The aim of the article is to analyse various contexts of passion perceived as an important com- ponent of researcher’s identity. First, passion is confronted with the concept if rationality which dominates the university thinking about research. Second, passion is considered in relations to in- trinsic and extrinsic motivation. Next, the author concentrates attention on factors which limit the passion development: present commercialization of research as well as their permanent indexation and evaluation, re-locating the researcher’s energy on permanent reporting and detailed juridization of academic reality. At the end the possibility of passion in contemporary research is optimistically confirmed by the idea of academic community and academic freedom.

The Polish University Abroad (PUNO) carried out a research aimed at analysis of the approach of young Polish immigrants living in the UK to the independence issues. The point was to identify the way people perceive the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. 191 people were surveyed – 62% of them were women and 38% were men. The majority of respondents were from 26 to 39 years old. Poland, to the respondents, seems to be related to: family, homeland and home. The image of Polish diaspora in the UK provides a lot of inspiration for further research about Poles and their attitude to most important national traditions.

This article focuses on one of the marketing mix elements – promotion (Kotler, 2012), and more specifically – the promotion of an educational institution and its impact on the functioning of a university. It examines the importance of promotional activities in making decisions concerning the selection and evaluation of higher education institution. It happens that improper promotion (including advertising) generates problems with the functioning in the education market. This is particularly important in times of demographic decline and decreasing number of potential students and the fact that every year there are approx. 20 thousand less secondary schools’ graduates. Due to the above mentioned demographic decline, which has affected recruitment in these institutions for several years, advertising is an important support, regardless of the cost, as university authorities seem well aware of the simple relationship: fewer students – fewer universities (especially those non-public ones). There are used different forms of promotion, mainly: information note, press release, poster, flyer, advertising stands at the education fair, tuition discounts, scholarships, gadgets (pens, shirts, caps and pendants).
W niniejszym artykule szczególnym rozważaniom i badaniom został poddany jeden z elementów marketing miksu – promocja (Kotler, 2012), a dokładniej – promocja placówki edukacyjnej i jej wpływ na funkcjonowanie uczelni wyższej. Zbadano znaczenie działań promocyjnych w podejmowaniu decyzji dotyczących wyboru i oceny uczelni wyższej. Zdarza się, że efektem niewłaściwej, nietrafionej promocji, np. reklamy, są problemy uczelni z funkcjonowaniem (istnieniem) na rynku edukacyjnym. Jest to szczególnie istotne w dobie niżu demograficznego i zmniejszającej się liczby potencjalnych studentów oraz faktu, że co roku ok. 20 tys. uczniów mniej kończy szkoły ponadgimnazjalne (szerzej Antczak, 2011). Ze względu na wspomniany niż demograficzny, który już od kilku lat wpływa na rekrutację w tych placówkach, ważnym wsparciem jest właśnie reklama, nawet często bez względu na koszty, gdyż kierujący zdają sobie doskonale sprawę z prostej zależności: mniej uczniów – mniej szkół (dotyczy to głównie szkół ponadgimnazjalnych i wyższych – niepublicznych). Stosowane są więc różne formy promocji, głównie: notka w informatorze, komunikat prasowy, plakat, ulotka, stoisko reklamowe na targach edukacyjnych, zniżki czesnego, stypendia, gadżety reklamowe (długopisy, koszulki, czapeczki, breloczki itp.).

Academic ethos is a set of norms that are binding for a scholar as such. (1) A scholar should especially take up useful research, do it guardedly (so without infringing higher values), formulating well asked questions, using effective methods of searching for true and sufficiently justified answers to those questions — and expressing the research results in an exact, adjusted to the object of the research, simple, forcible, concise and beautiful language. (2) A scholar should undertake vital, i.e. new, fundamental, creative and difficult research. (3) Conducting research should be accompanied by passion, concentration, reliability, imagination, and self-criticism. (4) A scholar should be a guide, minder and supervisor for his pupils and co-workers. (5) A Catholic scholar should also be expected to behave in a morally impeccable way, and if he does not meet this expectation, at least he should feel ashamed of it.

