Opis:
This article sets out a manifesto for the development of an international values-based practice fully engaged with the diversity of cultural values and implemented through the resources of the international movement in philosophy and psychiatry. Anticipated by mid-twentieth century ordinary language philosophy of the “Oxford School,” the last three decades have witnessed a remarkable flowering of cross-disciplinary work between philosophy and psychiatry. The article indicates the scope and scale of this work and then describes the emergence of contemporary values-based practice as its philosophy-into-practice cutting edge. Values-based practice although originating in philosophy and psychiatry is currently being developed mainly in areas of bodily medicine such as surgery. As such, it has been criticized for focusing, as contemporary health care has largely focused, on the individual at the expense of cultural values. Hence arises the need for extending values-based practice internationally. The resources available from international philosophy and psychiatry for so extending values-based practice are outlined and some of the challenges are indicated. The article concludes with the hope that psychiatry in supporting the development of international values-based practice will by the same token take poll position in the development of contemporary science-led clinical care.

Last time (Journal of the Society, No. 24, 2019, September), I reported on the World Congress of Phi- losophy. This time, I would like to introduce the Biocosmological Association that is also linked to the World Congress of Philosophy and the French Neo-Biophilosophy. The society is chaired by Professor Xiaoting LIU (Beijing Normal University) and publishes the electronic journal Biocosmology-neo- Aristotelism. Meetings are held alternately in Beijing and Europe. The theory of Aristoteles, the an- cestor of all studies, is reconsidered in a modern way and the world and the universe are regarded as the movement and development of organic energy. It is similar to realism of Bergson. Creative papers, Nishida and Tanabe are also actively published with the intention of integrating European and Asian philosophies. The editor-in-chief is Professor Konstantin S. KHROUTSKI (Russia, Novgorod Uni- versity), a philosopher and a doctor. So his territory is wide, the area of the journal is diverse.

This article presents the views of Tadeusz Czeżowski, who was one of the most prominent representatives of the Lviv-Warsaw school. He formulated a number of rules defining the rules of conducting science. His most important conclusion is that also metaphysical theories have a specific logical structure, i.e. they are interpretations of logic, therefore there is nothing to prevent metaphysics from also being considered as a branch of science. According to Czeżowski, there are two types of ethical theories: empirical ethics, and deductive ethics. Czeżowski, however, did not attempt to create his own ethical system.

The paper maintains and reinforces a viewpoint that science and religion (theology) are methodologically and epistemologically independent. However, it also suggests that this independence can be overcome if a “third party” is taken into account, that is – philosophy. Such a possibility seems to follow from the thesis of incommensurability and the thesis of underdetermination formulated and analysed in the current philosophy of science.

The article presents the issue of philosophy and science cultivated by the Polish Jesuit, Fr Wojciech Tylkowski (1624-1695), a polymath viz. scientist of many varied interests. Tylkowski acted primarily as an educator and lecturer in philosophy at schools run by the Jesuit Order. Tylkowski aspired toward mastering all philosophical and natural science known to him. The notion of the complete scholar of the baroque period – the homo universalis  – was a crucial factor in his way of thinking and scientific work. The synthesizing of all knowledge known to him marked the purpose of his writing. For this very reason he also led independent studies, which resulted in his writing activity in the fields of philosophy, theology, astronomy, mathematics, geography, technology, art, and even agriculture. Tylkowski practised philosophy in the spirit of the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition. An important area of his writing initiative is the so-called philosophia curiosa , understood as philosophy that evokes in the mind of the recipient an interest in the world and knowledge of the subject. Tylkowski was an original representative of this style of practising philosophy and science. His books, especially those written in the popularized convention, the philosophia curiosa , were directed towards a wide circle of readers.

This paper sets out as its objective the exploration of some of the key passages and most relevant theoretical plexuses of the Grundzüge des gegenwärtigen Zeitalters (1806) by Johann Gottlieb Fichte devoted to the theme of historical narrative and, more generally, of historiography. In particular, we will first of all aim to show the specific status of Historie. Secondly, we will try to outline the differences that Grundzüge establishes between the functions of Wissenschaftslehrer and those of Historiker, in an attempt to show, at the same time, the nexus linking the two and the activities they perform.

Opis:
The following contribution starts out going through the pages where Hans Georg Gadamer recalls his early youth and his first university studies in Breslavia. In those pages Gadamer emphasizes more than once a particular “foundational” exigence, the need “to throw a bridge”, to articulate in new terms the dialogue between humanistic tradition and positive sciences. That fundamental exigence “to throw a bridge” of a new relationship with scientific knowledge is one of the essential features of contemporary hermeneutics. Italy was the first country to publish the first translation of Gadamer’s main work, Wahrheit und Methode. And in Italy alone, in last year’s philosophical debate around the hermeneutic koiné finds in the relationship with science (natural sciences, scientific knowledge) as it has been interpreted by hermeneutics so far, and in the exigency to finally reformulate that relationship in less “aesthetical-metaphysical” terms, the place where hermeneutics may recognize its own nihilistic sense: to correspond to the becoming (flowing) of nihilism, that is of modernity, means first of all to mark the distance from the attitudes that hermeneutic philosophers have so far had with regard to the positive sciences.

