Punktem wyjścia naszej refleksji jest najpierw próba zdefiniowania pojęcia symbolu w oparciu o analizę zakresu jego ewoluowania począwszy od starożytności, aż po czasy współczesne. Następnie przedmiot naszych analiz stanowi wartość poznawcza symboli w religii rozpatrywana z punktu widzenia ich funkcji i znaczenia. W tym kontekście działaniem koniecznym staje się potrzeba weryfikacji przestrzeni relacji między symbolem a językiem religijnym oraz specyfikacja symboli religijnych rozpatrywana pod kątem ich istoty, warstw i nieredukowalności.
The start point of our reflection is an attempt to define the meaning of a symbol. This endeavour is based on the analysis of the spectrum of its evolution, beginning from the ancient times right until the present day. The subsequent subject of our study is the epistemic value of religious symbols looked at in terms of their functions and meanings. In that aspect it is vital to verify the substance of a relationship between the symbol itself and the religious language, as well as to specify the said symbols based upon their essence and irreducible complexity.

Celem niniejszego tekstu jest zaprezentowanie specyficznego spojrzenia na dydaktykę, jej teorie i perspektywy praktyczne. Intencją autora jest ukazanie teoretycznych rozważań, opisujących zagadnienie symbolu w dydaktyce w zakresie zadań edukacyjnych szkoły współczesnej. Realizacja takiego celu wymaga zrekonstruowania podstawowych wyznaczników samego symbolu i jego ontologicznego ujęcia w perspektywie dydaktyki symbolu. Wyrażam przekonanie, że symbol może stać się kategorią humanistycznej teorii kształcenia ogólnego, ukazując jego możliwości realizacyjne.
The purpose of this text is to present a specific view on didactics, its theories and practical perspectives. The author intends to show theoretical considerations describing the issue of the symbol in teaching in the scope of educational tasks in a contemporary school. The implementation of this aim requires the reconstruction of the basic determinants of the symbol itself and its ontological approach to the didactics of the symbol. I am convinced that the symbol can become a category of humanistic theory for general education, showing its implementation capabilities.

This paper attempts to illustrate a process of analysis that will hopefully open a path to more complete and useful definitions of sign and symbol. It applies a form-content analysis to the metaphysical properties of these two concepts. The objective is to locate criteria necessary and sufficient to derive formal definitions for these terms. Wittgenstein’s concept of “forms of representation” is analyzed and applied to the topic. Criteria are outlined that determine the appropriateness of the sign and symbol to be applied as labels. Criteria of definition are then developed using gesture, metaphor, and several other example types to illustrate the use of the criteria in distinguishing between sign and symbol. The structural organization of these two concepts proved to be especially complex and led to what some readers may find somewhat obscure. It is not our intention to be purposefully obscure.

The world today calls a common language as a code to ease communication among different language speakers and almost this language is English which is being taught in four corners of world .For teaching languages there are many barriers of which the most important ones come to the structural and inherent differences, for several years teaching English to Kurd students it has been substantiated that in many cases the Kurd speaker encounters severe problems to understand what differences structural differences among languages exert. Some while these differences block the process of message transfer. Relying on semiotic iconic fragments many of these troublesome obstacles appear to be eliminated thoroughly it seems that there are shortages in quantity of structures to convey a message from a mind to one another: in order to understand what exactly the role of structures are I am going to illustrate the tense FUTURE which splits into (simple, progressive, perfect and perfect continuous in English) which are shown in one form in Kurdish thus a Kurd speaker would confront severe problems to think by those structures and consequently his or her perception of an English speaker using those structures might be challenged. Hence throughout this article it has been substantiated to get the significance of structure acquaintance known and likewise to imply how this trend could fruitfully push the Kurd learners to overwhelm the English structures grabbed and eventually will have them completely interact and interchange messages in English: knowing the structures and senses they have will dramatically enhance Kurd’s perception and uttering quality in English

Over the last few decades, philosopher of art Susanne K. Langer (1895-1985) has gained growing attention for her wide-ranging and innovative philosophy of mind and culture. A central element in this philosophy is her distinction between sign and symbol. In order to understand the way in which Langer draws this distinction it is essential to know her philosophically formative sources: Henry Sheffer, Alfred North Whitehead, Ernst Cassirer and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Having explained this background, I will argue that Langer’s distinction between signs and symbols not only has significant theoretical value but can be used to explain important differences between certain kinds of artistic images. I will illustrate this with a series of murals in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, painted by the Bogside Artists. Unlike Northern Ireland’s standard sectarian murals, the murals of the Bogside Artists do not function as territorial signs or as political message boards but as symbols that are vehicles for conception, reflection and commemoration. It is argued that Langer’s notion of art as a non-discursive, open-ended symbol can contribute to a better understanding of the murals of the Bogside Artists and to an argument for their preservation.

Opis:
In this article, Marta Kotkowska appeals to the category of the iconic turn and appoints insignias of picturebooks of Iwona Chmielewska. The researcher also analyses meanings of the artistic expression which author uses in her books. Relying on this characterization, Marta Kotkowska presents how this “in between” words and images works, and how, almost in the real time, it generates and transform meanings. In the description of the almost indiscernible and elusive relation between the word and the image which constitutes picturebook, the semiotic categories, such as the sign, the symbol and the visual metaphor are used. The editorial deliberations concerning the congeniality of analyzing projects are summing the whole article. They emphasize that Chmielewska creates every book even in the smallest detail and with full consciousness and that both format, cover and paper, and words and images, are significant.

