The aim of the article is to present elaborated risk management model in project management of e-learning courses development and implementation. Showed model of risk management is a part of a complex, integrated model for e-learning projects' processes management. The starting point of the article is an analysis of the current state of scientific literature in the field of project management for e-learning courses with a thesis that there are no suitable models adapted to the specifics of e-learning. For the thesis confirmation a case studies of four e-learning institutions with significant experience in e-learning field is being shown. Developed risk management model is presented in the third part of the article. It starts from showing elaborated general processes map, with integrated risk management. Finally detailed risk management models for distinguished processes are being presented. The article is based on case studies of European institutions with significant e-learning projects realization experience, like: Oncampus, Lübeck University of Applied Science from Germany; Distance Education Centre, Kaunas University of Technology from Lithuania; Center of Distance Education Development, Higher Banking School and Educational Portal of University of Gdansk, University of Gdansk. It also includes author's six years’ experience gained by participation in e-learning projects, like international Baltic Sea Virtual Campus and national POKL as courses’ author, instructional designer and it coordinator.

Bez względu na rodzaj projektów, ryzyko jest nieodłącznym czynnikiem ich realizacji. W artykule przedstawiono doświadczenia z obszaru zarządzania ryzykiem projektu edukacyjnego realizowanego na uczelni wyższej, dofinansowanego z funduszy zewnętrznych. Szczególne znaczenie w realizacji projektu miało ryzyko zewnętrzne, do którego zaliczono pandemię koronawirusa.
In the conditions of the growing importance of knowledge in the functioning of many organizations, a university is becoming an active participant in social and economic life. Among the different projects implemented by universities, educational and R&D ones play a significant role. Regardless of the type of projects, risk is an inherent factor in their implementation. The article presents the experience in the area of risk management in an educational project implemented at a university co-financed from the sources of the National Bank of Poland. The external risk, including the coronavirus pandemic, was of particular importance in the implementation of the project.

Agile methods for project management are often treated as methods for mitigating risk. However, there is disagreement as to whether explicit methods of risk management should be used in projects which are executed according to Agile methodology or is the implicit risk management built into Agile methodologies sufficient. To contribute to the discussion, an attempt has been made to identify risks that are either caused by the introduction of an Agile methodology to a project or become more significant when such methodology is in use. If such risks exist, this would be evidence that explicit risk management is required, even in the case of Agile methodologies. The results of this research may be useful for any organization that is in the process of selecting a methodology for project management and is considering Agile methodologies.

Successful management of an information technology (IT) project is the most desirable for all organisations and stakeholders. Many researchers elaborated that risk management is a key part of project management for any project size. Risk management is so critical because it provides project managers with a forward-looking view of both threats and opportunities to improve the project success. The objectives of this research are to explore organisational factors affecting IT project success and risk management practices influencing IT project success. Risk management practices include risk identification, risk analysis, risk response planning, and risk monitoring and control. The IT project success is measured by proces performance and product performance. Data are collected from 200 project managers, IT managers, and IT analysts in IT firms through questionnaires and analysed using Independent Sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Multiple Linear Regression at the statistical significance level of 0.05. The results show that the differences in organisational types affect IT project success in all aspects, while the differences on organisational sizes affect IT project success in the aspect of product performance and total aspects. Risk identification and risk response planning influence the process performance and the total aspects of IT project success. Risk identification has the highest positive influence on product performance, followed closely by risk response, while risk analysis negatively influences product performance.

The presented paper is an attempt to evaluate the application of different buffer sizing methods (within the critical chain approach) to a real-life project, in order to show that it is important to choose consciously one of the existing methods. The implementation of the different approaches to the buffer sizing procedure resulted in eight unique schedules. Once all the methods were implemented, the authors of this paper stumbled upon 2 inconveniences (slack vs. buffer, splitting up buffers). Funding solution for these handicaps caused obtaining eight more schedules. In order to evaluate all the determined solutions, the authors decided to establish a simulation study. A random dataset was generated of 2000 observations using the mean and variance calculated for the probability distribution determined by three possible durations (optimistic, expected and pessimistic) given by the project team members. To validate the performance of different methods, two penalty systems were designed. The test results indicate which specific buffer sizing technique performs best in the presented case, taking into account the attitude of the decision maker. The simulation study is the proposal of a method to be applied in each case of the critical chain method application, because it makes the use of the critical chain method more effective.

An investment project as an undertaking for the future, more or less foreseeable, is a priori encumbered with the possibility of occurrence of disturbances. In recent years there have appeared significant changes in the scope of execution of construction projects, connected with the investment execution time, manner of financing, investors, and the environment in which the given project is executed. That fact determines the need, or even the necessity, to conduct the research into the issues of risk assessment and its utilitarian aspects. That problem applies also to construction projects, including water supply and sewage projects. An example of the project with all kinds of threats characteristic of such types of investments is the project entitled “Complex protection of the underground waters in the Kielce agglomeration.” The risk factors result from the complexity and specificity of that type of projects. The presented article is an introduction to the discussion on the issues of assessing the risk of execution of water supply and sewage projects. The intention of the authors was to present the specificity of that type of projects and the general identification of the risk factors accompanying them.

