    The paper presents selected theories of regional development. The first one is the concept of “top-down” development, according to which the region is understand as an “object” of development: the processes taking place in the region are the consequence of external conditions of development. Subsequently, selected “bottom-up” regional development theories, in which the leading role is attributed to the differentiated activities of the region which is the “subject”, not the “object”, of the development processes, are presented. Finally, the paper points out the references to regional development in the concepts of “new economic geography” and evolutionary economics, which show the complexity of modern regional development processes.

    The article presents disparities in the socio-economic development of the Polish regions (voivodships). The analysis is carried out on the basis of four indicators: gross domestic product per capita, registered unemployment rate, average monthly gross wages and share of revenues in total revenues of local government units. The study confirms that Polish voivodship are characterized by a high degree of inequality in socio-economic development. In the years 2004–2015, regional disparities in Poland became stronger and the position of poorer regions has deteriorated. Two sets of economic divides are visible: gap between eastern and western Poland and the gap between Mazowieckie region and other regions.

    The issues of economic geography research are subject to constant changes, mainly corresponding to the dynamic changes in the socio-economic space, especially in Polish conditions in the period of systemic transformation. This is also reflected in taking new research directions. One of those developed intensively in Poland after 1989 is entrepreneurship and its role in the development of spatial systems. The theme of the article is, therefore, the research problem of the role of entrepreneurship in the development of spatial systems. In the light of the analysis of the literature on the subject, mainly related to geographic research conducted by Polish researchers in this field, the article analyses various views on the concept of entrepreneurship, determines international and national conditions for entrepreneurship development, and proposes a systematic approach to entrepreneurial function in the development of spatial systems of various scales. The links between entrepreneurship and geography, the significant share of geographers in research in this field and the possibilities of using in this research the model of the functioning of geographical space were pointed out. In the final part, further directions of geographic research on this subject were recommended, which may contribute to the systematic increase of the importance of this discipline in the system of sciences and application activities, in particular in the development, implementation and monitoring of development strategies for spatial systems of different scales.

    The article deals with the fundamental theoretical and practical problems of regional development, the causes of poverty and wealth of regions, and factors influencing change of the region's situation. The answers are being sought in the relations between the location criteria stemming from a current paradigm of development and the region's features, the type and character of external factor influencing the region and the region's reaction to these factors. The theoretical considerations are being illustrated by contemporary and historical examples.

    The article considers the Kaliningrad region from the perspective of the development of medical and health tourism in the region. The main objective and problematic of the research is to study the potential of the Kaliningrad region in the development of health tourism and definitione the place of the Kaliningrad region’s health tourism in the Baltic Sea region. In the course of the study, methods of reviewing the literature on topics were applied, the experience of both Russian and foreign researchers was analyzed; For visualization of the results, the cartographic method was used, and the results of the analysis are presented in the form of graphs and tables. The article considers the natural and geographical prerequisites for the development of health tourism in the Baltic region, analyzes the sanatorium-resort base of the Kaliningrad region, shows the dynamics of attendance at sanatorium-resort institutions in the region from 2012 to 2016. The potential of each municipality of the Kaliningrad region in the development of medical and sanatorium-resort tourism is shown. As a result of the study, it was found out that the Kaliningrad region has significant potential for the development of therapeutic, health and medical tourism in the Baltic region: a developed sanatorium-resort network, natural resources (mineral water, therapeutic mud, etc.), an advantageous geographical position, affordable prices for spa treatment). However, it is necessary to expand the range of sanatorium-resort services of the institutions of the Kaliningrad region in order to be able to compete with similar institutions in the Baltic countries and neighboring Poland; improvement of medical infrastructure and level of medical services in the region to expand their range.

    W artykule podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy istnienie i rozwój metropolii przyczynia się do wzrostu poziomu rozwoju regionalnego, czy może obszar metropolitalny rozwija się kosztem regionu, deprecjonując znaczenie i możliwości wzrostowe obszarów peryferyjnych. Celem opracowania jest zbadanie poziomu rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego gmin należących do Szczecińskiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego (SOM) na tle regionu – województwa zachodniopomorskiego. Aby to osiągnąć, zidentyfikowano kluczowe mierniki rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego, na podstawie których przeprowadzono próbę obliczenia przy wykorzystaniu metody unitaryzacji zerowanej poziomu rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego gmin należących do SOM, a następnie porównano go do analogicznych wartości obliczonych dla województwa. Opracowanie jest elementem cyklu publikacji autorki poświęconych wynikom badań obrazujących poziom i determinanty rozwoju Szczecińskiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego.
    The study attempts to answer the question whether the existence and development of a metropolis contributes to the increase in the level of local development or is it developing at its expense depreciating the importance and growth possibilities of peripheral areas. The main aim of this study is to analyze the level of socio-economic development of communes belonging to the Szczecin Metropolitan Area against the background of the region – West Pomeranian Voivodeship. For this purpose were identified key measures of socio-economic development, on the basis of which an attempt was made to calculate the level of socio-economic development of municipalities belonging to Szczecin Metropolitan Area using the zero unitarisation method, and then it was compared to analogous values calculated for the voivodship. The analyzes showed a large variation in the values of individual measures. On their basis, it was found that the Szczecin Metropolitan Area doesn’t increase at the cost of the regional environment.