This article presents the results of the research and an in-depth analysis of the survey on the students’ opinions of the University of Euroregional Economics about the university, preferred communication modes and promotional activities directed at increasing interest in the university. Due to the lack of information on how students perceive the university, it was important to first investigate this issue. An important element was also learning what kind of contacts with the university are most effective. Another very important aspect of the questionnaire was to examine the students’ opinions on building the image of the university and the promotion tools used so far. One of the key issues raised in the questionnaire was the question about activities the university should undertake to increase the number of candidates. An important element was also to learn about the most effective way of presenting the educational offer of the university and the ways of its popularization.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań i pogłębioną analizę ankiety na temat opinii studentów Wyższej Szkoły Gospodarki Euroregionalnej o uczelni, preferowanej komunikacji z uczelnią oraz działań promocyjnych skierowanych na zewnątrz w celu zwiększenia zainteresowania uczelnią. Ze względu na brak dużej ilości informacji na temat tego, jak studenci postrzegają uczelnię, w pierwszej kolejności istotne było zbadanie tej kwestii. Ważnym elementem z tym związanym było także poznanie, jakiego rodzaju kontakty z uczelnią są najbardziej skuteczne. Drugim bardzo ważnym aspektem ankiety okazało się zbadanie opinii studentów dotyczącej budowania wizeruneku uczelni oraz stosowanej do tej pory promocji (Kotler, 2012). Jednym z zasadniczych zagadnień poruszonych w ankiecie było pytanie dotyczące działań, jakie miałaby podjąć uczelnia, aby zwiększyć liczbę osób zainteresowanych podjęciem studiów w uczelni. Ważnym elementem było też poznanie najskuteczniejszego sposobu przedstawienia oferty edukacyjnej uczelni, a także jej popularyzacja (Antczak, 2011).

W ciągu 111 lat istnienia Politechniki Gdańskiej można wyróżnić kilka okresów jej funkcjonowania: pod panowaniem pruskim, Wolnego Miasta Gdańsk, PRL-u i okres RP. W czasie swojego istnienia uczelnia powiększyła wielokrotnie liczbę studentów i pracowników naukowo-dydaktycznych, poszerzyła kierunki badań. W ciągu całego okresu jej istnienia mury uczelni opuściło ponad 110 tysięcy absolwentów. Transport to jedna ze specjalności, która w różnym zakresie istnieje na Politechnice Gdańskiej od jej początku. W artykule przedstawiono krótką historię istnienia Politechniki Gdańskiej, zarys działalności naukowo-badawczej w dziedzinie transportu oraz charakterystykę kształcenia na kierunku Transport na Politechnice Gdańskiej.
Over 111 years of existence the Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT) can be divided into three periods of its operation: the period under Prussian rule, the period of the Free City of Danzig and the period of the Republic of Poland. During its existence the number of students and academic teaching and research staff has grown many times as well as scope of researches has been expanded. During the whole period of its existence more than 110 thousand alumnus have graduated from the University. The Transport department is one of the specialties that has been existing at the GUT from the beginning. The article presents brief history of the Gdańsk University of Technology, the outline of scientific researches in the field of Transport and characteristics of education at this department.

Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród 1173 studentów pierwszego roku czterech państwowych i jednego prywatnego uniwersytetu w Kenii. Celem badań była analiza poziomu percepcji sensu życia w okresie rozpoczęcia studiów uniwersyteckich (I rok), z uwzględnieniem trzech trybów dostępu obecnych w Kenii: studenci wspierani przez program państwowy (JAB), studenci częściowo finansujący swoje studia (SSP) oraz studenci uczelni prywatnych (PU). W badaniach użyto dwóch testów (PIL i SONG), mierzących percepcję egzystencjalną i sens/znaczenie życia, mających swoje podłoże teoretyczne w teorii V. E. Frankla. Studenci z programu JAB wykazali wyższy poziom percepcji celu/sensu życia od studentów objętych pozostałymi dwoma programami. Wynik ten został otrzymany przy użyciu obu zastosowanych testów, które tym samym okazały się komplementarne; użyte po raz pierwszy w Kenii potwierdziły również swoją wiarygodność transkulturową.
We investigated the perception of meaning/purpose in life in relation to transition and access to Kenyan universities in a sample of 1173 first year students, in the three modes of access namely: Joint Admission Board students (JAB), Self-Sponsored Programs students (SSP) and the Private University students (PU). The Purpose-in-Life Test (PIL) and The Seeking of Noetic Goals Test (SONG) were used to measure Viktor Frankl’s concept of Will to Meaning and existential vacuum in which four interpretable dimensions of satisfaction with life were extracted with 2 factors loading on the PIL and two on the SONG with the Kenyan sample. The JABs attained a higher score than SSPs and PUs and inversely a lower score in SONG than the other two. This result supports assertion that SONG is a complementary scale to PIL contributing two factors that deal with purpose in life and two motivations for meaning in life. The two instruments proved their cross-cultural reliability and validity with the Kenyan sample.

