    In view of the crucial role, railways have played historically inland transportation, the West African region still endure to provide an efficient transport system. While road transport has been almost the exclusive predominant transportation mode in the region, the railway is now showing a global comeback. In the absence of a new phase of modernization at the international standard, it is unavoidable that the high demand for mobility of its increasing population and the full exploitation of its natural resource endowment will be constrained. This study presents the past, present, and future developments of the railway sector. The first section includes the brief historical development of the railways, the determinants choices of their location, and the influential parameters for their construction. The second section deals with the present state of the railway infrastructure, operational performance, and railway sector institutions. The last section provides some recent investment in the key construction projects at a national level.

    The paper aims to present the conditions of transportation of technical gases produced by Messer company. The company has been in Poland since 1999 and has a growing share in gas market. The economic and financial results as well as the good cooperation with the Polish and German road transport companies makes the future of the company look bright.

    W artykule przedstawiono unijne i narodowe prognozy przewozowe ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem samochodowego transportu ciężarowego. Poruszono kwestię zmian popytu na przewozy transportem lądowym w różnych regionach świata, na obszarze Unii Europejskiej oraz w niektórych krajach unijnych takich jak: Francja, Niemcy, Belgia i Holandia. Opisano również prognozy pracy przewozowej towarowego transportu lądowego w perspektywie roku 2030 i roku 2050 w Polsce. W dziedzinie prognoz dotyczących polskiego transportu towarowego oparto się o źródła polskie, niemieckie oraz pochodzące z Komisji Europejskiej.
    The article presents the EU’s and national transport forecasts, with particular emphasis on freight road transport. The issue of changes in demand for the land transport in various regions of the world, in the European Union and in some EU countries, such as: France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, was discussed. The forecasts of the haulage transport of freight land transport till 2030 and 2050 in Poland, were also described. In the field of Polish freight transport forecasts, the authors used Polish, German and European sources.

    In the article are characterized two network methods (critical path method – CPM and program evaluation and review technique – PERT). On the example of an international furniture company’s product, it presented the exemplification of methods to transport cargos (furniture elements). Moreover, the study showed diagrams for transportation of cargos from individual components’ producers to the final destination – the showroom. Calculations were based on the trans- portation of furniture elements via small commercial vehicles.
    Scharakteryzowano dwie metody sieciowe (metoda ścieżki krytycznej – CPM; metoda programowania etapów i rewizja terminów – PERT). Na przykładzie produktu międzynarodowej firmy meblowej dokonano egzemplifikacji przedstawionych metod do transportu ładunków (elementów meblowych). Przedstawiono schematy transportu ładunków od poszczególnych wytwórców podzespołów do miejsca końcowego - salonu sprzedaży. W obliczeniach założono transport elementów meblowych małymi samochodami dostawczymi.

    Transport safety can be defined in a number of ways, including the official World Health Organisation (WHO) safety definition ‘freedom from unacceptable risk of harm’. Road safety is, however, usually defined in a negative way. Safe road traffic is characterised by the absence of crashes, injuries and fatalities. Crashes are used here instead of accidents because the word accident leads thoughts in the direction of an event that is hard to do something about ľ “it happened by accident”. For society and for the individual, the loss of health is the most serious effect of crashes. It leads both to serious personal suffering and to huge societal losses in monetary terms. Therefore, it is essential to state at this early stage that loss of health is the main road safety criterion. Convalescence and health restoration have economic consequences as have vehicle damage and loss of vehicles and goods.

    W artykule zawarto prezentację przemian w sektorze autobusowych usług transportowych poza obszarami miejskimi w latach 1990-2013 oraz przedstawiono ocenę wpływu licznych zmian ustawowych na funkcjonowanie tego sektora. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań ankietowych wśród menedżerów przedsiębiorstw PKS omówiono problemy wdrażania rozporządzenia UE nr 1370/2007 w regionalnej komunikacji autobusowej. W końcowej części artykułu przedstawiono propozycje rozwiązań niezbędnych do wprowadzenia w sektorze transportu autobusowego i wskazano na perspektywy tej branży.
    The article includes the presentation of changes in the bus transport services outside urban areas in the years 1990-2013 and presents an assessment of the impact of the numerous changes in the law on the functioning of the sector. On the basis of surveys conducted among managers of the PKS enterprises (car transport companies) it discusses the issues of the implementation of the EU Regulation 1370/2007 on regional bus services. In its final part the paper presents the proposals of the solutions necessary to be implemented in the bus transport sector and indicates the prospects of the industry.

