Opis:
The sector of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) is an important part of the insurance market. The growth of the economy and the changes occurring in Poland are the reasons for some changes in the behavior of entrepreneurs on the insurance market. The Authors of this article present the results of an annual survey carried out between 2010-2012 on a representative group of small and medium-sized enterprises. The data obtained during the surveys concentrates on entrepreneurs awareness of insurance and their opinions and behavior on the insurance market. Since the surveys are carried out in regular intervals it is possible to define the directions of changes in the usage of insurance products by small and medium-size enterprises.

Corresponding author: Daria Motała Received: 24 January 2018 Abstract Accepted: 12 June 2018 In small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the ways of operating are dependent on the specific nature of their business activity, while management methods are often used intuitively. The paper shows that specialization, defined as offering products to companies from one or from two to four industries, is of great importance among SMEs in the gas sector. The analysis of the applied management methods allows us to conclude that the most important ones are those related to human capital.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of SMEs on job creation in the WB6 countries (North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Serbia). During the last two decades, the countries in the Western Balkans region have faced different economic challenges, including employment-related issues and the question of who is in fact the creator of new jobs in this region. The paper employs explanatory methodology, through analysis of the statistical data collected in the Enterprise Survey conducted by the World Bank Group. The data analyzed covers three periods, i.e., year 1 (2009), year 2 (2013), year 3 (2019). The surveys were administered to a representative sample of 5358 firms in the non-agricultural, formal, private sectors, including small, medium and large enterprises. The paper concludes that the most widespread type of business activity in the Wester Balkan countries are SMEs, which tend to employ more than large enterprises, with an average share of 45%-77%, by which they contribute more to new job creation, compared to large enterprises, and are indeed the ones reducing job scarcity and exhibiting a smaller share in job shrinkage. The implications arising from the paper are twofold, i.e., they can inspire both the academic and researcher circles to analyze even further the impact of SMEs, by including additional measuring indicators as well the policy makers to revise the policy of assisting SMEs in any means possible. The paper fills the gap in the existing literature dealing with the impact of SMEs on job creation in the WB region. The relevance of this research stands in fact that the study addresses the impact and relevance of SMEs’ job creation in countries known for their long transition period.

The purpose of this comparative study is to explore the differences in the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) between micro versus small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We have selected three dimensions of EO (proactiveness, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy) for our analysis. We have analyzed the data collected from 1141 respondents during the period of 2015 from 14 regions of the Czech Republic, which consists of 740 micro firms and 401 small and medium firms. Empirical results of our paper show significant differences between micro versus small and medium enterprises in terms of proactiveness and autonomy. However, we can only partially confirm that micro firms are statistically different from the SMEs in terms of competitive aggressiveness. Thus, our paper enables better understanding of the EO from the firm size perspective, when they have different levels of resources.

The Professionalization of Human Resource Management in Small and Medium Enterprises
Opis:
The aim of the article is to indicate areas as well as the scope of professionalization of HRM in small and medium enterprises. The reason behind the undertaking of this problem may be found in the results of research conducted on SMEs that show that the owners or managing directors of such companies tend to focus on main business areas, paying less attention to other functions deemed “supporting.” One of them is the personnel function. This is in spite of the fact that professional literature considers human capital a very significant factor in the organization. Thus, the quality of HRM processes in such entities continues to be low. In its first part, the article defines the concept of HRM professionalization and indicates the main ways used in its measurement and assessment. The successive part discusses the primary areas of HRM professionalization, taking into account the specifics of SMEs. The last part is devoted to presenting and discussing the results of empirical research relating to the level of professionalization in training activities in SMEs. The analyses conducted include all the stages of the training process, where the statistical exemplification of the data constitutes a basis for the formulation of final conclusions.

Sector of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is significant in every market economy. Small and medium-sized enterprises are generally considered as an element powering the economy despite the economic slowdown in Poland and turbulences in the economies of Member States of the European Union. Micro-enterprises have the largest share of enterprises belonging to the SME sector - in Poland, they consist of 95.7% of the market (in the European Union - 92.2%). This sector produces a significant portion of GDP and generates numerous workplaces. Their share in the GDP over 5 years remains at similar level and amounts to 48.5%. However, SMEs are often confronted with market imperfections. They have difficulties in obtaining capital or credit, particularly in the start-up phase of the enterprise. Financial resources are their foundation. What is more, they are the basis for the operation of each enterprise. In Poland, there are various possibilities of obtaining financing sources; however, their variety does not imply that all parties have equal access to these resources. Currently, the most important source of funding, in addition to equity capitals, are bank credits. The aim of this paper is to present a credit offer for enterprises beginning an economic activity by selected institutions of the Polish banking sector.

The focus of this paper is to analyze knowledge sharing processes in small and medium enterprises through a knowledge management perspective in order to further the understanding what tools small and medium enterprises operating in the Polish market use to share knowledge. Modern IT tools are used by only 30% of small and medium enterprises. The most often used tool is email, as confirmed by 88% of respondents. Knowledge sharing processes are vital to knowledge management initiatives of companies that operate in a changing environment and depend on innovation to gain a competitive advantage. Previous research on knowledge management in small and medium enterprises has shown many differences compared to larger firms. SMEs tend to place more emphasis on the management of tacit knowledge than larger firms, and communication channels in SMEs are more likely to be between firms, rather than internal to the organization. Therefore in the following study, a thorough investigation of tools for knowledge sharing is presented. This research attempts to fulfill the knowledge sharing processes gap between small and medium enterprises in the Polish context where traditionally large firms are mainly investigated

The paper is based on the idea that in the contemporary market economy, the market itself is the main regulator of quality. Nevertheless, there are two most important factors – price and service level. The decision of the guest as to the choice of a specific object will depend on these factors. Also, research states, that a very important factor is competition, which constantly forces you to raise the standard. The research clearly shows that a good reputation has become more and more essential. In the context of the hospitality, it could be built on ensuring guest safety, comfort, maintaining a high level of service, good atmosphere and high qualifications of the crew. The author underlines that one of the guiding principles of the tourist and hotel management should be the care for the well-being of the guest. The research highlights five determinants of the quality of services – reliability, speed of service, reliability, and professionalism of service, individual approach to the customer and the specification of the service, determine the overall opinion of guests about the object. Moreover, the paper states that all these elements should be met so that the guest would like to re-use the offer of the enterprise. The research focused on Poland and underlined that small and medium companies have a chance of entering the market because they are just filling the gap in the tourism and hotel industry in the country. Objects of this type are relatively new on the market. The research declares that those who decide to set up and run facilities will succeed.