This comparative study examines the moderating role of risk management in project planning and project success in the construction business of the UK and Pakistan. The data was gathered from 152 project managers (76 from both economies each) using a survey questionnaire. The purposive sampling technique was used to ensure fair representation of sample size and the RAND formula was used to select the project managers. For quantitative analysis, partial least square structural equation modelling technique was utilised. The results confirmed that project planning had a statistically significant impact on project success. Furthermore, risk management significantly moderated the relationship between project planning and project success in the construction businesses despite being in two different economies. The paper contributes to the enhancement of the body of knowledge intended for global companies and academicians aiming to implement risk management frameworks to enhance project success and ensure the effectiveness of project planning in a competitive business environment. It offers a new perspective to investigate the relationship between project planning and project success through moderating the effect of risk management, which is a new theoretical dimension for construction business and the field of project management. It is proposed to the governments and construction businesses operating in the UK and Pakistan to validate the empirical research framework in the cross-cultural context while assessing risk and uncertainty. It helps the construction business in the evaluation of risk while planning and successfully implementing project strategies.

This paper focuses on the analysis of selected risks as part of investments in the power engineering at the initial (tender) stage of the life cycle in the context of the method of project management by the Contractor. The study was carried out on the basis of an analysis of over 500 tenders in the power engineering, from the last 5 years, taking into account future forecast data. The analysis carried out in this article was aimed at achieving specific and unique goals and results aimed at creating a useful product, which is the Contractor’s offer in the power engineering, taking into account the most significant risks. The result of this article is to support the project team in implementing risk management in the project at the tender stage. For this purpose, the risks with their basic parameters were defined, which allowed for the development of a risk matrix taking into account the data obtained in the tender procedures of leading electric power distributors. Based on the proposed risk quantification criteria, a list of remedial actions was prepared for all risk types listed in this article. In addition, the aspects of possible elimination/reduction of the impact of the most significant risks that occur at the analyzed stage of the investment life cycle were developed.

The construction phase of oil and gas projects (OGPs) is a risky process and project managers face numerous challenges during this particular period. A proper risk analysis and management during the construction phase of the OGPs not only will affect the timely and successful operation of the project as a whole, it can also affect occurrence of risks in subsequent phases and overall economic viability of the project. As a result, via using extensive literature review, this study tries to answer the question of what are main risks involved in construction phase of OGPs and which methods are used for identifying them? The outcome of this research would likely be a valuable source for construction professionals to improve project performance while managing existing risks. It is also useful to avoid common problems that befall many project managers and will assist them to have a better understanding of risk management as part of a project plan.

Introduction/background: Despite the existence of many standards, guidelines and methods for risk management in manufacturing companies, it is still an issue that is often overlooked in management practice. This is due to the natural reluctance of managers to deal with risks related to ongoing projects and processes, which additionally require additional organisational effort and the use of various inputs. This paper presents the problem of risk management in projects implemented in a selected automotive company. Aim of the paper: The main aim of the paper was to develop and implement a risk management model for the project management process, which includes stages such as: identification of risk factors in ongoing projects, risk analysis and evaluation, and development of risk response methods. Materials and methods: In the research part, heuristic and statistical methods (group, ocean of experts) were used to identify key project risks. In addition, a qualitative method such as a risk matrix was used to analyse and evaluate risks. An element of the risk management model of options in response to risk was also identified. Results and conclusions: This paper presents how to determine the key risk factors in projects and how to use them in a risk management model for projects in the selected company. The model can be used for risk management in projects in other companies.

The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of technical debt on projects goals achievement, considered from the perspective of software developing teams. The investigations are addressed to technical debt accumulation, difficulties related to its service and repaying. The most important stakeholders are identified on which the dechnical debt has an impact or which influence the technical debt accumulation. An interesting issue was to look at the debt from the inside in order to obtain views of members of the software developing teams. In order to obtain all the necessary information, a survey is conducted referred to the members of the software developing teams. The responses obtained from the survey concerns types of technical debt encountered, attitude, knowledge and approach to the debt. The article also shows that the lack of knowledge and awareness related to technical debt in teams affects the technical debt growth. The paper provides, based on SWOT analysis, solutions proposals that are designed to prevent dangerous situations resulting from technical debt.

Opracowanie związane jest z zarządzaniem ryzykiem w analizie wykonalności nowych projektów. Założeniem artykułu jest zaproponowanie koopetycji w celu minimalizacji ryzyka. Podczas badań 219 przedsięwzięć zanotowano 74% projektów zakończonych niezgodnie z wymaganiami, czego powodem były ograniczenia w zasobach ludzkich, technologii i procesach. Przedsiębiorstwa podejmują się realizacji projektów pomimo danych ograniczeń, które znacząco zwiększają poziom ryzyka. Jedną z proponowanych na tym etapie alternatyw jest koopetycja, jako współpraca i konkurowanie w tym samym czasie z jednostkami zewnętrznymi. Efektem danej współpracy było m.in. obniżenie bardzo wysokiego poziomu ryzyka przekroczenia terminów w 40 projektach o 45%. Koopetycja jest ryzykowną grą, jednocześnie zapewnia dodatkowe zasoby, wsparcie i zmniejsza możliwość wystąpienia zagrożeń.
The elaboration is related to the risk management in the feasibility study of the new projects. The article aim is to propose the coopetition as a purpose of minimizing the risk. During the study of 219 projects, recorded that 74% of them had not been finished in accordance with requirements, and the reasons there were human resources, technology and processes limitations. Companies undertake to perform projects despite the limitations mentioned above, which significantly increase the level of the risk. One of the proposed alternatives on this stage is coopetition, as a cooperation and competing at the same time with outside units. The result of such collaboration was, among others, reducing the very high risk level of exceeding deadlines in 40 projects by 45%. Coopetition is a risky game, on the other hand it provides resources, support and it minimize the possibility of potential threats.
