and the ability to take risks, which is inherent in the implementation of innovations. Thus, a gap arises between the declared and actual value. This discovery is crucial for the successful implementation of innovations and may be one of the more important obstacles to its realization. It is necessary to change the current approach and broaden the activities preparing for implementation of new solutions so that the actual readiness to change of employees is at a sufficient level.