    In general, transport companies have an unimportant role in the business market, in order to achieve the required sales and the related profit. Competition in road transport is great and enforcement from a large number of carriers is considerable. It is the price for the transport of goods that plays the most important role how to get the carrier and the customer who wants the lowest transport price. On the contrary, the carrier would like to get the highest amount for the shipment. A compromise between these two requirements should form the required shipping price. Pricing involves a factor other than costs, the attractiveness of the transport destination, in terms of the possibility of return utilization the vehicle. The aim of the paper is to verify the hypothesis, that the cost of transport is affected not only by the carrier's costs, but also the target destination of the ordered shipment.

    W artykule omówiono problem tzw. efektu skali w transporcie, zwłaszcza w transporcie drogowym. W praktyce jest wiele czynników, wpływających na efektywność tej gałęzi gospodarki. W większości są to czynniki zewnętrzne, niezależne od przedsiębiorstw transportowych. Ich udział jest szczególnie wysoki w sektorze drogowym. Co więcej, bardzo trudno uzyskać korzyści skali z powodu ograniczonej ładowności pojazdów. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie praktycznych determinant efektywności ekonomicznej transportu drogowego oraz czynników umożliwiających osiąganie korzyści skali.
    The paper discusses the problem of the so called “scale effect” in transport, especially in the road transport. In practice the are many factors, which influence the effectiveness in this branch of the economy. Mostly these are external factors independent of transport enterprises. The share of such factors is especially high in the road sector. What’s more it is very difficult here to obtain the benefits of scale due to the limited load capacity. The goal of the paper is to present practical determinants of the economical effectiveness of the road transport and factors enabling the obtaining scale effects.

    W artykule omówione zostały problemy transportowe w obrębie aglomeracji szczecińskiej. Dokonano analizy stanu istniejącego oraz zaproponowano rozwiązania problemów transportu towarowego na przykładzie istniejącej sieci logistycznej. Proponowana metoda polega na odciążeniu transportu drogowego przy wykorzystaniu istniejącej infrastruktury transportu kolejowego, a także przeanalizowanie jaki będzie to miało wpływ na koszty bezpośrednie oraz koszty zewnętrzne dla tych dwóch gałęzi transportu. W analizie wykorzystano metodę najkrótszej ścieżki do rozwiązania problemu komiwojażera. Metoda ta rozwiązuje graf hamiltonowski w poszukiwaniu minimalnej odległości pomiędzy wszystkimi badanymi punktami i wyznacza najkrótszą ścieżkę pomiędzy nimi.
    The article presents transport problems within the Szczecin area and analysis of the existing situation. The main goal is to propose solutions of the freight transport using the existing logistics network. The aim is to relieve part of road transport and move it to the rail using existing infrastructure. Results will be used to examine the impact on external costs. The analysis uses the method of shortest path to solve the traveling salesman problem. This method resolves the Hamiltonian graph to search of the minimum distance between all test points and determines the shortest path between them.

    Opis:
    Transport telematics (ITS - Inteligent Transport Systems) deals with application of information and communication technologies with the aim of enhancing traffic performance, economies, efficiency, safety, ecology and comfort of transport. ITS basic functions applicable to all modes of transport include a.o. traffic control and management, intelligent vehicles, electronic fee collection, management of rescue systems, management of public mass transportation, route planning, provisioning of traffic information, fleet management and logistics of freight transport. Developing the tradition of science, research and the existing industrial basis, the Czech transport telematics sector is one of those most advanced in Europe. Nevertheless, the present scope of ITS implementation in the Czech Republic is relatively low, and the social climate and regulatory environment related to ITS aren´t at a sufficient high level either. Therefore, the Association for Transport Telematics (SDT, ITS&S) is coming up with an initiative called ITS 2020 Vision, trying to formulate crucial directions of development and implementation of transport telematics in the Czech Republic until 2020, identify the main obstacles to the development and propose the methods of how to remove them.

