The aim of the presented work was to examine the reliability assessment model on the example of a selected power grid object. The analyzed object was tested based on assumptions about technological breaks that were caused by overvoltage, among others. The study was conducted to check the reliability of integral elements of the power grid object and to assess the change in reliability level as a function of the frequency of inspections. The test results are to determine the optimal frequency of inspections of individual power grid objects in order to increase its reliability. In addition, the possibility of correlating optimal inspection periods resulting from the findings of this paper with periodic inspections of power network facilities was assessed.

This paper deals with the performance assessment of a textile industry, namely African Textile Manufactures (ATM) Ltd., in Chalawa, Kano industrial estate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The entire system ATM has different sections of machines for processing various assignments. The machines in the sections have diverse capabilities. We assumed the following subsystems: spinning, weaving, pretreatment, printing, and steaming. The failure rates of subsystems are constant, and they follow exponential distribution, while the repairs follow two types of distributions, namely general distribution and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. The system analyzed by employing supplementary variable and the Laplace transform. Various measures of reliability have been computed for differential values of failures and two types of repair. The conclusions and some recommendations are addressed to improving the management of ATM.

Despite many advances in the field of computational reliability analysis, the efficient estimation of the reliability and reliability sensitivity analysis of structural systems with multiple failure modes remains a persistent challenge. The key to deal with the problem lies in the correlation modelling between failure modes. In this paper, the Archimedean copulas are used as an alternative to solve the high-dimensional dependence modeling problem. The probability characteristics of failure modes are described by stochastic perturbation technique, and the reliability index is estimated with the fourth-moment standardization method. Considering that the number of the potential failure modes of the structural systems are relatively large, the probabilistic network evaluation technique is adopted to reduce the computational complexity. The sensitivity analysis is then conducted using the matrix differential technology. The numerical examples show that the applied procedure is able to efficiently consider various failure modes of structural systems in probabilistic assessment and sensitivity analysis.
Mimo poważnych osiągnięć w dziedzinie komputerowej analizy niezawodności, skutecznaocena niezawodności i analiza czułości niezawodnościowej systemów konstrukcyjnych o wielu przyczynach uszkodzeń pozostają ciągłym wyzwaniem. Kluczem do rozwiązania problemu jest modelowanie korelacji między przyczynami uszkodzeń. W niniejszym artykule zastosowano kopuły Archimedesa jako alternatywny sposób rozwiązania problemu modelowania zależności wysoko wymiarowych. Charakterystyki prawdopodobieństwa dla przyczyn uszkodzeń opisano przy pomocy metody zaburzeń stochastycznych, zaś wskaźnik niezawodności oszacowano metodą standaryzacji momentu czwartego rzędu. Biorąc pod uwagę, że liczba potencjalnych przyczyn uszkodzeń systemów konstrukcyjnych jest stosunkowo duża, wykorzystano technikę oceny z zastosowaniem sieci probabilistycznych, która pozwala na zmniejszenie złożoności obliczeniowej. Następnie przeprowadzono analizę czułości przy użyciu metody macierzy równań różniczkowych. Przykłady liczbowe pokazują, że zastosowana procedura pozwala na skuteczną ocenę różnych przyczyn uszkodzeń systemów konstrukcyjnych w ramach oceny probabilistycznej oraz analizy czułości.

As the importance of reflective teaching is increasingly acknowledged, the need for its assessment is seen more essential. This study designed and validated a scale measuring reflective teaching in an EFL context. In doing so, a test comprising of 24 scenarios in a multiple-choice format was developed and administered to 120 Iranian EFL teacher participants. The scale’s reliability was obtained to be 0.75 using Cronbach’s alpha. In order to determine the construct validity of the tentative test, it was subjected to a series of factor analysis. The findings showed that the newly designed test could be used to measure reflective teaching. Some implications were suggested in the context of language teaching.

