Today, every industry is striving for the highest efficiency and best economic results possible, with the greatest possible competitiveness. But in maritime affairs, human safety and environmental protection are the foundations of sustainability. To achieve this, marine systems must be reliable, high quality and easy to maintain. Because of this, reliability has become an important factor in safety, which remains relevant throughout the lifetimes of ship systems, including fire alarm systems. In this paper we address a number of issues connected with the reliability – and ‘availability’ of these systems. Firstly, ship fire alarm systems consist of various components whose individual reliability affect the system’s overall reliability. Discussions of reliability in ship fire alarm systems normally focus on the length of a system’s useful life or performance during design-based fire events. In addition to the reliability of systems, their availability for use is also crucial given the possibility that the system may need to operate at any point in time.

The availability is one of the most important feature of a technical object which shapes its operational quality. The paper undertakes the issue related to the quantification of functional availability of vehicles, with reference to reliability aspects. The conducted exploitation research paved the way for elaborating methods of determining functional availability for vehicles, in particular focusing on reliability. The essential research was conducted using the developed mathematical model based on the probabilistic, stochastic Markov process, which allowed modelling the process of changes in the exploitation states of vehicles. In view of the above, it is essential to develop methods that enable the most accurate estimation of the functional availability of vehicles. Knowing the values of functional availability, we can estimate the probability of performing assigned tasks and precisely control the vehicle exploitation system, especially in terms of availability, which is important for vehicles. This work presents a method for determining the functional availability of vehicles, taking into account the limitations introduced by the vehicle exploitation system. Particular attention was paid to the possibility of using probabilistic, stochastic semiMarkov models, whose rules and method of creation were generally described, with regard to the ability to acquire operational data in the vehicle exploitation system.

New systems are produced and developed to meet specific needs, and their reliability is the most important issue. In the maritime industry, evaluating failures in a ship’s propulsion system results in high costs and the loss of prestige for the company. Land/sea fleet employees need to detect and minimize the failures that may occur in ship propulsion systems in advance to ensure the continuity of the ships’ operations. In this study, the recorded failure data of four different ships belonging to a fleet in the last 10 years are used. Failures were examined as a whole since the ships have similar propulsion systems. The obtained failure data were grouped, and the average time to fix the failures was determined by the chief engineer and made suitable for reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis. A suitable model was created for grouped failures by Isograph’s RWB software. As a result of the analysis of the propulsion system and its subsystems, the main engine of the ship was shown to have the best reliability. Furthermore, the most important components were the cylinders of the main engine as subsystems. This study highlights the components that are important to the reliability of a propulsion system. Thanks to the RAM analysis, improvements can be pinpointed on a ship’s propulsion system, which will increase the operations of the maritime industry. Reducing failures will further increase the confidence in maritime transport and strengthen its place among the modes of transportation. This study provides a valuable resource for academicians, experts, as well as companies working on reliability, availability, and maintainability in the future.

In the paper the environment and infrastructure influence of the ground ship-rope transporter operating in Naval Shipyard in Gdynia on its operation processes is considered. The results are presented on the basis of a general model of technical systems operation processes related to their environment and infrastructure. The transporter operation process is described and its statistical identification is given. Next, the reliability, risk and availability evaluation of the transporter in variable operation conditions is presented. In addition, the reliability and availability basic characteristics of the system assuming its components’ failure dependence are determined. Finally, the obtained results for the ground ship-rope transporter under the assumption that its components are dependent and independent are compared.

Keeping vehicles technically suitable is strictly dependent on the intensity and nature of the damage. Determining the factors influencing functional availability comes down to investigating the causes of vehicle damage. Studies and analysis of the results have confirmed that functional availability for military vehicles can be estimated, taking into account vehicle intensity and reliability. The intensity of use may be taken into account by appropriate selection of layer tests, classified by intensity of use and by observing changes in functional availability with an increase in the number of trips, reflecting the intensity of use. Studies have found that the intensity of use in the range of average intensity of use of military vehicles does not significantly differentiate the level of availability.

Opis:
A convenient new tool for solving the problem of reliability and availability evaluation and optimization of complex technical systems is presented. Linking a semi-markov modeling of the system operation processes with a multi-state approach to system reliability and availability analysis is proposed to construct the joint general model of reliability and availability of complex technical systems in variable operation conditions. This joint model and a linear programming is proposed to complex technical systems reliability and availability evaluation and optimization respectively.

Quantification of operational availability at any moment, of cars utilized in action operations is the result of the processed information from the monitoring of use and maintenance processes. The collection of information on the monitoring processes and its structure are secondary to the applied preparedness and reliability indicators. This study, based on data from the literature and normative acts, contains the characteristics of the preparedness models used in the military transportation system and the indicators used for controlling its exploitation. The specific issue in this approach is an attempt to indicate how to assess the impact of the vehicle wear on their preparedness, reliability and availability. Not only the need, but also the possibility to account for this impact, was justified by empirical characterization of damageability of the vehicles operated with varying intensity of use. Varying intensity of use of vehicles suitable for a variety of cargo shipments, is a characteristic phenome-non in the system with action specificity like the military transportation system in the status of waiting for the full functioning. The study also attempted to utilize index, defined in the defence standards, for quantification of operational availability of vehicles utilized in the system with action characteristics, and also an attempt to identify their reliability and availability.

In the paper, definitions and theoretical results on system operations process, multi-state system reliability, risk and availability modelling are illustrated by the example of their application to a bulk cargo transportation system operating in Gdynia Port Bulk Cargo Terminal. The bulk cargo transportation system is considered in varying in time operation conditions. The system reliability structure and its components reliability functions are changing in variable operation conditions. The system reliability structures are fixed with a high accuracy. Whereas, the input reliability characteristics of the bulk cargo transportation system components and the system operation process characteristics are not sufficiently exact because of the lack of statistical data. Anyway, the obtained evaluation may be a very useful example in simple and quick systems reliability characteristics evaluation, especially during the design and improving the transportation systems operating in ports.

The article presents the selected elements affecting reliability and security of the telecommunications networks, which support transport services. In terms of telecommunications security, the selected methods and mechanisms, which allow providing the required level of reliability and availability of the telecommunications networks, in the fault-free operation and emergency modes, were discussed. In the article, attention was paid to the impact of a way of operation and maintenance on security of the telecommunications networks, and also on a correlation between the telecommunications system security and the security culture within the administrative and decision-making bodies. The telecommunications networks used in transport ensure the broadly understood safe provision of data transmission services. Telecommunications networks consist of hardware and software systems, and the data transmission security depends both on hardware and software. It is a set of methods and mechanisms, which provides a high level of the system’s reliability and availability by selecting the appropriate system structure.