Opis:
This paper reconstructs Max Horkheimer’s views on interrelations between science and religion. It is shown that Horkheimer criticizes both the neopositivistic scientism which renders science the role of monopoly of cognition, and neo-romantic anti-intellectualism which depreciates scientific cognition by removing from it truth. According to Horkheimer, philosophy is not able to substitute science, and it should not be its instrument. He equalizes blind faith in science with blind faith in religion, treating both as equally disastrous for thinking and the development of culture, and, in consequence, for human life. He proclaims himself in favour of the autonomy of philosophical thinking towards all forms of dogmatism. He considers the lack of autonomy in modernity as leading to a cultural crisis. He sees a hope for its weakening in the postulated reform of academic education; he postulates that it should offer not only professional competencies, but also the attitude of mental maturity recommended already by Kant.

The Polish School of Logic flourished in the period 1920-1939. Philosophically, it was influenced by Kazimierz Twardowski, professor at the University of Lwow (now Lviv in Ukraine), who established the Lwow-Warsaw School, to which the mentioned logical group belonged. Twardowski claimed that logic is very important in every kind of human activity, professional as well as private. Hence, every argument should be clearly formulated and proceed by correct inferential rules. These postulates involved semiotics, formal logic, and methodology of science — that is, logica sensu largo. This position was accepted by Twardowski’s most distinguished students, such as Jan Łukasiewicz, Stanisław Leśniewski, Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz, and Tadeusz Kotarbiński, who graduated before 1914, as well as the next generation of logicians and philosophers, particularly by Alfred Tarski. Although all these people considered logic, philosophy, and science as completely neutral with respect to politics and ideology, they treated logical skills as indispensable in political activities. In philosophical specialized terminology, Polish logicians regarded logic as a weapon against irrationalism. This position was also represented by Polish logicians who did not belong to the group of Twardowski’s students.

This contribution examines the effects that a philosophical consideration of nothing has on the debate between theism and atheism. In particular, it argues that surprising conclusions that arise from a close analysis of the concept of nothing result in three claims that have relevance for that debate. Firstly, that on the most plausible demarcation criterion for science, science is constitutionally unable to show theism to be a redundant hypothesis; the debate must take place at the level of metaphysics. Secondly, that on that level, an increasingly popular atheistic response to the question “Why is there something rather than nothing” commits one to rejection of the presumption of atheism. Thirdly, the presumption of atheism is in any case unsupported. The arguments for these claims are only sketches, with the hope for further development in future.

The response to the special 2019 issue of Studia Gilsoniana on economics was so posi-tive that it led to the creation of the Aquinas School of Leadership School of Economics (ASLSE). This 2021 publication is, therefore, a second special issue of Studia Gilsonia-na on the same theme and the second installment of ASLSE’s economic journals. We are delighted to present here further fruits of thought from the maturing Studia Gilsonia-na and ASLSE partnership. Economics is held to be a value-free, scientific enterprise, and as such there can be no relationship between economics and religion. Ayn Rand, a well-known novelist-turned-philosopher, took this position in an unapologetic way in her writings, specifi-cally in her novel Atlas Shrugged. The contrary position to what we might call the Randian “strict separation” thesis holds that economics and religion are related, in some way and to some degree, and therefore should be considered in tandem. The pa-pers in this special edition of Studia Gilsoniana set out to show the extent and quality of the relationship between economics and religion from a variety of viewpoints and his-torical periods.

The purpose of this paper is the presentation of Stanislaw Kaminski’s con-cept of theology as a type of scientific knowledge. In the first part the author discusses the relationship between theology and philosophy and in the second one describes theology as a science. Kaminski strongly emphasizes the rela-tionships between theology and philosophy. Their basis is not only the man whose thinking seems to be imbued with a certain philosophy, but also a meta-physical moment of every religion and similar object of both branches. They had the form of antagonism or subsidiarity. They are complicated at the mo-ment of departure in theology from classical philosophy to contemporary trends, which are not always compatible with it. In Kaminski’s opinion theolo-gy must use the achievements of philosophy (especially its conceptual appa-ratus and methods), but can not be mixed or reduced. Kaminski states clearly that theology is a distinct type of scientific knowledge. Its specificity lies in the use of the supernatural sources. He also clearly defines the object of theology – it is not God, because there is no possibility of direct recognition of any super-natural being in science, but rather empirically perceptible religious event (Christian) in all its aspects (historical and cultural, natural and supernatural). The subject determines also the method, which is not homogeneous. The theo-logians use a variety of methods, drawn from the philosophical sciences, hu-manities and social sciences.

In the article, the author presents certain aspects concerning the constitution of science as a distinct domain of culture. Although civilizations antedating Greek civilization had many important achievements that today we would call scientific, science itself as having a definite object, method and aim appeared first in Greece. In Babylon and Egypt science had purely practical aims, such as counting and astrology. Among the Greeks, science possessed a theoretical dimension. The Greek concept of THEORIA signified science as well as the highest type of life man could achieve, the BIOS THEORETIKOS. Human knowledge progresses through stages. It passes through a phase where it has much in common with the knowledge possessed by brute animals, based on sensation and memory. At a later and higher phase, human knowledge is characterized by a more comprehensive experience than mere memory of facts, then by art, and finally by science, the crowning point of which is wisdom (philosophy).