A high number of examples in today’s global industry prove that it is difficult to ensure a certain level of quality. One possible reason is the increasing complexity of modern mechatronic product systems. Interface problems due to several involved science disciplines and the lack of understanding subsystems, which are delivered by different suppliers, make it difficult to identify critical components and specifications of elements. Furthermore, it is even harder to estimate the effects of elements because of their unknown dependencies and relations. Therefore it becomes more and more improbable to develop a safe, sustainable and high quality product right from the beginning. In order to understand failures in complex system structures today’s engineering industries need a generic approach that increases the understanding of systems, identifies critical components and considers the different levels of a system. It shall examine failures that cause system errors but also failures that limit system functions. Thus, it is necessary to model and simulate the causally failure chains and analyse over several system levels and elements with their dependencies. This leads to a better understanding of the whole picture of cause and effect. This research paper points out which requirements this new model-based approach has to fulfill and how it is possible to link quality and reliability methods to achieve an overall understanding and analysis of a complex system to assure high quality and sustainability.

The introduction to the Fault Tree Analysis has been presented in this article. Selected publications on the Fault Tree Analysis have been listed. The usefulness of the method in marine engineering application has been indicated. Reliability testing facility has been presented, that is typical two-stroke, slow-speed ship crosshead Diesel engine intended to power the ship. The way of creating system model with the Fault Tree Analysis application has been presented. Reliability structure of tested engine has been modelled using Reliability Block Diagrams, as well as the Fault Tree Analysis. Main tree describing the object reliability structure analysis and the sub-tree structure modelling crank system, subsystem of the cam shaft, cylinder exemplary system and turbocharger have been built. Qualitative analysis of the tree has been conducted – the minimal cut sets of the system has been determined. The directions for further research have been indicated.

The article aims to present practical methods for prioritising the activities of maintenance departments based on the Pareto analysis and the failure risk analysis. Based on the collected data on the number of observed failures and their removal times, commonly known reliability indicators were determined, which were then used to estimate the probabilities and consequences of failures in terms of the risk of loss of production continuity. Based on commonly collected failure data, the developed methods allow proposing to the maintenance departments the sequence of maintenance and repair work to be undertaken in terms of minimising the risk of failure. Risk analysis is somewhat commonly used in the practice of maintenance departments (e.g. RBI, FMEA, ETA, FTE, HIRA). The added value of this work is the use of reliability indicators for estimating the values of risk components, i.e., probability and consequences. The method was developed on the basis of operational data collected in one of the plants of the dairy cooperative and, after assessing the effects of its implementation, it was implemented in other enterprises of the cooperative.

The aim of this research is to adapt the Workplace Bullying Scale (Tınaz, Gök & Karatuna, 2013) to Albanian language and to examine its psychometric properties. The research was conducted on 386 person from different sectors of Albania. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that Albanian scale yielded 2 factors different from original form because of cultural differences. Internal consistency coefficients are,890 -,801 and split-half test reliability coefficients, 864 -,808. Comfirmatory Factor Analysis results change from,40 to,73. Corrected item-total correlations ranged,339 to,672 and according to t-test results differences between each item’s means of upper 27% and lower 27% points were significant. Thus Workplace Bullying Scale can be use as a valid and reliable instrument in social sciences in Albania.

The analysis of field lifetime data is much more complicated than the analysis of the results of reliability laboratory tests. In the paper we present an overview of the most important problems of the statistical analysis of field lifetime data, and present their solutions known from literature. When the input information is partial or imprecise, we propose to use interval arithmetics for the calculation of bounds on reliability characteristics of interest. When this information can be described in a more informative fuzzy form, we can generalize our interval-valued results to their fuzzy equivalents.

This paper presents a method of adjusting and designing the maintenance scheme for the high-pressure fuel pumps of a slow-speed two-stroke marine engine, MAN 6S70MC-C. The maintenance database for the marine fuel system was obtained from the planned maintenance software, and covered a period of 11 years. During this period, 29 failures occurred that required corrective actions. Our methodology includes failure mode analysis, risk analysis, reliability calculation and maintenance interval adjustment. Each failure is described using a failure mode analysis, based on a combination of the mode and cause of failure. The objective of this study is to recommend a new preventive maintenance interval based on the exponential reliability results and the analysed maintenance data. The initial maintenance plan for each fuel pump was set to 8,000 running hours, whereas in the modified plan, it is recommended to set this to 4,000 hours. Our results show an increase in the system reliability from 60% to 95% when the new modified maintenance plan is applied. In addition, the results and the recommended initial maintenance schedule are validated based on three similar types of engine with the same fuel pump system. The new maintenance approach can reduce the risk of component failure, which will lead to increased reliability of the fuel pump system and the optimisation of maintenance costs.