Wstęp i cele: Przegląd prac doktorskich został przeprowadzony by utworzyć zbiór dysertacji na temat chorób rzadkich oraz określić ich tematykę i metodykę badań. Materiały i metody: Wybór i charakterystykę prac przeprowadzono w oparciu o źródła drukowane przedstawiające listy wszystkich prac doktorskich obronionych w Uniwersytecie Kopenhaskim w latach 1977-1990, czasopismo „Københavns Universitets Årbog” i właściwe teksty dysertacji. Wyniki: Choroby rzadkie stanowiły ważne pole tematyczne dysertacji w zakresie medycyny w Uniwersytecie Kopenhaskim w latach 1980-1985. Spośród 233 dysertacji w 38 opisano badania chorób rzadkich jako pojedynczych chorób lub grup chorób. Ponadto prowadzono wiele innych prac naukowych związanych z chorobami o niskiej częstości występowania. Wnioski: Prace młodych naukowców z zakresu patogenezy, diagnostyki, leczenia, epidemiologii i historii odgrywają istotną rolę w poznawaniu problematyki chorób rzadkich. Niniejsze badanie przedstawia zakres tematyczny dysertacji i wskazuje na złożoność badanych problemów oraz różnorodność rodzajów badań i metod naukowych. Opisane rozprawy były i nadal są przydatne do dalszych badań.
Introduction and aim: A review of doctoral dissertations was conducted to create a collection of dissertations on the topic of rare diseases and to define their topics and research methodology. Material and methods: The selection and characteristics of the papers were based on printed sources presenting lists of all PhD theses defended at the University of Copenhagen in the years 1977-1990, the journal ‘Københavns Universitets Årbog’ and texts of the proper dissertations. Results: Rare diseases were an important subject of dissertations in medicine at the University of Copenhagen over the period of 1980-1985. 38 of 233 theses in the field of medicine from this period were performed on rare diseases studied as individual illnesses or groups of diseases. In addition, many other scientific studies related to low-incidence diseases were carried out. Conclusion: The works of young scientists in the field of pathogenesis, diagnostics, treatment, epidemiology and history play an important role in learning the issues of rare diseases. This review presents the thematic scope and indicates the complexity of the examined problems and the diversity of the types of the research and the scientific methods. These dissertations were and still are useful for further research.

Opis:
Głównym celem artykułu jest opisanie i analiza aktywności nauczycieli akademickich względem środowiska przyrodniczego. Pierwsza część artykułu prezentuje założenia teorii ugruntowanej B. Glasera i A. Straussa, na podstawie której dokonana została analiza danych, zebranych podczas badań w 2017 r. W drugiej części przedstawione zostały wykorzystane metody jakościowe w postaci technik: ankiety eksperckiej oraz dodatkowo wywiadu swobodnego. Badaniu poddano 24 wykładowców nauk przyrodniczych i 24 nauczycieli nauk humanistycznych z Polski, Słowacji, Czech i Ukrainy. W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy jakościowej stwierdzono, że ukraińscy wykładowcy wykazywali większą aktywność prośrodowiskową, niż wykładowcy z krajów unijnych. Ponadto respondenci, którzy przyznawali się do podejmowania częstych i różnorodnych działań względem środowiska, czyli głównie Ukraińcy i Słowacy, mieli też większe oczekiwania co do instytucjonalnego motywowania pracowników uczelni do podejmowania działań przyjaznych przyrodzie.
The main objective of the submitted paper is the presentation and analysis of proenvironmental behavior and activities of academic staff. Part one outlines the assumptions of B.Glaser’s and A. Strauss’s ground theory which was the tool to analyze the data collected during the study conducted in 2017. Part two presents the qualitative research techniques applied in the study, i.e. expert survey and open guideline interview The study included 24 lecturers of natural sciences and 24 representatives of the Humanities in Poland, Slowakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraina. The analyzis-results of the qualitative research give evidence that teaching staff from Slowakia show a greater commitment to pro-environmental activities than do their peers from European Union countries. Furthermore respondents who declared frequent and various activities on behalf of the nartural environment- hailing mainly from Ukraina and Slowakia- have higher standards concerning a formal institutionalized motivation of academic staff on behalf of nature protection and pro-ecological activities.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie jednego z systemów badania karier osób, które ukończyły naukę na uczelniach wyższych. Autorka stara się przybliżyć polskiemu czytelnikowi działalność istniejącego od kilkunastu lat we Włoszech konsorcjum międzyuczelnianego AlmaLaurea oraz, na wybranych przykładach, pokazać, jakie korzyści może przynieść monitoring losów absolwentów.
The purpose of this article is to explain one of the systems of monitoring the careers of people who finished their university studies. The author tries to bring closer to the Polish reader the activities of the existing in Italy sińce several years inter-university consortium, AlmaLaurea and to show on selected examples, what advantages can monitoring the fortunes of graduates bring about.