    This article discusses factors that determine socio-economic development in Poland. The discussion is held in a wide neopluralistic analytical perspective, which can be regarded as an effective tool for conceptualizing further research in this problem area. It seems viable to claim that the polarization and diffusion model in managing the socio-economic development of Polish regions will mostly bring benefits to the largest Polish urban agglomerations - in the wake of the polarization processes involved. A potential successful implementation of that model will depend on the rate and effectiveness of the diffusion processes.

    Purpose: The processes of socio-economic development always take place in a specific space and are not uniform. The modern conditions of regional development vary a lot with regard to the socio-economic development of the particular territorial entities. This is also true for Ukraine, the subject of this study and a current candidate for the European Union. This paper will assess the diversity of socio-economic development of the Ukrainian regions in 2020 and rank these entities according to the level of their development. Methodology: Z. Hellwig’s method of development pattern, which helps to order the regions in terms of their development, is applied to the evaluation of socio-economic development of the Ukrainian entities. The indicators adopted are systematised by the following areas: Demographics and job market, Structure of regional economies, Innovation, research and development activities, Technical infrastructure, Social infrastructure, and Condition and protection of the natural environment. Findings: The analysis helps to identify the levels of socio-economic development of Ukrainian regions and the region groups of the highest, high, low, and very low standards of development. The results suggest a great diversity of socio-economic development of these regions. Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kharkiv experience the maximum, while Donetsk and Luhansk the minimum levels of development. Research limitations/implications: The data published by the State Statistics Service of Ukraine for 2020 are used, excluding those for the temporarily occupied area of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the city of Sevastopol, and parts of the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Further comparative research should estimate the effects of the changes on socio-economic development following the end of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine. Continuing studies may also identify factors with a decisive impact on the regions’ attribution to the particular groupings. Social implications: The evaluation of the regional development levels may provide foundations for some strategies of socio-economic development, an explication of causes of regional variations, and a determination of potential for and ways of levelling down the existing inequalities. The diversity of development of the individual Ukrainian regions is important to its status of a candidate to the EU, granted on 23 June 2022. In connection with a closer cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, the results can provide knowledge about where to channel the EU funding aimed at the socio-economic development of the particular regions. Originality/value: The determination of the diversity of socio-economic development and positioning of the Ukrainian regions in this respect. The study can also be seen as a contribution to the existing research and serve the purpose of comparative analysis.

    The aim of the article is to present tourism as the main factor influencing development of the region of the small department of Vaucluse in the southeast of France. The success of development of this realm is influenced mainly by tourism competitiveness of this region in comparison to other regions, which in this part of France unusually full of attractions (the region of Provence, the Alps, the French Riviera) is a difficult challenge for small communes. However, communes being part of the Vaucluse department such as Orange, Awinion, Gordes, or Vaison-la-Romaine skillfully use their economic potential thanks to recreational, entertainment, or even sport tourism (Malaucene at the foot of Mont Ventoux). Preparing statistical data included in annual summary statements, literature review and author’s individual observations allowed to present modern approach to the use of tourism in economic development of the area. In the analysis of Vaucluse tourism industry capability among others hotel infrastructure, recreational attractiveness and average duration of stay were analysed. The article presents also the most important aspects influencing tourist attractiveness of Vaucluse, as well as indicates main destinations of tourists from Europe but also beyond.
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie turystyki jako głównego czynnika wpływającego na rozwój regionu, jakim jest mały departament Vaucluse w południowej Francji. Na powodzenie rozwoju tej dziedziny wpływa głównie konkurencyjność turystyczna regionu na tle innych, co w tej niezwykle bogatej w atrakcje części Francji (Region Prowansja–Alpy–Lazurowe Wybrzeże) jest trudne do osiągnięcia przez małe miejscowości. Jednakże miasta wchodzące w skład departamentu Vaucluse, takie jak Orange, Awinion, Gordes czy Vaisonla- Romaine, umiejętnie wykorzystują swój potencjał ekonomiczny dzięki turystyce wypoczynkowej, rozrywkowej, a nawet sportowej (Malaucene koło Mont Ventoux). Opracowanie danych statystycznych zawartych w corocznych zestawieniach, kwerenda literatury oraz indywidualne obserwacje autorki umożliwiły przedstawienie nowoczesnego podejścia do wykorzystania turystyki w ekonomicznym rozwoju obszaru. Podczas analizy możliwości przemysłu turystycznego Vaucluse zbadano m.in. bazę hotelową, atrakcyjność wypoczynkową oraz uśredniony czas pobytów. Artykuł przedstawia również najważniejsze aspekty wpływające na atrakcyjność turystyczną Vaucluse wraz ze wskazaniem destynacji turystów z Europy, ale również spoza niej.

