Opis:
A construction of a realistic statistical model of lung cancer risk and progression is proposed. The essential elements of the model are genetic and behavioral determinants of susceptibility, progression of the disease from precursor lesions through early (localized) tumors to disseminated disease, detection by various modalities, and medical intervention. Using model estimates as a foundation, mortality reduction caused by early-detection and intervention programs can be predicted under different scenarios. Genetic indicators of susceptibility to lung cancer should be used to define the highest-risk subgroups of the high-risk behavior population (smokers). The calibration and validation of the model requires applying our techniques to a variety of data sets available, including public registry data of the SEER type, data from the NCI lung cancer chest X-ray screening studies, and the recent ELCAP CT-scan screening study.

Opis:
Maritime shipping is a set of complex activities with a large number of actors involved. We focus on a subset of illegal maritime activities, such as armed robberies, maritime piracy or contraband smuggling. To fight against them and minimize their negative impact naval authorities typically introduce a number of countermeasures, such as deployed patrols or surveillance agents. Due to very high costs of countermeasures it is often beneficial to evaluate their impact using a simulation, allowing what-if analysis and evaluation of a range of scenarios before actually deploying the countermeasures. We introduce BANDIT, an agent-based computational platform, which is designed to evaluate scenarios with an accent on the modeling of different types of illegal behavior and on the interaction between agents. The platform consists of an agent behavior modeling system and a multi-agent maritime simulator. The platform allows the definition of a number of scenarios through a simple configuration and it offers the means to run these scenarios in a single or a batch mode and evaluate the results as single or aggregate data sets respectively. We demonstrate the usefulness of the platform on the scenarios of the drug smuggling problem in the seas surrounding Central America. Senario outcomes (e.g., heatmaps of activities, set of trajectories etc.) are subsequently used to help with the design of effective countermeasures, i.e., allocating naval patrols and planning their patrol routes.

This paper examined the numerical simulation of mud filtrate invasion process quantitatively with finite difference scheme that includes the effects of mudcake growth in oil well damage. Most of the existing models are empirical, experimental or rather complex. Efforts have been made to develop the linear flow model involving the modification of Darcy’s equation for determination of mudcake porosity-permeability and thickness through formation pressure near wellbore. The results show the effects of pressure transient on cake buildup over a considerable time intervals. Results also characterized cake parameters and time into low and high permeability zones that are strictly linear with pressure change and supercharging observed during the sensitive formation testing.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose on this article is to study the failure of FDM printed ABS by exhibiting an exhaustive crack growth analysis mainly based on raster angle parameter. Design/methodology/approach: Two approaches have been developed in this study; On one hand, mechanical experiments were carried out to determine the critical stress intensity factor KIC. On the other hand, numerical analysis was used to predict the paths within the part as well as the crack propagation. Findings: This work has clearly shown the effect of raster angle on the damage mechanism of the ABS printed by FDM. Indeed, for the combination 1 (0°/90°), the structure presents an important stiffness and a high degree of stress distribution symmetry with respect to the notch. Moreover, the crack propagation is regular and straight, and the damage surfaces are on the same plane. However, for the combination 2 (-45°/45°), the structure is less resistant with an asymmetrical stress distribution according to two different planes. Research limitations/implications: In order to present an exhaustive study, we focused on the effect of two raster angles (including 0°/90°, -45°/45°) on the ABS crack propagation, additively manufactured. This study is still in progress for other raster angles, and will be developed from a design of experiments (DoE) design that incorporates all relevant factors. To highlight more the cracking mechanisms, microscopic observations will be developed in more depth. Practical implications: Our analysis can be used as a decision aid in the design of FDM parts. Indeed, we can choose the raster angle that would ensure the desired crack propagation resistance for a functional part. Originality/value: In this article, we have analyzed the mechanism of damage and crack propagation. This topic represents a new orientation for many research papers. For our study, we accompanied our experimental approach with an original numerical approach. In this numerical approach, we were able to mesh distinctly raster by raster for all layers.

Opis:
The objective of this work is to gain a deeper understanding of the separation effects and particle movement during filtration of non-metallic inclusions in aluminum casting on a macroscopic level. To understand particle movement, complex simulations are performed using Flow 3D. One focus is the influence of the filter position in the casting system with regard to filtration efficiency. For this purpose, a real filter geometry is scanned with computed tomography (CT) and integrated into the simulation as an STL file. This allows the filtration processes of particles to be represented as realistically as possible. The models provide a look inside the casting system and the flow conditions before, in, and after the filter, which cannot be mapped in real casting tests. In the second part of this work, the casting models used in the simulation are replicated and cast in real casting trials. In order to gain further knowledge about filtration and particle movement, non-metallic particles are added to the melt and then separated by a filter. These particles are then detected in the filter by metallographic analysis. The numerical simulations of particle movement in an aluminum melt during filtration, give predictions in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements.