The engine output characteristic offers very important information during the real application of the HCCI technology. This kind of combustion process significantly influences the wearing degree of the main engine components or even the engine damage. The principle of the HCCI combustion is basically beneficial, however, it can also be destructive. Described in this article are measurements of the engine output characteristics in the case of an experimental piston combustion engine. These measurements were performed by means of a data recording system, whereby the detonation combustion was evaluated using a quantitative method. The real values of atmospheric conditions and fuel mixture composition were added to the measured values. The resulting values were visually compared with a degree of the engine piston damage caused by the detonations. The final result is a limit value, which represents a maximal number of the detonation units that are permissible in order to ensure reliable operation of the HCCI engine.

Analyzing the systems in terms of reliability, we often treat them as the technical objects only, omitting human interaction or assuming that operator has constant characteristics. This significantly distorts the results obtained in this way, since human is a part of the system with special properties that can change together with the predisposition of the operator and the conditions under which he operates. These attributes may have a major influence on the reliability of the systems. Therefore, analysis of systems reliability should include a reliability of operator and its properties. In this paper presented the antropotechnical reliability structure based on selected installation, which is a part of ships propulsion system. Also operator’s functions were defined and the analysis of human reliability, taking into account various properties of the operator and the external conditions, were performed. Then, there is assessed the influence of operator and environmental factors on the value of the entire system reliability. The study used the reliability data of the container ship propulsion system equipped with low-speed piston engine, fixed pitch propeller and auxiliary installations. These data were obtained from studies of expert judgments (Brandowski A., Frąckowiak W. et al.) in the years 2007–2009. For HRA (human reliability analysis), HEART technique (Human Error Assessment and Reduction Technique) was used, together with the human unreliability values and correction factors developed by the authors of this method. Study results illustrate influence of environmental, ergonomic factors and the properties of the operator on the reliability of the antropotechnical systems. The studies were subjected exemplification on fuel treatment installation as a part of ships propulsion systems.

The analysis of the field of application of gripper is carried out. Are allocated perspective areas of development of a robotics. The main difficulties in the application of kinematic schemes for gripping devices with rotary finger movement are described. The prospective application of the kinematic scheme of the gripper with a straight-parallel plane-parallel motion of the fingers is proved when manipulating an object of the "shaft" type. A new scheme of a gripper with a rectilinear plane-parallel finger movement is presented. Its design is simpler and cheaper than known devices of this type. The capability of the gripper design in the engineering analysis environment has been fulfilled. Numerous computer studies of both individual design elements and pairs of objects that are in interaction have confirmed the operability of the developed design. It is established that the frictional force in the mobile components of the gripper design is insignificant, which will not create the prerequisites for a significant increase in size.

New systems are produced and developed to meet specific needs, and their reliability is the most important issue. In the maritime industry, evaluating failures in a ship’s propulsion system results in high costs and the loss of prestige for the company. Land/sea fleet employees need to detect and minimize the failures that may occur in ship propulsion systems in advance to ensure the continuity of the ships’ operations. In this study, the recorded failure data of four different ships belonging to a fleet in the last 10 years are used. Failures were examined as a whole since the ships have similar propulsion systems. The obtained failure data were grouped, and the average time to fix the failures was determined by the chief engineer and made suitable for reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis. A suitable model was created for grouped failures by Isograph’s RWB software. As a result of the analysis of the propulsion system and its subsystems, the main engine of the ship was shown to have the best reliability. Furthermore, the most important components were the cylinders of the main engine as subsystems. This study highlights the components that are important to the reliability of a propulsion system. Thanks to the RAM analysis, improvements can be pinpointed on a ship’s propulsion system, which will increase the operations of the maritime industry. Reducing failures will further increase the confidence in maritime transport and strengthen its place among the modes of transportation. This study provides a valuable resource for academicians, experts, as well as companies working on reliability, availability, and maintainability in the future.