    Opis:
    Enterprises from the Warmian-Masurian Voivodship undertake relatively long-term cooperation with scientific-research units – mainly with universities. It is influenced by the high quality of the provided services which are tailored to the needs. Despite the general satisfaction with the cooperation, the entrepreneurs pointed to the barriers that in their opinion hinder cooperation. The barriers are as follows: budget constraints, law regulations or the deficiency of information about the possibility of establishing cooperation. The article presents the results of the study being a part of a project entitled “Cooperation of enterprises in the province Warmia and Mazury with business environment institutions and universities”. The project is financed as part of the Student Grant Rector competition of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
    Przedsiębiorstwa z województwa warmińsko-mazurskiego podejmują relatywnie trwałą współpracę z jednostkami naukowo-badawczymi – głównie uczelniami wyższymi. Wpływ na to ma jakość świadczonych usług oraz dopasowanie oferty do potrzeb. Mimo ogólnego zadowolenia z kooperacji, przedsiębiorcy wskazali na istotne w ich opinii bariery utrudniające współpracę, jak np. ograniczenia budżetowe czy zawiłości prawne. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania będącego fragmentem projektu pn. „Współpraca przedsiębiorstw woj. warmińsko-mazurskiego z instytucjami otoczenia biznesu i uczelniami wyższymi.” Projekt sfinansowany w ramach konkursu Studencki Grant Rektora Uniwersytetu Warmińsko-Mazurskiego w Olsztynie.

    W obecnych realiach społeczno-ekonomicznych obserwujemy gwałtowne różnokierunkowe przemiany, co jest niewątpliwie konsekwencją kształtowania się nowej gospodarki. W tej nowej gospodarce wzrasta rola sektora technologii informacyjnych i komunikacyjnych, a maleje rola przemysłu. W ramach tych przekształceń zaczyna ulegać zmianie także rola regionów społeczno-ekonomicznych. Nowa gospodarka preferuje regiony o nowoczesnych strukturach wielofunkcyjnych, adaptujących się przy tym do zaistniałych przekształceń. Są to regiony, w których kapitał ludzki charakteryzuje się wysoką jakością i kreatywnością. Celem artykułu jest identyfikaca wybranych założeń nowej gospodarki i ich implikacji dla przestrzeni oraz kształtowania się procesów rozwoju regionów. Aby osiągnąć tak postawiony cel, wykorzystano metodę krytycznej analizy przedmiotu, metodę opisową i ujęcie heurystyczne.
    In the current socio-economic realities, we observe rapid, multidirectional changes, which is undoubtedly the effect of the formation of the new economy. In this new economy, the role of the ICT sector is increasing, while the industry’s role is decreasing. As part of the changes, the role of socio-economic regions is also beginning to change. The new economy prefers regions with multifunctional modern structures, which at the same time adapt to the transformations that have taken place. These are regions where human capital is characterized by high quality and creativity. The aim of the article is to identify selected assumptions of the new economy and their implications for space and the shaping of regional development processes. To achieve this goal, the method of critical analysis of the object, the descriptive method and the heuristic approach were used.

    The modern economy is characterized by rapid, multidirectional, even turbulent transformations, where the COVID-19 pandemic has come to the fore, beyond the current causes (shaping the new economy, globalization, financialization, etc.). As part of these changes, the situation of individual regions has begun to change. Regions characterized by an economy with multifunctional modern structures adapt better to the transformations that have occurred and the so-called new normality.
    Współczesna gospodarka cechuje się gwałtownymi, różnokierunkowymi wręcz turbulentnymi przekształceniami, gdzie poza dotychczasowymi przyczynami (kształtowanie się nowej gospodarki, globalizacja, finansyzacja itp.) na plan pierwszy wysunęła się pandemia COVID-19. W ramach tych zmian zaczyna ulegać zmianie sytuacja poszczególnych regionów. Regiony charakteryzujące się gospodarką o wielofunkcyjnych nowoczesnych strukturach adaptują się lepiej do zaistniałych przekształceń i tworzącej się tzw. nowej normalności.