    W artykule przedstawiono problematykę planowania przewozów międzynarodowych. Przeanalizowano wpływ czasu oczekiwania na przejściach granicznych na czas oraz koszt przewozu. Przedstawiono zastosowaną metodę prognozowania czasu oczekiwania na przejściu granicznym. Przedstawiono autorską metodę planowania przewozów międzynarodowych transportem drogowym z uwzględnieniem czasu oczekiwania na przejściach granicznych. Sformułowano dwa zadania optymalizacyjne planowania przewozów oraz przedstawiono wyniki weryfikacji.
    The article presents the problems of international transport planning. The impact of waiting time to cross the border on time and cost of transport is analyzed. The method of forecasting the waiting time to cross the border is presented. The author presents the method of planning international road transportation with the consideration of waiting time at border. Two optimization tasks are formulated and the results of the verification are presented.

    W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań kordonowych, przeprowadzonych na 23 wlotach do Warszawy w październiku 2010 roku w ramach jednej z części projektu systemowego „Trendy rozwojowe Mazowsza”. Projekt był realizowany w Instytucie Geografii i Przestrzennego Zagospodarowania PAN na zamówienie Mazowieckiego Biura Planowania Regionalnego oraz władz samorządowych województwa. Badania były związane z potrzebą kompleksowego zdiagnozowania sytuacji społeczno-ekonomicznej regionu mazowieckiego, w tym rozpoznania powiązań funkcjonalnych i komunikacyjnych. W tym celu zebrano informacje na temat natężenia ruchu pojazdów samochodowych, wjeżdżających do Warszawy w godzinach 6.00–11.00 oraz skrótów literowych z tablic rejestracyjnych. Na tej podstawie wyznaczono kierunki dojazdów, strukturę pojazdów w ruchu oraz zasięg oddziaływania Warszawy. W szczególności stwierdzono, że przyjazdy do Warszawy w okresie porannym w godzinach 6.00–11.00 na głównych 21 wlotach obejmują 124 tysiące pojazdów silnikowych i około 187 tysięcy osób, przy czym dominują samochody osobowe (84%). Z powiatów graniczących ze stolicą pochodziło 37% ruchu, z województwa mazowieckiego (bez Warszawy) – 53%, a z samej Warszawy – 32%. Szczególnie charakterystyczne jest wysokie natężenie przyjazdów z kierunku wschodniego, świadczące nie tylko o atrakcyjności Warszawy, ale także braku alternatywnych miejsc pracy i swoistym uzależnieniu od stolicy kraju. Wyniki badań wskazują, że większość ruchu wjazdowego pochodzi z powiatów okalających Warszawę, a zasięg oddziaływania jest zgodny z modelem grawitacyjnym. Badania wskazują też na rosnącą rolę dojazdów do pracy i usług ze strefy podmiejskiej, związaną z procesami dekoncentracji osadniczej i żywiołowej suburbanizacji. Ocenia się, że jest to zagrożeniem dla ładu przestrzennego w wymiarze transportowo-osadniczym.
    This paper presents the results of cordon analysis conducted on 23 inlets to Warsaw in October 2010, as part of the project “Development Trends of Mazovia Region”. The project was carried out at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization, Polish Academy of Sciences on request of the Mazovia Office for Regional Planning and local authorities. The research was related to the need of a comprehensive socio-economic diagnosis of Mazovia region, including identification of functional and transport relationships. For this purpose, information on the traffic of vehicles, entering Warsaw between 6 and 11 a.m. was collected based on the acronyms of license plates. The directions of commuting, the structure of vehicles and the spatial impact of Warsaw were evaluated. The results show that most of the traffic comes from the counties surrounding Warsaw and a range of the capital influence is consistent with the gravity model. Research also indicates the growing importance of commuting from the suburban area, linked to the settlement deconcentration and rapid suburbanization. It is assumed that it is a threat to the spatial order in the transport-settlement dimension.

    The results of this study on the loss of live poultry at various stages of delivery from the farm to the processing plant by road are given. A factor analysis of the reasons for the loss of livestock delivered from the farm to the processing plant was carried out. The dependencies of livestock losses on loading delays and the duration of the movement of the loaded poultry farm to the processing plant were established. Methodological recommendations for rationing the number of injuries observed during delivery were developed. The study of losses of live birds during delivery to the processing plant from the density of stocking in shipping boxes was carried out; the economic and mathematical model for optimizing the landing of live birds in shipping boxes was proposed. The calculation of the economic impact of the implementation of the results of the study is given.
