    This article examines the social protest movement against the socialist regime in the Baltic port cities of Szczecin and Gdańsk, in particular between 1970 and 1981. It intends to discuss the impact of these strikes on the formation of a regional and national political culture, which is widely connected to the concept of civil society, in a longer perspective. While Szczecin, after the bloody clashes with the regime’s law enforcement in mid-December 1970, saw a longer-lasting period of strikes, which led to an intervention by First Secretary Edward Gierek, these protests remained limited to the community of workers and did not yet challenge the rule of the Polish United Workers’ Party. They contributed, however, to the formation of a local Polish identity from below. However, in Gdańsk and, in a broader perspective, in the entire Polish Tricity (consisting of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot) a close cooperation between workers and intellectuals emerged during the 1970s, which proved to be decisive during the strike of August 1980. In Szczecin, the similarly strong strike movement of summer 1980 lacked the national (and international) resonance of the protests in Gdańsk. In addition, the political impact and the collective commemoration (as well as the scholarly research) of the workers’ protests in the case of Szczecin remained mostly a local issue even after the fall of the socialist regime. Which stands, once again, in sharp contrast to the situation of Gdańsk.

    The language of fire has sometimes been used in illustrative ways to describe how social movements spark, flare, and sometimes sputter out. Building on recent scholarship about protest camps, as well as borrowing language from environmental historians about fire behavior, this article draws from ethnographic research to describe the pyropolitics of the Indigenous-led anti-pipeline movement at Standing Rock-examining how fire was used as analogy and in material ways to support and drive the movement to protect water from industrial capitalism. Describing ceremonial fires, social fires, home fires, cooking fires, and fires lit in protest on the front line, this article details how fire was put to work in myriad ways in order to support the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), and ensure social order and physical survival at the camps built to house supporters of the movement. This article concludes with descriptions of how these sparks ignited at Standing Rock followed activists home to their own communities, to other struggles that have been taken up to resist pipelines, the contamination of water, and the appropriation of Indigenous land.

    W badaniu dotyczącym organizatorek Ogólnopolskiego Strajku Kobiet (OSK) – jednym z największych, jakie dotychczas zrealizowano w Polsce – przeprowadziłyśmy prawie 100 wywiadów CAWI i PAPI z lokalnymi koordynatorkami grup OSK z całego kraju. Naszym celem było poznanie uczestniczek ogólnopolskiej sieci, która w 2016 roku umożliwiła organizację protestów przeciwko próbom kolejnego zaostrzenia restrykcyjnego prawa aborcyjnego. Chciałyśmy dowiedzieć się, co skłoniło je do aktywizmu i czy przed OSK były aktywne społeczno-politycznie również w innych obszarach. Ciekawiło nas też to, jak rozumieją one niejednoznaczne pojęcie „zwykłej kobiety”. Istotnym wnioskiem z badań jest to, że chociaż prawie wszystkie nasze respondentki zgadzają się co do tego, iż uczestniczki Strajku Kobiet w 2016 roku były „zwykłymi kobietami”, to ich sposób użycia terminu „zwykłe” różni się od prawicowych operacjonalizacji tego słowa, wiąże się bowiem przede wszystkim z różnorodnością protestujących. Na podstawie ustaleń dotyczących krzyżujących się pozycji społecznych, na które zwracają uwagę koordynatorki OSK, omawiamy kwestię sprawczości i możliwe bariery ograniczające udział w życiu publicznym.
    In one of the largest studies on coordinators of the Polish Women’s Strike (OSK) conducted in Poland so far, we carried out almost 100 CAWI and PAPI interviews with local coordinators of OSK groups from the entire country. Our aim was to get to know the people behind a countrywide network that organized the successful 2016 protests against attempts to tighten the already restrictive abortion law. We also wanted to find out what drove them to activism and how they understood the ambivalent concept of an “ordinary woman.” Although almost all of our respondents agree that the participants of the Women’s Strike in 2016 were “ordinary women”, the way they use the term “ordinary” does not align with the right-wing operationalisations of that term; on the contrary, it is associated with the diversity of the protesters. Based on the findings about the kinds of social positionings and intersections that OSK coordinators pay attention to, we discuss the issue of agency and possible reasons constraining participation in public (socio-political) life.

    Autorzy podkreślają, że wszelkie działania społeczne oraz ich interpretacje podlegają czterem typom niewidoczności: psychologicznej, strategicznej, socjologicznej oraz cywilizacyjnej. Tekst niewidoczności te charakteryzuje, by za pomocą ich heurystyki zinterpretować proaborcyjne protesty w reakcji na orzeczenie Trybunału Konstytucyjnego. Najważniejsze wnioski: Rządzący Polską od roku 2015 popełnili błąd socjologiczny, polegający na przeszacowaniu przywiązania społeczeństwa polskiego do wartości konserwatywnych. Z kolei środowiska progresywne popełniają błąd cywilizacyjny, polegający na postawieniu na formę ustrojową, która na Zachodzie przeżywa poważny kryzys. Nie sposób zrozumieć szerokiej skali i wysokiej dynamiki protestów bez wzięcia pod uwagę dezorientacji poznawczej i moralnej przyniesionej przez cyfrową fazę kapitalizmu globalnego. Nieusuwalny charakter w/w typów niewidoczności oznacza, iż we współczesnych, złożonych i skonfliktowanych społeczeństwach żadna siła społeczna, żadna ideologia (ale i żadna teoria nauk społecznych) nie może sobie rościć prawa do wyłącznego reprezentowania całości społecznej.
    All social actions as well as their interpretations are subject to four types of invisibility: psychological, strategic, sociological, and civilizational. The text characterizes these invisibilities in order to interpret the Polish pro-abortion protests in response to the Constitutional Court ruling. Key findings. The authorities ruling Poland since 2015 have made a “sociological” mistake of overestimating the commitment of Polish society to conservative values. On the other hand, the progressive circles have made a mistake of civilizational nature unreflexively betting on a political form that in the West undergoes a serious crisis. It is impossible to understand the broad scale and high dynamics of the protests without taking into account the cognitive and moral disorientation brought by the digital phase of global capitalism. The irremovable character of the mentioned types of invisibility means that in modern, complex and conflicted societies no social force, no ideology (but also no social theory) can claim the right to exclusively represent the social whole.