Opis:
Motivation and social aspects as interaction among teachers and students are essential for a successful learning process in an Open Distance Learning environment, and the goal of this paper is to develop an interactive model to manage motivation between the participants of that process. The article contains the concept of developing a motivation model aimed at supporting activity and cooperation of both the students and the teacher. The structure of the motivation model and formal assumptions are presented. The proposed model constitutes a theoretical formalization of a new situation in which a teacher and the students are obligated to elaborate on a didactic material repository content in accordance with the competence requirements. A mathematical method based on game theory and simulation is suggested. The conditions for applying simulation to the model are analyzed in two simulated cases.

Opis:
Purpose: Development results allow the defects in the boom section of a crop spraying machine design to be found, the most loaded structural components to be determined and the most suitable design parameters to be chosen. Design/methodology/approach: Results of theoretical investigation of internal forces distribution in the components of a boom section of a crop spraying machine in the static statement of the problem have been presented. The applied under discussion enables the static indeterminacy to be realized whilst calculating the complex frame structures though it requires not only considerable records of the function of potential energy of deformation (even without taking into account the function of potential energy of deformation of normal and lateral forces) but application of applied computer programs. The technique of static indeterminacy realization by minimum of potential energy of deformation (MPED) method has been used to calculate the framework. Findings: Technique of static indeterminacy realization by minimum of potential energy of deformation (MPED) method has been used to calculate the framework. The results of theoretical calculation and simulation of the boom section of a crop spraying machine have been compared. The results of analytical calculation have been checked by the simulation of 3D model of the using the program complex «Lira-SAPR», where the finite elements method (FEM) has been implemented. Research limitations/implications: Horizontal components of the shear forces as well as the normal forces and as a consequence the corresponding potential deformation energy are neglected, which has some effect on the accuracy of the calculations. Practical implications: An effective tool for strength analysis with preliminary assessment and diagnostics structures based on the constructed calculation models of stress strain state load-bearing frames of typical geometry with an arbitrarily given distribution of external load. Originality/value: A universal algorithm records of the function of torque and bending moment, as well as the function of potential deformation energy of a spraying machine boom section.

Developing aluminum with good mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, and normal flow stress, Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) method has been suggested as a suitable metal forming process. The load applied and extrusion temperature normally infl uences the flow stress behavior in extruded products and de- termine their mechanical properties. Consequently, how these factors affect mechanical behavior and flow stress of Al 6063 processed by ECAE was examined in this study. Extrusion temperatures were 350°C, 425°C, and 500°C with die angles of 130°, 140°, and 150°. 5 mm/s of ram speed was applied. Each extrudate’s tensile strength and hardness were measured using a Universal Testing Machine and a Rockwell hardness tester. Samples with equal dimensions and properties were also modeled using the Qform software at the extended die angle and temperature for proper analysis of flow stress in the extrudates. According to experimental results, the temperature had a greater effect on the tensile strength and hardness of the billet than the die angle. The extrudates’ grains also became finer as the billet temperature rose. Simulation findings showed that higher billet temperature led to a decrease in the extrudates’ flow stress. The simulation also demonstrated that billet temperature had a greater impact on extrusion load than die angle, with a maximum extrusion load of 5.5 MN being attained at 350 °C.

Opis:
The gripper finger design is a recurring problem in many robotic grasping platforms used in industry. The task of switching the gripper configuration to accommodate for a new batch of objects typically requires engineering expertise, and is a lengthy and costly iterative trial-and-error process. One of the open challenges is the need for the gripper to compensate for uncertainties inherent to the workcell, e.g. due to errors in calibration, inaccurate pose estimation from the vision system, or object deformation. In this paper, we present an analysis of gripper uncertainty compensating capabilities in a sample industrial object grasping scenario for a finger that was designed using an automated simulation-based geometry optimization method (Wolniakowski et al., 2013, 2015). We test the developed gripper with a set of grasps subjected to structured perturbation in a simulation environment and in the real-world setting. We provide a comparison of the data obtained by using both of these approaches. We argue that the strong correspondence observed in results validates the use of dynamic simulation for the gripper finger design and optimization.