The continuosly transforming contemporary world has altered the process of identity creation. Consequently, the contemporaneous discouse on identity is subject to fundamental metamorphoses. The power of consumption, in its broadest sense, represents one of the major factors that affects the way people conceive an perceive their and others' indentities. Ultimately, the social relations are also functioning differently. The basic purpose of this paper is to understand whether people are losing their identities or whether they are creating new ones. It is an attempt to identtify the positive and/or negative aspects of consumption in the process of identity creation. The paradoxical connection between the contemporaneous discourse on identity and the process of consumption is expressed in Baudrillard's concept of consumption as a system of signs. Baudrillard considers consumers to be “mutually implicated, in a general system of exchange and in the production of coded values.”

Znaki i symbole w przestrzeni miasta są przedmiotem badań kilku dyscyplin naukowych. Za Florianem Znanieckim pragnę przeanalizować przestrzeń miejską z uwzględnieniem „współczynnika humanistycznego”. Nazwy ulic miejskich mają złożoną historię i mogą pełnić wiele funkcji, w tym informacyjną i symboliczną. Kształtowanie się i przeobrażenia nazewnictwa miejskiego analizuję głównie na przykładach nazw w miastach Francji, w Pradze czeskiej oraz we Lwowie i w Warszawie. Pokazuję zmiany w naszych miastach po roku 1989, oszacowując ich zakres. Przedstawiam także wyniki badań polskiej opinii publicznej na temat zmian nazw ulic. Podsumowując – traktuję nazwy jako „barometr” zmian politycznych, „narzędzie” kształtowania tożsamości społecznej i przedmiot sporów.
Signs and symbols of the city are the subject of research. City space is analysed according to the “human factor” of Florian Znaniecki. This article also discusses names in the city, their history and function. It also describes the conflict between information and symbolic functions. The research presented in the text addresses past and present fate and problems of street names in France, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Poland. The Polish public opinion on changes in the names of streets after 1989 is also described in the article.. To summarise, city names are treated by the author as a “barometer” of political changes, a “tool” for creating social identity, and the subject of disputes.

In this text, a semiotic perspective was used to analyze the artistic works of students from Krakow schools submitted to the competition entitled “A multicultural city in the 21st century”. Assuming that the condition for the semiotics of the city are social processes leading to the recognition of objects in urban space as signs, the text is aimed to answer the question: what signs and codes constitute the semiosphere of works taking part in the competition? The analysis shows that the participants creatively used signs rooted in the tradition of Krakow, modifying their meaning by placing them in new syntagmatic systems with signs from other cultural codes. These works also show that the impact of cultural interactions is related to an exchange of signs and the dynamic process of reassigning their meanings. They also illustrate other sociocultural mechanisms taking place in the conditions of multi – and interculturalism. One of them is the simple multiplication of various “cultural packages”, and another – the diverse and dynamic interactions and the interweaving of the multiple elements that make up the entire intercultural space.
W tekście zastosowano perspektywę semiotyczną do analizy prac artystycznych uczniów krakowskich szkół nadesłanych na konkurs pn. „Miasto wielokulturowe w XXI wieku”. Przyjmując założenie, że warunkiem dla semiotyki miasta są społeczne procesy prowadzące do uznania przedmiotów w przestrzeni miejskiej za znaki, tekst ma na celu odpowiedzieć na pytanie: jakie znaki i kody konstytuują semiosferę konkursowych prac? Z analizy wynika, że uczestnicy w twórczy sposób użyli znaków zakorzenionych w tradycji Krakowa, modyfikując ich znaczenie poprzez umieszczenie ich w nowych układach syntagmatycznych ze znakami z innych kodów kulturowych. Prace te ukazują również, że wpływ interakcji kulturowych wiąże się z wzajemną wymianą znaków i dynamicznym procesem ponownego przypisywania im znaczeń. Ilustrują one także inne mechanizmy społeczno-kulturowe zachodzące w warunkach wielokulturowości i międzykulturowości. Jednym z nich jest proste zwielokrotnienie różnorodnych „pakietów kulturowych”, zaś drugim – różnorodne i dynamiczne interakcje oraz przeplatanie się wielości elementów, jakie składają się na całość przestrzeni międzykulturowej.

Przestrzeń jest jak opowieść, która w postaci konkretnych znaków kryje w sobie konkretne treści. Zawarte są one na poziomie informacji, takich jak funkcja oraz na styku metafor i twórczych intencji. Tekst dotyczy kulturowej pamięci znaków i geometrycznej reprezentacji form w przestrzeni. Wskazuje, iż potrzeba geometrycznego zapisu przestrzeni, nie tylko wynika z potrzeby obliczeniowej, ale też jest nośnikiem abstrakcyjnego wyrażania idei dla całych zbiorowości społecznych.
Space is like a story with specific content hidden in specific signs. The signs are information such as functions and combinations of metaphors and creative intentions. The text touches upon the cultural memory of signs and the geometric representation of forms in space. It indicates that the need for a geometric recording of space results not only from the need for computation, but is also a carrier of an abstract expression of ideas for entire social communities.

The  essay  titled  „Pursuing  the  Magic  of  Words  in  the  Twentieth-Century’s  Croatian  and Serbian Literature” discusses transformations of the awareness of the avant-garde and postmodernism  from  the  perspective  of  its  relation  to  magic  thinking.  The  essay  advances a vision of poetic language and the main figures of the avant-garde’s imagination, especially the aesthetic  conceptualizations  of  the  messianic  archetype.  The  avant-garde  thinking about  the world  of  unity  (of  the  world-man-language)  is  utopian  and  not  infrequently magic-esoteric. Postmodernism deconstructs symbolic language; it does not share the avant-garde’s belief in the existential and creative power of imagination and the word. The virtual culture of postmodernism reduces the value of the language sign and the referential function of language; it disenchants the conceits of the magic word.
