Opis:: This paper presents an algorithm to solve the problem of maintenance management of a two state parallel-series system based on preventive maintenance over the different system components. It is assumed that all components of the system exhibit Weibull hazard function and constant repair rate and that preventive maintenance would bring the system to the as good as new condition. The algorithm calculates the interval of time between preventive maintenance tasks for each component, minimizing the costs, and in such a way that the total downtime, in a certain period of time, does not exceed a predetermined value. It is presented an industrial case study where the algorithm is applied.

Opis:: The article presents the selected elements affecting reliability and security of the telecommunications networks, which support transport services. In terms of telecommunications security, the selected methods and mechanisms, which allow providing the required level of reliability and availability of the telecommunications networks, in the fault-free operation and emergency modes, were discussed. In the article, attention was paid to the impact of a way of operation and maintenance on security of the telecommunications networks, and also on a correlation between the telecommunications system security and the security culture within the administrative and decision-making bodies. The telecommunications networks used in transport ensure the broadly understood safe provision of data transmission services. Telecommunications networks consist of hardware and software systems, and the data transmission security depends both on hardware and software. It is a set of methods and mechanisms, which provides a high level of the system’s reliability and availability by selecting the appropriate system structure.

Opis:: The acceleration of the interconnectivity of networks of all sorts brings to the front scene the issue of networks performance measure. Recently, one observed an accelerating course towards quantitative probabilistic models to describe and assess networks’ Connectivity, as being the main vector of performance. However, modelling realistic networks is still far from being satisfactorily achieved using quantitative probabilistic models. On the other hand, little room had been lift to exploring the potential of topological models to develop qualitative and semi- quantitative models in order to assess networks connectivity. In this paper, we are exploring the potential of the topological modelling. The proposed model is based on describing the nodepair connectivity using binary scalars of different orders (tensors). Preliminary results of our explorations sounded very promoting.

Opis:: It can be assumed that at least some of the systems associated with the train traffic operation work in the “mission” mode, i.e. their availability and operational dependability are related to safe “move” of a train through the strictly defined section of the railway line, i.e. systems (devices) must operate reliably during “mission”. In the remaining time, operation of devices does not affect the safe train traffic operation. For example, it is possible to list crossing signalling systems or the GSM-R system, which along with the ETCS 2/3 system, constitutes the ERTMS system. In the article, the GSM-R system operation analysis, in terms of the above-mentioned factors, is presented. In general, it can be assumed that the GSM-R system devices (e.g. BTS base stations) should be efficient within the specific periods, i.e. during the train passing through the relevant section of the railway line. According to the authors’ calculations, it is stated that within longer periods, the selected GSM-R system devices (BTS stations) cannot be fully efficient, i.e. possible failures occurred and removed in these periods will not affect the safe train running.

Opis:: This paper presents a method which makes it possible to determine reliability characteristics of navigational positioning systems, relevant to an assumed value of permissible error in position fixing. The method allows to calculate : availability, reliability as well as operation continuity of position fixing system for an assumed, determined on the basis of formal requirements - both worldwide and national, position-fixing accuracy. The proposed mathematical model allows to satisfy, by any navigational positioning system, not only requirements as to position-fixing accuracy of a given navigational application ( for air, sea or land traffic ) but also the remaining characteristics associated with technical serviceability of a system. Essence of the method in question consists in the working-out of recorded empirical position-fixing data as well as the making use of multi-state Markov processes ( appropriate to a maximum error value permissible for various navigational applications ) as a result of which reliability characteristics based on real data would be determined. About usefulness of a given navigational positioning system for its possible application would decide a vector of variables (both dealing with position and reliability) which satisfies / or does not satisfy/ formal navigational requirements for a given application.

Opis:: A convenient new tool for solving the problem of reliability and availability evaluation and optimization of complex technical systems is presented. Linking a semi-markov modeling of the system operation processes with a multi-state approach to system reliability and availability analysis is proposed to construct the joint general model of reliability and availability of complex technical systems in variable operation conditions. This joint model and a linear programming is proposed to complex technical systems reliability and availability evaluation and optimization respectively.

Opis:: This paper deals with the performance assessment of a textile industry, namely African Textile Manufactures (ATM) Ltd., in Chalawa, Kano industrial estate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The entire system ATM has different sections of machines for processing various assignments. The machines in the sections have diverse capabilities. We assumed the following subsystems: spinning, weaving, pretreatment, printing, and steaming. The failure rates of subsystems are constant, and they follow exponential distribution, while the repairs follow two types of distributions, namely general distribution and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. The system analyzed by employing supplementary variable and the Laplace transform. Various measures of reliability have been computed for differential values of failures and two types of repair. The conclusions and some recommendations are addressed to improving the management of ATM.

Opis:: The paper is concerned with the analysis of under-keel clearance of ships based on real data from Szczecin Maritime Office. Using probabilistic method for UKC assessment give it possibility to create the distribution of under-keel clearance in several ship’s passages and in further step to determine the probability of ship’s grounding accident during the port approach. The results of using this type of model could be used in risk assessment of ships entering to the ports, therefore it is possible to used probabilistic model in Maritime Office employees’ everyday decision making practice. Research results present verification of probabilistic model, based on data from Vessel Traffic Service database and probability of touching the bottom during ships’ passages on Swinoujscie – Szczecin waterway. Moreover there are presented examples of these situations when entering to the port for analysed ships is not allowed according to the model.

Opis:: In the paper the environment and infrastructure influence of the ground ship-rope transporter operating in Naval Shipyard in Gdynia on its operation processes is considered. The results are presented on the basis of a general model of technical systems operation processes related to their environment and infrastructure. The transporter operation process is described and its statistical identification is given. Next, the reliability, risk and availability evaluation of the transporter in variable operation conditions is presented. In addition, the reliability and availability basic characteristics of the system assuming its components’ failure dependence are determined. Finally, the obtained results for the ground ship-rope transporter under the assumption that its components are dependent and independent are compared.

Opis:: Rotary drilling machines are the most common machines used for drilling the blast holes in mining and constructions activities. The vital role of drilling operation in mining activities reveals that, the performance analysis of drilling machines and their failure and repair behaviours are essential. There-fore, the present study focuses on the reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) of drilling ma-chines. In this paper, four rotary drilling machines at Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine in Iran are considered for repair and failure data collection. RAM analysis of drilling machines is done using Markov Approach. Results show that the reliability of drilling fleet is decreased by 0.67% in per hour drilling. The hydraulic system is the main unavailability reason of all machines. Moreover, the most failures of the two newest machines are completely repaired in 25 hours.

Opis:: The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is a relevant challenge for a sustainable development. Waste heat could be used to produce hot water by using a recovery system. This article studies the availability of a combined heat and power systems (CHP) in extreme area (Antarctic) through the integration of a waste heat recovery system with a diesel generator to produce hot water. The reliability and availability principles are incorporated to explore how the profile of hot water consumption and the hot water storage tank size affect system availability. Different combined heat and power systems are thus classified, and their availability indexes modelled by adopting the continuous Markov approach and the state space model. The results indicate that the CHP systems availability is strongly influenced by the daily hot water demand profile. As a useful recommendation, one of the considerations for increasing availability, reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions with the CHP system is to include a hot water tank in the analysis.
